Sprint Galaxy S5 OTA update OD3 with "Factory Reset Protection" locks bootloader?
Sprint is pushing out an OTA update with build G900PVPU2BOD3 to the Galaxy S5 and the update changelog reads "Factory Reset Protection", does it locks bootloader?

The reports of the locked bootloader on T-Mo S6 Edge were mistaken and premature. So the answer is no.

New update has locked me out of root access

Glad I decided not to take the OTA update, even though I'm sure there will be a fix for the loss of root.
A colleague of mine who updated her GS5 yesterday said her caller ID only shows the phone number and no longer shows the contact's name. Also, I can confirm this isn't the 5.1 update . . .

I was able to root OD3 using the most recent CF autoroot for the S5. It will flash OA6 recovery though. Hopefully it will be updated to include the OD3 recovery, or I'll just wait until the OD3 tar is up on sammobile.com to grab the OD3 recovery from there.

I've accepted the update and have tried to Odin back to OA6. Odin fails. I'm guessing we can't go back.

I did the same thing. Apparently there's no going back from OD3. If you're worried about root, just use the latest CF Auto Root for this phone. It works on OD3. Then just wait for the full ROM to be posted on Sammobile if you want to do flash that later. I'm rooted on OD3 and haven't had any issues at all.

Yeah, it's really no problem. There's no going back, but I just re-rooted with CF Auto Root and restored an OA6 backup and all is well.

So if the recovery is OA6, what happens if you then use that recovery? are you back in OA6 and still rooted? I guess it would be best to wait for the OD3 recovery to show up. In the mean time, still no issues?

That's weird I've never been able to untick a notification. Glad you came abroad to MOAR. Please though we ask you to post your questions in the MOAR Q&A FAQ thread and not the development thread. We as a community are trying to keep the clutter in that thread to a minimal. Heck we even have an Off Topic thread for anything, just so we don't clutter the development thread.

[Q] Rooted and can't install OTA update

Hi.
I rooted my Note 8010 using Zedomax' method. All has been fine. My note has now downaloded the JB OTA update, but it fails to install.
I assume I need to restore 'stock' recovery to install the OTA update? But where can I get this from.
Also will installing the OTA remove root? And will Zedomax' method still work to re-root after applying the update.
Regards
Installing the OTA should not remove root but if it does just use the exynos abuse patch app to root that is the simplest and safest method.
Thanks Samir_a
Do I actually need to restore stock recovery? If so, where can I get that?

Cf root method restores stock recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33298782 and yes to do ota udate you need stock recovery

Thanks hoss_n2
Ok I ran the CF auto root to restore stock recovery.
But now I have downloaded the ota update 3 times, and on clicking install it fails immediately.
Previously it rebooted into CWM recovery.
Any ideas what's wrong now? I'm guessing I can download a full update and flash it another away, but I assume that will erase all settings.
Try to flash via odin or if u r rooted use mobile odin . Im now on jb 4.1.2 i flashed my note via mobile odin in 5 min
Thanks mexman_2010.
However if I use odin that will trash my settings won't it?
Is there no way of getting the ota update to work?
You dont need to retore stock recovery or fiddle with odin. Just use kies on your computer and it installs the update for you. All your data should still be intact after the process but it is recommended to backup first
Keep in mind that updating using kies removes root
The ota's are using the patch method;
effectively what they do is work out the difference between the new binaries and old binaries and just send a patch that changes the old into the new.. this is done to keep the ota as small as possible I presume.
so if the binary isn't identical to what was shipped with the rom its trying to update then it will have to fail, otherwise you'd end up with an almighty great mess of non booting or corrupted devices.
if they used the file method (complete apks etc like an cwm style zip) then it shouldn't matter, but as it is, the only way to ensure a patch will work is to make sure the files are identical to what the patch was generated against, root allows you to change system files, so root is the primary way of checking if the system has been altered.
ergo if you want otas then you're most likely going to have to run them from a stock rom.
Thanks for all the info guys.
Bizarrely though, having left the Note overnight. It downloaded the OTA update itself and this time when I clicked install it worked perfectly, so
all is well again.
Thanks for the help everyone.
Please every one. I need help with my n8000. Currently i am on stock ics rooted with zedomax cwm installed. Is it safe for me to install OTA update or can i just switch back to my stock recovery by flashing it through odin? I have downloaded the stock recovery so im waiting for your replies

Why don't you just install the latest version from sammobile with Odin or Mobile Odin instead of using the complicate way?
Can i revert to stock recovery by flashing through odin and still keep root?

