Anyone else get an update text message from AT&T? I am running Assonance 2.0
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Yea I got a text running perception 5. Not sure its froyo or a really late text for jh7.
I've been getting them for the last few days, though I'm not willing to flash to find out lol....
I got it shortly after flashing to cognition 2.3b6 - checked for new OTA updates and didn't get anything.
Just tried and failed to connect to server.. though it's probaly nothing. Been a lot of posts about people getting texts to update (I haven't gotten one, I'm running stock JH7). I think it's just AT&T trying to get everyone to update to JH7.
From androidforums.com:
"This has been happening for a while now. People who are running anything other than Samsung/AT&T firmware have been getting these notices."

Nope. Stock.
1. AT&T doesn't know what firmware you are running. They are STILL sending out general update notifications to remind people to update to JH7.
2. There are two other threads in the forum, on the front page discussing the same topic...LOL. Come on guys.
For whatever it's worth, I spoke with three AT&T techs today, from common answerer, all to UPPER LEVEL WIRELESS TECH, and the answers I got from all three, screwed my thinking, which at times, AT&T does well. The OTA to side-load they been speaking of, IS NOT A SOFTWARE UPDATE, as I thought it had to be, but online instructions, on how to make am adjustment, Menu, then Settings, to stop BLOCKING the install of NON MARKET APPS, like from Amazon. I thought the OTA, was a software 'patch' that would fix the blocking of apps not from the Market, but they all told me, that the OTA, was really a set of steps, that showed you how to make the MANUAL ADJUSTMENTS, on my Captivate. Maybe I'm the only one feeling like an idiot over this, but that is how I was left feeling. They sent not one, but two different text mess., that for some reason, didn't do a thing, so the upper level tech, tried walking me through the adjustment, his own self, but he flat failed to tell me how. He finally suggested, that since it was Amazon's appstore app I was trying to install, and my Captivate still was BLOCKING the install, to ask AMAZON for help, in case THEY KNOW how to make the adjustments on the Captivate, or better, to ask SAMSUNG, since it's their phone. The guy was nice..., but why do I feel shafted for paying outrageous premiums for service from AT&T, but when I ask for help, I get shoved along to someone else, for them to help me?
Has anyone heard, that the OTA, is NOT SOFTWARE, but actually instructions, to make in your phones settings? If anyone could give a rational explanation of this to me, I'd appreciate it. My AT&T Samsung Captivate, is a great phone, to me, but AT&T, leaves a lot to be desired. Any suggestions?
Please don't hijack threads.
Anyways if it is instructions then they will need to push out an ota to even enable the option. They removed the option to prevent people from enabling it to begin with.

Last night my wife's phone completely hung. Had to use 3-button combo to get into recovery and reboot. After reboot, Device Management was running endlessly. Tried to kill it but it wouldn't stop. Tried to use TIBU to freeze it but TIBU wiuldn't open. Finally killed it by clearing Device Management data. Went into TIBU again and froze it. Unbelievable. Her phone is stock 2.2 but rooted. 2 hours later, I noticed on my phone that Device Management was running (notification bar). Went through the same sequence to kill it and freeze it. I will never defrost this!!
On my stock 2.2 not rooted cappy it was enabled just by turning the phone off and back on a couple of days ago.

