On my Galaxy Tab S 16GB, when I go to Settings > Storage, the first line I see is about 4.12GB worth of System application stuff that won't shrink no matter how much bloatware I remove (the device is rooted).
This line does not appear at all on my Nexus 5, so I'm 100% sure this is bloatware.
So, 25% of my internal storage on the Tab S is unusable due to Samsung's bloatware crap.
I'd like to know how much space the bloatware would take up on a S6 of the 32GB variety, as it tends to change across devices.
On mine, Storage reports just over 6 Gig of system memory usage. But that will be the OS and some other shizzle too, I'm guessing?

6GB and no external storage? Ouch!!! No way I'm blowing my money on that just yet. Let's hope custom ROM makers pick this up.

Definitely need to be a bit more frugal than I'm used to with my old S3, where I had 16GB internal and 32GB external. But for me, music is my main killer, as I like higher quality encodings. Luckily though, I have a 10GB data allowance, and only listen to the same set of songs. Depends what you wanna do really.
I'm sure once custom stuff properly starts to roll, we'll have a better understanding of what's inside, and better use for it.

How much free space is in the phone for apps?
/data is 1.5GB(ish)
Yeah, this is great coming from the Nexus One. I had to move all my apps that could to the SD card and still only had 30 MB free (and had to delete the app cache frequently to keep even that much available). I've installed all my apps on the G2x now, none to SD, and still have 1.2 GB left!

How does the display compare to the N1?
The G2x display is substantially brighter -- no problem seeing it outdoors -- and crisper. I'm not a display connoisseur, and the N1 display was fine with me, but the G2x is definitely a noticeble (and appreciated) step up.
Coming from a Nexus One user, this is probably the best phone out, it has EVERYTHING.
Most other phones has there pros and cons like the Nexus S has both camera sides but no SD card and the myTouch 4G has low internal memory but this phone has EVERYTHING and is BETTER than the others
I also came from a Nexus One and I've been impressed, but I was talked into putting a screen protector on and I know this is dulling the display.
I second the relief of having the relatively large amount of space available for apps. I'd moved everything possible to the SD on my Nexus One and kept bumping into local storage issues when getting under 25MB free.
Hope I don't have to go back to that phone, but I'm keeping it around for at least another 29 days.

I dig the zagg protectors you cant even tell it is there
Hi
I've been a huge fan of my Google Nexus One, but T-Mobile never played fair with it, and after finding myself literally stranded (bad idea to rely on the Navigation tool) because their network engineers kept cutting my data, I decided it was time enough to give up and go mainstream.
So a week ago or so I mustered the courage to walk into one of the disgusting neon-pink Tmo stores and look at their phones. Luckily, I was due for an upgrade, and was able to sell my Nexus One on CL for the same price as a brand new One S... :crying: Bye Nexus
Anyway, I got it activated and working yesterday, and I've been pleasantly surprised by the phone, I find it odd that my carrier would offer an actual, nice, android phone.
My biggest peeve is that the One S doesn't support external storage, like a MicroSD. When I asked the teenager at the puke-pink store, she told me it wouldn't be a problem, because the One S already has 2Gigs of RAM and 16Gigs of internal storage. "And 16 Gigabytes is a lot of space" I was told, which is true.
Except the phone doesn't have 16 Gigs of storage, is barely has 9.6 Gigs. I can understand 15-point-something gigs, heck I can understand 14-point-something gigs due to the phone using it, but 6 missing Gigabytes? That a lot less space than I was counting on..
Do the phones just come with 10 Gigs of internal storage, or does the stock Sense/Android stuff take up SIX WHOLE GIGABYTES? (cheating IMHO to advertise as though it isn't)..
Sorry to rant, I love this new phone otherwise and I'm still glad I went with HTC over the Samsung S3
Thanks!,

I'm an idiot, I totally missed the HELP THREAD. If someone feels this needs to be posted there instead, please tell me.

It's not that Sense takes up 6GB, it's that the flash is partitioned such that sectors such as /data take several GB even if empty. I guess the rule with this phone is never install apps to "SD", just keep them all on internal storage to maintain that full 10GB for your files.
The total storage is 16G.
10G is 'for you' and acts as the SD card would.
The other 6G is apps, app data, cache, radio, hboot, sbl, recovery, etc..
It does get 25G of dropbox, but that's not really as good as local storage.
Also, it has 1G, not 2G of RAM.
Basically, it means that you can't carry your media collection around on your phone, but it is still enough to carry a couple of albums, a movie, and take lots of pictures.
With this restriction, it is a very nice piece of equipment. Gorgeous body, bright and saturated screen, very snappy.
Enjoy!

