No luck flashing ROMS with recovery - Xperia Z3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm trying to update to either official LP or AOSP lollipop, but trying to flash a zip with recovery just ends in errors with all the zips I've tried to flash with both clockwork and Phil Whi Touch, some zip files fail because of bad footer, some actually say "installed sucessfully" and then just reboot in to my old 4.4.4 setup.
Is this due to a locked bootloader?
I actually can flash ROMS using Sony Mobile Flasher but I've only found the 4.4.4 stock D6603_23.0.A.2.93_Generic GLOBAL.ftf file and not a LP version.
Any Ideas where to go from here?

wow,
OK, official lollipop does not need an unlocked bootloader but AOSP does.
Also, the official flashtool from Sony (Often called EMMA and downloaded from Sony) DEFINATELY needs an unlocked bootloader, it will not work without one.
Only the unofficial flashtool (From flashtool.net) will work to flash FTF files on both locked and unlocked bootloader.
Please provide the actual setup of your phone and show the outputs of recovery or flashtool once you try to flash

dont even try flashing any custom ROMs, youre going to end up bricking your device.

Wtf?. Please do not spread confusion here. Base your posts on facts.

Talk about scaring the users away from custom ROM's

I meant flashing custom roms (aosp: cm roms) on a locked bootloader lol.. My bad

So i have successfully rooted my droid razr m and unlocked the bootloader. i tried using safestrap to avail, i it didnt work at all. Then i tried clock work recovery flashed through with adb. It got flashed successfully. Then tried to get recovery open didnt work. I wanted to know if the unlocked bootloader message is the cause of both programs not working. or can you guys give me maybe better instructions to start flashing roms on phone on a rooted and unlocked bootloader. THANK YOU. I wanna put a rom on my device so my phones themes look cool.
I am also on 4.4.2 stock. and how do i get rid of the unlocked bootloader message.

you don't need ss any more with an unlocked bl, although it should still work. however, the version you tried probably isnt compatible with kk.
as for cwm and twrp, make sure you have the correct version for kk, and after you install it you want to boot directly into it. do not let the phone boot the os the first time or it will wipe the recovery back to the stock one. also you should grab the su flashable zip and flash that when your in recovery the first time, so you have a properly working root.
after all that you can put a rom on your phone and flash it, but make sure you get one that is on kk base or it will just bootloop.
there is a method to remove the ul bl warning, check you forums general section for the post. i know there is one in the maxx/hd forum, but i don't know if they are cross compatible.

[Q][HELP] Getting Moto G back to stock

So here I am worrying about bricking my device if I go back to stock.
Here is some insight-
I have an unlocked XT1032 US retail moto g running Cyanogenmod 11 m4 snapshot. I am also running clockworkmod recovery and everything is working fine. I have heard of many people bricking their devices when they try and flash stock because the version doesnt match up with the bootloader version or something like that. My bootloader version is reported to be 4111.5 (The bootloader menu version is 41.11) from the "fastboot getvar all". So if I want to flash stock firmware what version do I need to choose. (can someone give me a link to the download?) Also is there any easier way to do this, perhaps can someone give me a clockworkmod backup of stock firmware and i can flash it via restore in the recovery. Also is there a way to get .img files of my whole phone via the dd command on the superuser shell. (Someone please give me a list of those commands to make a full image of my phone) so I can restore incase something goes wrong.
So pretty much all in all can someone please give me a link to the correct stock firmware for my phone that I can flash with NO issues and a list of commands that I can use to flash.
And just wondering what is mfastboot and how is it different from fastboot.
I should have made a backup with cwm recovery before I installed cm11 but I forgot which is why I made this thread. ALL HELP IS APPRECIATED! THANKS!
hey try downloading stock firmware from this link http://sbf.droid-developers.org/download.php?device=14&file=786
then follow instruction from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2542219
if you failed once don't panic... just try another firmware from here http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=14
just make sure you choose firmware which is for retail US and also choose right version of android... but first try the firmware i have mentioned above...

