[Q] Any updates on rooting? - Verizon HTC One (M8)

I've held off on Lollipop. Still running 4.4.4 even though it keeps bugging me to update. I've been waiting since early January for a free alternative to Sunshine, which I'm not even sure would work since Weaksauce didn't do anything and running Sunshine didn't even tell me anything. Figured there might be a new method or something now. Anyone know?

There's no motivation whatsoever for someone to put the kind of work that @jcase and @beaups put into their s-off solution without having some sort of return on investment. I say that because the work required to do so does not come free.

2.2.1 update....

Woke up this fine morning to an update awaiting me. I also have a G2, and that didnt get the update. So...MT4g=2.2.1 and G2=2.2 Not even sure what the difference is as I have had a N1 since day1.
yea i got the same update, i've been trying to figure out what the difference is although now i'm wondering if it has something to do with me not being able to download Visionary anymore.

Wrong Visionary is still compatible with 2.2.1. I'm using it right now. got it from the market. Sometimes you have to clear the market cache and reboot to trigger download over network data. I think it is a bug.
I had to keep visionary from rooting, and it then offered the update. I re-installed visionary and back to temp root. Tethering and hot-spot still OK.
TMO is supposed to now roll out "tethering" for 14.99/month in a week or so. Am wondering if they are going to be able to block it on these devices, which are working pretty good now.
This has been discussed on a different thread. The main changes seem to be the browser and one other thing. I'm on my phone so i can't link the thread. search my other posts. I thinK that I have a post that has about it.

[Q] Is anyone working on a permanent root for the 2.3.3?

I was trying to root my gf's phone then found out it don't work on 2.3.3! Is anyone working on a perm root for 2.3.3? The temp root don't help me out because she is wanting to flash different roms on the phone.
Is there anyway to get the phone back to 2.2 so I can perm root it?

Thanks but I have googled it and everything it pulled up was already looked at by me so it's not that I haven't searched. Just haven't heard of anyone making any leaps towards perm root. The fre3vo temp root don't help me much.
I found this guide.... http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Evo_Shift_4G:_Full_Update_Guide I'm guessing it isn't for the 2.3.3 OTA updated Evo Shift 4G or is it?

i posted it in one of these many threads here last night that i asked agrabren about it and he said he cant do anything cause he doesnt have one to work with and hes one of the main ones that did fre3vo but hopefully one of thems looking into it for us
My g/f got me a Motorola Photon and I rooted getting it ready for when more development comes as way of roms. She had 2.2 on hers and I asked when she updated it and she said she didn't. She got her phone last December so she had to update it to 2.3.3 right?
Anyways I heard sprint can rollback to 2.2 but they usually won't because they don't want people going back so they can root their phones.
I have a friend at Radioshack, do authorized retailers have the ability to rollback to 2.2?

i tried to see if the sprint store here could roll mine back cause the tech person has a shift also and even she said they cant roll em back cause shes pissed she took the ota and got stuck on 2.3.3 too.
I Highly doubt ANYONE will get a perm root for 2.3.3 for sometime.... its already been out what a couple of weeks now. so im updating my phone because this gingerbread update is bugged like crazy... constant crashes after leaving every app. not receiving any calls or txts half the time, and WIFI is broken.

i know. but im going INSANE!!!! after ever damn app i close the white screen with the green HTC comes up for like 1 min. then the loading of the home screen. i see the damn thing at least 200 times a day. im already looking towards a new phone all together... dealing with that for a few weeks gets irritating extremely fast.
It is really annoying. I am just going to wait for root, put CM7 on it, and give it to my Mom or something...
I hate to see the root issue keep getting sugar coated by people that already have root, including me. Just to be brutally honest, its been 2 and a half months since the Shift was updated and I really haven't seen much evidence of any one working on root. I do remember one tweet from about month ago mentioning the Shift but beyond that its been pretty quiet. I'm not saying its never going to happen, and for all I know someone is working diligently behind the scenes, all I'm saying is don't get too high of hopes that its going to happen soon..... Hopefully I'm wrong though.
If people were paying for this I would see more of a reason for people to ask all the time. I know I am new to these forums but even I get annoyed with it. I want my Shift rooted just as much as the next guy. It's free, get over it.
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA Premium App
Im sure people would pay for it. People have offered to donate phones and such plus once a device is rooted developers can create root only apps.
Most of the devs do it for the challenge tho... Not everything is about money. That said im sure anyone that came out with a perm root would get donations for doing so.

im giving it one more week from today. if not im sticking to the GB updates till they decide to catch up.
well hopefully all of you have learned from your mistakes and won't take a OTA update ever again if your phone is rooted
My photon is rooted. My girlfriend mistakenly hit ota update on her shift before I told her what rooting and custom rims do.

