[Q] moving from galaxy nexus to the s6 - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Hopefully getting my s6 tomorrow, but have a few questions:
1 I'm moving from the galaxy nexus, so I've become accustomed to the stock format. How is touch wiz? Ie is it a significant difference from the stock android experience?
2 I'd normally root the phone asap for backing up and flashing custom ROMs. Though I've heard rooting will trip KNOX, and currently there no way to restore KNOX status. As I'm concerned the phone may have issues with the screen (heard about discolouration etc), are Samsung likely to reject a phone when KNOX has been tripped?
3 as I haven't upgraded in quite some time, will the s6 automatically download my app and personal data when I log into google? If not, what's the easiest way to transfer the data without rooting?
Thanks!

Just install Google Launcher and you will feel right at home. Another thing is you will be extremely happy with the battery life compared to the gnexus. And yes google will automatically install all your apps once you setup your phone.

I came from a Nexus 5 so we are on the same boat.
1. The first thing I did after getting my s6 is to install Nova launcher because I feel touchwiz a little bit slow. Or if you prefer, you can download Google launcher if you prefer a stock feelling like @kojaraty said.
2. For the screen issue, I have no problem in this department.
3.Normally, your contacts, apps and pictures(if you did a sync with your gmail) should transfer automatically in your phone
3.

I'm also thinking of upgrading to the s6. Thank you mavers for creating this topic.

I am coming from N6 and earlier had a S3, I am a pure android lover and I hated touchwiz. I flashed my s3 the very day I got it.. Never used touchwiz.. The touchwiz on s6 is a different deal.. It is bad ass. Its minimal and isn't laggy.. Install apex launcher.. Customize icons and you are good to go. Rooting isnt a big deal.. Knox can be removed with custom stock roms.. I am not even feeling the need to root right now.. Its that awesome.

Coming from a GNEX, every other cell phone screen is an improvement. That phone had the worst screen of any phone I've owned in the past 10 years!
Anyway the S6 has a beautiful screen.

Overloaded RAM

Hey guys, I would really appreciate some help with this. My phone is often extremely laggy, to the point that when it's asleep and I get a phone call, it wouldn't wake up for me to be able to answer it (even though I can hear it ringing) until the person calling hangs up. I know TW is famous for being slow but this is just ridiculous. The only thing I have running in the background with the exception of normal TW stuff is the DS Battery Saver module (only set to control wifi/Data, not killing apps) and yet often I can see that the phone is using more than 2.2GB of RAM (after I've killed everything in the task manager). How can this be? Surely the system itself doesn't need THAT much RAM? I shudder to think what phones with a smaller RAM are like.
I'm running the Thunderbolt ROM (basically just deodexed stock 5.0.1) with Xposed and the "Fix Lollipop Memory Leak" module. Is there anything else I can do? I love the design of this phone but I am close to getting rid of it and going back to Sony which was always smooth as silk. I would prefer to stick to the Note though since I love the design and extra functionalities but what use are them if I have enough time to make a cup of coffee every time I try to do something?
It must be your Rom. I used to love to installed custom rom on my S1 and S2. But at the end of the day, custom roms are all buggy.

I would agree with you but if anything, it was worse when I was on stock which is why I decided to try a custom rom (and I tried many buggy ones before settling on this). I'm not someone who spend my time flashing various roms just to experiment, it's usually because I find the performance or features lacking.
Have you tried to wipe everything and odin back to stock? Im on stock, unroot, and I dont have any issues yet.

Same. I just don't even bother with Custom ROMs except if it gives more battery life. KNowing how hard Samsung has worked to make customization harder, I haven't bothered with custom ROMs for my edge.
Also I too have high RAM usage always but it doesn't make my phone any slower or laggier than past Bloatwiz phones. I am on 4.4.4 stock with a bunch of T Mobile stuff disabled.

Yeah I wonder if I should revert back to KitKat. My phone was great when I first got it, even when I had a whole heap of stuff installed. But maybe I'll wait for 5.1.1 first and see if that helps (the 915G still hadn't received 5.1.1 yet).