Q30: i encounter '(bootloader) Preflash validation failed' error message when flashing Firmware Image
You may have updated to Android 4.4.4 via firmware image or OTA update. In this case you now also have the latest version of the Bootloader. That is why you get the above output when attempting to flash a 4.4.2 firmware image. ==> simply flash 4.4.4 images instead.
If the error still occurs, even with a 4.4.4 firmware image, then unlocking bootloader will be necessary.

There is no 4.4.4 Retail US yet. You can flash 4.4.4 Retail EU just fine. Recovery flashable zip here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g/development/rom-stock-motorola-rom-collection-t2854688
I have the retail us version though. She. Will the retail us 4.4.4 be available? And one important question when I do go back to stock 4.4.4 with the link you gave me via recovery, will my custom recovery get overwritten with the stock one?
XT1032 is a Global GSM model. you can flash an XT1032 ROM from anywhere in the world and it will work.
It's currently unknown when 4.4.4 US Retail will be available, but I do not think it will take too much longer.
Those zip files only include ROM and Kernel. Recovery will not be changed.
I'll be trying that tomorrow and I'll let you know if it works or not asap. But for now thanks!
You might also need to flash the 4.4.4 EU Retail radio zip available here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2649763
I read somewhere that when you flash stock ROM even though the recovery is not being changed, the stock ROM will overwrite the custom recovery in start up.
Is this true?

Please help my phone is stuck in CWM recovery during the flash and I think the recovery is frozen. Can I hard reboot back to recovery or is my phone totaled? :crying:
This worked for me - http://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...-gpe-4-4-4-t2824377/post55768571#post55768571. Once back to 'base' you can update to 4.4.4 OTA or flash another ROM. And if you get stuck again, re-run this process. Three downloads, a few scripts to run; double-click easy.
Good luck.
Back at stock, just had to give CWM 10mins! Thanks everyone!

Resurrecting an old S3 - need guidance

I'm gave my daughter my old S3 for Christmas and I want to get it up to date.
It's running a Clean 4.1.2 ROM from back in the day. TWRP is like on v 1.x (I kid you not). I think the bootloader is unlocked because there is no Safestrap. It goes right into TWRP, no "slots".
I want to get her up to 4.3 at least, 4.4 hopefully. I tried to download on of the new ROMs but TWRP didn't even see it so I'm suspecting I need to upgrade TWRP first?
anywho...looking for a path to the latest ROMS...would rather not lockup the bootloader unless someone can make a good case for it.
Thank you very much in advance.
God Bless,
Matt

Yes you need to update twrp to the latest version. And your bootloader almost has to be unlocked because if it wasn't you would not be able to install a custom recovery.
I would go with a custom rom, stay away from bootloader locked roms. There's nothing special about the new TW 4.4.2 rom other than it locks the bootloader down tight, as far as roms that's your own choice but I'd do some reading before I did anything
From my S3 running BlissStalk
You can grab the latest twrp here http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/d2vzw
Both .tar and .img files, the .tar requires Odin and you can install the .img through an app called flashify (requires root), its in the play store. After that read some of the ROM threads. You might want to also update your firmware and baseband. Most of the ROM threads will recommend this and give you links to proper firmware, making sure not to lock the bootloader.
Good luck

[Q] Help upgrading to KKBL. OTA or Flash?

Hi,
It's been years that I've been living with the XT925 on CM11 JBBL and as I've been following latest developments on CM 12.1 and want to give it a try.
I've been searching for the past week on how to safely perform the bootloader upgrade so I can flash CM12.1. As it turns out there is a lot of disperse information on how to do it, followed by scary cases of soft bricked devices.
Current device status:
- Bootloader Unlocked
- Rooted
- CM11 M12 JBBL
- Everything works fine
What I already know:
- I have to Unroot my device
- Need to flash stock 4.1.2
- Must check if everything works once in stock
What I need help:
- Should I download OTA via the stock firmware?
- Should I flash stock recovery?
- Should I perform the update from the device or should I extract the OTA and change something and then flash it manualy?
- Is there any tutorial that I should've found on my searches?
On a sidenote: is there any chance of my bootloader to be relocked and/or loose any chance of future root access due to the OTA?
I believe that as people realise that CM12.1 is stable some noob friendly thread to the ancient JBBL's out there would be much apreciated.
Thanks in advance!
If I were you, I would just flash straight to KK with RSD or House of Moto. If you go this route, you won't need to flash back or reinstall stock recovery. Flashing the FXZ will reinstall stock recovery, but if you use House of Moto you can use an option to flash aftermarket recovery. Flashing shouldn't relock your boot loader, either.

