[Q] few questions about the magnetic charger - Xperia Z3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

for those who have it and used it for long time..
1) is it charging faster/slower/same than regularly charging? (with the same charger of course)
2) is it actually comfortable? after trying it, do you actually use it daily and enjoy or its a gimmick only and you went back to the regular cable?
3) is it causing any damages? bugs? weird stuffs?
I'm Z owner (it doesn't compatible with magnets) and I'm considering to upgrade to z2/3/3c with mainly reason of the magnetic charging..
Some experience sharing would really help me out here.. YouTube is only for unboxing and showing it but no real tips from experienced users..
Thanks.

Bought the official Sony magnetic dock, a Chinese knock off one from Amazon, and a magnetic cable.
The cable is useless, the magnet hardly keeps the connection, and falls off at the slightest knock. That's thrown in my drawer at work.
The Amazon bought dock is decent. Came with two adapters, one for the Z3, one ( I assume) for the Z3 compact. Does the job, charges I would say slightly slower than the mains charger. You can't use a case with it, as its almost exactly the correct width of the phone.
The official Sony dock (DK48) is a little better quality plastic, although you don't get a USB cable with it. It comes with 4 adapters, 2 for the Z3 and 2 for the Z3 compact (for use with or without a case). It's easier to use a case with these adapters, but a chunky case like a Casemate Tough would have no chance of fitting. It seems to charge about the same rate as a normal wall charger would.
I use the docks all the time, and very rarely use the micro USB slot to charge. I have the Amazon dock at work and the Sony one at home.
I'd recommend a dock purely to stop the port flap working loose, like it did on my original Z, plus it stops your phone sliding around your desk!
The only drawback was the price of the Sony dock. It was £20 for a bit of plastic, a micro USB slot and a magnet. The Amazon one was less than half that price, and I got a USB cable with it!

Using Magnetor X cable for a while now. It saves alot of wear and tear on your USB. The magnetic field on phone gets worn a little, but thats it.
Charging time is about the same as regular USB.
Magnet is strong enough. Can be a bit fiddly connecting it and its a bit in the way and prone to get loose.

thank you both! really helpful

Magnetor X 2 adapter is fine for my use. Magnet is strong enough. Can be a fiddle to attach on occasion but usually it's fine. I use it on my desk at work and in the car.

DIY quick charge system

The dock is obviously great if you don't mind paying for it or get it free. However it's a bit clunky to carry around with you (if using a portable external battery) or in a car.
It's not a great option having to remove the waterproof flap all the time to charge as well.
So I got to thinking, could one modify an old mini / micro usb cable (I've tons of old micro ones laying around), so that the +/- cables go straight to the metal contacts on the Xz. I assume it is just a case of +/- on the docking connector? Would it matter if they were connected the wrong way...?
It'll be a bit of an in-elegant solution but to start with I was thinking of some bluetack and some sort of spacing connector bar to quickly press onto / pull off the phone.
I am pretty sure the polarity would matter, as it would be DC. However this is easy enough to check using a multimeter on the dock.
Good luck
For in-car use, I personally would put the sony charger there for the moment.
Brodit the in car holder maker will also make a version of holder which will use the contacts, but not sure when that will be out.
I'm wondering now if it might not be easier just to wait for a cheap chinese dock to come out on ebay. The dock's also got an advantage it'll hold your phone nicely if you want to use it with an external keyboard, or watch a film for example.
Just not keen on spending £25 on one.
I think it would be pretty easy to make your own, for the electrics would it just be a case of cutting the micro usb connector off then attaching red + black wires?