From what I have seen, you can no longer downgrade Android once you update to 5.1.1
Suffice it to say I will see if there is a way to stop my phone from auto updating itself. Kit Kat is working well for me and it retains all the native Edge features that made the Edge different.
I was able to get 6.5 hours screen time with my phone with location turned off and a full day of note taking, facebook, and music

6.5 hours?!? Holy crap, did you play any games at all? I usually last only around 3 hours but that's because I do play quite a lot of games. Anyway, I'm downgrading to 4.4.4 now, hopefully it'll stop acting up.

No. Not really. Like I said, I One Noted all day with my S pen, music, facebook alot and Chrome. I managed battery by using power saving mode, turning off location and turning off sync and turning it on every hour for about 5 minutes to get my emails in.
Today I did gaming and art on my Edge and got about 4 hours

So I've been back on stock 4.4.4 for a few days now. It is simply fantastic! The difference is huge! No problems what so ever now. I would like to stay on this for the life of my phone but I am a little concerned about the lack of security updates (such as Stagefright). What are your thoughts on this?
BTW, I noticed that Android system and kernel often takes up the majority of my battery percentage. Each by between 9-16%. Do you get this as well?

Yep, thats normal
And don't worry, i got the stagefright update on 4.4.4 and I was on MetroPCS lol. MetroPCS rides on T Mobile, but its just goes to illustrate that you have nothing to worry about. Glad you are enjoying your Note Edge again. Its a shame Samsung forgot they released this beast of a phone. Imagine this thing with the Note 5's but Edged version of the new TW. Nah, makes too much sense for consumers. Doesn't make sense if you are trying to get people to buy new phones.
Anyways just make sure you never upgrade to 5.1.1 That thing is a point of no return

I can't even begin to describe how happy I am with my phone right now. I remember a couple of months after I first got it, a friend of mine was watching me use it and commented on how snappy it was. Then more recently, not only did the sluggishness drive me crazy, I was watching others with envy, especially my girlfriend who is rocking my old Z1 Compact which still performs like a little rocket. Anyway, I am now back to loving the Note Edge again. I even prefer it over the new Notes, looks and all.
I just want to ask though, how did you manage to get the Stagefright update without updating the firmware? Software Update in the Settings won't allow me to update at all because "the operating system on my device has been modified in an unauthorised way" (I guess they're talking about the root) and Kies 3 tells me there's a new firmware available which I guess is 5.0.1 again (the N915G still doesn't have 5.1.1 as far as I know).

Nah, I mean, some Amazon and Humble bundle apps but that's it. I'm not really that worried, just would prefer to be safe than sorry.

Disable Samsung KNOX For possible Downgrade to 4.3?

As I'm sure tons of you guys know, 4.4.2 is absolute crap. Battery life, lag, GPS issues. There is barely anything good about the update. I am sick and tired of having to charge my phone almost three times a day just because the update (that Samsung claimed in my tech support chat, is "well up to date".) that isn't going to get fixed ever again.
One of these horrible features is Samsung KNOX. Just to get more customers from businesses, Samsung KNOX is ultra secure, down to the very bootloader. Basically turning into Motorola with the no-downgrade thing. Basically making it so not even older custom ROMs will flash. (I haven't flashed a ROM yet. And I'll get to why.)
Now, on HTC devices I have used, If I hated the new update, all I needed to do was Flash an older stock rom, even use an RUU if I needed to. But this update is just plain awful. And thanks to KNOX, there is no way back.
So, I have a few questions to ask.
4.3 DID come with Samsung Knox, along with the Bootloader I believe, which in my eyes, is a very narrow tunnel, but it's there.
You can uninstall Samsung KNOX through the app (If you don't have the app in the drawer, there is a way to set it up anyways. Which I did. and I pressed uninstall KNOX, but the apps are still present on the phone.)
Does this mean the security is off? Or that the 0x0/0x1 flag is off?
Is there a way to root, flash a custom 4.3 ROM, and ODIN back to Stock 4.3?
Is there even a way to do anything development-like on the device without flipping that trigger?
Or can all of this be solved by fixing settings on 4.4.2, not needing to do this anyways?
(if anyone just wants to see how bad the battery is, I can upload Battery Manager screenshots and Gsam Shots as well.)
Thanks to anyone who can provide me with some tips and maybe solutions.

