I bought an OEM magnetic charging cable. I am mostly using it at work, connected to my laptop. Lately I tried to use it connected to the wallcharger adapter capable of 1500mAh.
I used to think that the magnetic charger was charging faster., however I noticed that my Amami is getting charged faster with a USB->microUSB cable by use of the wall charger.
Is that normal?
or
Does my magnetic charging cable not working properly?
Hi!
Wireless chargers are always slower than just charging over USB just cause of the way they work, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

i also noticed differences in charging times using magnetic dock. it usually takes longer time to charge when it's peak load in your block/neighborhood. i would use a quick charger with the magnetic cable to improve charging time. or use a 2000mAh charger. avoid using the usb port to charge your amami. the rubber gasket used to protect and keep the port waterproof will wear out faster.

Yes thats why I bought the magnetic charger (to avoid the rubber to be deformed).
Do you think using a 2000 mAh charger will be safe? I doubt to use chargers over the original wall charger's capacity 1500 mAh.

yes. the soc should be able to handle 2000mah as it supports quick charge 2.0.
Yes I am now charging it with a 2000mAh charger connected to the magnetic charging cable and it is faster than before, actually much more faster. :good: Thank you !

It's called "Gilsey Magnetic USB Charging Cable", very cheap, very useful. Got two of them and they're in permanent use for a year now. No probs.

Hello,
I was wondering, can I use the old charging cables from an LG Optimus Black and Samsung Galaxy S2 to charge the Nexus 5?
I also have a car USB adapter and a spare USB-to-microUSB cable.
Can I use all sort of plugs/cables that match the connector size, or should I pay attention to any details regarding current/voltage?
I noticed the original PS for the Nexus 5 supplies more power than all others I have, but that may just mean that it would charge slower, which to me is not an issue.
I not only want to avoid doing any damage, but also of course shorten the battery life!!
Thanks

Any Micro USB cable will work with the phone and you shouldn't have a problem with voltage or anything like that dont worry bro
I notice nexus 5 is very picky on your USB cable if u want a fast charge. So of notice it going pretty slow. Try another cable
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Any USB charger should be 5V. You could in theory get a cheap charger that is off by some amount, but even then it would have to be significantly higher (5.5V+) to cause damage.
Current just affects the charging speed. A 0.5A charger is just going to charge your phone slowly. Your phone won't draw more than 1.2A though, so a 2A charger would be fine.
I was wondering about the USB cable as well, if I recall correctly, didn't the Nexus 4 had one less pin in the micro usb cable and Google only recommended using their USB cables?
I have a tone of Samsung micro USB cables from my numerous E4GT that I went through. I also noticed that the N5 charger brick says 1.2 on it so it's not your standard 1 amp charging brick.

Unfortunately the N5 seems to report most chargers as USB Mode chargers rather than AC Mode. I've noticed this with my Battery Packs, multiple car chargers, as well as multiple home chargers that are cheap. The N4 reports them all as AC chargers, but the N5 reports them as USB Chargers

Silly question, but how do you tell the difference on your N5 from USB charge vs AC charge?
Not a silly question at all. Go into settings and check "Battery" when you get in there, It shows you xx% Charging ("Whatever you are charging through")

Goto Settings -> About -> Status -> Battery Status: Charging (USB) / AC
I've not used the bundled charger, just re-using my old one that is an AC Adapter with a USB cable. I'll check tonight to see if it's charging in USB or AC after all.
I found this one, but I am not sure I want to drop $25 on a charger (call me cheap)

The QC 2.0 spec can use higher than 5v and as much as 3A.
Several 2a and 3a chargers on ebay and amazon for less than $15. Works fine when I use a generic 3a charger since the phone will scale power on need and availability.
I ended up buying the original charger linked in my first post. Will report back.
Isn't the quick charging a factor of voltage as well as amperage? Simply buying a 2am charger won't get you the built in quick charging if you don't have the voltage to back it up..

You are correct.
Ok I got the charger. While I have installed it, I haven't had time to test it fully.
When connected, it does display the Adaptive Charger Connected message.
How it differs from the Samsung home charger, it adds 12V to the mix
Charging at 5V is 10W, 9V is 14.4W, and 12V is 14.4W. (As is labeled. I haven't measured)

Depends on scale. It's more about the supply at the end really. From a car charger your converting 12v (supply limit amp) to 5v 5a or 12v 2a easy. Since its DC to DC stepping is fairly straight forward. The phone will never hit the amp limit in a car. Unless you drive a soap box. Smart chargers are like having mutiple chargers in the same device. It detects what's being asked and delivering accordingly. Much like pressing your thumb on a water hose and watching the water shoot out further.
As a side note just to be sure anyone isn't thinking about upping the voltage on a charger DONT. It doesn't work that way lol. Do a quick Google search on voltage conversion and you will understand how electrical supply can change.
The Powermod charger charges my phone in the car at least as fast as the OEM Samsung charger.... Highly recommended.
not all usb cable are the same !
not all usb cable will shows "adaptive fast charger connected" when connected to phone.
i have bought IXCC microusb cable 5 packs from Amazon,
i tested all 5 microusb cable, it DOES show "adaptive fast charger conncted" when connected.
5 packs = 9.99$
3 packs = 7.99$.