Could someone with a dock check and post it?
Would be great.
This would be so cool. If it was like the Magsafe connectors on Macbooks it would be ideal. Probably not for me though. Hope you can do it.
Exactly what I was thinking off..
Taking the +/- 5V from the USB cable is not a problem. The main challenge is how to mount the 2 wires onto the metal contacts!
Removing the flaps has been pretty troublesome so far, especially when you're rushing off to somewhere and ya gotta use the GPS..

copper foil would be easiest way to make the contacts, I've used it a few times in the past with my DIY wireless chargers

has anyone got a dock yet?
The 3rd party stockists haven't shipped them yet have they? The bundle/deal is a post out one..
made a sort of dock, using 2 pins from a computer molex connector + foil, held the correct distance apart with glue from a hot glue gun, but need to wait until someone can find out the polarity before trying it!
I have exactly the same DIY idea but I want to kill two birds in one stone – wireless charging and MagSafe type of mobile charging interface.
I target for Xperia Z for its IPX protection and 4G. Being an IPX certified device, the port covers are important that I don’t know why Sony doesn’t have wireless charging just like its competitor Panasonic (model P-02E has both wireless charging and replaceable battery) having. The charging dock can solve this shortcoming a bit but the dock is only good for placing at home or in the office. When charging with external battery pack on the road, the it is better to have some handy charging cable to charge through the 2-pin. Then MagSafe type of cable is a good candidate.
Googled a bit and found a flip case (Muvit Qi Wireless Charging Kit for Sony Xperia Z) with Qi charging ready and I wonder it is utilizing the 2-pin as well. If I do the DIY, I will use a thin plastic case with the following components:
1) attach a Qi/Touchstone charging coil at the inner back side of the case
2) on side edge of the case facing the 2-pin of the device, I will attach a new 2-pin port with 2 small iron plate on each end, the 2-pin will connect to the charging coil and acts as the connector for the 2-pin of the device and piggy-back to the dock for charging
3) MagSafe type of charging cable is made by a normal USB cable with one end chopped to make a 2-pin connector with 2 small permanent magnets on each end for attaching to the iron plate mounted on the case above
Great idea Kimmy, looking forward to your work! Let us know what parts you use and where you get them! Would be great !

I was thinking of a simple clip onto the side over the pogo pins.
Has anyone got the polarity yet?
Those of you who maybe reading this and have the dock already please check the polarity.
And we have an answer!
The + is the upper pin, - is the lower

I've just built my mark1 dock from a few bits of spare wood and an old sony ericsson ct75 charger plug( from an old powermat powercube), I just moved the spring loaded pins on CT75 plug a little further apart to mate a little more comfortably with the contacts on the XZ.
Cost absolutley nothing so although it looks rubish I'm happy to have a working dock. and not have to open the charger flap anymore. Tomorrow I might cover it in soft black cloth and i'm sure it'll look much better.
I'm going to bend a bit of black or clear Acrylic for my next dock because it looks like you can get away with a kind of z profile, I'm also thinking about making something for my car

This is really cool, I have been working on something similar, but was having a hard time finding suitable pins(Tried just bare wire and foil!), Never thought of using the pits from an old Sony Ericsson charger

yeah I wanted spring loaded pins and came across the old sony charger adapter when looking through my box of spares.
I opened up the jack and the pins just slide out with some careful pulling and slide back into another position, I then trimmed off the 2 prongs sony use to hold the charger into the phone, then it was just a case of fixing the jack in place with some hot glue.
the other idea i had was nabbing the battery contacts out of one of my daughters old toys, or making contacts from copper foil, but i'm happy with this result.
As i said I'll cover it in Black felt or plether tomorrow, and i'm sure it look much neater
What about instead of making a dock, just making a small, magnetized connector that attaches directly to the pins?
I'm still waiting for the phone to be released here so cant experiment but do you think this could be achievable?
I'm going to have a go at a small clip on using sugru/silicon rubber

Sony DK26 dock, for those who can't wait...