Yes you can do that, install stock recovery using ODIN, you will need to use triangleaway to reset your binary count though.
Also make sure the stock recovery is for your devic

4.3 Upgrade on Friday and root?

So I have a friend whose phone I rooted a while back. He's still on the stock ROM and has no plans to change. What do I have to do to get him the 4.3 upgrade when (or if lol) it comes out without locking his phone up? I'm assuming I'll have to remove root. Anyway to do that without using ODIN?
Thanks!

If he's still on the stock rom, he'll receive an OTA notification on his phone. So long as he hasn't removed any system apps or installed any systemUI mods then it will update just fine even with a custom recovery installed.
He removed a couple of system apps but is on the stock ROM with no UI changes.
he has time to worry about it later. nothing is going to happen on friday.
does he have a nand of the stock system? if so tell him to restore it before updating to be safe
Yeah that's what I thought but better safe than sorry. No NAND of stock as far as I know.
OK there is thread out there just has rooted stock ROMs you can flash in recovery without a data wipe. I can't seem to find the thread for some reason but I have the file. If you wait till tomorrow I can upload it and share it. Or maybe u can find the thread. Or if all he removed was Verizon apps he could try a flashable zip to restore VZW apps.

OK. Because you do NOT want to get that term mixed up and you do not want to flash a flushable zip using odim. Very bad idea. Odin uses tar files which sometimes comes zipped up (not flashable via recovery)

You can install the OTA with s off and root but you still need the stock recovery. You install the stock recovery the same way as you did the custom. You can install the update, and when you have the chance you can s-off using the weaksauce/supersu/firewater method. I picked up a new M8 a couple nights ago and took the update, and afterwards did the temproot/firewater method and it worked just fine. Hope this helps.
I flashed stock recovery and tried the OTA and it failed twice. I can't seem to get it on my phone through any of the methods for some reason.
In order to install update, you need to have STOCK recovery and STOCK Rom....NOT debloated or with mods....STOCK.
Again, you need STOCK recovery using a STOCK Rom.

No need to take ota. Ota us our enemy. Lol. The ota has been pulled an you can simply flash the firmware an that's half of the ota an then flash a stock Rom based off 1.55 or install the backup that was posted of a pure stock 1.55 Rom. After those 2 things you will have the full ota. New radios everything.. flashing a stock recovery taking ota flashing back is not needed.

As for getting updates after roming the phone usually just wait for authors to incorporate the updates. To expound on that a bit more, OP - this is assuming you have S-OFF/Unlocked BL so then you are able to re-flash the recovery, and, thus, re-root by flashing Superuser.
At least, that's what I'm thinking is necessary. If not then someone can correct me if needed.... =x

ODIN not delivering recovery

I bought a new S5 after totaling my old one, and I am trying to get it rooted. I flash the latest recoveries from TWRP and PHILZ, odin says reset and pass, but it doesn't register on my phone. My knox is still 0x0. I just updated to NE5 so I think that may be the problem. Any solutions?

If you are already rooted you can try an app called flashify, it's in the play store. It works pretty good for flashing recoveries.
I'm not rooted, I plan on flashing the recovery so I can install a ROM. Are there any reasons why ODIN would say pass but not give me recovery? I tried 2 computers so I have a feeling it's the phone.

I would use "Towel Root" to root your new S5 if you haven't rooted yet. Heres the link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2783157 if you use this method it wont trip knox thus leaving knox counter at 0x0, and as far as recovery goes with NE5, use "Flashify" best app ever, root, download that app backup stock recovery with it then flash PHILZ recovery, then make back up of PHILZ recovery with Flashify. Reason I suggest using PHILZ is because it has been an on going problem with NE5 using TWRP to restore a NANDROID. These threads always help for other reasons too http://forum.xda-developers.com/spr...mctr=(not provided)&__utmv=-&__utmk=231498652 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2742994
Has the same recovery worked on other s5 IF has then try other recovery.
