[A] [SM-P900] HOWTO: Full Backup without Root and Easiest way to get Root - Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Disclaimer: Not responsible for what you do with this information.
Important Note: So far (April 2015), no one has been able to root or flash non-stock recovery on SM-P900 without tripping KNOX. For all we know, KNOX is useless to us, but nonetheless use the SuperSU app to disable KNOX after you are able to get root. No need to disable KNOX if you don't root.
I tried to get root on my SM-P900 but for some reason I couldn't get TWRP recovery to stick (always reverted to stock recovery) and also had corrupted display after flashing Chainfire autoroot using ODIN (Odin was stuck on flashing cache.img). My summary here should help anyone else to quickly what they need without digging through different threads. FYI-- these steps work on latest Samsung OTA with Kitkat 4.4.2
Tools required (for full backup or to get root):
Windows 7 PC (or Virtual Box VM https://www.modern.ie/en-us/virtualization-tools#downloads -- did not test using a VM)
Samsung USB Drivers for Note Pro 12.2
Odin3 (v3.09, not 3.07 or 3.10.x)-- Only get this from xda-developers forums, not from any third party website http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2409624&d=1385179473 -
P900XXUANB3-RecoveryImg.tar -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2591013&d=1392923580
twrp-2.8.6.0-v1awifi.img.tar (or just latest twrp for P900 .img.tar image)
Two things to be aware of:
To Boot Tablet in Odin mode press and hold: (Vol Down + Menu + Power)
To Boot Tablet to Recovery press and hold: (Vol Up + Menu + Power) release after seeing Samsung logo for the second time
1. Compleletly remove Samsung Kies from your PC
2. Install latest Samsung USB drivers for Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 (just google and get it from the official Samsung Website)
3. Keep USB cable disconnected from PC, Boot into Odin Download Mode on the tablet
- Make sure to accept the warning by pushing Vol up
- Odin Mode should say:
Current Binary: Samsung (or Official)
System Status: Samsung (or Official)
Knox Warranty Void: 0
4. Start Odin on the Windows PC as Administrator (not sure if Admin rights are necessary but just do it)
5. Load the P900XXUANB3-RecoveryImg.tar image into "AP" (or "PDA" if you are using an earlier Odin3 version!!!). Also remove "Auto Reboot" option and keep "F. Reset Time" enabled
6. Connect the Tablet. Odin should say ""<ID:0/00#> Added!! -- this means USB connection established
7. Flash the Recovery Image by hitting "Start". Should take maybe 5-10 seconds.
8. Next load the twrp .img.tar file in to "AP". Flash that by hitting "Start". Should take maybe 10 seconds.
9. Power tablet off. Disconnect USB.
10. Plug in an external microSD card (if you want to backup). Boot in to recovery (Vol up + Menu + Power).
If you do a full boot, you will lose recovery. If you flash CF Auto Root .tar.md5 image you will get corrupted display then you wont be able to boot unless you flash the P900XXUANB3-RecoveryImg.tar image.
11. Once in TWRP recovery, you should do a backup and select the destination the external microSD card.
12. Then go to reboot, select system, and then swipe right if you want to root.
13. Boot up normally, then download SuperSU app from Google Play Store
14. Run SuperSU, it will say binary needs to be updated. Hit OK, then hit TWRP/CWM Recovery. Device will reboot in to TWRP, run a script then will say "FAILED" and reboot automatically.
15. Boot up normally, you now have root. Open SuperSU app, it will say seems that you have KNOX, do you want to disable it? Say yes.
People on this forum said that if Root is acquired and KNOX is not disabled, they suffered from random soft-reboots.
Download Adaway APK and install it. Once installed run the app an it will ask for root privileges. Now you're golden.
Troubleshooting:
If you tried to flash and TWRP doesn't stick check your status by going in to Odin Mode if the tablet still says:
Current Binary: Samsung (or Official)
System Status: Samsung (or Official)
Knox Warranty Void: 0
Then nothing changed from stock settings.
If it says:
Current Binary: Samsung (or Official)
System Status: Custom
Knox Warranty Void: 1
Then you probably have TWRP installed but didn't try booting in to it.
If it says:
Current Binary: Custom
System Status: Custom
Knox Warranty Void: 1
Then you probably have TWRP installed and also root (if you swiped right).
Where to go from here?
You can stay rooted, or you can now use TWRP to flash another rom (CM12+ for example).

reserved.