Once your on 4.4.2 you cannot downgrade. It's not even an option
Sent from my Nexus 5
I heard it was strictly because of the KNOX bootloader. Which led me to believe that if I somehow rooted without tripping the 0x1 trigger, removed knox, and then flashed 4.3 through odin, that I'd be able to get back to a system version that doesn't suck.

Apps are always the biggest culprit of battery issues. If you don't already have it installed I high recommend GSAM battery monitor. That will give you an idea of what is killing the battery the quickest

If you have the app and the root companion for it then it should be pretty clear about which apps are in question
I also highly recommend an app called Wakelock detector (root)

I can't root unless I wanna tip the trigger. Which I don't wanna do. And I only have 2 apps, even tried safe mode, so its definitely the update itself.

If your on NE1 you can root but as far as I've read towelroot is the only option for rooting. As long as the kernel is before a certain date. I can't remember off hand what the date is however. It's hard remembering a log of this as I'm not locked down like most are

Okay. I really like this phone, I just can't handle the terrible battery life this update has given me. It's almost as bad as what I got on my HTC One M7 when I ran sense 7.. And that had BAD battery life. Wish I could flash and root without having to deal with the trigger.
I just tried safe mode and my battery drained the same amount.

I use mine as a phone since I had a droid ultra that broke, one problem could be the battery is brand new, and I heard new batteries need to be cycled 4 times at least. Or the update is just crap. And Samsung and Verizon doesn't care, so I'm as stuck as I can be as of now, I'm guessing.

I've never used one with this one so unfortunately I wouldn't be of much help with that. And yea TMobile coverage here is horrible as well.
I know a lot if people used the zero lemon battery which is a lot bigger

What functionality is lost upon rooting the Note5?

Just like the topic says, I'm interested in what functionality is lost after rooting the Note 5. Like for example, I've heard that the ability to use Samsung Pay is essentially lost forever, even after reflashing a completely stock ROM. And after having a rooted S5 I noticed that the Private Mode feature was glitchy and stopped working sometimes after rooting. Is this the same for the Note 5? I'm interested in everyone's experiences with their Note5s and its features after rooting.
Samsung pay cuz of knox but being rooted i am on the moar rom. No sprint radio or sprint anything installed or running in back ground, i have a faster kernal?, also a longer lasting battery, and i installed other tweaks like make the phone ring louder...basically the option to install all these features like voice recording to any rom ur on. Being unrooted ur stuck with bloatware. With ur fingerprints and cc stored on phone, what you gonna do whrn its lost or stolen
Basically you will no longer be able to use Samsung Pay and Android Pay. There might be a few other things but that's the most of it.
There are a few other apps that check for root (like Netflix I think) but I think there are workarounds. Imo, rooting is worth it than nit rooting. I like my adblock and xposed modules.

Moving from Epic to S5. Rooting & knox

I have finally made the move from my Samsung Epic 4G running CM10.0. I decided on the S5 because the battery is removable, it has a micro SD, and if I mess it up it will not be a big deal. Most important for me is my device needs to work.
I have gotten accustomed to a rooted device free of Sprint boatware. With this new phone I am a but spooked by the knox bit issue. I have poked through he forum here for quite a while, but I do not see a lot of discussion on this. It seems there are rooting methods to preserve knox, but there are plenty of things that trip knox.
What I need to know is:
Do people who mode their phones care about tripping the knox bit? So you all just trip knox and move on. Or do most of you have a work around so you can root, flash custom roms, etc. and leave knox intact. As a new lurker, I do not have a clear impression from the forum which is the prevailing situation.
For me, I haven't been trading in my devices. And since I bought the S5 used, I do not need to worry about the warranty. At the same time, there is some value to being able to return the phone to stock. Which was a nice feature the Epic had going for it.
If you aren't concerned about a warranty, don't worry about tripping knox.
Keep in mind that cm13 for the s5 has some hicups so if you go custom you should consider MOAR tw for a lollipop rom or stock marshmallow - rooted and remove the junk.
I too came from an Epic and told myself that i prefer a removable battery, but my work just bought me an S7 so I walk around with two phones. The battery on the s7 is insane. I get almost 2 days out of it on stock. Im not allowed to root it

