I am nearing the one year anniversary of my purchase.
The battery life has really gone downhill, and I'm thinking of making a warranty claim. My only hesitation is I am wondering about the quality of the replacement phone which I assume will be a "reconditioned".
Anyone have any insights re the quality of the replacement phones that Google is sending out? I understand that at one time the replacement phones were new phones, but I assume that is not currently the case given the the N5 is no longer being manufactured.

The most probably is that Google would send you a refurbished phone. I can remember to read in somewhere, that when a year pass to release date, they can send refurbished phones... I requested a change in november, when Nexus 5 had 1 year, and the replace was a new phone, but it came with "yellow screen", then i needed to request a new replace and then i received refurbished phone (i have it now and all works nice).

So I have an HTC Surround currently, It's a refurbished model (I had a Focus, screen cracked, insurance gave me the htc) and I received it about 2 months ago. The microphone lately hasn't been picking up my voice over phone calls the past few weeks. So, I want to do a warranty check on it. My question is, because At&t no longer sells the surround, will they give me an alternative option; or have they set aside a number of units for such a case? If I wait will they give me a 2nd gen WP7? Any thoughts? Experiences?
Thanks!
They no longer sell it as new but they still have some for warranty purposes. They just sent me one because I'm having an issue with my Surround losing it's data connection after soft resetting the phone with no way to get it back.
Got it. Thanks!
I don't know whether its my bad luck or whether this is the typical level of customer service people can expect from HTC but I wanted to share my experience so that people might be more careful when purchasing a device in the future.
On June 28th I purchased a sensation from Expansys. Within one week of purchase I realized that there was a problem with the speaker. I returned the unit to them and requested an exchange with a new device, as the unit was a few days old. In order to receive a replacement I needed to wait until the HTC service center examined the device. What I didn't know was that it would take about three weeks for this to happen. So on August 4 I got a replacement.
The second unit run well until the end of October, where a dead pixel appeared. I contacted HTC Cyprus, fearing that the problem might increase over time. They confirmed that it was indeed a problem covered by warranty, but they would need to ship my device to Greece and that it would take approximately 7 - 10 days to have it fixed. After almost a month of waiting and several calls/complains to HTC Cyprus I got my unit back on Friday 2nd December in the afternoon. What appeared strange was that not only did they change the LCD but also a large number of other components which also changed the units IMEI. When I went back home I fully charged the unit and attempted the OTA update. During the update the phone turned off and could not be turned on again! Total brick.
Early the next morning I took the unit back to HTC Cyprus and was told that they would get it sorted by Monday afternoon as it was merely a software issue. On Monday, their technician advised me that the motherboard needed to be replace and hence, the unit would need to be shipped back to Greece. I complained and asked for a replacement and even offered to pay a small amount to have it replaced but I was told that this was not possible and that the only solution was to ship it back to Greece for fixing.
Today, I tried contacting HTC Europe in a desperate attempt to get a replacement. After an hour over internet chat, the best response I got was:
"Jon: We are HTC UK, but do deal with other European countries. Currently it is not possible to replace the handset. If the device is still faulty when returned from repair, then we may be able to replace the device."
Apparently the fact that over a five month period the phone was in service centers for over 2 months was completely irrelevant!
I don't know whether this is the typical customer experience customer should expect when purchasing an HTC unit, but be warned. It can happen to you too, and apart from complaining on forums there is not much you can do!
Yea HTC is nothing like APPLE who in my opinion has the best customer service ever. My sensation had touch screen issues so instead of getting a replacement they fixed it at their repair center took 4 weeks, but I had to pay for it too cause somehow the void seal was broken!!!!! rage!!! If you took a broken iphone to apple store, they would be like :
apple technician: Yeah this phone is like i donno, I dont really know whats going on. Just have a NEW ONE!!!
this is extremely poor service imo. serious complaining required I feel
good luck OP
Sorry to hear about your bad experience. I had a great experience when my 2 month old g2 broke. I called they gave me an RMA number. I sent it out on a Monday got it back the next Monday.

