How-To Disable 3G and keep Edge running - Captivate General

So I've noticed a lot of users wondering how to disable 3G and keep running Edge on their Captivate without killing their data connection. I found out how to do this from another forum and thought I'd share Hopefully AT&T will read their forums and listen to people and create a toggle to do this.
- Type in *#*#197328640#*#* in your phone to get to the "ServiceMode"
- Choose [1]Debug Menu
- Choose [8]PHONE CONTROL
- Choose [4]UE STATE CONTROL
You now have 2 options: CHANGE RAT TO WCDMA or CHANGE RAT TO GSM
If you want just an edge connection (here at work 3G and Edge keep battling to win so I love disabling 3G) then choose the GSM option. To get back to 3G just go back into ServiceMode and go to WCDMA.
Hopefully a dev or someone can make a toggle or widget

An app or a widget would be great to turn off 3G. Is there a way to get tasker to go through these steps?

You can use AnyCut to create a shorcut to the ServiceMode and it makes things much easier.
Since I don't know how to program for Android I wish I could help making a widget but I wouldn't know where to start Until we get a skilled dev to make a widget/toggle either the AnyCut link or manual entering of the code will have to do...
But at least now we know WHERE to disable 3G all other "fixes" haven't worked.

I noticed that once you change it to one of these modes there is no way to get it back to the default "DUAL" mode it begins with if you go to "Current Connection State" menu. Does this force WCDMA or GSM with no way to get it back to auto?

If you turn off your phone and turn it back on, it goes back to DUAL.

There is an app in the market that will bring up the service menu on Samsung phones.

Try this app to get into the service menu

You were able to use anycut to bring up the Service Mode? When I tap the resulting shortcut I get a crash every time...
This is on an i897 Captivate on JH2...

I was thinking of the PhoneInfo where the other tricks had you change a setting to GSM auto. I couldn't get AnyCut working either.
So as far as the dual mode, when you go to WCDMA it will go back to 3G but can still go into Edge mode if you lose 3G.
Think of it as Wireless G band also B compatible in a wireless router

Here's an app that will launch some of the codes..check it out..its free but as always support the developers

Force 1X over EVDO in Touch Pro2 (or toggle btwn CDMA 2G and 3G)

Does anyone know why the registry hack for enabling the Mode of Operations in Sprint's 1st generation Touch Pro (wm6.1 stock ROM) does not work for Sprint's Touch Pro2 (wm6.5 stock ROM)?
For Sprint's 1st generation Touch Pro, Mode of Operations menu can be enabled by going to registry\HKLM\SOFTWARE\OEM\PhoneSetting and changing the value of 'HiddenModeOperationPage' from 1 to 0. Then, in Comm Manager, you could click Menu, Phone Settings, Services Tab, and scroll down for "Mode of Operations". And you will see "Hybrid", "EVDO only", and "1X Only" as options that you can select. Others even made a mortscript-based toggle switch to toggle quickly between Hybrid and 1X Only modes.
I find the same registry key in Touch pro2 (wm6.5 stock ROM), but changing the value of 'HiddenModeOperationPage' from 1 to 0 still does not bring the mode of operations menu in the Phone settings/CDMA services tab. I checked the registery key to make sure the value was still 0, and it was. But I still cannot get mode of operations menu.
This is needed to save substantial amount of battery if you live or work in an area where EVDO signal is weak and your phone is constantly jumping between weak EVDO and better-signal 1X.
Also use of Sprint's Airave, which only provides 1X, can be enhanced by forcing 1X only mode because you don't want your phone to try to switch to a far away EVDO tower momentarily because of the weak EVDO signal in your place. That would result in dropped calls all the time because sometimes calls come through when you are momentarily connected to the far-away tower.
There are mortscript-based toggle switches that people have made for custom ROMs with wm6.5 (see post#2 here), but I need to get the mode of operations menu to show up in Touch Pro2 first.
I really need this, so if anyone knows how to get it working for Sprint's Touch Pro2, please let me know.
Yeah, i wanna know how to force 1x over EVDO. The battery when in EVDO mode is very quickly drained. I see my touch pro 2 have this "force" function in GSM mode, but not CDMA. TIA

yo want 1x over evdo put a non-evdo prl.
But the phone like to switch back & forth 1x and EVDO. In my country, Indonesia, the EVDO signal is not as good as 1x so I just wanna stick to 1x (for battery reason) unless i wanna use unlimited internet with EVDO. It could be done with GSM (GPRS/EDGE vs 3G/HSDPA) so why couldn't with CDMA? TIA

