[Q] I can brick my phone? - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi people! I am new here and i need a bit of help... First of all thanks for your replys and sorry my abd english, is not my native language.
Well in resume my moto G originally was us global gsm 4.4.2 later i changed to gpe 4.4.2 then change back to us gsm for about 1 month.
When 4.4.4 was relesead i change back to gpe later i manually flash the ota to 5.0.1 by sideload, i was a little insastified with lollipop so i rollback to gpe kit 4.4.4 and later 4.4.4 brasil, (with 2 failed attemps because missings comands) so... My question if upgrade again to lollipop with the ota notification in phone i can brick or hard brick my phone? I heard people getting hard bricks for things similars and i am a litle scare to update.
Thanks for reading.

Bump

Firstly don't bump... Secondly, yes you will brick your phone and I can't understand why you even bothered with lollipop with all the modifications you made...

[Q] flashing roms back and forth?

Ok, so I've been doing a lot of reading, and would like some confirmation for if I understand this part correctly, I had a hard time finding anything on flashing rules for the moto g.
In general you can flash any rom stock or custom back and forth as long as you stay within the same version number or you can update, but no downgrading, am I right? So if I have a boost moto g with stock 4.4.2 and I flash to Verizon stock 4.4.2(for pageplus) or CM11(for custom rom) I can then turnaround and flash boost stock 4.4.2 and everything will be fine? as long as I don't upgrade to 4.4.4 in which case I would be fine as long as I stay within 4.4.4 roms?
Please let me know if I understand this correctly, and if I missed any small but important details that have to do with rom flashing.

no problem bro, happy to help
Actually you can't downgrade from 4.4.x to 4.3 because the bootloader is different and if you try you'll brick your device but you can flash any rom back and forth if is based on 4.4.x because the minor release are just small bugfix to the system. So actually what said theonecallednick it's not totally true.

I don't get it. if we can simply install a GPE rom on our xt1032 and OTA update it to android l with needing to revert back to stock rom and unroot our devices, why is everyone talking about reverting back to original form and not just putting GPE and that's it.
can someone please explain?

[Q] MBM-CI 5.0 ? For hardbricked devices

I installed the Brazillian lollipop (5.0) soak test on my Asian Moto G,
I've heard that 5.0.1 has came out for GPE devices, so I flashed the GPE 4.4.2 ROM to my phone
then I planned to upgrade to 5.0.1 via OTA,
The 4.4.2 GPE ROM seems has no problem, but after I install the 4.4.4 OTA, my phone won't boot at all, not even to fastboot mode,
So I googled and I found out that we need MBM-CI 5.0 to bring our dead devices back,
As I said, I've heard that Official Lollipop has came out for us,
So does it mean that Motorola has also released the MBM-CI 5.0?
If it does, then where can I get it?
Sorry for my bad English, I'm Indonesian, and I hope some of you could help me out
Thanks

It happens that we face the same thing. I did the same as you couple of days ago. Just wait for the Motoflasher to release the MBM-CI 5.0. Probably the new tool will be released on January or February as the motoboot.img for 5.0 officially released.
Sabar aja bro. Sheers!

I have read that we should leave it always connected to the wall charger until the MBM-IC lollipop will be out.
The guarantee would cover the issue being the Nexus stock at the time of the Brick, even starting it there should be no signs of tampering, but the problem that if for unlocking the bootloader deny us the guarantee, we could spend more than worth the MotoG ... sure thing, I'm glad I bought a Nexus 5, after 1 year of modding I never had these problems, not be purchasing anymore device not Nexus. Should be out before the factory and after the OTA, not the reverse.
When I can do it on again I sell it and buy my girlfriend a Nexus 4 White.
Where will it be released?

We could always try to send him assistance hoping for a warranty repair, or paying for the work, I do not think it can cost as much, being a smartphone cheap ..
I am on the same your situation, we can not throw a smartphone that worked great, you might not find a solution, I am not a MotoG users, the Moto G is my girlfriend, is the first time I've heard of MBM-CI and is the first time that brick making a smartphone with a firmware downgrade stock .... crazy stuff .... Sure you never buy a smartphone more than a Nexus .... What a horrible situation ... I have seen that there are several files MBM in the OTA but I would not know how to make them useful for our purpose ... From what I see nobody starts moving to resolve the situation.

yep, that's how bootloader works, bro. That's why after we unlock the bootloader, we always notified everytime on out bootscreen. the motoflasher has help many users on 4.4.4 now we have to wait for the 5.0 officially released by Motorola. the MBM-CI files for blank-flash wasn't inside the OTA files, but inside of motoboot.img, what we have inside ota is only boot.img.p. that's all what i know.