Same experience I had with my G2.
Hey petros did u finaly end up with a working sensation? I wish i had read your post before bying my sensation xe. Do u or did u experience any problems with losing audio during calls?
Recently, my Nexus 5 has been acting up. The problem specifically is that when I plug it into the OEM charger (along with 3 other chargers that I've tried), it will only hold the charge. It will not charge past the battery% that it is sitting at. Sometimes, it even drains somehow. I've tried going back to stock, clearing my cache, and other troubleshooting steps that Google sent me.
After letting them know that I had no luck with getting the phone to charge properly, they tell me that they will provide a replacement (hold on credit card, blah blah blah) but that the replacement unit will be REFURBISHED and LIKE-NEW condition.. Is this how the Google warranty has always been? It does not sound right to me. I've only had the device for 8 months, and they offer me a refurbished replacement for a hardware-faulty phone?
Just looking for a quick answer and some peace of mind if someone could quickly clarify if their refurbished replacements are something regular and I shouldn't be worried about swapping out my phone for something in like-new condition.
They used to give new devices for rma. Now that the phone has been out for some time they only give refurbished ones for rma. So yes, it's normal.

I called Google yesterday about my Nexus 5, but for a different issue with the SIM card. Same as you, "hold on credit card, blah blah blah" and then I received the email to see it was going to be a 'REFURBISHED and LIKE-NEW' unit. Knowing that the potential for abuse or misuse on a returned and refurbished unit is seemingly limitless I called them. The woman who I spoke with said that they just changed their policy 2 weeks ago and now they will all be refurbished units. They said that if I receive the refurbished unit and I don't like it, I can just send it back. They also said that if I receive a refurbished unit and it has problems after sever replacements I could go the route of returning it all together.
I'm not sure what I'm going to do.
I may stand alone when I say this, but how is getting a refurbished replacement for an 8 month old phone anything but fair? I can understand if it was a month old, but after 8 months your phone is thoroughly used. The refurbs are like new so you'll be getting a device that's in better condition than yours... I dunno, pick your battles I guess.
Refurbs are fine. They go back to LG and are put through the same QQ checks that new devices are. If housing or glass have any cracks or scratches they are replaced. The device will look brand new and they only way most people would be able to tell is because Google is telling you.

Exactly, every other device you would get refurbs from the start. The fact that Google was replacing them with new devices for 8 months is the surprising part, not that they've now switched to the standard business practice as the device nears EOL. It's like complaining about Google cross shipping the replacements. they go above and beyond what is expected of them and people still find reasons to complain.
If you return a used product, you can expect a used (refurbished) product in return.
I RMA'd my device due to a faulty earpiece. It is a 7 month old phone, and the earpiece just simply started acting up.
The refurbished device that I received is nearly flawless, but at the charging port there are quite some scratches. It seems the previous owner would fumble the cable around without looking, trying to plug it in.

They are bad enough that I am attempting to return it and get another one. I understand that they are refurbished, but I dont one want that is in a worse condition that mine. I am super caring to my phone. I expect something similar than that.
I will update as to how it goes!
Thanks for the responses (excluding the slight opinionated hostility). I feel a bit more comfortable about a refurbished device since I haven't had issues with phones before. I was skeptical because I had my Galaxy Nexus for 3 years with zero issues, it was the best phone I've ever had, so I was really surprised that a battery could crap out after 8 months just like that. I'll probably be ordering mine soon since I don't think a full refund is possible, and quite frankly, the device is quite better than the SGS products.

That actually looks like they were using some sort of dock with their phone, hence the squarish imprint. Not the worst but I agree with you it shouldn't be in a worse condition then what you sent in, and that would not qualify as "as new" in most people's opinion.
Hey all,
I'm getting sent a replacement from Google due to my current device having a faulty power button. (It works whenever it feels like it)
Are the refurbished phones clean looking like new phones? I love the look of the phone itself and have had bad experiences with refurbs (HTC).
And since it's from the Google Store, it's still rootable?
I would assume yes it's still Rootable. The refurbished units are good but I notice there was two scratches on the edge of the housing with mine. I assume it was there due to a previous screen replacement.
Should still be rootable..
If the phone you sent them was a Google bought phone yes it is rootable. If you sent them a Verizon phone probably not.
I haven't gotten a refurbished Pixel. Luckily I haven't needed it, but I did get a refurbished Nexus 5X because it boot looped, and it looked brand new.
I just received a refurbished phone and I wouldn't have even been able to tell it wasn't brand new.
Thanks everyone for replying. I received my refurbished unit and like everyone said, it looked brand new! Only issue was that Sprint was unable to get it working on their Network. For some reason, the IMEI and the MEID were entirely different. I went through 4 techs before the last one informed me that those two numbers should only be off by one, and mine were entirely different. So, Google is sending me out another refurbished one.
Wish me luck. ?
Good luck. I am going on my 4th replacement. First 2 couldn't lock onto gps satellites and my current phone died while on a road trip. I haven't rooted or modded my device and use the chargers+cables I bought from Google. There are only 2 months left for the warranty and afraid I will have an 800 dollar brick after the warranty expires.

