[Q] flashing roms back and forth? - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, so I've been doing a lot of reading, and would like some confirmation for if I understand this part correctly, I had a hard time finding anything on flashing rules for the moto g.
In general you can flash any rom stock or custom back and forth as long as you stay within the same version number or you can update, but no downgrading, am I right? So if I have a boost moto g with stock 4.4.2 and I flash to Verizon stock 4.4.2(for pageplus) or CM11(for custom rom) I can then turnaround and flash boost stock 4.4.2 and everything will be fine? as long as I don't upgrade to 4.4.4 in which case I would be fine as long as I stay within 4.4.4 roms?
Please let me know if I understand this correctly, and if I missed any small but important details that have to do with rom flashing.

no problem bro, happy to help

Actually you can't downgrade from 4.4.x to 4.3 because the bootloader is different and if you try you'll brick your device but you can flash any rom back and forth if is based on 4.4.x because the minor release are just small bugfix to the system. So actually what said theonecallednick it's not totally true.

[Q] Which stock firmware should I install?

Hi all,
I have rooted my Moto G and I installed Cyanogenmod 11 on it.
Cyanogenmod hasn't made Snapshot builds since M6.
M6 is getting old. I could install the latest nightly, but last time I installed a nightly version I couldn't play Soundcloud and other music related apps.
So I want to go back to Stock 4.4.4
I've got 2 questions:
1) Where can I download the stock firmware? I have already searched at http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=14 , but I can't find the latest 4.4.4 update. (at least not for my region, which is The Netherlands)
2) There are plenty of firmwares. Before I installed Cyanogenmod, Stock 4.4.2 176.44.1.falcon_umts.EURetail.en.EU (no specific carrier) was preinstalled on the device. Now I would like to install Android 4.4.2 KOT49H.M004 (no specific carrier) which is smaller than the preinstalled one. But is it safe to do that?
Thanks in advance!
Did you ever update your phone to 4.4.4 on stock via OTA?

What's your bootloader version? If it's 41.13 you can install the GPE 4.4.4 firmware, pure android from google, or the European version again, if you want the Motorola features (MotoCamera, MotoGallery, Radio FM, MotoAssist, SMS Messaging (AOSP), Keyboard (AOSP), MotoCare, MotoMigrate). I like the GPE, I miss just a little the HDR mode of the MotoCamera. GPE also consumes less ram.

Hi,
Thank you for your reply.
I found out that I have bootloader version 41.13. I would like to convert my moto g to Google Play Edition. Is it safe to install KOT49H (4.4.2, which has a lower bootloader version)? I can't find the file for GPE 4.4.4.

Yes, I updated from 4.4.2 to 4.4.4 via OTA on stock ROM. I had installed a custom recovery at that moment. I was afraid it would go wrong, but the recovery successfully installed 4.4.4.

If you updated to 4.4.4 via OTA you running the v41.13, it's shown in the fastboot main page (the one you get when you press vol down + power button). There you go:
GPE 4.4.4
If you have XT1032 will work for sure, I never tested it on other models.:good:

You're welcome I hope you like your GPE Moto G as I like it. It's a very light firmware, on my device the battery consumption in airplane mode is only 3℅ per night and the average ram usage is like 450-500 MB. Also I never got lag during the usage... And you get updates 1 month before the others. Enjoy it
This thread answers the questions I've been wondering about for the longest while but one problem, my bootloader is 41.11 (XT 1032 US Global version on 4.4.3) and my worries is if I update to 4.4.4 GPE and want to switch back to stock 4.4.3, I would not be able to. Currently running 4.4.2 GPE on the 41.11 (stock 4.4.3) bootloader. Everything works well, just can't change bootloader, obviously.

I flashed 4.4.4 GPE then 4.4.4 brazil, then 4.4.3 brazil, then 4.4.2 brazil, then 4.4.2 GPE... in this precise order. You can flash whatever you want The only thing you can't downgrade is the bootloader.

The firmwares for 4.4.2 and 4.4.4 GPE does not have in the emmc but the OTA does. As I said above, someone is looking to buy the phone, so I would leave it as is. Plan to get to get the dual sim version.

No I don't believe you can ota because if a different boot loader version...you can flash the European union firmware...

The most stable Lollipop ROM will most likely be the official lollipop ROM (CM12S), which is meant to be released next month. In order to take that update you first need to be on CM11S though, and it's likely that you're not on CM11S if you have the Chinese model. Go into Settings/About Phone and tell me what it says under Cyanogenmod Version.

You're on CM11S so when the update comes you can take it. Asking which ROM is most stable never really works out, you'll get a bunch of people all with their own opinion contradicting each other. Just find one you think you'll like by checking the features in the OP, and read the last ten pages or so to see what bugs are being reported. Just keep in mind that a lot of bugs are caused by user error.

Yes, you can root the stock ROM and still receive OTA updates. You need an unlocked bootloader and a custom recovery to flash root but that's ok because you'll still get OTA with those as well.

[Q] Noob question roms

I just want to get this straight before I do anything rash. In order to install a custom rom ie MOAR on my sm-900p if the rom says 5.0.2 does my android version have to be the same or can it be 5.0 and still work without bricking? Along these same lines, is it possible to downgrade to 4.4.4 via the stock room and will there be any issues? I have also read about leaked stuff like I am running 5.0 and if I wanted to somehow get a leaked 5.0.2 rom how does this work?
Thanks in advance.

If you want to install MOAR, check the MOAR FAQ and it should answer all you questions. Post#2 is a step by step on installing. Recommend you stay away from leaked versions until you're more comfortable about how to get out of a problem. MOAR 6.0 is based on the official Lollipop release. If you have any MOAR questions after you've read the instructions, feel free to post on that thread.