The dock is being sold on Ebay by some people, so if you can't wait you can buy it there, it is more expensive though.
The cheapest one is about 38$ for the white one.
Just by the way (more for other peoples knowledge, as I'm sure YOU'RE probably aware), there are 3rd party docks available on eBay for ~$10USD.
Not sure on the build quality, but I ordered one last week. Will see how it goes

I read on another forum that there were people who had problem with the alternative dock, for some the phone didn't even charge.
Yeah I got the cheap dock too and it is inconsistent at best sometimes it charges and sometimes it is only being able to hold the current charge. Phone always show it is being charged but if it really charges the battery back up then just holding the current level is never an guarantee at all. I went now with the original one and have no issues at all.

Dont't wait DK26 Dock !
Hi,

You may buy different dock instead of DK26.
Becauase of very simple dock and it isn't special.Only mark of Sony .Quality plastic and connectors.
It's Expensive.
And it doesn't charge or data connecting by usb on pc.
Box inside only DK26 dock .No cable , no charger.

This Decrescent dock gets good reviews on Amazon and here http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/dec...ion-for-sony-xperia-z-12-99-delivered-1567401

I'll second this. Got bought one for my birthday. It's the cheapest looking bit of "Official" kit I've ever seen.
The plastic is dull, and the whole thing is so so lightweight, you have to hold down the dock with one hand and pull the phone out with the other.
It does hold the phone nice and tight, and charges well, so I suppose it is doing the job it was designed for, but it is a really poor effort from a company like Sony, who are supposed to be into quality design. It's not a patch on the Asus dock for the Nexus 7. That thing weighs a ton!
I got the alternative goosewhite dock and can definitely vouch for it. Works perfectly, plus from what I've heard, it's not such a tight fit as the official sony dock, which could be beneficial to those with the Spigen glas.t protector, which I've heard chips in the official dock due to the tight fit.

also, if for whatever reason you don't have access to mains, it can be hooked up via USB to a laptop

Cheap ebay magnetic charger cable isn't that great!

I bought a couple of these from ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151247910444?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
The USB plug end is huge, and the magnet is very weak. It's OK if you leave it flat on the desk, but picking the phone up means it's more than likely going to fall off.
I'd be wary of this kind if you're thinking of getting one.
I'd like one with a very strong magnet so that I can plug it into a USB battery pack and leave it in my pocket without wondering whether the magnet connector has fallen off.
Any suggestions?
I also bought such a cable. Mine is actually pretty good so far. Magnet power is good enough and the overall cable is just as good as a standard Sony cable. And only 3 euros incl. shipping.

I don't think you will have any luck finding one like that, as the connector was never designed to be used as a stand alone cable, it was always meant to be inside a charging stand/dock. Even if the magnet is very strong when pulling straight out from the connector (like being able to lift the phone with it) it will still come off super easy if pulled at an angle.
Maybe you could buy a cheap dock, then cut some in it so that all that is left will be like a clamp that goes around the edge of the phone and holds the cable steady? Or maybe some cheap case where you can glue tha connector to the case and only use it when charging?
Are they no official magnetic charger available? Isn't anyone here using?

The only official magnetic charger is the DK32 charging dock. The cables that most people buy are the same cables that is inside the dock, but it's impossible to know whether they are original parts or just copies since Sony doesn't officially sell that cable as a separate unit. The ones that sellers claim to be originals could very well only be meant as replacement parts or a simple way for phone repair shops to charge the phones.
The magnet is weak and actually takes some effort to get it to align, I was hoping that it would suck itself in like a MagSafe connector does. It also charges at about 70% the speed of the original USB charging cable even when connected to the same ipad wallwart.
I'm unimpressed with my knock-off cable but for the price, I can accept the mediocre quality.

