Apologize for my English....My phone is out of warranty. Got it on release, so I can't send it back to Google now.
I got some water damage when hiking in pouring rain last weekend. After letting it resting in rice for 2 days, it's mostly functioning, except the phone part.
For one thing, I lost LTE completely. I can still live with this, and am partially ok with it.
Screen was damaged, but touch function is still intact and the only thing visible is some pattern behind/on the screen, which I can live with as well.
The part that is not functioning, is the mic. Recording video works fine, since there is audio in the video. Calling other people doesn't work. The call would connect, but either headphone mic or the phone mic would pick up my voice. Phone would not pick my any voice when doing voice search either. I could hear the other party on call/voice just fine via headset, but no sound coming out of the top earpiece. Notification sound works, as well as alarms, but no sound would come out of the speaker playing Youtube video or music.
Is it only a part being damaged, or just get a new phone? Thanks XDA for advice!
Just get a new phone. Water damage is the hardest thing to try and fix on a phone. You have taken the right steps as far as rice and letting it sit for a few days. The only other thing you could try is to disassemble the phone and spray all parts down with an electrical degreaser(basically compressed alchohol). Honestly though the symptoms your describing might just be the tip of the iceberg. Oh, and a little pro tip to use with your next phone. When hiking or doing anything outdoors, always carry a small ziploc bag with you. If it starts raining put the phone and your wallet in it. That has saved me more than once.
I am kinda cheap and want to avoid spending another $200 on this....but seems I have to get a G2 or another Nexus 5.

Just got it about an hour ago. It's small and kinda cool looking.
Good things:
I like how it defaults to only playing the audio when it's actually docked, rather than just pairing when you're close to the dock. I was worried that it would be fighting with my bluetooth headphones. You can manually connect the bluetooth audio while not-docked by going into bluetooth settings.
Things I'd like to change:
1. I listen to mostly podcasts (via BeyondPod) and Pandora on my phone, which don't use the built-in media player. So, the shortcut on the clock app doesn't do anything for me. I'd like to disable the clock app or customize its buttons, or just change which app loads when the phone is docked. Any ideas on how to do this?
2. It doesn't really handle incoming calls gracefully while docked. If you answer the phone without undocking, it will not default to speakerphone (like the palm pre would). If you DO turn on speakerphone, it switches back to the phone speaker, which may or may not be what you want.
To be clear... you can play Pandora over the stereo if you go back to the app drawer or the Pandora widget and play from there, right?
oh yeah, all audio goes through the output, i'm just saying it's a bit annoying to have that clock app come up when I never want to use it.
I gotcha now... yeah, I can imagine. Although I will mostly be using the dock on my nightstand, so that's actually perfect for me. Seems that was their primary intended use of the dock...
Yeah, I'm using it at work and pumping the audio into my desktop. That way I have one set of headphones for computer and phone audio; I can keep listening to my podcasts where I left off, but I can also take OCS calls and so forth on the computer.
It's actually really nice that the dock sends the ringer and alerts through the audio-output because now I don't have to worry about bugging people around me with text message alerts, but I also don't have to adjust the ringer every time I leave my desk.
I understand others could be frustrated with this though. I think they should give you an option to leave the ringer on the phone and only send music to the audio-out.

Yes this gets me as well. It would be nice if the speaker phone went through the line out. I Have my dock hooked up to one of my laptops and from there pipe the sound into my headphones. I would like to be able to hit answer and use the microphone on the phone (in speaker phone mode) and listen through the piped audio of my headset. It is not a major problem but it is somewhat disappointing that there is not finer control over docked behavior
One thing I wanted to add (got mine today)...
You cannot place the phone in the dock while a case is on the phone.
I have the silicone case and thought I might be able to "carve" out the sides to make it work... but no go. Too thick.
It is not such a huge deal for the desktop dock, but I am concerned about the upcoming car dock. I don't really want to carry a "naked" phone.
Well I must say I am thoroughly disappointed with this dock. First thing I noticed, I'm listening to Pandora, I quit Pandora while it is on the dock and the phone is basically frozen for 30 seconds to a min. Not sure if that's common. But it does it every time on mine. Also, the audio quality is terrible out of the 3.5mm jack on the dock. I have my headphones there since I leave them connected at my work desk. It is drastically worse, quiet, tinny, no bass or mid. I don't want to have to connect my headphones every time I dock. All around this was a waste of 45 bucks.
Also to add it will backout fine to the clock screen, but not to the launcher screen.
Edit again, it is actually any app. If you back out to the launcher home screen not the clock the phone is in a perpetual state of locked up. Its not frozen but you cannot switch between screens ot do anything but go to the clock home screen.

