So I've been in a happy relationship with my rooted, stock rom/recovery Nexus 5 for a while now. I updated to 5.1 the other day through ADB without issue and everything has been working fine until I took a plane to France (I'm originally from Spain) a couple days ago for the weekend.
First thing I noticed is that roaming didn't work. No matter what I switch on the phone I get network but no data coverage. I checked with my carrier and everything is right on their end. I switched SIMs just in case and it's a phone issue.
The next thing, WiFi doesn't work. When I go to WiFi through quick settings it's always toggled on, searching, but never getting any results. However the icon appears as WiFi off. When I go to WiFi through general settings, no matter what I click, it appears as off and with no results.
I thought about reflashing radio, but when I got to my hotel room I discovered that ADB wasn't working. ./adb devices throws no result. Plus, Android File Transfer (I'm on a Mac) doesn't work either. USB charging works just fine.
Next option would be to restore the phone to factory settings and go from there, but I would rather not use that option before discarding all the others. I have my TB backups in order, and the most I would loose would be a couple pictures.
Any crazy ideas I can try? I'm flying back to Spain in two hours so when I land I will discover if I have data on my home network or if I don't. In the meanwhile, I'm going to be on a plane with my laptop, a USB cable, my phone and a lot of time to try things.
Thanks!

Hey everyone, first post here. Been a Droid Eris user with KaosFroyo/CM for a few months now, and everything has been awesome until a few days ago.
I lost all data connectivity.
2G, 3G, WiFi, same exact symptoms. Every app that uses data throws the error in its own specific manner, but always some variant of "No data connection" or "Network unavailable" or "Check your connection" etc. etc.
On the handshake level, everything seems normal. I can connect to WiFi networks and it does the usual "Obtaining IP Address..." --> "Connected." I get the WiFi logo in the notification bar. And I have the 3G logo unless I turn cell data off, and it's up/down arrows even flash a little right after I turn cell data on.
It broke almost a week ago, so you can be sure I've tried many WiFi networks and many cell towers and rebooted many times and taken the battery out... all the usual stuff. There is something seriously wrong. Help!
Thanks,
Mike
I'd try a master reset. If that doesn't change anything, call your service provider and see if the phone can be swapped for another under warranty. Did this with a Droid 1 a few months back with Verizon w/o any problems.
Good luck!
Edit: I just noticed you are running a mod on that phone. Have you run Fix Permissions? Sometimes that irons out bugs that appear. I'd get with the developers and see what they say. One thing you could try is to re-install that mod. Be sure to wipe all data when you do. It'll be like starting over; but, starting over with the mod installed.
Good luck!
Back up and wipe the phone and reinstall the rom
Master reset did the trick. Unfortunately I didn't have great backup tools, and I couldn't even install new ones due to lack of connectivity (and apk's not always available). Saved my sms history at least, by copying the database to sd and back, thanks to root.
Really appreciate the noob help culture. (must say, it's weird being one, as I'm generally proficient except that I joined the Android world by purchasing a pre-rooted/modded phone)
I am sort of at a loss. My Surround is losing it's celluar data settings every time I turn it off and boot it back up. The signal bars do no E, or G, or H or anything else. If I am not connected to wifi there is no data at all. Speaking of wi-fi, it also does not maintain most of my saved networks. The only one is does is the one at work.
I first ran into this after Mango RTM upgraded to final. I was having other issues (e.g. music search not working) and blamed it on the upgrade. At the time I WAS able to use the HTC connection setup to configure the cellular data connection. I finally did a complete wipe on it a couple of weeks ago; I flashed back to the original ROM release and let it spend the next couple of hours updating back to Mango. Everything seemed fine but in the last couple of days I have found the problem has returned. To make matters worse, I can't even seem to download the HTC connection setup app anymore.
I have tried multiple soft resets, battery pulls, booting up without the SIM and then booting up with it, etc. Anyone have any ideas on what is causing this and how to fix it? The phone is pretty useless as a smartphone without a data connection.

Try that rom :] You need to do a RSPL / HSPL thing first;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1195647
I suggest downgrading to a lower firmware and then doing so :] Mine does it from time to time aswell, Usually gets fixed when I--
1; get a call
2; turn wifi on or off
3; airplane mode
But even if it doesnt show the network type, It always works

