Okay i see on Samsung or ATT for some reason is only allowing 3g connections. When i had my nexus one i was able to use gsm only or gsm auto (prl) etc..
Wondering if anyone successfully been able to change the settings when you dial:

i would love to know where you got your wallpaper
Would love a solution. The standard *##info##** pulls up the admin (or whatever) menu but I access band selection it says access restricted. The menue where you can select WCDMA only or GSM/CDMA auto etc is accessible, but the change doesn't stick. I selected GSM only and then backed out but nothing happened. Killed radio and turn on again. Still on 3G. I tried the *#*#197328640#*#* as well with no luck.
If anyone can figure out how, by any means, lock the phone to GSM or enable manual band selection it would be much appreciated.

I found out that if you go into the dialer and type in *#*#197328640#*#* that it will take you into a menu that will allow you to change it. From the main menu of the ServiceMode screen, select DEBUG SCREEN, then PHONE CONTROL at the bottom, then UE STATE CONTROL. From there select CHANGE RAT TO WCDMA to enable 3G only, and select CHANGE RAT TO GSM for 2G only.

This works, Just have to re do every time you reboot
I would also love to find a better solution to the switching- since I am now locked to a non-unlimited data plan!

Is it somehow possible to force the G1 not to switch to GSM when the UMTS-Network only has 1 Bar?
Is it possible to add the option to only use 3G?
I've read that one android-build (a modified one) has this option.
Would be ggreat, because here 3G is everywhere, but the G1 automatically switches to GSM if there's only 1 Bar.
I think this is bad, because When GSM has full Bars, it is slower then 3G with 1 Bar.
I believe Haykuro's H builds have this feature. Maybe someone can check, since I just switched to the Dude's build.

Correct. The haykuro 5.x.xH Chungwhatever builds of Android have that feature. As for adding it to Google builds of Android....I haven't the slightest.
use bettercut or anycut.
create shortcut
activity
phone info
go into shortcut, go down until you see options for WCMDA Preferred, change it to WCDMA only.
The shortcut to Activity, Phone Info to force to WCDMA only has been in their since RC29 - you do NOT need a rooted phone to do that.
Thank you! Found the option.
Or you can dial *#*#4636#*#*, phone info, scroll down and chance the settings to wcdma only. That will force to only work on 3g but if youre in an area where theres no 3g, youll get no service...
Hope that helps

No problem. Glad to help.
So I've noticed a lot of users wondering how to disable 3G and keep running Edge on their Captivate without killing their data connection. I found out how to do this from another forum and thought I'd share Hopefully AT&T will read their forums and listen to people and create a toggle to do this.
- Type in *#*#197328640#*#* in your phone to get to the "ServiceMode"
- Choose [1]Debug Menu
- Choose [8]PHONE CONTROL
- Choose [4]UE STATE CONTROL
You now have 2 options: CHANGE RAT TO WCDMA or CHANGE RAT TO GSM
If you want just an edge connection (here at work 3G and Edge keep battling to win so I love disabling 3G) then choose the GSM option. To get back to 3G just go back into ServiceMode and go to WCDMA.
Hopefully a dev or someone can make a toggle or widget
An app or a widget would be great to turn off 3G. Is there a way to get tasker to go through these steps?
You can use AnyCut to create a shorcut to the ServiceMode and it makes things much easier.
Since I don't know how to program for Android I wish I could help making a widget but I wouldn't know where to start Until we get a skilled dev to make a widget/toggle either the AnyCut link or manual entering of the code will have to do...
But at least now we know WHERE to disable 3G all other "fixes" haven't worked.
I noticed that once you change it to one of these modes there is no way to get it back to the default "DUAL" mode it begins with if you go to "Current Connection State" menu. Does this force WCDMA or GSM with no way to get it back to auto?

If you turn off your phone and turn it back on, it goes back to DUAL.
There is an app in the market that will bring up the service menu on Samsung phones.
Try this app to get into the service menu

You were able to use anycut to bring up the Service Mode? When I tap the resulting shortcut I get a crash every time...
This is on an i897 Captivate on JH2...
I was thinking of the PhoneInfo where the other tricks had you change a setting to GSM auto. I couldn't get AnyCut working either.
So as far as the dual mode, when you go to WCDMA it will go back to 3G but can still go into Edge mode if you lose 3G.
Think of it as Wireless G band also B compatible in a wireless router

Issues w/ Preferred Network Type
Sometimes but not always, when i set it to a particular preference, it doesn't stick. Sometimes i do WCDMA only but 1 minute later, i go back in and it's reverted back to GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) default....Anyone having this issue?
There is a different menu that controls the radio on the NS.
I am not sure how you get to it through the dialer.
Download Anycut from the market.
In Anycut Add a new shortcut to "testing" which is under "activity".
Open "testing" and you should be able to to elect the band type. this one does stick
Done.
Testing just brings you to the wireless/networks screen which only has lock to 2g

WCDMA only = 3G. Using a shortcut to Testing instead of *#*#4636#*#* did stick after rebooting. Thanks for the tip clubtech.
whats the difference between:
GSM auto and GSM/CDMA auto? Shouldn't we just have it on GSM since tmobile doesn't have cdma?

Phone info. In Anycut there is also a shortcut for it. Look in Activities / Phone info.
Anycut works for me...but I noticed that with WCDMA only, sometimes I do get 3G on top, but the bars go from green to grey. I end up reverting to default GSM/CDMA.
If you call *#*#4636#*#*
And go to the Phone Information ...
Can you set the preferred network type to WCDMA preferred?
Because, I cant ...
As soon as I set to WCDMA preferred, closed, and re-check, it will be back to GSM/CDMA auto PRL
Both modes are more or less the same, but auto PRL will prefer EDGA on low signal.