Good Guide, thank you!, was about to write one anyways.
5 more things:
1.) On the Note Pro you don't need the home button! You can reach recovery by pressing Vol up + Power, let got of the Power and keep pressing Vol when you see the screen turn on (easier when device is unplugged from both PC and power)
2.) For those interested in using a VM to use with Odin: VirtualBox DOES NOT WORK! (tested with Win XP and Win7). The problem seems to be the virtual USB Controller to connect to Host USB devices. Odin won't detect connected devices.
Use VmWare instead! I used VMWare Fusion with Win 7 Enterprise and it worked like a charm. Seems to have better USB Host integration.
3.) Odin 3.10.6 worked fine for me (Odin 3.9 also works!)
4.)Suggestion:
If you want root, instead of downloading SuperSU from the Play store, place the TWRP SuperSU (at the moment SuperSU 2.46) on your SD card. When you boot into recovery, you can flash the SuperSU directly after making you initial backup.
No Errors, so installing Supersu twice, no problems
5. SUPERSU link is missing in the "things needed" list.
Feel free to add this information to the first post.

thanks for the tips.
using the method described above, SuperSU script is downloaded with the play store SuperSU app. So it guarantees you're using the latest version. plus you should use the SuperSU app to monitor which apps have been granted root privileges.
although i haven't tried Odin with Virtual Box, I've used fastboot and adb a few thousand times and it always worked for me. maybe its something specific happening here.

How to Root Note Edge (SM-N915T) with Marshmallow 6.0.1?

Hello,
XDA, would it be possible to look into rooting a Samsung Note Edge (SM-N915T) with Marshmallow 6.0.1. I've tried different things, but there doesn't seem to be a process for this phone with that OS.
Let me know.
Thanks,

you should flash via Odin for CWM and pull out battery method if notified FAIL, also cautioned about the SUPERSU must be 2.76 which patched the Samsung security updated, i was success rooted my Sprint 915P FW6.0.1 dueto this way
I rooted my phone following this procedure (the FY version of the Note Edge but should work for any other)
You need the following tools:
Samsung drivers:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/3d61st8zaxas4pt/SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_1_5_6_0.exe?dl=0
Odin 3:09:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ua0sqizz1m6558d/Odin3_v3.09.zip?dl=0
SuperSU 2.74:
https://download.chainfire.eu/964/SuperSU/BETA-SuperSU-v2.74-2-20160519174328.zip?retrieve_file=1
and CWM for the T version of the Note (from this thread):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...15s-n9150-cwm-based-recovery-6-0-5-1-t2954960
Move all files to a folder on the PC.
Copy the SuperSU your Cell (SD card int/ext).
Install the drivers for the phone.
Then go with the phone in the DL (download) mode.
Start Odin, connect the phone to the PC.
If Odin recognizes the cell phone continue.
Some side notes:
To get in DL (download) mode use key combination <VOL DOWN + HOME + POWER>.
To get in recovery mode use key combination <UP VOL + HOME + POWER>.
Press these buttons simultaneously.
You flash CWM in DL mode via Odin (in "AP" insert CWM) to the mobile phone.
It is important that you previously deactivate "Auto Reboot" in Odin.
When the flash process is finished, you just wait one minute after you have pressed the "Start", pull the cable from the phone and remove the battery.
Wait a couple seconds, and put the battery back inside.
Now, and this is important, you have to come directly into recovery mode.
If the phone starts normally into the system, CWM is overwritten with the standard recovery.
If you're in CWM, you go to "Install zip" and select the SuperSU to install.
ATTENTION: if CWM asks you to install root or SuperSU, answer with NO, else you get a bootloop!
Now you can Restart, normal into the system.
That's it already, if you're in the system, you install this app from Play Store:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummyapps.rootchecker
When you got root just update SuperSU and install busybox and you are good to go

