I have the ATT HOX and want to disable LTE due to the known issues with missed calls etc. Would it be possible to disable it through root access WITHOUT installing a custom ROM?
I'm not sure what AT&T do to their phones but can you not change it via Settings > Mobile Network > Network mode.

Same on Telstra
Phone: HTC One XL
ROM: AOKP 4.2.1 MR1 preview w/ alloy blue theme
Launcher: Apex w/glaskart icons
Att one x doesn't have that function. Try to do it in service menu trying typing in *#*#4636#*#*
Go to phone info and scroll down. It works for me on clean Rom but not sure about stock rom

What known missed calls issue? What would LTE have to do with missed calls? LTE on AT&T is data only. It doesn't do anything with calls. You can dial *#*#4636#*#* and try to set it to gsm only or something.

Believe me I have tried. It's not possible. But ik you said you didn't want to, but you really should look into custom ROMs. There's some that are basically stock with just better battery
Except for ATT. Its a well documented fact that they have it disabled. Any changes you make revert back to default.

Its a fairly well known issue with ATT and LTE phones.
As far as I can tell since LTE IS data only it has a hard time receiving calls when its connected to the LTE network. I think it has something to do with only having 1 antenna and it cant communicate on voice and data at the same time. Or, maybe not.:silly: All I know is that when my phone is connected to LTE I will not receive phone calls. All calls will ring a few times and then go to voice mail. I eventually get voice message notifications when the phone switches out of LTE.
Any changes made in the field test mode do not stick. Thank you very much ATT.

I've had 3 different LTE phones on AT&T and never had issues with missed calls and I'm constantly on a LTE connection. My phone kicks to hspa+ right before I receive a call and then it rings. Goes back to LTE about 30 seconds after I hang up. The only thing I can think of is that you are on LTE only in the field test mode thing. That will definitely give you call problems. What does it say that you are connected to when you go into the phone information menu?

I've had a few LTE phones too but I can confirm that this is an issue with AT&T and the HOX. (At least in certain areas.) The phone is *supposed* to do what you said and switch off LTE when a call comes in but that doesn't always happen. I've noticed it the most at my office where I usually have 4 bars of "4G LTE" or one or two bars of "4G". I'll have a long period of time with no incoming calls or texts and then when I make a call (and the phone switches to "4G") I get the backlog of voicemails and text messages. Hard resets haven't helped and AT&T refuses to admit that it's a problem.
Heres a summary of what I have found:
1 Being in field test mode does not affect incoming calls.
2. When making outgoing phone calls with LTE or HSPA displayed in field test mode, the connection will switch to UMTS and then revert back to LTE or HSPA after hanging up. I dont know what that means, just throwing it out there.
3. On a few occasions during my testing I have noticed that I could not receive calls when HSPA is displayed in field test mode. I think that the phone had just switched from LTE, although I havent been able to 100% verify that.
4. My connection at my house varies between LTE, HSPA,EDGE.
5. EDGE is great. My phone makes and receives calls all day long when I have a EDGE connection.
6. Most of my testing has been at home where I have crappy reception to begin with. On a few occasions when I had my wife with me I had her call my phone(connected to LTE). Same as when at home, my pone never rings.

Exactly!
I have Samsung Galaxy S3 on AT&T and I have same issue when connected to LTE. I have been working with AT&T CSR for over a week and no resolution yet. I have talked them into switching my data plan from 300MB LTE to Unlimited Standard Phone data plan. (Unlimited standard phone data plan uses HSPA+ and not LTE, which would resolve the issue)
From what I have understood so far, its not the phone, its the AT&T LTE network.
Wouldnt people with the same phone have more answers for you?

No, because this issue is not related to the phone but its related to AT&T LTE network. So everyone on AT&T LTE network has same issue and not only people with HTC one X.

I was on phone with them last night. They have created a case number for me so their "technical team" can look into it. They promised me to get back to me before friday on this.
For changing the data plan, the CSR tried to change it but it didnt work yesterday. I blame it on the CSR because I know some people on XDA has done that before. I am gonna call them again and have a different CSR try it or me.
And plus, with this change, you get unlimited HSPA+ for just $10.

Thanks for the link. Those settings actually worked for me. I had already tried a couple different APN configs but none of them seemed to stick.
So, now I have successfully disabled LTE.
Unfortunately, I'm still having intermittent missed calls with the phone connected to HSPA. Also, At work in certain areas, we have rock solid LTE reception and guess what...no missed calls. WTFrack?
At home the only time I can get regular calls is when the phone is connected to EDGE.
I seriously think that there must some relationship between 4G/LTE and signal strength. Does anyone know If EDGE and 4G/LTE use the same towers or same power outputs?
Just this morning I noticed I cannot get 4G LTE in a known 4G LTE area where I work.
I've tried toggling Airplane Mode.
I went into Mobile Networks and made sure CDMA/LTE/EVDO was checked
I went into access points and made sure LTE was checked
When I reboot my phone, the access point changes back to EHRPD.
Anyone know of anything else I can try? Looks like it might be a SIM card issue to me. Will I have to go back to stock in order to get a SIM replacement?
Are calls and texts working fine? IMEI the right numbers? If so, I'd give Verizon a call later today to see if its a tower issue. Sounds more like an outage than anything else. If you're stock rooted I'm sure you'd be fine getting a SIM replacement with no problems from Verizon. I haven't gone for one yet so others could provide input there.

Texting and calls are working as expected.
And just like that, 4G is back.
Probably a tower issue, that they have since taken care of...
So I got my nexus 5 on Friday and its perfect none of the mentioned defects was having some small issues with the notification light but that's all. However I noticed once a day since getting it I go to use my phone and it says emergency only / Rogers and I won't be able to make calls or receive calls. Anyone else experiencing this problem ?