They have engineers agonizing over every tenth of a mm in thickness, trying hundreds of different coatings to find the ones that look/feel good and (especially in the case of the nexus) are most resistant to scratching. Then people slap a big (often bulky and ugly) case on them and proceed to carry it around in their pocket or bag all the time where it wouldn't get damaged anyway.
I carried my touch cruise around for 2 years and sold it with barely a mark on it, and I even dropped it a couple times. My touch diamond 2 looks brand new after a good 6 months of hard use. I think the bigger worry is dropping the device. They aren't designed to resist scratching/breaking from a significant fall onto pavement/concrete. If you drop it 4+ feet onto concrete you are going to see some damage most likely. A case that's designed to absorb and dissipate shock will help to reduce damage in these instances - the same with a decent screen protector. Now, nothing is going to prevent all damage in some of these scenarios, but for a few bucks to get a bit more protection for a $500+ device is worth it for some people.
With that being said the Nexus One seems much better suited to live without a case for scratch resistance on both the screen and the body of the phone - far better than some of HTC's previous outings with their plastic cases and resistive screens that seemed to scratch quite easily.
Now, I've had some phones fall onto the pavement and they incurred only cosmetic damage. Outside of cracking the glass screen I don't see the Nexus One faring any worse from a fall, but people don't like cosmetic damage either and the skins or thin TPU cases will aid in distributing force from impact and protect the device from scratches/dings for small impacts.
yeah, no doubt there are a few situations where damage could be avoided with a case, but I guess I think of them like those bras people put on the front of their cars. They used to be a lot more popular, then they kinda died out, even though it's certainly still very common for your front bumper to incur damage. I think people just decided it's not worth having the pretty car if you're covering it up all the time. The same goes for putting plastic on your furniture. I don't want to put up with a bulkier device from day 1 just so I can take off the case 3 years from now and see a mint but obsolete device hiding under it. To each their own, of course.

Also you have to make sure not to bump your desk too hard or touch the phone because if it moves in the dock it loses its connection and turns bluetooth off and then your music starts playing through the phones speaker lol. I think overall this thing is no good. I may ebay mine

Something doesn't sound right there....I can literally rock my desk (probably not good for the legs >.>) and it doesn't disconnect - although I've got 2x 24" widescreen monitors that seem like they are getting ready to tip.
Lifting the device from the dock physically does disconnect the audio, but the music player pauses immediately to prevent the music from playing over the phone's speaker until I manually hit play again. Are you using the stock music player?
A quick lift in and out does not cause a disconnect for me, it takes a few seconds (~2 seconds) or being out of the dock to disconnect and pause the music (e.g if I lift it for 1s and then put it back down it doesn't disconect and continues playing audio through BT the entire time). The same if I rock it in the dock manually.

I don't see any issues that would be caused by using headphones with it...they seem to work just fine.
Well mine initially pauses then a few seconds later pandora will start playing again. I am not sure about music in the android music application but with pandora thats my issue.i touched the home button or even i hold the phone down in the dock tight and adjust the volume and it disconnects.

Using slacker radio i do see that it doesn't pause when it disconnects - it does take a few seconds out of the dock still for me for the audio to disconnect, a quick jarring or lift/replace doesn't seem to cause it to disconnect - but then it does play music through the phone speakers. The stock audio player doesn't do this (it pauses until manually resumed).

There is definitely a drop out of lows using the Dock (using my 10 yr old Sennheiser HD 535) compared to the audio jack on the phone itself.

very well said. i would hate to drop my $570 dolla gadget without a case on it. at least with a case i have a 50/50 chance of it not getting damaged or less damaged as bad as it would without one.
In august, i accidentally poured some tea on my Samsung Wave (S8500). The only one problem is that the phone crashes when a call arrives or when i hit the green bottom to start a call, and i can only remove the battery to restart the system. But, exactelly what is broken on my phone? Modem is ok, because i can send and receive SMS and use internet; microphone is ok, because i can record sounds; speaker has a lower volume, but i can hear music and sounds. Then, what else? Moreover yesterday, when i recived a call, the phone was ok, and i could speak. But on the next call the phone crashed again.. Someone knows which could be the problem? And someone knows how to solve it?

There's over thousand of components in the S8500, so it's pretty hard to guess. Disassemble your phone, get isopropyl alcohol, and just wash your mainboard in it. Then wait until it dries out (up to few hours) and reassemble it. Remember that you might need to use some glue because isopropyl will dissolve all glued surfaces. Also remember to take off all EMF shields from your mainboard (these metal plating). Aswell consider that it might not help, but get things worse if you don't wash it good enough.
This method is commonly known. If you google for it you might also find recommending of putting whole phone into isopropyl, but I don't recommend that as things like screen are also glued together with digitizer and it can start to tear off after putting into alcohol.

Disassemble the phone is the best thing to do.. But the truth is that the phone is not mine, but my girlfriend's one. Moreover i've never disassembled anything; i don't want create more problems than now. I was thinking to play long time with a complex graphics game, and make the phone overheat. This shold melt residues of tea.. This can work?

