Your ability to get 3g will depend on if the phone supports the frequency american 3g is on. A lot of foreign phones don't
I had a hard time getting to cell me a data package too for my phone since I bought it unlocked. The a holes act like "if its not ours we cant guarantee it will work!" then they wouldn't cell me a data package except the crappy medianet one (I should have been dishonest and taken it, would saved $15 a month for the same service). Called back, got a different rep, gave him the IMEI number, told him it was a PDA, went smoothly.
Is anyone here using a non-AT&T branded HTC 8X on AT&T with everything working on 2G and 3G? I don't care about 4G for this particular case.
Does Voice, SMS, MMS in both directions, and data work?
Does AT&T detect it as a smartphone and require the right data plan?
Thanks.
Edit: I decided to buy both a Verizon 8X and a T-Mobile 8X to test.
After 4 days the Verizon was detected
T-Mobile one has still not been detected. Will update if it does.

I'm pretty sure you would be able to get 3G with any unlocked 8X but only certain models have LTE radios. You will probably need to add an APN to get you're Data/MMS working 100% and I at least had an issue with tethering (not sure if it is hardware or software related) but other than that you should be golden.
Although obvious, I may as well say it. It should be an unlocked phone.
I'm asking for people with personal experience because Windows Phone is such a pain with APN configuration. I have tried a couple unlocked Verizon phones but they won't work with MMS no matter what I do. There is the generic unbranded GSM version, but that one is expensive compared to the branded ones. Also people are complaining that that HTC connection setup utility is broken on the 8X so I would just really like to know if anyone has actually tested it. I don't want to get the AT&T version because they recognize that one and require a data plan and I don't want one on this line.

Yes. Voice, SMS, MMS and data worked fine. AT&T see it just fine and actually, you will probably see it listed in MyATT after you put the SIM in.
My phone is a C625a which has LTE however, an international unlocked version or a Verizon version will work but only certain models will get LTE because of the radios as mentioned above.

Is your phone a non-AT&T 8X? Or is it the AT&T branded one?
They are detecting it as an 8X?
Like my thread title says, I want to know if anyone is using a non-AT&T branded 8X. I DO NOT want them to know what phone it is because if they recognize it then they will require a "correct" smartphone data plan which I do not want.
I tried a Verizon Lumia 822 but I could not get MMS to work at all. They even removed the internet and MMS apn configuration pages built into WP8. I could use the Nokia app for setting the APN, but even with the correct MMS settings incoming MMS would not work. Outgoing would work just fine and everything else worked.
I just want to know if anyone has a non-AT&T 8X where everything on 3G works and that AT&T doesn't detect it.

I'm sorry that my questions were too confusing for you.
Maybe having it in a list will make it easier for people to respond
Questions:
1. Do you have a non-AT&T branded HTC 8X
2. Does this HTC 8X work 100% with calls, SMS, MMS in both directions, and data connectivity on 3G
3. Does AT&T detect this as a smartphone (Which will force you to have a smartphone dataplan)?

Simply using a SIM card does not mean AT&T knows what kind of phone it is. AT&T does not detect all smartphones as smartphones. They can detect all AT&T smartphones correctly and they have the ability to detect some non-AT&T smartphones, but not all. It's mostly the very popular unlocked models such as the Nexus models. Most other phones aren't in there database and just appear as unknown.
For instance they do not have the ability of detecting the ATIV S. I have one of those running on one of my lines with a $10 unlimited data plan. It doesn't support AT&T LTE, though, but that isn't an issue for the line it is on.
I would buy another ATIV S for this line, but it's too expensive at around $500. There are many 8Xs available for around $250 and I want to see if anyone is using any of those models without a correct data plan on AT&T.

Don't give up. Since you are the only one here did this. Go to your Myatt account page and see which phone is listed there for your line. If it listed as unknown or generic phone, it does not know you are using a Smartphone. If it listed as you are using a 8x, it means AT&T knows your phone is a smartphone. That's what OP wants.
As for OP, unlike WP7, WP8 lets you add data and MMS APNs easily.