[Q] 4.4.3

I know this may seem a bit selfish, having just got 4.4.2, but what are our chances of getting 4.4.3 as the bugfix update that I'm hoping comes out to fix the WiFi/Bluetooth bug among others?
I'd be happy with a bugfix just to fix these bugs even if it wouldn't upgrade us to 4.4.3, but I haven't found anything online about a potential update coming from either Motorola or Verizon unfortunately.

I just received an email for a new soak test for the RAZR HD. Not sure if it's for 4.4.3, but I think it will address the issues some have experienced with blue tooth and texting, but I don't know for sure.
I would say, get Towelroot applied right now and unlock your bootloader, since 4.4.2 apparently re-introduced the exploit to allow unlocking the bootloaders on the XT926 phones. So, unlocking the bootloader will guarantee that you can sideload SU to obtain root one the newer OTA comes out.
Do it now because I highly doubt this will work after the new OTA. The Android gods have smiled down upon those with locked bootloaders and have given you a second chance on doing this. Don't lose this chance now that it has been given back to you for a second time.
Thankfully I unlocked the first time an exploit was available. I made the mistake of blindly taking the OTA that fixed the exploit then got lucky my replacement phone was on the software level before the exploit was patched. First thing I did was unlock it haha
I've actually been holding off on root in the hopes of a bug fix coming. I'd rather not go through the process of unrooting a couple weeks after I get everything the way I want it just to have to get the bug fix OTA. But that's good to know there's a new soak test incoming. 4.4.3 or not, it'll be welcome.

[Q] Quick Read and Answers, I Promise! Please answer.

Quick question/opinions for folks: I am getting my phone back from HTC tomorrow. The USB charging port was worn down and I had a minor crack in the screen. They originally wanted $200 for the fix because "they had to remove the screen to get to the USB port" so "installing a new screen had to be done" bla bla bla. I found a warranty discrepancy and ended up getting it all fixed for free (including a brand new screen!). So, I was running ABC and XYZ ROM's (obviously no point in saying what ones) before I sent it back. I did a full wipe via TWRP as well. How have people gotten their phones back via warranty from HTC? Like, your original phone sent back to get fixed and sent back to you? Not an overnight shipment of a refurb...but your own phone back?
What I am basically asking is: how does the phone come back internally (software wise). Will there be an unlocked, s-off bootloader like I had it? Will it still be S-Off? I have tried to ask this question in the main sections to no avail. When my phone comes back stock...the guy from HTC, it sounded like it would come back as Android 4.4.4 KitKat? If it's not rooted, s-off, unlocked and all that good stuff...am I better off waiting to get cracking away on the software side of things until the official Verizon OTA comes through? I am assuming it's Sense 7 and hopefully Lollipop 5.1. People have said rooting 4.4.4 is much easier than trying it on Lollipop. I would like to know what I'm in for once I get my toy back? This Samsung Droid Charge has actually been really fun to use for the past 10 days haha. Please PM me your answers/thoughts/opinions/experiences. No need to post here anymore. Like I said...I am sorry for posting here, but I had no other choice.

If it's your phone they send back they may swap the board to cover the port.
The old HTC repair facility in Houston would flash and revert your board to whatever was the latest os. They would also revert any s or unlock status. The new repair facility in Tennessee has been missing stuff left and right...so post your results. I'm curious what you get back.

Hey dude, I finally was able to get back to your PM, hit me back up in PM if you have any more questions. The man regarding the S-OFF if you do get the phone back with the new 5.0.1 software is actually the man above me in this post. Great amazing guy!
As for the phone, I assume that it will come back on the latest OTA which is 5.0.1 and unfortunately SunShine (the S-OFF tool) only supports up to 4.4.4. So you will need to ship it to someone with a JavaCard my personal suggestion - the man above.
I have yet to have to send any of my devices to HTC for any fixes so unfortunately I do not know for sure, but I don't think it will be coming back with 4.4.4 but rather the latest OTA 5.0.1.

Thanks for the reply @dottat! You seem to always find my questions/responses/suggestions and offer up some good tips :good:
I chatted with HTC online and the guy said I would be getting the phone back with 5.0.2. I didn't want to push the issue with rooting, unlocking, etc by asking him. TBH I think I did ask him about it being harder to root and he said, which I thought was funny, "I'm sorry it's more difficult...but I have no idea what you're talking about" hahahaha. I will DEFINITELY post here tomorrow after I charge up my phone and see what happens. I'm just going to boot normally and that's it. I won't even do a HTC Restore. I want to see how it is. Maybe I'll be lucky and get Sense 7? I doubt it though.
Be ready for a notification tomorrow. I'll need your help tomorrow so I can start flashing some bomb ass @andybones ROM's as well as the ones you work on!