I need an easy, convenient way to turn off EVDO just like you can turn off 3G in iPhone 3Gs phones with just a button in its settings menu. Read my original post, a convenient menu, for turning off EVDO in Sprint's Touch Pro exists and can be easily turned on by a simple edit of the registry. The menu is called Mode of Operations in Touch Pro.
But that menu has been replaced in new Sprint's Touch Pro2 (wm6.5 stock ROM) by a different Mode of Operations menu that lets you choose between CDMA or GSM networks for when you want to use the phone outside U.S. So I want to know how to get a menu in Sprint's Touch Pro2 to TURN OFF EVDO MANUALLY AND CONVENIENTLY just like it was possible to do in Touch Pro 1 and is possible to do on iPhone 3Gs. The purpose is to save battery for operating your phone in areas with low EVDO signal.

You are missing the point. I have EVDO working fine too, but I want a way to TURN IT OFF. The purpose of wanting to turn off EVDO manually is to save battery for operating your phone in areas with low EVDO signal. It also prevents your phone from switching to an EVDO tower when you are using Airave, so you don't get dropped calls.

Same problem here but on a Verizon HTC Touch Pro2. Using the stock Verizon WM6.5.
In my case EVDO has excellent coverage but my university has old buildings (all brick, concrete, and steel) so as soon as I walk in the signal drops from 4-5 bars to 0-1 bars. This can kill 10% of my battery during a 1 hour class!

okay the idea i proposed doesnt need anything but a non evdo prl but since you wanna switch back and forth of a prl which uses epst and you have to reset the phone everytime you switch a prl file it is not the way to go for on the fly functions. but if you wanna try and keep the two different prls in a folder on the sd card goto corolada.com/prl and download a evdo prl and a non-evdo prl and give it a shot it wont damage any settings.
I remember on my touch pro we used to force evdo by hitting ##evdo# or something like that, and it would disable or renable.

So u r saying if I wanna stick to 1x, I just EPST my phone and load 1x prl (without changing other settings)? And vice versa with EVDO prl (without changing other settings)?
I have tested a beta program called WMLongLife made by chainfire on my CDMA Touch Pro2 (wm6.5 stock ROM for Sprint). It does have the capability of switching between EVDO and 1X for programs that you want to use EVDO. This app also has a menu for switch between EVDO and 1X manually and it does work, but not toggle switch that you can assign to a physical key.
However, the maker of the program has intends to make it a commercial product so after sometime this summer the program will disable itself. The program does take some RAM, and does have bugs on some devices although I found none so far on my device.
The point is that it is possible to use the registry or some dll file to switch between EVDO and 1X in Touch Pro2. Can anyone look at WMLongLife and find out how it is managing to switch between EVDO and 1X?
My work around for forcing EVDO will work for forcing any mode. It may not be a one button toggle but at least its not rebooting.
With value 4 being automatic and 10 being HDR only all options and numbers in between are easily applied. just plug in the value you need.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=6661529#post6661529
Try this. Have done it on my phone and it works. I got it from XDA or PPCGeeks. Who knows anymore.
tested it, and works great. Use a registry editor, and go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\OEM\InitProv\PhoneSett ing
Change the ItemCount to 3
Add a String Value called "ItemName3" with the string being "Roaming Only"
Add a DWORD called "ItemValue3" with the DWORD Data being "5" (in Decimal)
Do not enter the quotation marks in the directions above. After exiting the program, wait a minute or 2 and then shut the phone off, wait a few seconds for good measure, and turn it on again. Or soft-reset by taking the back cover off (big hassle), or use the soft-reset program floating around.
You can get a free registry editor here:

This will enable the roam-only mode option in the phone settings menu. There are CAB that can do this for you or even apps that can give you easy menu to do it. Although roam only mode is over 1x only, it does not give you 1x only mode over your own carrier's network. And if you roam too much, your carrier can drop you. I need an easy way to toggle between 1X only and Hybrid modes.