I'm on Bell and for some reason sometimes I'd have no signal out of no where then it'll jump back to full bars the next second... Really annoying unless this is a normal thing for the Nexus 5

I'm on Rogers and I get this too. I usually fix it by going into network mode and change it to 3G and back to LTE immediately.
I still get incoming calls even though I can't dial out until I do the above change.
Its network problem not the nexus 5

I have the similar problem i'm on rogers and if the signal gets weak it will show signal strength in the home screen, i can surf the internet(data), but will not send text messages or make calls, if I try to make a call it say "cellular network not available", if i turn air plane mode on then off it reconnects right away. this has never happened with my GE Galaxy S4

I have the exact same issue guys, I hope that it has nothing to do with our nexus 5's.
im getting this error too. darn! its not normal for a phone to be like that. never happened to my previous one.
there must be something wrong with the phone.
im on Fido.
but its only happening to canadian network? weird.
maybe they're torturing people who didnt buy from them? lol
It looks like I have a similar issue.
My connection sometimes gets lost. Some sort of hiccup when connected to mobile network.
No issues found on WIFI
I'm on a hspa network in Canada and wanted to report that I get worse reception with the N5 than I did with my Galaxy S2. I hope it is easy fixable with a new modem flash or other update.
Just wanted to contribute in case there is anyone working on this and wanted some more info.
I had to change my data plan because, according to T-Mobile (US) it was not compatible with the phone. I could get emails and SMS text messages but could not get Internet data services (kept being prompted to log onto the network and presented with the T-Mobile logon screen). Lost my unlimited data, which I was grandfathered into (but found out that they were throttling me at 5 GB which I don't usually hit). I knew they would eventually make me change my plan anyway and was able to get a new 4.5 GB plan at the same price. Since T-Mobile will be offering this phone very soon (tomorrow? they're taking pre-orders now), I guess a lot of long-time customers will be pushed off their unlimited data plan.
I have the same problem!! It's really annoying - mine gets dropped every 2-5 mins! Is there a way to fix it? Is it the N5 or Rogers network?
I have the same problem in Belgium:

If you are constantly getting poor signal it might be the handset. If you have good signal, and can use data, but have "Emergency calls only" instead of a carrier name, it's probably a carrier issue.
I am on Fido and have randomly had the same problem. There's another thread somewhere, and most if not all people reporting the problem are Rogers/Fido customers.

good point though... i don't see anyone from other canadian carriers complaining.
I also have this problem. I am on Fido in BC. Sometimes it will completely cut off the network signal from full bars to no service, similar to no sim card installed. It goes back to normal in about 5-6 seconds by itself but its definitely annoying.

It is a software issue. I switched to a different ROM and kernel.
Cataclysm ROM and bricked Kernel.
So far, the connection is solid with this combo.
I am in an area where there is the eCFSB gap problem. For those not aware this is basically where my area has lte but triband devices can't get it. So yesterday I was surprised that I was finally connected to lte. I thought it was finally fixed. Now my problem is I can connect to lte but I can't make phone calls. What happens is I'll try and make a call the lte will disappear like it's supposed to and it will say call sent. Then it will immediately say call failed and lte will reappear. If I turn lte off and back to 3g then phone calls work. I can receive calls just fine on lte I just can't make them. Anyone else with this problem? Thanks.

Could you provide more detail? Service provider, kernel, Rom, if your SIM card is an LTE one or from an older phone that didn't support lte.

I have the same issue, but only in some areas. I do not get any incoming calls when I am in LTE area, if I change it 3G i get the calls.
You are not alone. I'm on MetroPCS gsm which is basicly T-Mobile. Anyways, I forced my phone to stay on LTE only and I was not able to make or receive any calls whatsoever. Make sure your phone is on automatic mode and not force LTE on becuase that was the only way i was able to get the issue to occur was through force lte on. There's a few threads regarding this issue that might be a good read especially for sprint.

I would check which APN your phone goes to on the phone, Settings -> More Networks -> Mobile Networks -> click either Access Pint Names (to check which APN selected) or click Network Type (make sure automatic or CDMA/LTE, not just 3G).
Its set to CMDA/LTE and the APN is APN2 LTE (n.ispsn) internet. There are no other APNs.

Ok after some troubleshooting, it has nothing to do with the PRL. I can put the phone in and out of airplane mode and it will aquire LTE. Is this happening to anyone else or should I take my phone back for repair?

There's no way to repair it. I've had this issue since I bought the S5 at launch. This is just how it is until the towers are completely upgraded. Calling Sprint gets you no where most of the time about this issue. They will say the phone is defective but you can find many many ppl having this issue.

I had to pay $1.99 for full access, but there is an option to only cycle when on 3g. It does it all in the background, and doesn't really drain the battery. My only complaint is that it stays active and cycling while on wi-fi in a non LTE area. I've only had that in one place in KC, but no wireless service works at that location.
On 4G LTE, PRL's update automatically each time they connect to a tower. I think only 3G and earlier did you have to manually update PRL's. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that's right. So technically, just cycling through airplane mode would update your PRL
my S5 won't receive calls or text
My S5 won't receive calls or texts. I spent hours with Sprint on the line, they were sending updates, having me manually program it and nothing. They would call my cell and straight to VM. They would send text, and i wouldnt get them.
I'm having to send it back, I'm not sure I will get another S5. I'm thinking a phone should be able to receive/make actual calls.

You are probably in an area that is in the partial stages of a Spark Upgrade. If you disable LTE bands 41 and 26 but leave LTE band 25 enabled, you will have stable data.