Tripping Knox is irrelevant if you're not in-warranty. Knox's only purpose is to let the Sprint store (or Samsung) deny you warranty claims if you've rooted the phone. Tripping Knox won't affect your phone's behavior at all. You can run stock ROMs or custom ROMs.
FYI: On my old LG phone I used to run custom ROMs in order to free-up internal memory & squeeze out more performance (on an aging phone) and to get some additional features (on an aging OS). I haven't bothered to install a custom ROM on my Galaxy S5 because:
1) Stock Android 6.0.1 is really good.
2) Rooting it lets me remove bloatware (via Titanium Backup).
3) Installing the Xposed framework, and some Xposed apps (especially XtouchWiz) has brought to my GS5 all of the "built-in" features that I would normally have gotten only from a custom ROM.
4) Custom ROMs tend to be a bit buggy.
Like OP, I wasnt sure I cared about knox, but I have done all the OTA updates. Is there a way to go back to lolypop to use MOAR? I wish there was a marshmellow update to it. I really just want native hotspot unlocked.

This is exactly what I want to do on my new s5 right now. I REALLY like the 6.0.1 marshmallow... it's nice looking, but the damn sprint bloatware..omg.
In this order I want to change things:
* remove camera sound
* remove stupid "don't forget to check the back cover/charging ports"
* remove sprint bloatware
That's it..lol
I've seen one threat that says they have a stock version of 6.0.1 rooted but then I read the replies and it seems people are having issues? What was your method?
Thanks,
-Nigel
should just need to flash TWRP via download mode and then supersu in twrp. From there, TiB to remove all the crap you dont want or freeze it if you have the paid version. For the shutter sound, if you have root, you can just rename the stock camera sound file to something other than it currently is and you should be golden. The "dont forget to..." messages should have a check box in them that prevents them from popping up in the future. Dont need root for that

I rooted my stock Sprint Android 6.0.1 (PCA) phone using the root method that I detailed IN THIS POST. Then I removed Sprint bloatware using Titanium Backup (free version from the Play Store). The I added Xposed and Xtouchwiz (under which I disabled the loud volume warning, among other nice tweaks) per the links I provided above. I also added an Xposed modules (NoUsNotification to stop annoying me with a confirmation dialogue when I connect to my PC via USB) and YouTubeAdaway. The phone is now pretty much perfect for my needs/desires.

I also added an Xposed modules (NoUsNotification to stop annoying me with a confirmation dialogue when I connect to my PC via USB) and YouTubeAdaway. The phone is now pretty much perfect for my needs/desires.

Excellent!
I followed your how to and so far things are great! Rooted, nandroid backup. I have the paid TIbackup from a while ago so I am going to start freezing apps.
Just installed the xposed and xtouchwiz. Have just a couple questions for you.
1. I am able to disable the camera sound. (I had the box checked but didn't realized you needed to go into camera scroll down, then turn the shutter off..lol) I also disabled the annoying volume TOO loud in headphone mode. That's nice, thank you.
2. I enabled the no sound on boot, but that only appears to have shut the sound off via shutting down, and not when the phone starts up? Have you tried this?
*My fix was what was listed above and I added .bak to the sprint shut off/on boot noises. Now they don't make that annoying ass sound.
3. Is there a way to hide the "Sprint" in the upper left hand of the notification bar?
4. I have noticed that NOT all tweaks work, I take it this is because it's not truly meant for the s5, rather higher models..
So far I'm really impressed.
I am going to flash it so it removes the stupid sprint boot up images and then we'll see how it is.

1 & 2: I haven't tried those fixes because neither annoy me.
3: I only see "Sprint" in the upper left hand of the notification area when the phone is on lock-screen mode (not when unlocked). I've never even noticed it before. It doesn't bother me so I've never tried to get rid of it.
4: I think the developer (Wanam) for those Xposed & XtouchWiz mods says in his OPs that he just modified existing projects for non-Samsung/non-TouchWiz phones, and that (since Samsung does some things in a non-standard way) all features may not work on Samsung phones.
Congrats on the upgrade ..I did a S3 in between my Epic to S5 upgrade.
I too, have PE2 and looking to root for debloat and turn on hotspot again .. ran deoxed lollipop stock rom for a while and it was peachy .. maybe I will spring for a cool paid launcher after mission accoplished. This time will turn off camera sounds and headphone nag ...geez .
I was shopping the new phones and they are 'newer' and all the press says 'faster chip' but i don't get it ..and everyone but samsung seems to be not utilizing wireless charging or sd cards ... so enjoy your IR blaster, Radio, removable SD & batt ... get the wireless charging back a glass screen protector and a case that fits well with charging back or the s-view with charging back . . . make your S5 last !
Back to the topic , since warranty is a not a concern - the root /knox will only kill Android pay ..