You would be correct...I'm 99.9% sure but the HTC Chat guy said it would be 5.0.2. I, like I mentioned above, am also hoping for Sense 7 but I doubt it. Even VZW hasn't put out that OTA.
My question to both @dottat and @andybones : should I just wait to root and do all that stuff after our expected next OTA from Verizon which should be, AT LEAST, Sense 7.0? Any chance they'd come out with Android 5.1 along with it? I ask because I'd rather be on stock everything if I can get it. I don't even know if I can flash TWRP to flash any of the ROM's you guys work on. Am I correct in that? Thanks for all the help past, present and future fellas. You do realize the current ota is not able to be s-off'd right? So taking another one if it landed would only likely compound things. I would get it s-off using any means possible asap (Java card/sunshine/etc).
Also, to comment on your charging port replacement. (And you may not like my opinion here).
You should be gracious in the fact they did this for free. Taking apart this phone is a pain in the ass when the screen isn't broken because it takes some prying to pop it out of the shell. Anyone that says you don't have to remove screen to replace the charging port hasn't removed the guts on one with a broken screen. You end up breaking it a whole lot worse than it was. Trust me on that. HTC reasonably would NOT work on a phone where they are likely to make things worse. Afterall, they didn't break the screen.

I agree with the above post, S-OFF as soon as possible, there is no benefit to waiting. If you're lucky enough too use SunShine go that route - but if on an Android version they don't support I 100% suggest going java card. I used java card for S-OFF onmy my M7 and more recently on my M9.
As for the screen @dottat he had a crack and was willing to pay for it if HTC ended up breaking it in the charging port fixing, however due to a discrepancy that Vic found he was able to pay for the charging port fix while getting g a new screen for free as per HTC's fault in their wording. (Vic please correct me if I'm mistaken here.)

Part of my response here was in regards to what had been posted in other non-relevant threads. The question was asked as to whether it was required to remove the screen to replace the USB port. On the M8, the screen assembly comes out attached to the mainboard and battery etc. In order to remove it from the aluminum back you must pry it gently in order to remove it. If the screen had an existing defect prior to this process, it's sure to shatter in the removal process as during the normal process the glass must flex (something a broken/cracked screen would likely fail to do). While the screen doesn't technically get removed from the mainboard and battery...the worst part of the process is actually the spudging required to free the entire assembly from the back.

Okay guys. I have my phone up and running and updating apps. Currently it's running 4.4.4. I have the ability to NOT install the updates (it says there are two updates).
So:
4.4.4
Sense: 6.0
Should I just let it update to Lollipop?
EDIT: TO clarify: The charging port was under warranty. Somehow they were trying to fleece me for $200. I had a total cost of zero dollars to do all of this. Just a 2 week span without the phone!

Glad you have your phone back man. (You are very lucky it came back with 4.4.4!)
Doug answered the question already.. but I also did before as well (see my earlier post - I have included in this post, I highlighted it in red ..)
SunShine supports Android 4.4.4 it does NOT support lollipop.
Thus, if you want root/S-OFF you can either stay on 4.4.4 use SunShine and get S-OFF without the device leaving your hands.
Or, upgrade to lollipop and have to send your device out to someone with a JavaCard. (Not the ideal method when you can have S-OFF within minutes)
I would stay on 4.4.4 use SunShine to S-OFF (a well worth $25 fee)
Then, you simply go to the development section (or maybe it's in general) and flash the latest RUU for the HTC One M8 Verizon.

Awesome folks. Just awesome. Sunshine it is! I was able to gain S-Off and Unlock my Bootloader and Root all for free when I did it back in July. Is there a change in that method? I remember using WeakSauce and that's about it. I remember not paying for it that's all. And now I do. I can go to HTCDev and that won't work either now. I'm kinda pissed haha. So Sunshine is my only option then, correct? Thanks again for the assistance.

If you read the SunShine thread, firewater is what you used for free, and is now SunShine, WeakSauce is just for root, not S-OFF/unlock of bootloader. Root will not allow flashing of custom recovery and ROMs.
The people behind SunShine don't do this for free, so they now charge $25, more than worth it.
(that or figure out a way to do S-OFF and you provide it for free)
(I believe they started charging per S-OFF because their used to be "bounty" threads on XDA for the S-OFF methods, and they'd get maybe 10% of the people who promised to pay. Not fair and not worth their time and efforts.)
Let's just be thankful we have people like the SunShine crew doing this for us, and only charge $25, they could literally charge whatever they want, people like us want S-OFF, and I'd easily pay $50.
Without these guys providing S-OFF, I personally wouldn't be on an HTC device.
I personally don't see why you are pissed? We are quite lucky, IMO.
Or stay stock.

I read through it all and have no issues with the $25 at all. I was just curious because I never had to pay, that's all. I don't mind $25. It's a 30 rack!