One of the main reasons I bought a Z3 is because it is apparently dust and water resistant, this is a big plus working in construction, but the fact these phones have recieved IP ratings is a joke. I had my z3 sitting at the side of the shower playing music, it wasn't recieving direct flow of water just droplets splashing on to it. I now have a crackly, low volume speaker. Waterproof my ass.
Have the phone drying out now but I don't expect it to rectify itself. What are my options here?
This issue has been discussed countless times... just let it dry. It'll come back to normal.
its actually water filling up around the speakers and takes a bit to dry out, quite common with waterproof speakers. all my previous sony phones have done this when they get wet, give it 30 minutes or so. dont sweat your phone getting damaged

It's not a problem, but a normal characteristic of waterproof speakers.
If you read the user manual they explain that it is normal and can take up to two hours to dry, although in practice that is always 30 mins for me or less.

when there is water on the membrane which creates the soundwaves this changes how it moves and thus how it sounds. That is just physics @ work and not the fault of sony
Hello, last night i decided to wash myphone under the my shrink. After that also i had low speaker volumes. My lower speaker completly died but after an hour or two came back to live. Now my phone passed 14th hour since i washed it but still the volumed didnt went back to normal. Should i go to Sony Center or wait a little bit longer?
I dropped some baked beans on my Z3 and the sound was muffled for a couple of weeks until I realised I obviously hadn't washed it properly.
Now it's still a lot quieter than the top speaker, but I think that's normal? I'm not sure now, which is annoying.

I've had my Nexus 5 for over 3 years now and it has seen countless ROMs, Kernels, rooting, all that kind of stuff. I also bought it in white and decided after some time that I want a black one so I bought a frame and a back panel and moved everything over to the new assembly. Shortly, it has seen a lot of mods.
My father used it for some time and one day he droped it and the microphone didn't work anymore in calls.
The problem was simple: in calls or while recording audio on whatsapp and such, the mic didnt work. While playing back the recording, there was a slight noise, just as you would keep the record button pushed but not talk and let it record only background noise. I can't remember, though, if while in call and on speaker the mic worked.
I bought a used flex cable with mic, charging port and everything on it (of which I was told was new), switched the old one with it and while playing back the recorded audio you can hear an awful distortion with slight oscilations as where the words should fit in.
However, the other person can hear me while in call and on speaker, but the sound is very, very bad.
My guess is that the mic on the flex cable that I bought was broken as well.
I thought of going ahead an buying another flex from a more trusted seller, but I'd like to get some advice firstly.
I tried anything that could be done with the software, this clearly is a hardware problem. What do you think I should check? What could be broken besides what i already know?

Audio rec and calls use different microphones, however, I believe your problems are due to the connector slot on the PCB itself not due to flex cables. Just visually inspect your flex cables, do you see any strong fold lines or torn sections? If not it is quite unlikely.
Regarding the connector slot, find some repairmen who is able with a heat gun and flux, who can lift things from a pcb without damaging stuff. They can either reposition it or replace it.

Thank you for your answer. I know I'm replying after almost one year, but I have given up fixing the old Nexus. Maybe I will try opening it up again and checking what you said, but I don't think it is worth it anymore. I still power it up from time to time, just for the old days. Heh. ?

So all of the sudden the main microphone on the bottom of the phone stopped working. So I can only talk now using earbuds or on speakerphone, and ran the diagnostics which said contact samsung, who put me in touch with some third party.
Does anyone know if it's something I could repair myself or do I have to take it in to be fixed and about how much would each cost.
The only phones I have repaired before ha a straight class no curve. And no longer have a precise digital hotplate.
Or are there a another things I should be considering here? I have tried to look to see if there is dirt or anything but even using a jewelers loupe I couldn't really see anything.

What happened before the "all of the sudden"?
If there was dirt in the inlet channel to the microphone, the microphone should pick up muffled sounds during the propagation of a strong acoustic wave.
What produced the message on the screen you attached?
If it's a hardware defect in the phone then you won't fix it yourself cheaper than at a service center, because you don't have spare parts and experience.
Usually immediately before the repair you should be informed of the cost. Calculate if it is cost-effective for you. Sometimes after such repairs there are further problems, because the main cause has not been removed
If it was blown or had a puncture, deformation or dirt then yes there would be some distorted sounds but I have tried recording audio in other apps.
There is a very short like disconnection click when recording out of that mic. Doesn't happen when I record from the other mic. But does make the same click of I start voice recorder but then no voice.
Didn't drop it or get it or get it dirty. Maybe I got a little moisture on it whenever I take a shower, but really not much, and the mic sealed. If it was the pcb board for the mic, that's like 15-20 on eBay, and if it's the actual mic like wiring, or driver I would just need the part number for the mic.
The image on the screen is from when you go through: Device care, then diagnostics. It gives the options to test all the functions that make your phone usable. I did then I reformatted. Did the tests again.
Yes you are right they said they couldn't give a price but maybe around 150.
I just sort of like fixing things yet have never attempted removing curved screen and without precise temp control I would worry about the battery.
I have most the tools and have removed flat screen glass on a 3d printers base hot plate. But because of the curve I wonder if it would need something to hear the edge at the same time.
I'm also on workers comp right now trying to save some money and curious if anyone has had a similar experience or at least had success fixing hardware problems or curved glass phones
Also just figured out that I can use my earbuds with bixby but can not get bixby or google to do voice to text through my Galaxy buds