I must say overall I am really happy with Marshmallow and the s5!
It's almost perfect minus the fact that it doesn't have a dark theme. That is actually the only thing that really super annoys me with this is that even when you hold down the gear button you can't put the phone in night mode. Where as the newer S phones have the theme store and you can make the phone black like it should be. I couldn't really find anything to turn Marshmallow from the ugly white to a nice dark color.
I've taken out a lot of the sprint apps. Did the xposed and xtouchwiz mods. Removed the sprint bootup/shut down noises and animations. (looking at the system/ui you can see there are multiple boot animations. I found Virgin, and a few others. I changed mine to something that was in there called crypt. Crypt pretty much has a padlock with a spinning circle on it. Looks really cool. Much better than the Samsung animation or sprint animation without a doubt.
Dummy me clicked on "update" for some reason and it found an OTA (probably security) and it downloaded it but of course failed because of TWRP installed. Then I had on the settings icon a number 1. Indicating there was an update. I could not for the life of me figure out how to make it so it just showed a normal settings icon. I deleted what I thought was the downloaded OTA patch, but the icon still showed a number 1 on it. I ended up restoring back to right when it was rooted, and doing the above tweaks again. Only took about 15 minutes.
Going forward how does one install the Android security patches? Or is that something that at this point for the phone isn't even a concern/worth it?
And to touch on what Kenny said. I actually was about to get a s7, but then started to realize certain things just weren't kosher. Non-removable battery, non root, ALL glass phone = destroyed when I drop it...etc.
I think the s5 is a great phone. Removable battery, removable storage, plastic (though doesn't feel as great) is much better than a glass phone in my opinion. My only gripe is the rear speaker is horrible... if I turn up the speaker phone too loud during calls it crackles, where as my s2 could be turned up all the way and it was just clear/loud.
Sorry for being so long winded.
Thanks,
-Nigel
the speaker shouldnt be crackely at high volumes. Might be the kernel, but i wouldnt bet on it. Try a different ROM and see if it persists. Make a NAND in TWRP and try MOAR 7.0. Mine is fine at high volumes and thats the ROM ive been using for quite a while now

I honestly wasn't planning on trying any Roms... but since you brought it up, I will ask. Since I am rooted and have the stock 6.0.1 marshmallow that Sprint released. I de-bloated it, and have it running where I want. It's been backed up.
Would I have to do anything with modems/kernels if flashing to MOAR 7.0? IE: Just wipe, flash then try it out, and if I don't like It, simply wipe, restore my previous 6.0.1 backup and it would be like nothing ever happened?
Thanks,
-Nigel
you can flash 6.0 ROMs when youre on the NCA baseband but no lollipop roms unless you flash the OK4 tar.md5. If you flash the OK4 tar.md5 you can flash LP and MM ROMs, but you cant go a version back on the 6.0 basebands.

Too Root Or Not Too Root?

Hi all i own a Tab s 8.4 LTE for a good year or so i did not trip Knox due to warranty and stuff.. But a month or so ago i found out about Viper4Audio so me flashing Twrp to install viper4audio tripped knox, yeah i know i could have not tripped knox.. if i installed viper4audio apk but the dam thing wouldnt work until i flashed it. Anyway once i heard viper audio wow im blown away now when ever i listen to the S8+ the audio does not sound as good as the tab s. So im wondering is it worth rooting ? the ones who have rooted do you regret rooting ? or shall i wait will root ever come for the S8+ EXYNOS With out tripping knox or am i dreaming for that ?
There will never be a way to root without tripping Knox I'm afraid.
You just have to decide if it's worth it for YOU.
You will lose warranty. You will lose things like Samsung Pay, Samsung Health, other banking apps, though sometimes this can be worked around.
I owned the S7E before owning the S8+, and it was the first time I have ever owned a phone that I didn't root it. It's a hard choice, but warranty is more important for me, along with Samsung Pay, Samsung health etc.
Just root. Life is bet with root.