Hold out for 5.1 or downgrade to kitkat

Hey guys my moto g XT1032 has been incredibly slow since the update to 5.0.1, I think this is due to the memory leak issue?
Restarting solves the issue for all of 20 mins - I've also tried wiping the cache.
Has anyone had any experience with this ?
I'm stuck between waiting for 5.1 and fixing it or downgrading to kitkat - it's incredibly frustrating at this stage waiting for my apps to load.

IMO kitkat is far more responsive, quick, and stable than lollipop. Lollipop 5.1 is better than 5/5.01/5.02 but I still prefer kitkat over Lollipop. That's just my opinion.

Okay. In your original post you stated that you have the 2nd gen moto g. The xt1032 is the 1st gen moto g.
Also, if your bootloader is not unlocked and/or you are not rooted then you are stuck on Lollipop. If it is unlocked then you can adb fastboot the correct 4.4.4 firmware for your phone to go back to KitKat. I purchased my xt1028 with JellyBean on it, ota'd to 4.4.2 KitKat, then later took the 4.4.4 ota. Unlocked bootloader, rooted it and flashed numerous KitKat roms. Then upgraded my bootloader from 41.13 to 41.19 and flashed more than a few Lollipop roms. At the end of the day, I am just not impressed with Lollipop at all. Too bright, too many colors, and the design is too kiddie-like, as though they designed it for kindergarten children. Grow up android, and make an os for adults.
I reverted back to KitKat and I like it far better. Although I am about done with android. Going to iphone.

Yes, unfortunately if you are not rooted you are stuck on lollipop. However, you have a GSM phone and I think it is unlockable through Motorola's bootloader unlock program. Here is a link that may help: http://motogroms.com/moto-g-bootloa...o-g-xt939g-xt1008-xt1031-xt1032-xt1033-xt1034
And if you have success unlocking your bootloader, this link will help you restore KitKat on your phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2542219
Keep in mind though that when you took the Lollipop ota it updated your bootloader so even if you restore your phone to KitKat you will still have the updated bootloader(bootloader cannot be downgraded) so you will have some screen flicker every time you reboot your phone but that is resolved by just turning the screen off/on.
If you need any further assistance please feel free to let me know and I'll do what I can to help.
Upgraded mine 2 days ago I totally hate lollipop
the lock screen sucks with the speed dial on it .....I have acidently made calls twice......I have had to put a pass code in to stop this happening
untill I can find a way of removing this pile of **** from my phone.

And I am not quite sure if there is a 5.1/5.1.1 Lollipop update for your phone. You can always visit Motorola Software Update Page to check.

New Moto G...update from 4.4.2 before rooting?

I just got a new Boost Moto G that came with 4.4.2. Upgrade is available. I plan to root and flash CM13 as I have on my GS3. Can I just go from here or should I upgrade to 5.1 via carrier before rooting and flashing a ROM? Does it make a difference? I have everything downloaded and ready to go for rooting on 5.1 as the phone was advertised as coming with 5.1 installed, and I hadn't planned for this situation.
Thanks!
Hi,
Can i ask what's the exact model of your Moto G ? (XT10**)
If it's a 1031, i suggest you to look the great emptiness of available roms before doing something...
Always if it's a 1031, suggest you to do your update and root it...sadly, i think it will be the most you can do for it but i hope i'm wrong and some dev will do something for you and other owners.
You can also unlock it anyway, install a custom recovery and flash it with optimized rom from here :

but i'm afraid it will be the best you can do for the moment...

http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g/development/rom-stock-motorola-lollipop-rom-t3017510
but i'm afraid it will be the best you can do for the moment...

I'm not sure, it says 175.44.1 falcon-cdma-boost, model Moto G. It was a "certified preowned" for 29 bucks from Boost lol
So CM13 nightly won't work on this one if it is 1031? I thought it was for falcon? Honestly, all I want to be able to do is apply CM themes and do a few tweaks to the status bar.

Sorry, i don't own one and i'm not from US, so i just report you things i read...
Take a look and try to find a rom for 1031...another one that what i've proposed, of course...
As you wrote : 29 bucks...
Sad to see Moto G's finishing their nice career in such harsh way but keep in mind that they came out in 2013...
Nice phone, love my XT 1039 but it's not given to every model to be an HTC HD2 like...

NICE, i've missed it but glad for you i have...
Try it, nice one...some minor bugs only...be careful, follow instructions and everything will be OK...
Try to avoid CM recovery if you can, prefer TWRP if it's available and let us know results

I was actually wondering if I can use the newer version of TWRP. I have 2.8.6.0 on my other phone. Do you by chance know if 3.0.0.0 will work with CM13 on xt1031?

For CM13, sure (just done now a test flashing my previous CM12.1 based BlissPop and back on my daily driver MM CM13 Bean Stalk for another Mate who asked for in Peregrine (XT1039) section. Everything worked flawlessly !!!)
For your CDMA, not so sure...use the latest who's totally safe !!!
2.8.7.0 would be nice & enough if you can find it but 2.8.6.0 must be enough too imao...

I am looking at the TWRP site and did some research...apparently the xt1032 version works on the 1031 but some roms won't install with TWRP because of the model number discrepancy. So I'm looking around to find out if CM13 checks for model number in recovery to flash...some require it and some don't, apparently.

Maybe wait for another advice would be a smart thing...
We can try to ask help from @lost101 too, if he could help with this case...he is original/optimized roms Great Guru for all Moto G's & E's

:good: Keep the faith !!!
Before you do anything, unlock the Bootloader:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47705438&postcount=6
Then flash the 5.1 Factory Firmware Image: (Fastboot Tutorial)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g/general/index-moto-g-falcon-factory-firmware-t3110795
From that point you can move on to custom ROMs if you wish.
To clarify, you have an XT1031 Moto G.
