When I type *#*#4636#*#* on my dialer it does not go into the test menu anymore. Anyone know how to access this menu on CM12s??
I am trying to get to the menu so that I can then hopefully set it to be 3G/2G only as I have no 4G access.
Previously there was a quick setting that toggled between 2G only / 3G only / 3G preferred. However this seems to have dissapeared.
Edit: Not sure what was happening with the test menu but its working now!
Still would be better if I could force 3G only through a widget.

Okay i see on Samsung or ATT for some reason is only allowing 3g connections. When i had my nexus one i was able to use gsm only or gsm auto (prl) etc..
Wondering if anyone successfully been able to change the settings when you dial:

Off-topic, but: which clock/weather widget are you using? (sorry! But I love sense and just had to ask!)

could possibly be beautiful widgets
edit - it was fancy widgets
i would love to know where you got your wallpaper
Would love a solution. The standard *##info##** pulls up the admin (or whatever) menu but I access band selection it says access restricted. The menue where you can select WCDMA only or GSM/CDMA auto etc is accessible, but the change doesn't stick. I selected GSM only and then backed out but nothing happened. Killed radio and turn on again. Still on 3G. I tried the *#*#197328640#*#* as well with no luck.
If anyone can figure out how, by any means, lock the phone to GSM or enable manual band selection it would be much appreciated.

I found out that if you go into the dialer and type in *#*#197328640#*#* that it will take you into a menu that will allow you to change it. From the main menu of the ServiceMode screen, select DEBUG SCREEN, then PHONE CONTROL at the bottom, then UE STATE CONTROL. From there select CHANGE RAT TO WCDMA to enable 3G only, and select CHANGE RAT TO GSM for 2G only.

This works, Just have to re do every time you reboot
I would also love to find a better solution to the switching- since I am now locked to a non-unlimited data plan!
Saw this on the AT&T forums, not sure if it works though.

this doesnt do anything at all .
i live in an area with no 3g coverage.. despite att sending me emails stating its be "coming" since last summer. anyways...
I set the phone to 3g only mode and I still get signal
For all the people that need their battery for a day or more I wanted to add the instructions on how to disable 3G.
Go into the dialer and type in *#*#197328640#*#*
Select "Debug Screen" on the menu
then hit "Phone Control"
then "UE State Control"
"Change RAT to GSM" will turn off 3G access and will leave your DATA on 2G.
This will save lots of battery especially for those who have low 3G signals.
Please note that rebooting the phone or even turning on "Airplane mode" will reverse these changes.
This means you will have to change the settings again (this is also the fastest way to cancel the changes and go back to 3G).
Thanks a ton for this. I'm sure it was in another thread, but I always saw mixed reports and hadn't tried it myself.
I have a 3-4 bar EDGE signal in my office, but only a 0-3 3G signal, so this will be a lifesaver.
However, as soon as there's a ROM that adds the force 2G option that should be there back into settings (and removes any other locks AT&T put in the software), I'll probably go that direction just because it is a pretty clunky way to do something that should be an option as is.
I have something to add to this. If you use a reboot or airplane mode to turn 3G back on, the next time you go to turn 3G off, you may need to re-enable 3G (WCDMA) before changing back to GSM. Apparently, the setting didn't get changed in the debug menu even though I got switched to 3G, so I had to put it back on 3G first.
Is this still the only way to disable 3G but leave 2G enabled on the Captivate? The apps in the Market are still all or nothing (3G or no data connection at all).
Thanks!
3G, 2G disabling?
Is there a way to disable the 3G/2G altogether but still use wireless?
You can always put it in airplane mode and then turn WiFi on if you don't want to use the AT&T network at all.
So I've noticed a lot of users wondering how to disable 3G and keep running Edge on their Captivate without killing their data connection. I found out how to do this from another forum and thought I'd share Hopefully AT&T will read their forums and listen to people and create a toggle to do this.
- Type in *#*#197328640#*#* in your phone to get to the "ServiceMode"
- Choose [1]Debug Menu
- Choose [8]PHONE CONTROL
- Choose [4]UE STATE CONTROL
You now have 2 options: CHANGE RAT TO WCDMA or CHANGE RAT TO GSM
If you want just an edge connection (here at work 3G and Edge keep battling to win so I love disabling 3G) then choose the GSM option. To get back to 3G just go back into ServiceMode and go to WCDMA.
Hopefully a dev or someone can make a toggle or widget
An app or a widget would be great to turn off 3G. Is there a way to get tasker to go through these steps?
You can use AnyCut to create a shorcut to the ServiceMode and it makes things much easier.
Since I don't know how to program for Android I wish I could help making a widget but I wouldn't know where to start Until we get a skilled dev to make a widget/toggle either the AnyCut link or manual entering of the code will have to do...
But at least now we know WHERE to disable 3G all other "fixes" haven't worked.
I noticed that once you change it to one of these modes there is no way to get it back to the default "DUAL" mode it begins with if you go to "Current Connection State" menu. Does this force WCDMA or GSM with no way to get it back to auto?

If you turn off your phone and turn it back on, it goes back to DUAL.
There is an app in the market that will bring up the service menu on Samsung phones.
Try this app to get into the service menu

You were able to use anycut to bring up the Service Mode? When I tap the resulting shortcut I get a crash every time...
This is on an i897 Captivate on JH2...
I was thinking of the PhoneInfo where the other tricks had you change a setting to GSM auto. I couldn't get AnyCut working either.
So as far as the dual mode, when you go to WCDMA it will go back to 3G but can still go into Edge mode if you lose 3G.
Think of it as Wireless G band also B compatible in a wireless router

Here's an app that will launch some of the codes..check it out..its free but as always support the developers

So I finally jumped in and got the WanHu ROM installed with M's v5 patch. This thing is really nice now, hopefully it will stay that way even after I reinstall some of my apps.
One thing that I've noticed is that the ability to use only 2G networks is gone. It used to be an option under Settings » Wireless controls » Mobile networks. Any chance that may be coming back?
I know some people would probably think I'm crazy to be asking that, but in my experience the batter life was pretty much double that of what I was getting on 3G, so I'd use that mode sometimes.
Thanks for all the good work on the WanHu ROM.
You can turn off the 3g at Settings >> Wireless networks >> Data Network settings & there is also a 3g widget.
Hi,
At this point you only turn data on or off. You cannot switch from 3g to 2g.
I would like to have this feature to, because the radio at my work is very poor and the battery last much longer in 2g.

switch 2g , 3g, and 2g/3g
if i have to change the default network setting (3, which mean 3g/2g auto), i can from here:
1. from the dialpad dial *#*#4636#*#*
2. from the popued menu, choose Phone Information
3. from "Set preffered network type" You can choose several options including:
"GSM auto (PRL)" (this is usually default and means 3g and failback to 2g, depending on signal
"WCDMA prefered" (this mean 3g and if there is no 3g, then 2g), this settings seems to wotk, but if you exit and return to the same menu it is changed
"WCDMA only" 3g only
"GMS only" 2g only
hope that helps.
p.s. I use Battery monitor application, which has shortcut to the Phone Information menu.

Thanks for the reply. I was messing around in those menus and could not find a "GSM only" mode on my phone. I will look again, but all I remember were an "auto" mode, a "3g only" mode, and a bunch of CDMA stuff (which doesn't apply to our phones).
But I will look again and try out the battery monitor application program as that would be nicer than typing the key sequence everytime.
And just to expand my (rather small) knowledge of the android OS. The option to select only 2G under Settings » Wireless controls » Mobile networks, is that a framework thing that has to be added?