I posted a couple simple scripts more like batch files that toggle great once u get it in place
Good news everyone!
sysmai has created mortscript-based toggle switches that can do for TP2 what the mode of operations menu does in the original TP. Install his two CAB files to enable mortscript capability in your phone and to create a toggle switch for toggling on/off the airline mode.
Put all the toggle switches in your Start menu folder for conveniece, and if you want to give them distinct icons, use JWMDIconChanger_V2.7c program to do it. This program only works for wm6.5, and I am providing you with some .png icons I found online to use with this program. For some reason, my TP2 is not able to open these .png files but the JWMDIconChanger_v2.7c can open them and successfully make them icons in your start menu.
Instructions to change the mode of operation using sysmai's mortscripts:
1) First use the airline mode toggle switch to turn on airline mode.
2) Next, use the toggle switches to switch to your desired mode of operation (EVDO only, EVDO hybrid, and 1X only).
3) And finally, use the airline toggle switch to turn off the airline mode.
Note 1:
The Airline toggle that sysmai has created is not the same as your phone's own airline mode feature. sysmai's airline toggle just turns your phone on and off. It does not turn off other things like bluetooth, so if you go for airline trips, please use your own phone's airline mode feature.
Note 2:
sysmai has named the EVDO hybrid mode as "Automatic" and the 1X only mode as "CDMA only" because these are the terms used in the EPST menu for which you need your MSL code to access. For those that don't know what EPST menu is, ignore it. Just use sysmai's mortscripts on your CDMA TP2's and you should be fine.
Note 3:
As usual, use at your own risk. I used my icons, sysmai's apps, and JWMDIconChanger app on my Sprint TP2 running on the latest stock ROM (wm6.5 with HTC Sense 2.5.2012) without any problems, and all his programs were fully removable on my TP2.

No, the Automatic option in phone setting/CDMA Sevices tab/Roaming is to make the phone automatically switch between 1X/EVDO of a home network and 1X of a roaming partner. The automatic toggle switch in sysmai's zip automatically switches between the home network's 1X and EVDO signals, but it is has nothing to do with any roaming signal.

Would love a solution. The standard *##info##** pulls up the admin (or whatever) menu but I access band selection it says access restricted. The menue where you can select WCDMA only or GSM/CDMA auto etc is accessible, but the change doesn't stick. I selected GSM only and then backed out but nothing happened. Killed radio and turn on again. Still on 3G. I tried the *#*#197328640#*#* as well with no luck.
If anyone can figure out how, by any means, lock the phone to GSM or enable manual band selection it would be much appreciated.

Any way to force LTE only mode?

The thunderbolt had this and it was nice.
Basically when I'm at work I'm in a fringe 4g area. If I leave the phone in 3g/4g auto mode then it constantly switches between the two and it destroys my battery. Not only that but it makes 4g basically unusable for me as it never stays on long enough to do anything with it.
On the thunderbolt by going into the phone info settings you could select LTE only mode.
On the Charge you only have the options of going CDMA only or CDMA/LTE auto. There is no LTE only option.
Is this something that can be corrected by an app or rom or kernel or is it built into the radio software?
I used the phone info app that worked great on the thunderbolt and on the charge it just comes up with a bunch of options like WCDMA only, GSM only and such and as far as I can tell none of them actually do anything.
Hopefully someone knows the answer to this because I like tethering to my tablets at work but if I can't have consistent 4g then I'm gonna be forced to return to my tbolt which is a shame because I like this charge alot better.
I haven't pucked up a Charge yet, but most Sammy phones let you for some fine grain tuning if the radio and other system settings via a menu accessed by a dialer code.
You could try *#*#197328640#*#* (is debug mode) and dig in from there.