What is with all of the commas? Load a rom and don't worry about any ota from AT&T!
This is my Captivate. There are many like it but this one is mine
no problem here rogers Canada ftw side loading enabled from the beginning. and as for the messages if you want them to stop just block them. and chances are if your on this site you have sideloading anyways
Side loading
Apparently there is an update that has to be pushed to your phone from AT&T, but hardly anyone has received it yet. People in this thread are working on adding this feature without the update. This method will allow you to install non android market apps, but so far it disables your mms capability.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1111278
Free tethering/wifi hotspot
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=980591
By changing a few settings, you can have tethering/use wifi hotspot without adding a tethering plan from AT&T.
Maybe we could add future developments to this thread as they become available. I like the idea of leaving my phone stock so that it will automatically update.
Are you talking about the "silent" OTA that enables side-loading?
If so, and if by hardly anyone, you mean "hardly anyone here on XDA," it may be because they are rooted or otherwise running a custom ROM that will prevent them from getting OTA updates.
If you mean hardly anyone here on XDA that is bone stock, well, that might be true. And it also might be true that the recently discovered method of enabling sideloading will help some people, who don't mind their mms broken until some workaround fixes it.
Or they can root, and be done with it. There's nothing that will ever be OTA that I would want to get OTA anyway -- it will be available here shortly after.
The only excuse people have to not root is that it *appears* to be difficult. It really isn't. You can enjoy the same exact phone with a stock ROM, but with the added perks that rooting brings. Yes, that includes sideloading. And SIM unlock. And no more bloatware.
However, if this sideloading trick can be perfected, and it will keep people who otherwise don't have the patience to root their phones and as a result would just screw them up, causing them to further not spend the time to read and search, instead firing off 1000's of redundant "Halp Me!" posts, then that's a good thing.
ehh I would just rather use adb.... (if I was stock)

Yeah, OP, you should definitely include a link to the adb method, or the Sideload Wonder Machine method.
I used SWM to install Swype weeks before I got the AT&T non market option (which was a week before I rooted).

The adb method for sideloading an app is already discussed in mudknot's stickied guide.
Supposedly there is still an update floating around for unknown sources. If I happen to get my hands on it I will post it.
That's the only reason I haven't updated the side loading part of the guide. If the update gets pushed to every phone with in the month then it would be obsolete quick. I might add it just to have the most information possible... Though I will not put this method on there, because there is no reason you should have to give something up to gain something (captivate anyone?)..
Still stock here, without the non-market update.
No issues at all using the SWM. I didn't like that whole stupid "dropbox" method mentioned. It's easier and faster to just to use "disk drive" mode to copy the apk files onto the PC.

Absolutely agreed. Your guide should be reserved for known methods that provide the desired result without sacrificing other functionality.
I really don't see what all the excitement is about, regarding this new method. I mean, side loading has been a non-issue for rooted devices from the start, now it's *officially* a non-issue, even for bone stock devices.
This new method might have been a useful workaround for stock phones before ATT changed course on sideloading, now not so much.
Im coming from a droid x and find to root this alittle challenging. While I cant get root I havent found one that I like. My whole purpose if to just get rid of bloat. After my last attempt I got crappy reception and wanted to unroot. I did and reception was back to normal. After all the problems and what with the gingerbread files I didnt want to go that route with that radio. So what are my options? With the last root attempt I used the 1 click method, was that my problem? Do I need to read up more on adb commands. Or should I say screw it and stay stock? There are multiple roms out there but havent found one for my particular needs. I know I bought this phone to learn more and be a challenge but this is trully a pain in the ass. So comments advise is greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't give up if i were you, rooting is the way to go. And ya thunderbolt is "different" but it seems from here on out most lockdown phones will be this perplexing at times, but good news to use, some companies have given up and will open up there future phones boot loaders. And its not because it lock down it just because they weren't "meant to be rooted and optimized for the user".
It seems weird that your reception got worse due to rooting, i have not heard that problem before or seen it posted in these threads. Most of the complants from rooting is either having random reboots, or the unfortunate brick or root didn't actually work for them.
Just make sure your up to date with the froyo radio when you were rooted, I know you cant check now, but maybe you used an older one the auto root method was using? Its worth a check. The newest one has had some good reception Verizon sent in a OTA.
And i used an auto one click way and it worked for me so it may depend on what one you used. But its advised to use adb.
Also there are a lot of basic de-bloat roms out there, they are just buried at the end of this forum, and never get updated because once they are de-bloated there is not much left that needs to be updated.
And dont worry about the Gingerbread problems, I wish i never left Gingerbread, i have had more problems on froyo then i was on gingerbread. With froyo i still have problems, but Gingerbread seems to run so smoothly, and a new leak is hopefully around the corner, there was one up but it was taken down and senior moderators said its coming be patience.
hope this helps
All rooting does is give you access to system files. There's no way that it would mess up your radio.
I'm also curious where the "1 click method" is.