Well I paid 15 for mine (bought from a retailer) and they don't do refunds.
Lesson learnt...
What do you expect from such a small magnet? Imo it's quite strong already. I got this cable, which doesn't have a stronger magnet but aligns better, and it's cheap - I'm from Germany though: http://www.ebay.de/itm/-/291037184668
I also have the one the op has, with that one the phone started charging but it was so slow that it never finished. Modifiying the plastic and pins didn't help.
Not sure if it fits here, as my cable was not bought through ebay...
I got the OEM Magnetic Charging USB Cable for Sony Xperia Smartphone Black with Sony logo on the magnetic plug and it doesn't look too good: cheap to the looks and touch. The cable is thinner and feels flimsy compared to the USB charging cable that came stock with the phone. The magnet holds so-so but won't do too well when grabbing the phone, answering a call or whatever. The USB plug is huge, feels and looks cheap as well and can't be fully inserted into the charger; a bit of the metal part will stick out, that is.
I didn't do a full charge so far, so, can't commend on that part. I didn't measure the time but from what it felt like, the magnetic cable charges pretty fast - I'd say about the same rate as the stock micro USB cable (both with stock wall socket charger). But pay attention if you move the phone; the magnetic plug comes off really easy and might cause some bad surprise the next morning (the moment you wake up and notice your phone died on you and didn't wake you up ... about 2 hours ago, which was about an hour before you should've left to go to work and so on).
Now, if I'm not mistaken, witrigs says somewhere on their site that there would be huge difference between the Original OEM  cable and the cheaper 3rd party ones the also offer. Honestly, I can't imagine the really cheap ones are much worse (as far as look & feel and usability goes).
I bought two of the following a few weeks back (for work and home) and overall am quite happy. The magnet is reasonably strong - I can lift the phone to check an email etc without it falling off - not sure about a phone call with it attached though...

The magnetic ability is okay, not very strong but if you let the phone on your desk, it´s no problem.
I don´t know if a stronger magnet can damage the phone.
I placed a cable of this in my car-holder and fixed it with a little point of glue and there´s no problem with vibrations while driving.
And also good at this cable:
You can not reverse polarities!
I hope i could help you.

I did. But I am in Europe, so, it doesn't say anything about shipping within Asia.
However, for my order, delivery took about 2 weeks, which is pretty fast compared to most of my previous orders from China (usually 3 to 4 weeks without the customs interfering).

If I were you I wouldn't... The cable has an extremely weak magnet, it comes off at the slightest touch. It would be impossible to use whilst the phone is charging. I could have got the really cheap cable from Amazon but because of the reviews about it's weak magnet I instead got a more expensive cable from mobilefun.co.uk. Unfortunately it was the same poor quality cable.

It's not that the magnet itself is weak, it's rather the design of it.
I can lift my phone with the magnet, even shake a little up and down without it falling off.
However, as you might know the easiest way to remove a magnet is to tilt/angle it, which the design of this magnet makes way too easy.
After all, the entire connector was designed around being mounted inside a charging stand, where the phone's angle to the connector would never change. Using it as a separate cable was never intended, the cable you can buy for example at dx-box is the very same cable that is supposed to be inside that charging stand.
I think if they designed a cable where the plastic around the magnet and the connectors was laying flush against the phone, tilting the cable would become less of an issue.
That said, I can use the phone just fine with the magnet connected as long as I don't pull on the cable, as the magnet is strong enough to handle the weight of the cable with no problem.

Yup you are 100% right. I can indeed lift the phone up using the connector. The problem is with the tilt/angle as you've already mentioned above.
any of you is using thie cable from witrigs ?
http://www.witrigs.com/custom-magnetic-charging-cable-for-sony-xperia-z1-compact-black
i am also considering the magnector X, but if i plan to replace back by glass one, then purchase of this from witrigs is better economically. But don't know how does it works? How is it with charging speed and battery life?
and the last one, anyone using this original cable? and how much is it "original" ?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-Ori..._PDA_Cables_Adapters&var=&hash=item3f32e3085b
I've bought one from Amazon and returned it, the cable was falling off at the slightest touch and it was even difficult to set right to charge.
I wanted it for charging the phone in my car, which already has a usb socket adapter, but with the falling out problem it was a no-go from the start.
On the plus side, I ended up with a Supremery charging dock, which is cheaper than Sony and works better (for me at least).
I don't use it in the car - just to be clear
but was it the same from amazon that i linked, or something far cheaper, "branded " by Sony ?
How is it with battery life on Supremery charging dock? Do you see shorter life and longer charging? Am asking because some guys were complaining for those on not original dock.
Thanks
Try this one out, apparently its got fantastic build quality and a very strong magnet.
Every review I have seen has given it 5/5 and most people mentioned buying another for the car/office etc :good:

I really would like to buy this Magnector X cable but I have not found a good way to buy and ship this to Austria/Europe. Any ideas where I can buy this with realistic shipping prices to get this inside the european union?
I bought 2 pieces of Magnector directly from producer: http://magnector.com/?product=magnector-x-adaptersony-xperia-magnetic-adapter
Calculating with delivery to Slovakia it was around 26€.
I am more than satisfied with this product and totally recommend it.
You can have only problem if you are using some case. It is designed for use without it.
Just order this, http://dx-box.com/high-performance-...e-magnetic-connection-and-charging-speed.html

What do you mean by that?
What do you want to tell us with that?
Do you mean "Magnector X" ?
The Question is: Is it nevertheless a good product?
(I don't really care if they just copy&paste the description of another "premium" product)
I already ordered two of those cables so maybe I have wasted some euros on a cable no one of the posters above has ever tested?!

I have 3 of the dx-box ones:
http://dx-box.com/brand-new-magneti...dapter-for-sony-xperia-z1-xperia-z-ultra.html
The magnet may not be ask strong as the High Performance one, but its plenty strong enough for me. I use one in my car and the lead has never detached even when I have gone over pot holes or bumps in the road.
Also, at home I find it stays attached well enough for everyday usage.
Ordered from ebay same product as Sony official except it didn't have Sony logo and was like 3 times cheaper.
I have received the magnector cable and can confirm that the magnet is very powerfull. One can easily lift up the phone by the cable.
It doesn't however automatically snap on to the two (tiny) charging pins. It takes a little bit of practice to make it work.

Very cheap foldable wireless charger.

Got this charger for £12.99 on Amazon:

Feels cheap and looks cheap but it works and does the job well enough. It's foldable too, so you can use it either horizontal or vertical.
Worth it, if you need to buy a cheap one to leave at the office.
Would be great if wireless charger can work even with a metal piece on the back of casing for magnetic car phone holder

There are magnetic holders that claim to work without blocking the wireless charger. They use a metal piece shaped like an upside down "U" instead of a square one. Given all the warnings against mixing credit cards and metal on cases and what not with wireless charging, I'd be weary of trying it out myself on my own phone, but they do exist. Just search for wireless charging compatible magnetic mount, I'm sure some will turn out.
Could be that I'm missing something (perhaps even a crucial factor), but why couldn't you use a wireless charger at the same time you have a metal plate in your case? It can't be harmful to the phone right?
I have a strong enough carkit so I can use a relatively small circular piece of metal in my slim fit case for the Note 9, works a charm. I've tested the location in the case, so I can use this in my car and still be able to put it down on a wireless charger so it charges without a problem. Okay, so when I put my phone on the charger pad a bit to far down or up, it doesn't charge, but that's just a matter of trying which position is best and this will become a non-issue the more you use it (since you know exactly how to put it on the charging pad).
Please enlighten me whether or not it could be harmful in any way to the phone because I don't want to risk a $1250 phone for the convenience of charging wirelessly. But I haven't ran into trouble this way just yet. Been doing this also with my Galaxy S8 for over a year btw, it still works like new.
Btw, @OP, can you share a link to the charger?

I put a link to charger on the video description.
I just bought this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07C5KCQQ4/
Fast charges a little slower than directly plugging the Samsung charger into the phone (as expected).
The hinge is a tight friction fit, so the angle is adjusted wherever you like.