Already tried that, it doesn't work on the charge. It just dials and you get the "Welcome to Verizon wireless, your call cannot be completed as dialed" message.
I believe if you go settings ->wireless and network->mobile networks->system selection change it to CDMA mode will disable LTE.
you can try dialing "*#*#4636#*#*" that takes me to a hidden menu on the thunderbolt. If it works, from that menu select "phone Information" then select LTE only. or if you want to disable 4g (Helps battery in non 4g areas) you can select "CDMA auto(prl)"

Thanks but did you guys even read my original post?
For starters, I'm not trying to disable LTE... I'm trying to force LTE only.
Secondly, as I previously said, This phone does not have the same radio options that the thunderbolt does. There is no option for LTE only. I understand the difference between CDMA auto PRL, CDMA/LTE auto and LTE only. THE PROBLEM IS THIS PHONE DOES NOT HAVE AN LTE ONLY OPTION!
I tried the phone info app that works on the thunderbolt, the only options are all for WCDMA only, GSM only and CDMA only and various combinations of them. There is no LTE only. Besides, none of the options present in that menu actually change anything, only the 2 that are built into the wireless network settings do (CDMA only and CDMA/LTE Auto).
Not trying to be a **** but if you're gonna post something to try and answer a question or help someone at least make sure you read the question.
In the same boat as you. I actually get decent service on LTE at home, and virtually nothing on 3G... go figure, but it keeps trying.

i have the same problem as both you guys and this is so frustrating. when its connected to 4g i get between 8-10mb down. i also have a samsung mifi hotspot for verizon and it shows a strong 4g signal and gets over 10mb down consistently in the very same location.
i have no idea why my droid charge keeps switching between 4g and 3g. the funny thing is the only reason i really mind is because the 3g signal is horrible. if i was getting 2mb down on the 3g like i have seen at other locations i wouldnt mind at all.
yeah i have the same issue as well, i'm really not even sure what it's testing to decide to switch from 4g to 3g, i live about 100 yards from the verizon tower i'm connecting to and have full reception on both 4g and 3g but yet it still switches randomly between the 2, we really need a way to disable 3g

No LTE only mode = no 4g for me.
I already did and canceled Verizon, I'll have to stick with sprint. I really loved the charge, and wanted to keep it and stay with Verizon , but my evo gets a full 4g signal both at home and work. Too bad, the charge was an awesome phone

It actually seems to be the way android handles 4G, either on purpose or just coincidentally.
I have the same issue at work with Sprint, 4G gives me 2-3 bars but there is NO 3G, but it turns 4G off when the screen is locked, so it sits there trying to get backups in 3G all day, spare parts lets you force wifi to stay on, surely there should be a similar switch for 4G a dev could find.
Any luck on this issue here? I have a feeling I'm in a fringe area where it could potentially switch me between networks quite often...
Is it safe to assume that an LTE-only option is impossible unless Samsung does something to enable this functionality out of their LTE chip (CMC220)?
Any updates on a LTE/4G only option?
I found out how to force LTE Only ...
Warning! If this bonks up your phone, don't blame me!
Use at your own risk!
Now that we got that out of the way, here is what I have found:
Enable the Hidden Menu option by entering the following code in your phone dialer: *#22745927
Enter an SPC of: 000000
Select: Hiddenmenu Enable
Select: OK (Your phone may reset after this)
To get to the "Force CMDA/LTE/Global" menu, enter the following code in your phone dialer: **583
If you press the LTE button, you will be fixed on the LTE network.
Reset your phone
Taaa-daa!
Note: You apparently need connectivity to the CDMA network to make phone calls & text messages (Thanks, chaoscentral!) Oh, well ...
To reset back to the normal LTE/CDMA automatic selection mode:
Go to the "Force CMDA/LTE/Global" menu by enter the following code in your phone dialer: **583
Press the CDMA button, which will re-enable your phone to default to the CDMA network.
Reset your phone
When your phone boots back up, go to: Settings >> Wireless & network >> Mobile networks >> System selection >> LTE automatic
Cheers!
just keep in mind LTE only mode means no phone calls or text messages. since those go over CDMA
Ah, I should've guessed they would make the phone code for this hidden menu option "LTE". Now I wish there was a way to only disable EV-DO 3G (leaving CDMA intact for phone calls/texts). Can't have it all I guess...
Thanks for this regardless!