Maybe I read it wrong, but you said you were "kinda pissed".
I am glad you see it the way it should be, however. I was just explaining to you why it is no longer free. Wasn't trying to give you any crap.

I think we had a miscommunication misstep there. No hard feelings meant anywhere! And guess what? I got an additional 100GB free Google Drive Storage hahahahaha...unless everyone is getting it now. Then I'd just feel like a jackass.

Also, the tech dude who worked on my phone left me a couple selfies....
This has been amusing so far. And not to take away from my previous device...but this one is so much better. Smoother screen, smoother UI, quicker, etc. Unless it's because I'm still on KitKat. I'll Sunshine it this weekend.

All good. You must be on kitkat to use SunShine....
If you upgrade to lollipop you will have to ship phone oit to a person with a java card costing more than $25 and be without phone for 5+ days.
(Unless your kitkat comments referring to being a newer version than what you were previously on, to which we don't know what that was).
Nothing neew concerning the storage (iirc)
The selfiies however are quite humorous.

No no...I get the whole Sunshine thing. I researched WeakSauce and Firewater and they've just said to go Sunshine. Must be making good money though. I'm going to stay stock for a bit and just have some fun like this. Being back on KK is fun, in a weird way. Just like the guy fixing my phone in that pic haha.
We're good dude. I am actually happy to pay the $25 and have everything done for me and guaranteed to work or my money back!
The extra 100GB in the cloud is CLUTCH for me. I think DRIVE assumes I have a new phone which comes with the extra 100GB. I'm just having fun.

I know you've said it 3 times....I'm STAYING on KitKat until I use Sunshine, no worries there

Is anybody close to unlocking the latest bootloaders, or is it unlikely?

I (very) recently got a Verizon Galaxy S6 and (stupidly) allowed the updates to run :silly:. I should have known better, as I went through the unlocking/rooting process with Verizon's S3. I could live with it for a bit if people think it will be unlocked in the near future (I'm on VRU4BOG9), but if there's a reason that it's unlikely that it will ever be unlocked, I can still return it and cancel my plan. I could just change carriers, but it's a little tricky because it involves my wife's phone/line, as well.
Does anyone have any information or opinions regarding this?
Thanks!
I'm with you in the same boat.
It was past the baseband even before i let the updates run.
I doubt there will be anything. This forum is pretty dead. No developers etc. I am going to look into getting a tmobile s6 and see if I can unlock, root and get it working on verizon. I think it can be done I've just not looked into it yet so not for sure.

Stagefright might allow root. I'm waiting to see.

t-mo has CDMA radio?
or you plan to run LTE only?
i would be interested to find out as well
It's unlikely.. as some of the recent dev posts have made clear samsung is the ultimate anti-developer company... as such most of the dev's that would normally work on this have moved on to other brands. It's also gotten to the point that it's almost impossible to actually unlock.. they almost always work around it rather than unlock it, and there are only so many of these workarounds out there.
It may get rooted again, but it will be very unlikely that the bootloader gets unlocked.. basically our only hope would be a leaked test bootloader thats already unlocked.. But I've only ever heard of this happening once.
Take it back while you can. Had my s6 rooted on 5.0.2 but there was no xposed support or xposed for it. If you enjoy rooting your phone the outlook is not good. Not much going on with this scene. After owning mine for just 2 months I sold mine on eBay and am headed towards a nexus. Not a bad phone but not good for flashing...I will do my research next time before getting a Samsung !

It's not Samsung, IT'S Verizon that's locking Us out.

It's Samsung that lets Verizon lock us out. They let companies throw their logo on it still so...
How about Chainfire
EXPERIMENT: Root without modifying /system (you can search for it here on XDA)
I hope it could actually work soon!

That's sad

Becoming less and less happy that I bought this phone. Especially on the payment plan. I may have to bite the bullet, pay it off and just sell it for whatever I can get. Sucks. I loved my fascinate, my S3, and my S4. Been using my Moto Maxx 2 more and more lately. THAT'S SAD.

Besides the Nexus what model phones are now dev friendly? I was looking at a G4 but apparently LG is just like Samsung with the nearly uncrackable locked bootloaders now.
s5 just got full bootloader unlock..
Is it Verizon or the Exynos chip that's holding back development on this device? ELI5
Sent from my XT1565 using Tapatalk
It's the customized software that samsung builds for Verizon that limits access to root and bootloader. Without having root privileges, you can not make any system changes let alone access it. The chip has nothing to do with this.
s5 just got bootloader unlock BUT the dev has not said he will release anything. It may never happen on this device. having said that the debloater is the key to a smooth device with good battery. If debloating is all you need, that can be done without root.
After debloating about 150 apps on my s6, I can get days and days on battery with minimal use.
This who ordeal with Samsung screwing us on the S6 is making me want to switch to a Nexus...
