Purchased a used Photon Q for my lady and want to root it for her. How can I tell if the bootloader was already unlocked by the previous owner?
Shut the phone completely off.
Then hold both volume button on the right side and hold the power button until the screen shows a menu.
Release all button and scroll down to "AP Fastboot" with vol_down and select the entry with vol_up.
There you will see a "Device is LOCKED" or "Device is UNLOCKED" somewhere.
I am not sure if it is possible to lock the device again.
If it is possible, there is no way to check if the bootloader was unlocked before.

Hi,
I'm new to Android. I'm checking out the CyanogenMod guide and it says:
If the Bootloader on the Nexus S has already been unlocked, you may skip this section.
.. how do I check if my nexus comes unlocked or not?
Thanks
Power off the phone hold and continue to hold the volume up button and press the power button. Use the volume keys to toggle down till recovery lights green. Press power buttom. If you see the custom recovery titled: Clockworkmod then it has been unlocked. Or the other method to bypass this has been done.
Or more simply if you are the first owner of the device and are new to android you don't have a unlocked bootloader because you have not done the precess needed to root the device.

Ummm your bootloader can be unlocked without changing recovery.
Just turn the phone off. Hold volume up and power, this will get you into bootloader mode.
Look for lock state. It'll say either unlocked or locked.
If its unlocked, you'll see a lock under Google upon turning the phone on
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA Premium App
I suppose someone should add that unlocking the bootloader while simple enough in comparison to other devices, will erase the internal SD of the phone so make a backup if you have anything you don't want to lose
It is possible to root the nexus s without unlocking the bootloader thus not losing data. I did the oem unlock on one device and the non oem unlock on another. There is a thread for it in the sticky.
Hello there,
I followed the steps in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1710755. But, at the last step, after I typed in the code, the tablet tried to restart and stopped with two lines at the upper left corner: "Bootloader version JB-653b3d3 (unlock mode)" and "Bootloader VJB-653b3d3 (unlocked mode): starting fastboot use download protocol". Then it just freezed here with a big ACER in the middle of hte screen. I had to turn it off to reboot it. However, even it says the bootloader is unlocked, the combination power+volume down didnot work. It doesn't go to the bootloader mode. So has anyone got this issue before? Is there anything I did wrong? Thanks.

Power+Volume down is only part of it. It sounds like you want to get to recovery... correct. If so:
Press and hold volume down and press power until the tab vibrates.
continue to hold volume down and release power until the tab vibrates again.
move to volume up and hold until the tab vibrates a third time and release all.
You are in recovery.
Stock recovery is extremely limited.
You would be better served with a CWM recovery to flash ROMs.
This is done on the computer.
If you are looking to return to fastboot mode to flash a recovery, this is also done on the computer.
"ADB reboot bootloader"
wait for the tab to reboot
fastboot flash recovery C:\path\*recovery*.img
Hi I'm hoping someone can help or at least point me in the right direction if i've missed a thread, i'm on Windows 7 64bit.
I appear to be stuck in a boot loop on my original Shield Tablet, stuck on nvidia screen when i try to go into recovery mode i get the "dead android" picture.
I have tried to unlock the bootloader and i get FAILED <remote: <>, device shows up under fastboot devices command, device shows up as Android Bootloader Interface in Device Manager.
I've searched the forums and seen this problem but everyone else seems to be able to unlock easily, this is the same but no replies https://forum.xda-developers.com/shield-tablet/help/nvidia-shield-unlock-bootloader-failed-t3178865.
Any help anyone can give me would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Check the recovery images section for your device here: https://developer.nvidia.com/shield-open-source
Instructions to unlock the bootloader:
Unlocking the Bootloader
Your SHIELD TABLET may have shipped with a locked bootloader. To update the device,
you must unlock the bootloader using the following:
- fastboot oem unlock
- Press the "Volume Down" button to select "Unlock bootloader" option on device
- Press the "Power" button to confirm the unlock. Your device's bootloader is now unlocked.

You need to already have adb set up and the Shield connected to the PC to do this. If you don't have USB debugging enabled, this may not be possible, but you should still be able to get into recovery by booting the tablet with Vol- and power button (hold volume - and then just press the power button, don't hold both at the same time).
Yes I've tried that (I know the steps of unlocking the bootloader) that's when i get the FAILED error. When I try to enter recovery I get the "dead" Android picture.
Yesterday I updated my parents nokia 3. After the update I can't unlock the phone anymore. When I enter unlock pattern it always says that it is incorrect. I'm 100% sure that it is correct.
If I restart the phone, it asks for pattern to boot android. I enter same pattern and it works. Android boots up and then phone asks for pattern again to unlock desktop. And the pattern doesn't work anymore. Phone doesn't have any other unlock methods, just the pattern. Tried to boot the phone into recovery menu and make hard reset. Volume+ and power button. But instead of recovery menu I get picture of dead android and text "no command". Any ideas how to fix this?

Solved by myself. While dead android picture is displayed: Press and hold power button, press once volume+, release power button. This will get you into recovery menu.

I'm a new user so I can't post image links, but I believe I am looking at the fastboot screen. There is a bright green START at the top and you can rotate to other options via the volume rockers.
Anyways, when I hit the power button on the "start" option, the "powered by android" logo pops up for a second then it goes right back to the fastboot screen. Same deal with recovery mode, same with "restart bootloader",only thing that works is the "power off" option.
I'm trying to root my device but i have the 5g sprint version, and the OEM option in developer settings is locked/greyed out. So people said to convert the phone into the international version which will then allow you to unlock the OEM option then allowing you to root. So I followed the steps, I saw the device pop up on the msm tool, i hit start, it finished downloading and went green. And now the phone is stuck like this.
Any advice?
Update: well now even when i hit the "power off option" it goes off then comes back to the boot screen, guess i have to leave it plugged in over night.

After following the steps you mentioned, did you unlock the bootloader? If so you can flash TWRP and get it back to stock.
Try holding V+ and PWR to switch off.

Oh you mean volume up? yes I've tried, it just cycles through the options quickly and does nothing.

Get into stock recovery and wipe the phone. Power off and then hold PWR & VOL DWN.... you will lose all your data but it should boot after.