Yep. I tried goofing around with a few different options on the "LTE" theme, but nothing came up.
Then, I realized that I had loaded new ROMs since the last time I had enabled the Hidden Menus option, and figured out that my Hidden Menus were no longer enabled. Once I re-enabled the hidden menus, I tried *#LTE#* (which didn't work), and then **LTE, which did.
BTW, for anyone that has had problems making phone calls after following my original settings, I have updated the post on to how to get back to automatic LTE/CDMA.
Also, has anyone tried that **583 "Global" option yet? Verrrry Interesting!! (But, spooky!)**
Ain't messin' with your phone fun?

Mine goes back to auto as soon as I back out of the menu. Am I doing something wrong by using the back button?
wouldn't this, by locking it, render the phone useless when traveling out of area that support that network?

Here's an alternate method I puzzled out (and then afterward discovered it was already posted in thread 751237. It's a bit faster and has the advantage of surviving flight mode; still gets reset upon restart.
Dial *#*#2263#*#* (mnemonic: *#*#BAND#*#*).
This brings up the Band selection menu which you can also access from the above method by dialing *#*#197328640#*#* then going into DEBUG SCREEN > PHONE CONTROL > NETWORK CONTROL.
Select [3] GSM BAND
Select [1] GSM ALL
Select "Select GSM All Bands"
Menu key > END
To switch back, go to *#*#2263#*#* and select [1] AUTOMATIC > Select GSM &WCDMA All Bands > Menu key > END.
Something else I'm trying out is switching the acquisition order so when it is in "dual" mode, it'll try GSM first. Even so, it will still switch to 3g if there's enough signal. Seems to help keep it on 2G though, when it would otherwise cling to a faint 3g signal with 0-1 bars.
To do that, go into the NETWORK CONTROL menu (see above) then
Select [4] AQUISITION ORDER (yes they misspelled it)
Select [2] GSM->UMTS
Select "Select ACQ_ORDER_GSM_FIRST" (at least they abbreviated it correctly)
Menu key > END
This option does not get reset upon phone restart.

I did this and now my sms or text messaging don't work help
I had this happen too, but I didn't use the above method. Don't know what happened, but when I checked message settings, I had no number under "Message Center" did a quick google search and found an ATT number "+13123149810"...now it works again.
Did u call the number
Never mind i fixed it.but now in my network type it says umts is that faster then hsdpa and are there any other number sequences i can use to tweak my phone
I'm getting RAT restricted, which I got on my Vibrant but never my Captivate...
How can I change to show the different bands?
Sent from my Samsung Infuse 4G
wcdma and cdma have nothing to do with each other. wcdma is also known as umts, the base part of 3g (and 4g when hspa+). hspa is a protocol that runs on top of this cell technology providing higher data speeds. gprs (known as edge, and some times called gsm) is 2g. you can turn one or another off so the phone does not seek and connect to both services, which could save battery life. even though ive yet to see my phone find less than 3g/4g in houston, i still dont turn it off, just in case.

Stingray 4G missing 3G fallback on CM11/OmniROM?

i could have sworn that the factory images and some older ICS ROMs allowed my Stingray Xoom with 4G to go into 3G mode (automatically or manually)... but with CM11 and OmniROM that doesn't appear to work anymore? i either have LTE or no data at all depending on where i am in town now. also, turning off LTE using the quicktile seems to turn data completely off, not take it into 3G mode...
- can anyone confirm that their 4G Xoom does in fact go to 3G when 4G isn't available (and on what ROM & baseband)?
- is anyone else having this issue with the newer roms?
thanks
ok, after reading around i'm sure i'm not crazy and that i should have 3G and 4G.
i rebooted with access to the hidden motorola field utils app to make sure my 3G radio was enabled... the app launches, but the programming menu item and field test menu items both just crash the app when chosen.
anyone have any other ideas? i don't want to have to undo bigpart to re-flash the radio with rogue recovery but that's the only answer i'm seeing...

I'm currently flashing my xoom now so i cant verify if this is possible on a tablet
but on the phone i know if you open the dialer you can dial *#*#4636#*#* >> phone information and see what preferred network type is selected
much like the settings >> more >> mobile networks selection but with more options
if you dont have the dialer i think you can create a custom shortcut to open the activity on some 3rd party homescreen / launcher apps.
If you do get it to pull up see if its set to LTE only, irc you'll want GSM/CDMA
I have the same issues. 4g or nothing.