I ended up buying both a Tmobile 8X and a Verizon 8X. AT&T hasn't detected either and it's been 3 days. The Tmobile one fully works and the Verizon one can't send MMS.
Verizon removed the ability to set a MMS APN manually and the HTC Connection Setup app doesn't work on the Verizon one. It works on the Tmobile one but I believe it configures the phones using the Phone APN for both Internet and MMS. You don't have access to the Phone APN unless you have a smartphone data plan, but thankfully Tmobile didn't screw around too much with the firmware and I was able to manually enter the connection information for both Internet and MMS.
That was interesting. On AT&T 8x, you have two buttons, one to add data APN and one to add MMC APN.

Yeah the T-Mobile has both Internet and MMS APN options, but on Verizon the MMS APN option was removed with the Portico update and was present but didn't work (didn't save anything) before Portico.
The Verizon Lumia 822 had both internet and MMS options pre-portico and they both saved what was entered but post-portico they were both gone. Nokia has an APN configuration app though that works post-Portico. Unfortunately even with MMS configured the 822 just won't receive MMS. When an MMS comes in it says "Message not found". Sending MMS from the 822 works fine on AT&T though.
Basically Verizon ****s up MMS so you can't fully utilize a Verizon phone on a GSM carrier.
My T-Mobile 8X mic doesn't work when set to speakerphone though so I will need to get it replaced. I found a few people online with the same issue but they found no solution other than replacement.
The 8X is such a mess.
I guess Verizon will use its CDMA network to deliver MMS. So, it is a problem for them to expose the MMS settings for GSM which may hinder the MMS on CDMA network.
I am traveling to Canada, will use Rogers or other GSM network.
Can I simply switch sim card to use my phone on those network?
I only need to make phone call, and occasionally texting. I do NOT need data. I have seen people here discussion changing APN, are those discussion purely about how to use data?
I live in Canada, have a Verizon S3. I use it without switching sim cards without any problems. I do however have Canada calling on my plan. You can ad Canada to your plan for 15$ you'll get 1000 min I don't know about txt I'm on an old plan so it's somewhat different than what you might get. Try calling costumer service first b4 you go switching sims.

I am not on Verizon, I use this phone for Pageplus. This probably is not a option for me.
I just went to Ireland and was able to switch the sim and use it as a gsm phone. Only issue is, unless you have it rooted, you can't change the APN, so you'll get calls and texts fine, but you won't get data at all. If you Root your phone though, then you can dl some simple APN changing app that will allow you to put in whatever custom settings for whatever carrier your new sim is with. Hope that helps.
Thanks! This is exactly what I want.
I have rooted my phone, but I will not change APN, since I only use call and text.

Hi,
I have a fairly recent HTC One Mini which I bought off a friend so I have no proof of purchase for it.
It was working fine with calls / texts / data apart from a few texts from iPhone devices.
I removed my number from iCloud on all devices and phoned up apple for them to remove me from their phone list.
Phone was still working fine and I could text / phone / use data no bother.
Then one day it decided to stop receiving and sending any texts and phone calls.
The data is still working fine and connects to the network.
I went to my service provider who provided me with a new sim card. I tried the sim card in a different old phone and it works fine with texts and calls.
I put this sim in my HTC One Mini and it still does not work with texts and calls but connects to the network fine and works fine with data…
Any ideas on why this might be?
I was going to try and downgrade the software to 4.3.1 or something but after reading all the different steps I have to go through I might just end up getting another phone and trying to fix this whenever I actually have some time to loose on this!
If anyone has any ideas as to whether it might be software / hardware issue it would be great… seems like an odd one since I can use the data fine but the rest won't work?!
Cheers in advance for any suggestions...

Yes I have.
I am starting to believe the phone might have been reported stolen / blacklisted as it seems to do that for others too after some more research… however when I check on a free imei checks websites the imei seems fine...
I think you're running Stock Rom without any modifications, am I right? Did you tried a SIM by another provider yet?