I can't seem to find any thread close to this topic so I'm doing a new thread.
My Pixel 3 has been GREAT for the last year (bought it ThanksGiving 2018). NO COMPLAINTS! Then it started to lose charge around December 2019 and then started to SWELL around new year. My 1-year warranty has expired but I was able to ***** & MOAN with their support people and they decided to send me a replacement...
They sent me an EFFING REFURBISHED (most likely problem-ridden) unit!
I'm considering sending the refurbished back and replace the battery myself... Feedback, please!
If I'm going to replace the battery myself, where can I get a google certified battery? I can't seem to find a place to buy official parts for Pixel 3 at all...
Thanks!

They always send refurb replacements for warranty claims or in your case "other." No change coming there.
So Google decided that even though you are out of warranty, you can get a replacement, which is a refurbished device, probably just as old or newer, with a new battery, and you are contemplating to send it back and replace the battery of your old phone yourself, with all the added risk and cost?
Don't mean to sound disrespectful or anything, but WHY would you do this? You got a replacement phone while out of warranty, that's great right?

It'll cost me $30 for the battery (ifixit) + $10 for the adhesive (eBay) + 1 hour of my time. My dilemma is whether saving $40 is worth the problems down the line. REFURBISHED anything are ALWAYS problem-prone. Google forums are literally littered with HUNDREDS of posts complaining about their REFURBISHED JUNKS. Haven't you ever got a refurbished item ever in your life? What was your experience with REFURBISHED stuff?

Nah... They basically sent me a piece of JUNK to replace the other piece of JUNK they sold me. They agreed designing a piece of JUNK that only last 1 MONTH beyond the warranty isn't something to be proud about after I called them out on it... They're not doing me any favor!

I meant sending this REFURBISHED JUNK back and STOP THE CLAIM and just do the battery replacement on my original device myself. I'm ready to GIVE UP on GOOGLE.... I know they will just send me another PIECE OF REFURBISHED JUNK back. At least I know my current device is good except for the battery. The PIECE OF JUNK they sent me as a replacement can be a potential MINEFIELD! I replaced batteries many many times... It's just that for other brands, the battery usually fail TWO, THREE YEARS down the line... Not like the JUNKS from GOOGLE, literally days after the warranty ran out.
The only thing that BURNED ME UP INSIDE was that the Pixel 3 battery failed 3 weeks after I bought the Pixel 4XL. I can't sell this Pixel 3 to recoup some of the Pixel 4XL cost now... Had it failed before ThanksGiving and seeing how they would send me a REFURBISHED JUNK as a replacement, I would have NEVER BOUGHT the Pixel 4XL. I felt like I was SCAMMED! TWICE!
It's hard enough to sell a NEAR PRISTINE Pixel 3. One with a swollen battery or WORSE, a REFURBISHED JUNK one? FORGET ABOUT IT!
The Pixel 4XL will be my LAST GOOGLE DEVICE... I'll give Samsung a try for my next one...

All I can tell you is that my wife and I had OG Pixel and XL pretty much from day one and ran them with no issues until the 3/3XL were released when we traded them in after over 2 years. No battery swelling ever.
Almost a year and 1/2 with the 3s. No issues. Want to guess what the OGs replaced? S4s that suffered from battery swelling that caused complete display failure.
My wife dropped her phone and we went through our carrier insurance and for the low deductible of 199 USD they did send a brand new unit with all the accessories.
You probably used you quick charger to much and swelled the battery, had every Google phone since Nexus 1, never a swelled battery
You think Samsung is going to give you a brand new phone out of warranty?

Never had any problems with refurbs... If there is anything wrong with a sent refurb, send it back. I really don't understand why a refurb unit is considered 'junk'.

I asked support for replacement twice (first time it was high battery drain, the second died completely suddenly) and every time they sent me brand-new Pixel 3. But the last replacement was Not Pink instead of white, but it looks really nice IRL. I bought it at Google Store Germany.