Would this work with N915F International?
Thanks,
If we already have recovery do we still need to step backwards and install cwm, also do we just not let supersu update to 2.79 and leave it at 2.74 or 2.76?
I appear to only have partial root, none of the app's are [rompting me to grant or deny supersu.
Will this thing work is twrp latest recovery installed??

problems faced and solns found
1. During twrp flashing using odin, my stock recovery kept patching the twrp after reboots. So i couldn't install twrp succesfully. To fix this I unchecked "reboot" option in odin (thanks to another xda rooting guide)and switched off device manually after flashing. Then booted into recovery by pressing "home+vol up+power". this time stock rom was gone and twrp was there to welcome me.
2. i ended up in a bootloop after flashing the aforementioned superuser zip file. Instead i flashed BETA-SuperSU-v2.74-2-20160519174328.zip and fixed the bootloop.
Note- My device is Samsung Galaxy j200-G.

Nice Tutorials
Hey i m ramcharan thanks nice guide how to root samsung J200G

Chainfire root method

Hi, I've tried a few tutorials on this forum on how to root the Samsung Galaxy S7 G930f.
After flashing the chainfire autoroot file my device stays stuck on the Samsung logo I've waited over 1 hour for the device to boot but it does not.
My question is can anyone explain what I could be doing wrong my device is on stock nougat I did root successfully with magisk a couple of months back but was not happy with having to format my data.
I also prefer chainfire SuperSu. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
I also had the same problem. So, I did the old fashioned way.
1. Download TWRP.tar from here: https://dl.twrp.me/herolte/
2. Download the latest stable SuperSU zip. If you want the link: Here ya go
2. Instead of flashing the CFAutoroot file, open Odin, click on AP and select the TWRP that you downloaded.
3. Once it flashes successfully, power off the phone, then Press and hold Volume Up+Home+Power Button to get into the recovery.
4. Copy the SuperSU and flash it and Viola! You got SuperSU!
You probably knew steps 3,4 but I wrote them just in case
hi may I know if you reformat your data after step 4?

Well, yeah. I always start with a clean slate. Just a habit i picked up when i had a OnePlus One. You should be fine without a format though...Cause you're just rooting, not flashing a whole new ROM.
Thanks for helping me out, unfortunately after flashing twrp and booting into twrp recovery the default android recovery loads up.
I will continue searching for a method that does work. If you know anything else I could try please let me know.

That's weird, I just flashed stock firmware and TWRP a few mins ago and it worked fine for me. I hope you used the .tar and not the .img and the Odin that comes with CF Auto Root, not the one you use to flash the whole stock firmware.
I did use the .tar and have also tried with Odin that comes with cf autoroot.
Unfortunately I still get the same result flash of twrp is successful when I boot into recovery I get the android installing update with dead android then it just goes into to stock recovery.
I will try a few more times if no success I'll try with a fresh install of stock firmware.
Thanks for the help though appreciate it.
I decided to try again and succeeded but still had to format data to get the phone to boot. I made a full backup on my laptop before proceeding I did the following steps to successfully root.
I am in no way responsible for any lost data or bricked devices please note if you follow this tutorial you will trip knox and your warranty will be void.
1. MAKE A FULL BACKUP OF YOUR DEVICE CAN'T BE STRESSED ENOUGH