Thanks for the link, in my search I had a couple of other ways to do it but I did search.
Rooting is the only way to TRUELY enjoy this phone and all it has to offer IMO.
Ok well all of a sudden my phone cant receive call or make them but can make and receive texts? Any ideas on that. I got a phone call yesterday but it was a little wack. Called tech support and now no calls.
First thing I wanna do is root the phone and put sense rom 3.0 on there... Can any software version be able to rooted or do I have to look for a certain version when I buy the phone tomorrow...
Any

Yes, from everything I've read so far, it does not matter software version. As the Hack Kit and Bubby's OneClick both get root to the device in both cases of pre or post HSUPA-update. There are pre and post HSUPA-update radios, so that's no problem. If you see 1.84.502.11 under software version, by going to settings, about phone, and then clicking software information, then you have a phone that has received the OTA HSUPA-update. If you see a slight difference in the version number then what I have listed, then it does not have that update installed.

Well, have you owned an inspire before?
Why not at least test out the phone while it's stock (assuming it is), for a few days, at the very least?
That way you can test it out to make sure everything works correctly, and get a feel for the behavior of the phone "normally."
That way once you start flashing roms and something goofy starts happening (trust me, it will), you'll have a reference point.
I was trying to root my gf's phone then found out it don't work on 2.3.3! Is anyone working on a perm root for 2.3.3? The temp root don't help me out because she is wanting to flash different roms on the phone.
Is there anyway to get the phone back to 2.2 so I can perm root it?

Thanks but I have googled it and everything it pulled up was already looked at by me so it's not that I haven't searched. Just haven't heard of anyone making any leaps towards perm root. The fre3vo temp root don't help me much.
I found this guide.... http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Evo_Shift_4G:_Full_Update_Guide I'm guessing it isn't for the 2.3.3 OTA updated Evo Shift 4G or is it?

My g/f got me a Motorola Photon and I rooted getting it ready for when more development comes as way of roms. She had 2.2 on hers and I asked when she updated it and she said she didn't. She got her phone last December so she had to update it to 2.3.3 right?
Anyways I heard sprint can rollback to 2.2 but they usually won't because they don't want people going back so they can root their phones.
I have a friend at Radioshack, do authorized retailers have the ability to rollback to 2.2?

I Highly doubt ANYONE will get a perm root for 2.3.3 for sometime.... its already been out what a couple of weeks now. so im updating my phone because this gingerbread update is bugged like crazy... constant crashes after leaving every app. not receiving any calls or txts half the time, and WIFI is broken.

i know. but im going INSANE!!!! after ever damn app i close the white screen with the green HTC comes up for like 1 min. then the loading of the home screen. i see the damn thing at least 200 times a day. im already looking towards a new phone all together... dealing with that for a few weeks gets irritating extremely fast.
It is really annoying. I am just going to wait for root, put CM7 on it, and give it to my Mom or something...
I hate to see the root issue keep getting sugar coated by people that already have root, including me. Just to be brutally honest, its been 2 and a half months since the Shift was updated and I really haven't seen much evidence of any one working on root. I do remember one tweet from about month ago mentioning the Shift but beyond that its been pretty quiet. I'm not saying its never going to happen, and for all I know someone is working diligently behind the scenes, all I'm saying is don't get too high of hopes that its going to happen soon..... Hopefully I'm wrong though.
If people were paying for this I would see more of a reason for people to ask all the time. I know I am new to these forums but even I get annoyed with it. I want my Shift rooted just as much as the next guy. It's free, get over it.
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA Premium App
Im sure people would pay for it. People have offered to donate phones and such plus once a device is rooted developers can create root only apps.
Most of the devs do it for the challenge tho... Not everything is about money. That said im sure anyone that came out with a perm root would get donations for doing so.