In order to flash straight to KK I need to obtain it via OTA download while in Stock JB.
I haven't found any KK image laying arround, so this might be the only route.
Any other advices will be much apreciated RikRong.
Can you find the firmware on MotoFirmware.com, when it's actually up?

Custom Recovery for SM-G900V running Lollipop 5.0 latest release (OK3)

Hi to All!: I'm new to this forum and you may consider me a newbie, willing to learn from you and share my experiences in the near future. Just recently I managed to root my Samsung Galaxy S5 SM-G900V running Lollipop latest release (OK3) following this tutorial (thanks a lot to jrkruse for that!!). Now I'm trying to install a Custom Recovery, I tried Safestrap (Safestrap-KLTEVZW-NCG-3.75-B03.apk), ClockworkMod (philz_touch_6.41.6-klte.tar) and TWRP (twrp-2.8.7.0-klte, tar & img versions) and this is what happened:
----Safestrap App installed successfully but failed to install Recovery.
----ClockworkMod (Philz Touch variant) failed to flash with Odin.
----TWRP succeeded to install via ADB shell, replaced Stock Recovery but gave this error:
''RECOVERY BOOTING...
RECOVERY IS NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING''
I ended flashing Stock OK3 to have at least Stock Recovery again!, it's known OE1, OG5 and OK3 updates prevent downgrading, I want to downgrade to 4.4.4 to solve some wi-fi issues I've been having since Lollipop updates.
Some help about this subject will be very appreciated!!
Thanks a lot in advance to all members of this awesome forum!!

On OK3 the bootloader is locked. You cannot downgrade to 4.4.2 or 4.4.4 or any other previous version. You also cannot install custom recoveries like ClockworkMod or TWRP. You are relegated to Safestrap or FlashFire as discussed in jrkruse's threads.
You can ONLY use SafeStrap. TWRP and Clockworkmod cannot load because we have a locked bootloader.
You must flash a kitkat kernel to boot into safestrap, which I gather you didn't do. Then when you're done in Safestrap, flash a safestrap-flashable lollipop kernel BEFORE EXITING SAFESTRAP to boot back into your ROM.
@ landshark68
 @painiac
Thank both for your replies!, let's see if I misunderstood something: flashing NI2 Stock Kernel with Odin will give the possibility to boot into Safestrap and flash zip of Stock NI2 ROM (4.4.4) or will I remain tied to OK3 even if I flash the KitKat Kernel?

@cd2xtac
I'm just curious about the whole flashing a custom recovery part you were talking about..
It let you flash one?
Normally I'd just shrug a thread like this off but when you said you tried to boot into recovery and saw
Code:
RECOVERY BOOTING...
RECOVERY IS NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING
that means it actually let you flash a custom recovery.
So my real questions here are, in download mode, does it say Knox 0x1?
And/or after you tried to boot into twrp, did it say "set warranty bit: recovery"?
This part makes me curious because on a locked bootloader, we shouldn't be able to flash a custom recovery.
Or maybe we can and just can't boot into it.
I haven't looked into this much because I've always just accepted that a locked bootloader means we need to use SS or FF and can't flash custom ROMs like CM.
Although I am curious what makes Samsung phones different than my old Droid Bionic. It has a locked bootloader and can only use Safestrap but it can still flash CM13 in a non-stock ROM slot. Why can'take we?
Perhaps I should call someone like @jrkruse in to see if he can clarify or if he knows why.

Because on other phones they had ways to trick the phone into letting a custom kernel be flashed. These ways dont work on S5. Also Rom slots dont work on our phone either unless you go back to kitkat, but you were still booting off of main kernel,so still no go