Yes it can. I noticed the same issue when I first got the phone but now on custom rom it stays on the wcdma preferred but still resets after a reboot. Wcdma only stays after reboot.
Ah, you use custom ROM.
But, I am using stock ROM ...

Hey are you still on CM7Alpha2? Coz I am using this and mine can't set to WCDMA preferred permanently, it still reverts to the PRL.
Can't get it to stick on mine either. Stock rooted phone. Tried using anycut as someone else recommended, still won't stick.

Same here, preferred won't stick, so I just changed it to WCDMA only. You have to reenter your SMSC number after that though.

Same problem here.........
Did you get any issue updating SMSC?
I spent some times this morning because I accidently changed the SMSC via *#*#4636#*#*
And I could not change it back!
Every time, I got error "Update Error".
No matter what I put there:
+3112345678
+31 12345678
003112345678
3112345678
At the end, I used my old Windows Mobile, and changed the SMSC there.
It works

The number to enter there is not the phone number. Its a modified version of it, I had to load another sim card fro the same operator and refresh then copy down the number to update it back to my sim card!
Yeah, and that's the problem. In Windows Mobile, I just enter the phone number of the SMSC.
SMSC is usually a phone number.
I checked with my provider (Vodafone NL) and it is a phone number.
If it is not on Android, then I don't know what it is
I read on Nokia (Symbian), the SMSC can be entered as phone number as well.
Probably Android is not using standard format for SMSC? At least on the user interface (to update).

please excuse my ignorance, but what would be the purpose of this?
so that it dosent jump around from 3g 2g if its auto and your not using data it automatically defaults to 2g i think to save battery then switches to 3g oir hsdpa 3.5g or what att calls 4g on demand this keeps it locked on wcdma or 4g to my knowledge

wouldn't this, by locking it, render the phone useless when traveling out of area that support that network?

Here's an alternate method I puzzled out (and then afterward discovered it was already posted in thread 751237. It's a bit faster and has the advantage of surviving flight mode; still gets reset upon restart.
Dial *#*#2263#*#* (mnemonic: *#*#BAND#*#*).
This brings up the Band selection menu which you can also access from the above method by dialing *#*#197328640#*#* then going into DEBUG SCREEN > PHONE CONTROL > NETWORK CONTROL.
Select [3] GSM BAND
Select [1] GSM ALL
Select "Select GSM All Bands"
Menu key > END
To switch back, go to *#*#2263#*#* and select [1] AUTOMATIC > Select GSM &WCDMA All Bands > Menu key > END.
Something else I'm trying out is switching the acquisition order so when it is in "dual" mode, it'll try GSM first. Even so, it will still switch to 3g if there's enough signal. Seems to help keep it on 2G though, when it would otherwise cling to a faint 3g signal with 0-1 bars.
To do that, go into the NETWORK CONTROL menu (see above) then
Select [4] AQUISITION ORDER (yes they misspelled it)
Select [2] GSM->UMTS
Select "Select ACQ_ORDER_GSM_FIRST" (at least they abbreviated it correctly)
Menu key > END
This option does not get reset upon phone restart.

I did this and now my sms or text messaging don't work help
I had this happen too, but I didn't use the above method. Don't know what happened, but when I checked message settings, I had no number under "Message Center" did a quick google search and found an ATT number "+13123149810"...now it works again.
Did u call the number
Never mind i fixed it.but now in my network type it says umts is that faster then hsdpa and are there any other number sequences i can use to tweak my phone
I'm getting RAT restricted, which I got on my Vibrant but never my Captivate...
How can I change to show the different bands?
Sent from my Samsung Infuse 4G
wcdma and cdma have nothing to do with each other. wcdma is also known as umts, the base part of 3g (and 4g when hspa+). hspa is a protocol that runs on top of this cell technology providing higher data speeds. gprs (known as edge, and some times called gsm) is 2g. you can turn one or another off so the phone does not seek and connect to both services, which could save battery life. even though ive yet to see my phone find less than 3g/4g in houston, i still dont turn it off, just in case.

I want to know just for information, because for example in Korean version SGS3 possible to change setting for network priority and etc. see on picture
Maybe no one knows the codes yet.... It should be set on Automatic, My settings by default are perfect ,switches back and forth from 4g to 3g and the change is very quick, It does not lag or stutter at all. Even if there was a code i would never use it lol, But I guess google is your freind for now
Could this mean there is a hidden setting to just switch between WCDMA and GSM automatically?
I'm not yet in an LTE area so its pointless having the phone try to find an LTE connection. Currently I just have it locked into WCDMA but sometimes 3G reception is patchy and I want it to pick GSM automatically.

Maybe
Just Leave it In auto mode its not like your hurting the phone, If it receives a 4G signal it will switch if not then it wont, It doesnt waste any battery
The phone has this option in Settings>More settings>Mobile Networks>Network Mode>AUTO MODE (LTE/GSM/WCDMA <<<<<<<<< This is the default setting. It will switch bands depending what the coverage is. LTE being Priority then GSM then WCDMA
I am 90% of the time in a 3G area and I have it in this mode
*#197328640# - almost the same code as the SGS1.
UMTS->Debug Screen->Phone Control->Network Control->Band Selection would be what one would want to lock only into certain bands.
Guys may be this will be useful for somebody.
*#0*# - using this code you could enter to the hidden service menu and test all main phone hardware functions psychically