Okay, that makes more sense, and if installing apps doesn't cut into the 10GB very much, I'll be happy. I guess that was another thing with the N1, I always had the ram and internal storage maxed out.

I believe the Nexus 4 16 GB has faster storagvwhen compared to the 8 GB will we see that with the 32 GB Nexus 5?

This can happen in SSDs. On the phone without knowing what type of controller tech is being used with the nand it's hard to say.
This is easily proved by benchmarks that show certain higher capacity SSDs earning higher speed benchmarks than the same models in smaller capacities.
Take a look here: http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/ssd-charts-2013/AS-SSD-4K-Q64-Random-Read,2786.html
See how the 840 Evo in 1gb beats the 840 pro 128 ? ( basically the evo is the step down from the pro line. But increase the capacity enough and it beats the Pro. )
But like I said I have no idea how the actual nand and what the controller setup is on the nexus 5.

Most probably because he ordered the 32gb Version
seriously I would think the other way...with sd cards it is known that the biggest cards are by far Not the fastest ones.
curently the fastest One are 32gb Versions.
taking that....I'd think that the bigger the space the slower it is.
but hell...WHO cares if they use anything like in my Xperia z tablet.
60mb/sec read and something like 35mb/sec write is twice as fast as in my samsung note1.
that really makes a difference.
by the way...I ordered a 32gb Version.

Actually I ordered a 16 GB Nexus 4 at the time and ordered a 16 GB Nexus 5 this time. So I was wondering.
in both case of traditional hdd and nand memory, bigger usually means faster, especially for nand memory.
More capacity usually comes with more channels, hence more simultaneous read/write operations.
I know it highly depends on the design/specification of the controller. But in NAND world, it's safe to say the statement holds in 99% of all cases.

im Not saying that he is wrong but fact is....the fastest 64gb card is just a mediocre 32gb card. But as he wrote it wont be related to less controllers/channels but the less good nand Chips i guess.
but since 32 gb cards are the fastest currently chances are good that speeds will be ok for the model I ordered

Sdcard are generally slower than internal flash memory, why do you think nexus devices do not come with sd slot, this is one of the reason. Do you honestly think they put an sdcard inside the Nexus phone?

well this has happened but it is very unusual especially with quality Made products.
but i think the storage is the Same built. just without the way via the sd card Format. the Chip is the Same i think.
it would be so easy if people with nexus5 would care to Test.
I dont really do that much. that is why I repeatedly say either the 16gb Version as the 32gb Version will be fast enough.
in fact how much was the difference between tbe 8gb and the 16gb Version on nexus4 btw?
but i'd the difference will be smaller this time since 16gb cards are pretty damn fast too.
probably the controller of the phone itself may cause a bottleneck where the Performance gets cuttedmso the may be even no difference at all when it comes to nexus5.

This is 99% not the case. The internal NAND chips have faster random read/write speed than the chips in sdcard most of the time. The controller in the sdcards are also slower than the build-in ones. In the case of GS4, the internal NAND is 6 time in random read speed and 3 times in random write speed of a class 10 sdcard placed in the sd slot.

in that case the sd card reader of the s4 is veeeeery Bad. cause the sd card in my Xperia z makes it above 40 mb/sec.
the internal storage though is still faster at something like 55mb/sek.
then there is the fact that you obvioulsy forgot that there are uhs-I cards that we can put in our sd card slots...I got One of those!
you shouldnt compare Ferrari with beetle to proove a point which only is true by Part.
finally there are sd Format cards available with speeds of 120mb/sec. but the sd controllers in our handheld devices are Not yet able to read them. So six times makes the internal Memory of the s4.....600mb/sec.
now thats fast. just because you dont Know something doesnt meant it isnt there!?
chinese tablets indeed have (the ones i Know) that Bad internal Memory that in fact a good sd card is faster than the internal Memory.
we dont Know what quality Google has told LG to build in. i just hope is somewhere like what is in Xperia z.