It's plugged into a 12v hub that I hardwired to the car's electrical system. I hid the hub behind the dash and then ran the charging cable up through the middle of my dash panels. It is perfectly positioned and comes out of the dash directly where my phone mount is located. I had to disassemble my dash to do it. Wasn't a big deal for me, as I already had my dash apart to flush mount my Nexus 7 as a "detachable" head unit for my sound system.
Does this do Fast Charge like the ac outlet ?
Thanks

That one isn't a QuickCharge 2.0 charger and is likely not as fast.
Hi,
I have a Z3 and was wondering if I can connect my magnetic charging dock to a Quick Charge 2.0 charger? Will it work as a normal charge, quick charge, not charge at all or burn out my phone?
No it is not it will charge as a regular charger because the phone is not giving the permission to the charger to give more energy. Quick charge it uses all 4 wires within the cable to communicate with the phone and magnetic charge is using only two, so it can't communicate with the phone, other than just giving it charge .

QC2.0 will work with normal usb cable, and DK48 dock. Unfortunately it doesn't work on standard magnetic charger like magnector and etc.
Just got my 1+6 and I love it. Just thought I'd share that the 1+ power adapter doesn't work with other usb C cables for fast charge. It'll charge at regular speed but not fast. I have an OTG cable from Amazon that will not work at all. Make sure to buy OEM accessories

Did you put OTG mode on via advanced settings? It will go off automatically after 10 min inactivity. And yes, Dash charging needs original dash charger AND dash cable (or whatever it's called, the red Oneplus cable).
I have cheap chinese OTG-adapter and it works just fine, after enabling OTG mode every time when using.

Those cables support an higher amperage current passing through and I also think they also have 1 or 2 more contacts in the type-c connector and larger ones in the type a usb

For my nexus6 I have fast charger which kicks up charging up to 9V - 1A.
This charger does not work with oneplus6 and charging only at 5V - 1A.
Also, nexus6 does not fast charging with oneplus charger and charging at 5V - 1A.
I am highly disappointed that we do not have standard for fast charging.
I use magnetic adapter and it's incredible convenient to use and I am not going to go back. And now I have to leave with retarded decision from Oneplus who cannot deliver normal fast charging from any chargers which able to deliver over 1A !!
Shame on you Oneplus !!
You need the cable provided with the phone to dash charge, because of the high current output while charging. Standard cables are rated to handle maximum 2amps, while OP uses 4amps.
Edit: VOOC and rapid charging cables have a special 5th pin used for verification
~Disregard below statement ~
Any cable will work as long as it is rated for 4A. The power brick has to be a dash or VOOC charger.

No it won't. How does the charger know the cable is rated at 4 amps?
There is stuff in both charger and cable and both must be present for dash charging to work

I didn't realize there is a 5th pin used as verification. Ideally the power brick and/or phone can detect the resistance of the cable but that's not the case here. Luckily most 4A cables I've found are VOOC or rapid charging compatible.
If someone needs a longer cable:
you can actually use a 3.0 USB extension cable as long as it is rated for more power.
some guys at the op community tested a few cables and confirmed this one working:

Just upgraded the misses from a OP 1 to an OP 6.
Until now we had also been using magnetic usb cables that are soooooo convenient.
My Nexus6 and her OP 1 charge at 1amp with them according to Ampere and were android auto recognized by our cars...
With them the OP6 only charges at 320mA and is not android auto recognized by our cars...
I'm looking for a magnetic usb cable upgrade so OP 6 works as I expect it to... I don't care about quick charging (have never needed it as battery is never empty when i set the phone to charge at night). I care about magnetic uber convenience and android auto recognition in the car.

Hi.
Is there any notice of heat build up when wireless charging ? I got an otterbox defender case so its a little thick/ insulating.
I looked at the Samsung wireless charger and it has a builtin cooling fan....So if the mfgr wireless charger has a cooling fan, is the heat buildup a problem? A problem source?
BTW, it is a yootech 10w wireless charger and the phone says it charges faster through the wireless charger than it does through the USB cord powering the wireless charger.
THANKS !
i've been using a Pleson 'fast' wireless charger for years with my GS8+ and now with my GS21+ and while there can be times when the phone is warm to the touch i've never had a problem. I have a Quad Lock case on the device which is a pretty thick back. FWIW I also use the charger on my work-assigned GS20FE w/o issue.
I've put a Vanguard rubber case on my phone. and I'm using Samsung Wireless Charging Powerbank for wireless charging. Yes, the phone warm up while charging. It is a20 watt charger and so far, the only charger that shows "Fast Charging" while charging wirelessly. For wired charging, the fastest charger I've used so far is the 65 Watt Lenovo Laptop charger that comes with my Yoga Laptop. 0 to 50 in just 45 mins. But I got the 2nd fastest charger from a totally unexpected place. It is from IKEA. Yes, IKEA also now making fast chargers. I've bought a 23 watt USB-C + USB-A dual charger with PD 3.0 and it charges pretty fast. at least 1% per minute.
Alright thanks. I havent noticed any warming when using a wired charger...of course it isnt the the new super fast charging plug.

Wireless adds unnecessary heat and right where you least want it, inside the phone.
If you increase the gap (a case) between coils it may create more waste heat than a coupling that is closer. Air core transformers aren't very efficient.
I never use wireless but do use fast charging.