The strange thing that I bricked after returning to the stock not GPE after a soft brick after OTA 5.0.1, I came out of brick by flashing the official firmware 4.4.4 no GPE, I put the 4.4.2 GPE and has bricked during OTA 4.4.4 GPE .... can I still had the bootloader of 5.0.1 .... ???
I should not have the old bootloader after the downgrade ... ???

What rom did you use before returning to the stock? Did you use the Brazillian soak test? If you did, then it makes sense, you ruined the bootloader, just like I did
So now, what we gotta do is wait, isn't it?
My question is : How long we must wait for it?

Reverting my 1032xt retail US back to 4.4.4 stock from 5.01gpe

Hi guys,
Since the official lollipop update seems imminent I would like to revert back to 4.4.4 stock(US retail) from 5.01 gpe. I know there are a lot of tutorials but they all seem to be for 1033xt. (I don't want to run 1033 fw on my 1032) Could somebody help me with the correct procedure and links.
Thanks in advance.

Hold out for 5.1 or downgrade to kitkat

Hey guys my moto g XT1032 has been incredibly slow since the update to 5.0.1, I think this is due to the memory leak issue?
Restarting solves the issue for all of 20 mins - I've also tried wiping the cache.
Has anyone had any experience with this ?
I'm stuck between waiting for 5.1 and fixing it or downgrading to kitkat - it's incredibly frustrating at this stage waiting for my apps to load.

IMO kitkat is far more responsive, quick, and stable than lollipop. Lollipop 5.1 is better than 5/5.01/5.02 but I still prefer kitkat over Lollipop. That's just my opinion.

Okay. In your original post you stated that you have the 2nd gen moto g. The xt1032 is the 1st gen moto g.
Also, if your bootloader is not unlocked and/or you are not rooted then you are stuck on Lollipop. If it is unlocked then you can adb fastboot the correct 4.4.4 firmware for your phone to go back to KitKat. I purchased my xt1028 with JellyBean on it, ota'd to 4.4.2 KitKat, then later took the 4.4.4 ota. Unlocked bootloader, rooted it and flashed numerous KitKat roms. Then upgraded my bootloader from 41.13 to 41.19 and flashed more than a few Lollipop roms. At the end of the day, I am just not impressed with Lollipop at all. Too bright, too many colors, and the design is too kiddie-like, as though they designed it for kindergarten children. Grow up android, and make an os for adults.
I reverted back to KitKat and I like it far better. Although I am about done with android. Going to iphone.
thanks for the reply - you're right -I'm a 1st gen ( XT1032).
So am I completely stuck on lolipop since the upgrade? ( I'm not rooted)

Yes, unfortunately if you are not rooted you are stuck on lollipop. However, you have a GSM phone and I think it is unlockable through Motorola's bootloader unlock program. Here is a link that may help: http://motogroms.com/moto-g-bootloa...o-g-xt939g-xt1008-xt1031-xt1032-xt1033-xt1034
And if you have success unlocking your bootloader, this link will help you restore KitKat on your phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2542219
Keep in mind though that when you took the Lollipop ota it updated your bootloader so even if you restore your phone to KitKat you will still have the updated bootloader(bootloader cannot be downgraded) so you will have some screen flicker every time you reboot your phone but that is resolved by just turning the screen off/on.
If you need any further assistance please feel free to let me know and I'll do what I can to help.
Upgraded mine 2 days ago I totally hate lollipop
the lock screen sucks with the speed dial on it .....I have acidently made calls twice......I have had to put a pass code in to stop this happening
untill I can find a way of removing this pile of **** from my phone.

Your welcome.
And I am not quite sure if there is a 5.1/5.1.1 Lollipop update for your phone. You can always visit Motorola Software Update Page to check.