6. Download Samsung Antiroot Removal Kit
7. Transfer the files to your SM-G920F sd card
8. Power off your SM-G920F and enter download mode by holding the volume down + home button + power button read the warning press up to allow custom flashing.
9. Open Odin I used Odin v3.12.3 tap the AP button locate the custom recovery and flash it's done be ready to enter twrp recovery as the device will boot quickly, as soon as it powers off to reboot hold the volume up + home button + power button if timed correctly you shall enter twrp recovery.
10. Locate the SuperSU.zip install it but don't reboot

how did you backup your files on step 1 if your not rooted?
This is how I backed up my phone it's a bit tedious could have been done quicker.
First I removed my memory card from the phone. I then connected my phone in MTP mode to my laptop I dragged the folder of the files I needed to my laptop.
I then used MobileGo to export .apk files of the apps I wanted. I then exported the photos and videos I wanted to keep.
I did a WhatsApp backup copied the folder to my laptop.
I then made accounts on all games that I wanted to keep my progress on using Facebook and Google Play. Some games allows signing up with email address.
I used Mcbackup to backup all my contacts and e mailed them to myself.
I know that I could have used Google Drive or Samsung Cloud for some of the tasks but I prefer backing up this way.

I'm unable to start recovery mode. I pull out the battery and after pressing the keys the phone simply goes off. Also I'm unable to enter recovery mode anyway (after turning it off and not flashing anything). That's it, I can't enter stock recovery either.
I tried all button combinations and it just doesn't enter recovery mode.
Never mind, it was probably a faulty button. Pressing with force did the trick. I however employed a bit different path (or perhaps I wrote it down more detailed), which come out more noob like, I'll leave them here for anyone that might use them
Noob, baby steps to root the Samsung Galaxy J2 Prime SM-G532M:
1. Enable developer mode and selected OEM unlocking and USB debug, dunno if it's needed but I did it because in all roots I have seen this is a must.
2. Put the Magisk zip onto a SD card (currently Magisk-v18.0) and put the SD card into the phone. Then I turned off the phone.
3. Turn on the phone into download mode (power+vold-down+home), connect the phone to the PC.
4. Open ODIN and FLASH TWRP file using the AP button (VERY IMPORTANT, uncheck the auto reboot in options, otherwise the recovery goes back to stock I think and the phone will boot into the regular OS, and you'll have to flash TWRP again), wait a few seconds to the flash to finish (odin says PASS! in green).
5. From this screen without touching anything reboot the phone into recovery mode (power+vol-up+home) (just in case press hard the vol+ key). If it boots the phone in regular mode, do steps 2 , 3 and 4 again.
6. FLASH MAGISK.zip from the microSD. When finished wipe Delvik/Cache.
7. Reboot the system. Open the Magisk app (you might have to wait a few seconds for it to appear among on the apps) then press yes when prompted to finish installation as many times (2 times I think). And done, you have your phone rooted.
PD: Magisk can be found here: https://github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk/releases/

No bootloader access?

Hi there!
This is my first Samsung phone that I attempted to root. It's a Sprint Note 5 with *3DRH1 firmware, and it refuses to drop-down to bootloader level. Trying with either adb, or Vol+,Home,Power key press combination, or selecting "reboot to bootloader" from recovery ends up booting right back into system. I've read one mention about Sprint preventing such access, but is there a way around this?
That's one problem. The other is inability to flush (with Odin) the TWRP recovery, even though Odin reports success. After that, booting to recovery first displays "Installing system software" on a blue background, then a warning "No command", and only then ends up on native recovery.
The one thing I was successful in was to boot into Download mode, and I guess this would allow me to flush other original firmware. Is that right? What older firmware would allow me to root this phone? Is that the route to take, or is there magic trick/key press combination that can invoke the bootloader mode? Thanks for any pointers.
Note 5 doesnt have a bootloader
If you want to root or use any custom roms, you need TWRP,
Steps to root:-
1) Download the latest version of twrp for your device from TWRP's website
2) place it in AP in Odin
3) Close your phone then press Volume Down, Home Button, Power button simultaneously to boot to Odin/Download Mode
4) connect to your PC and flash twrp
5) Download Magisk v23 from Magisk's github.
6) use an OTG or place it on your phone's sdcard.
7) Install it from TWRP
The reason i said v23 instead of v24 is because Magisk Hide is off as default for v24, so, better to install v23 then update magisk later from its app.