I chose to not root my S7 edge, and the only thing that bothers me is video ads on youtube. otherwise I can live just fine without it. Custom roms tend to be too unstable for me, anyway. I won't root my S8+, assuming it ever comes out for the SD variant (bought it for dolphin, and I got it from Samsung for $524).
No. Not until we find a way to not trip knox.
I don't recommend you to root your phone you will loose Samsung pay feature for good plus your warranty. I can tell you yes it's a bit boring without having the ability to modify your phone but you can live without it. I think the stock rom is quite good and satisfies my needs . So again don't do it

No root for me. Root is history for me since two years ago.
Don't see the needs of it already. Maybe they is still one or two nice apps that need root. For the sack of that one or two apps really not worth to root and trip Knox.
I root for years any single device I have but yesterday I bought also a S8+ and I think this will be the first time not to root. So no root - vote from me
Same rooted my s7 edge just to play and get more out of it. I will leave my new s8+ Alone. Battery is great would love the customizations with root but its good enough as it is. Only thing i really miss is viperaudio. Anyone know of a way this can be installed without tripping knox??
I have the same question...
I always rooted my phone since Froyo.
I basically need it to: browse on internet "safe" and to use titanium backup.
I guess I can use some adblocked browser (any suggestion?), but I do not how to backup and restore the apps.. Any idea how to resolve it?
THank you!

First phone since the T-Mobile G1 I haven't rooted and I've had 12 smartphones since. There's nothing as good as Adblock but I'm not rooting the S8+ and am using Blokada from XDA.

I'm joining the growing choir of new S8 Plus users who have decided to leave rooting behind them. It was fun and extremely useful for me up until this S8 Plus. My Note 5 will be the last device I root. It's just not worth the hassle any longer. Lately rooting has become too much of a chore on this platform for me, personally. I've kept Samsung as my daily driver for years because one of the reasons was that traditionally it was much easier to root compared to other devices. This was especially true when I was with Sprint as they never locked down their phones like Verizon and AT&T did.
At this moment, as far as rooting is concerned, I have the same feeling I did when I finally said, "Enough!" when I was jailbreaking my iPhones. Eventually I grew tired of the cat and mouse game between devs and the OEM. This feels the same and I think it's time to say goodbye to rooting flagships for me.
Now I feel that the combined hardware and software development on this phone has matured enough that I'm okay rolling clean and stock from now on.

I have youtube red, no ads anyway, so I'm not sure.
I have been rooting since the beginning of Android, every phone I've had. I stopped using Samsung in 2013 and went to LG, then to Google (Nexus 6P, then Pixel XL), and now back to Samsung. I was honestly a little disappointed with the Pixel and how difficult it was to flash because of the dual partitions. I am in the US, and the US S8 was a no go, as I don't appreciate a phone that I buy outright being locked down. I ended up getting the SM-G955F, and rooted it the first day I had it. It was so simple, and so worth it. I feel like its 2013 again with how easy this thing is to modify. I have Viper installed, and customized to my liking, and my ROM is bloat free.
I have a Canadian S8 Plus and I've rooted all my Androids since the first Motorola. Like others I don't think at this moment rooting would bring me anything really exciting. I've installed Adhell 2 and got rid of the ads and backed up everything with the pc smart switch. I'm missing the volume warning disable mod because I found it annoying but even that one is not that bad if I don't restart the phone. Starting with S6 the best ROMs were always stock based and that became more and more evident lately so until something really new is coming up I'm going to stay unrooted. I'm with Bell and there are only 2 apps which I would not want them so basically no bloat. My 2c.

You can get rid of ads with AdGuard.
I am hesitating to root also.
I used Titanium backup until now and if someone has an alternative I would be glad to hear it too.
Did you try Helium? The paid version has many features but it will only backup some apps vs Titanium. Because of missing root it will not be able to backup apps that have "backup disallowed" enabled.