Thanks. 1, 2, and 3 definitely don't fix it. It might be worth going with the custom ROM just so that it's unlocked and saves me from having to pay for the official unlock down the road sometime. One other thing is that around the same time I started getting some screen wonkiness. I would be trying to type something and the keyboard kept minimizing back to the bottom every few characters. Mainly only affected text messages though.
I decided to call AT&T to see if they might be able to force a refresh of the data settings. Since I've called them before on the problem the guy thinks it best to replace the phone. Guess we'll see what happens. May still do the ROM you suggested once I get it though.
Bleeping bleep bleep phone! Someone in a different thread suggested HTC might be able to help with an issue like this. Only solution they gave was a hard reset so I finally did that on I think it was Thurs or Fri. Everything was dandy at first. Fast forward to today and I notice this evening that my phone had lost it's settings again and once more I can't get them back. I also notice that it ate my saved wifi networks again.
I have the refurb device AT&T sent and I suppose I will go ahead and try to use it. I just hate having to set everything up...again. It's really getting old. Could my SIM card be to blame?
Haha. Going to be attending the local WP Insider Circle thing next week. Maybe I'll get lucky and win a new phone.
I have double and triple checked the APN settings. No luck. I feel like a complete retard, but why cant this phone connect to the network?
It doesn't even appear to try. Any suggestions?
I haven't a clue why, but I've been told multiple times that the infuse won't be able to connect to Tmobile data services in any manner.
I'm in the same boat, when did you notice this? I ask because mine just started doing this yesterday. Here's a brief synopsis of what I've done:
- I was running stock GB 2.3.6, from the Heimdall One-Click...had no issues for weeks (only had it a few weeks); once I realized that I can't get anything higher than EDGE speeds due to the hardware requirements, I went ahead and purchased the GN. So, my neighbor told me that she went to T-Mo (same phone) and the gentlemen 'input some codes' etc etc and she now had 3G (can't verify, I didn't grab her phone). I had an idea that he went into the phone testing mode (by doing the *#*#INFO#*#*) and maybe changed some of the network settings in there. So I figured I would give it a shot before I put it up for sale since my GN was coming today. So I went in and tried a few things, all to no avail....and then realized that I had NO data at all.
So at this point I did a factory reset (no luck), flashed the firmware/modem/etc from the Heimdall one-click, reset the APN settings (multiple times)....everything that I know to do with it....and STILL no data. But I can place calls, get texts, etc with no issue.
What's strange is after I flashed the stock GB rom, I went back into the testing mode (I guess that's what you call it???) and was checking a few things:
- if I run the ping test, it comes back null (no surprise) BUT it also lists 'GSM Service: In Service' and 'Network Type: EDGE'...it does show GPRS as disconnected.
I tried my SIM in an unlocked iPhone and it didn't have data connection. But I also put my roommates T-Mo SIM in the Infuse and it didn't have data either. I haven't had a chance to see if my SIM works (data wise) in the GN, because I haven't gotten it yet.
Any ideas on what to do?
**EDIT**
For some reason the data began to work about an hour after I posted this. Maybe the phone knew I was asking the experts and it had no where to hide?? Either way The_Joe I would try to maybe do a factory reset and if that doesn't work, to try to re-install the ROM/OS again.
Almost since I got my nexus 5 last year it has been loosing its connection about two times per day. It does this in three different ways.
1. total loss. The little outline of a triangle appears and a notification that I have lost my connection. Clicking the notification opens the manual selection of networks. I select the network and all is fine.
2. full connection with an exclamation mark. solves it self by waiting for a while.
3. full connection with H/3G but when trying to access the internet there is no connection. This one is really weird. The solution here is top open the quick settings, select flight mode, which greys out the connectivity triangle but keeps the H or 3G part white on top of the greyed out triangle that has a slash over it. About a minute later the H or 3G disappears and I can turn off aeroplane mode. This either restores the connection or jumps to problem one.
First I thought its a hardware problem, but since I don't want to part with my phone I never sent it back to google for fixing.
When android 5.1 was released I installed that manually and surprisingly did not have any problems at all after this. But then I went abroad and using the same sim connected to a local network in the country I went to. It took 4 tries to join one of those networks. When I then came home this problem started again.
My thought is that there is some setting that should be there that stayed from my trip. I have tried clearing all caches from the storage in settings and the dalvik cache. No difference. I'm not to keen on re-installing my phone again. So my question is, has this happened to anyone else? Did you solve it? Is there something I can do to remove all previous settings for the network to make it work again? Other suggestions?
This happens to me, at least 4 times a day for me, it has only been doing it since I installed 5.1 on my nexus 5, which was a brand new one from Google since I smashed my screen and they just gave me a new one, I'm in the UK btw, not sure where you are but it does take forever to connect to mobile network when I turn wifi off too.
I constantly lose connection at my house going from E to H+ to LTE throughout the day

I'm in Spain.
For me it happened before 5.1 as well. But 5.1 fixed it temporarily, until I travelled with my phone. Have you had to switch to another network with that phone?
For some reason when manually looking for a network it seems to be running on a timeout function because it takes me 60 seconds to get the list, always. This feels like a very antique solution, they should just populate the list as a network is found like wifi does it.
Hi everyone.
I hope someone can help me please. I have an old Moto G3 phone I want to give to someone so I’ve uninstalled everything personal off the phone and then done a factory reset.
Now for some reason I cannot get it back on to my home wifi to finish setting up the phone. Initially, I selected my network and then input the password but all it returned was ‘Authentication Problem’. It then stopped even being able to find my SSID on the available networks but eventually it showed up again but still doesn’t connect. I originally bought the phone second hand from ebay a few years ago and it had been factory reset by the seller. It isn’t rooted or locked to a network. I’ve never had an issue connecting it to my network before tonight.
However, the phone has been turned off in a drawer for several months. About 7 weeks ago I had to install a new Virgin Media Hub-3 modem as the previous modem was dying of old age so tonight was my first time attempting to connect this phone to the new modem. I normally have 11 different devices connected to my wifi at any one time and all of them work perfectly.
I’ve tried absolutely everything I can think of. My other devices all see and are connected to the network completely fine. I’m literally sitting within 2 feet of the modem and it’s showing a very strong signal.
I have tried the WPS button, WPS Pin, rebooting the phone, rebooting the modem, resetting the network settings, rerunning the factory reset, making sure the modem is set to broadcast the network name, inputting the SSID and password manually. I even tried disabling the modem firewall in case that was blocking the phone and I must have manually typed in the wifi password over a dozen times which I keep noted down and I know is correct. Basically I’ve run out of ideas. As the phone isn’t locked I also tried my the sim from my current phone to test it. Although it can make calls no problem, I still can’t get on to my home wifi.
I’ve tried turning off the wifi and shutting down a couple of my other devices and then turning them back on and they reconnected to the wifi straight away without a problem. I can’t believe the problem is with the modem as it’s only 7 weeks old and everything else is working perfectly on it.
I’ve also tried googling the problem but still no luck so far.
The phone is on Android 6.0.1, it’s a Motorola Moto G3 with a 16GB microSD card but has no sim card installed.