You are quoting continues read/write speed in the best case scenario. My test is small file random read/write which more like real day to day operation of a smartphoe. With a ush-i card inside, GS4 benchmarked at 13mb/sec and 7mb/sec. The same test performed on the internal is 71mb/sec and 40mb/sec.
ok. that is truely a different Situation there.
and YES the s4 really has powerful memory installed if those numbers are true.
now i wish LG has built in some of THAT stuff
I have a 32Gig S4.
Didn't get the S5 because the promised 32Gig system memory never materialized.
I am aware that I can add a micro sd card but that is not system memory.
Samsung announces a 4.7" iphone competitor and the 5.7" Note 4 and is not clear about delivery dates full pricing etc.
Apple comes along and announces iPhone 6 and 6 plus available in 2 weeks with up to 128GB system memory.
Samsung crawls under a rock with there plans for the 5.1-5.2" flagship segment with more system memory than 16gig.
Memory is so cheap. This makes no sense.
Looks like they have decided to give the market to Apple in the short term, why?
Maybe Samsung got a big foundry contract for the A8 chip and agreed to cool it for a few months.

Samsung rules the Android market, it makes absolutely no business sense they would step away from a cash cow.
I think the alpha is just that, an early build of a future product (rushed to market to compete w iPhone 6), and that's why they aren't offering a lot of onboard storage on that device. I'm positive that if they make a line of flagships that don't have external memory, they will offer 64/128 options.
I think you answered your own question regarding Sammy flagships in there current state... they are known for providing external storage options. That's why I keep coming back. I don't think they offer the large on board storage as there is very little demand for it. I can see your point with the s5 only coming in 16gb though, but I think Sammy is just getting started in the mobile business...

Yeah but out of the 16gigs they, 2gigs are used for system apps and at the end we only get about 10gb for storage?? That's lame.
I bet it just has to do with a bunch of internal politics. Its obvious the S5 didn't do as expected so I am sure many people over there are taking heat for it. No one wants to be responsible for another "flop". Possibly why they are trying out the alpha in other markets before bringing it to the US.
The above is obviously just my opinion.
I also can't stand manufacturers announcing a phone and not giving release dates.
retreat
Samsung is not retreating from the smart phone market, they are just maximizing their profits by a) kick ass marketing b) not updating phones c) crappy software d) cheap phones e) focus on Samsung for-profit apps
Which means, once the Galaxy S5 is in your hands they no longer care about it. I do feel in the future Samsung is going to take a major hit by the overall lack of quality they are putting out. Their technology is ahead of the game, but it doesn't tie together at all. The heartbeat sensor for example, cool yet useless for the most part. I doubt they'd become a Blackberry, or even an HTC, however one of these smartphone companies is going to get it right one day and offer up a device with the proper balance of upgrades/service/caring that people want out of a manufacturer.
I won't buy Samsung phones any longer, although my Galaxy S5 is pretty good. My GS5 is rooted, wifi tethering, de-bloated of Verizon apps, call recording, SD card unlocked. I am pretty satisfied with it but it just isn't "great".
Is the iPhone 6 great instead? What is wrong with the s5? I think it is perfect except for system memory.

Great points. Once the market becomes saturated they have to figure out ways to squeeze every dollar.
My biggest problems with the s5 is the trash speaker on the back, the "heft", and crappy front facing camera.
I wish the s5 was a refined s4, but obviously not what the market cares about.
Testing out a g3 now and I have to respect the thought that went into this phone. Obviously not perfect, but still they delivered a pretty good product.
And I definitely agree one day a manufacture will get the perfect android phone out...one day...
At first I liked my HTC M7 better than the S5, but after running the S5 for awhile now, I kinda like it better, especially with the Alliance Rom, it is killer. I think the iPhone 6 aka flex phone is a piss poor design, they didn't think that thing through very well. So imo Samsung still has the upper hand.
So, i just got the flex to, and i think its a really great phone. got the 16gb model cause thats the only one they had. Then i started to download all my apps when i noticed i only had 8 gb of storage basically. what the hell :s that is pretty lame. Is it just me that has like double up somewhere, or does it actuallly take up this much space?
6.06 for me. Its crap.
that is completely rediculous!. I want my damn 8gb back. its not like 16gb is all that great in the first place
This is pretty much the norm these day. You should feel lucky that at least it supports expandable storage.
still, i had a HTC One S 8gb before this phone, and that one actually had 8gb of storage
I have the same issue with my phone. That's why you need root, and then an sd card. Then you can put your apps on your external sd card, and don't have to worry about space.