Yes It is the original ROM and no modifications.
I have a feeling the person I purchased it from might have been nice for a few weeks and then decided to report it stolen and make it blacklisted however when I check online it is not a blocked IMEI so I am unsure what to do…
Would there be a fix to this or would I just need to sell it for parts / use without the network?
Any help appreciated, thanks in advance

Hi guys,
I've been having this problem with my N5.
Its a d820 model, unlocked and rooted.
I have no signal, cant register to the network either.
I can use wifi with no problem too.
I changed the micro sim card with other carriers, same issue. I asked for a new micro sim to my carrier too (not cut), but still getting the same problem.
It's worth mentioning that the micro sim works flawlessly. Im using it everyday on an HTC One S and signal and data works perfectly.
When I first get the simcard on the N5, it asks for a reboot, after it comes back up, it shows strong signal, but I can't make any call or receive, no messages either.
After a few minutes, the signal goes down and it shows only emergency calls.
Going into mobile networks and searching for my carrier takes quite some time, but no matter how many times I try to select my carrier,it always comes back with not able to register in the network.
I did a factory reset, and went back to stock, and then performed the system updates to 4.4.4.
I flashed a couple of radios as well, but no luck.
The IMEI shows well, and its the same that shows on the box, so I guess no problems there with a corrupt IMEI.
Has anyone else had any problem like this? Any suggestions?
I've been reading some threads here, and I still have to try a different kernel/ROM, but if anyone else knows of a similar situation, I would appreciate any suggestions.
May be it has something to do wid preferred network...
If u use 3g go to dialpad
Type
*#*#4636#*#* phone info
Select modem as wcdma only...
If u use lte select lte only... See if this works
I think I already tried that, but cant remember for sure
Will give it a shot, thanks
Is the phone second hand?
Have you checked if the IMEI is blocked by the network?
sounds like you bought a used phone that has been blacklisted. if blacklisted, your phone wont work on any US carrier, and many Canadian carriers.
Yes its a second hand phone, and I don't know if it is blacklisted on USA, but Im in South America, so that shouldnt be a problem
And there are no carriers here working with N5 so they cant blacklist the IMEI either
(This doesnt mean that the phone doesnt work here, actually, my wife has another N5 that works like a charm here)

the carriers dont have to work with the n5 to blacklist it. in other words, they can blacklist any phone that connects to their network. as soon as you connect to the network, they know your imei and other info about your phone. anyways, they blacklist your imei, so when your phone tries to connect, it cant. the agreement that carriers have in the US and Canada, could possibly be for all of the americas, or, in south america, they could have their own blacklist.
---------- Post added at 12:25 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:23 PM ----------
googling, i found that carriers worldwide are sharing blacklists.
The GSMA, an international association of wireless carriers, also keeps a database that wireless carriers worldwide could check to prevent stolen phones from being reactivated on their networks.

yup, thats the best thing to do. the people that first answer the phone, customer service, probably wont be able to help, maybe someone in tech. or, use this website to check(there art other sites as well).. http://swappa.com/esn
Well I just checked. IMEI not blacklisted on my carrier, also checked with swappa, not blacklisted either.
I used the *#*#4636#*#* to select wcdma as well as other options there, but still no go.
Also, under Mobile network settings, changed the preferred network type to LTE, 3G and 2G, but no luck
Tried Choose automatically the network, but still getting the message that its unable to register to the network right now and that I should try again later
I guess Im left with flashing some other ROM/kernel to see if it helps, unless someone has any other suggestions

If the problem is wid radio flashing a different rom won't matter ..
Have u tried flashing a factory image ?
I know flashing a new ROM wont help with radio, but I've seen that using *#*#4636#*#*, going into phone information and then Select Radio Band, gives me an error and force closes.
I've seen some threads about that, and someone saying that it was working on a CM ROM, so I was thinking of trying that in order to be able to select the radio band and see if that helps.
About the factory image, yes, I used the google images to go back to stock, and then performed the system updates.
Well I flashed Slim Rom, and was able to get into *#*#4636#*#* to change radio band. Tried them all, no change.
Played around with the preferred networks and no luck either.
I'm officially out of ideas, but I'll keep digging around to see what I can find.
Any suggestions welcome.
Also, I know that there is a known issue with the GPS signal on some Nexus 5, and there are a few videos on Youtube showing how to fix it (basically opening the back of the phone, and sticking a piece of paper under the connector).
Does anyone know if there is something similar happening with the radio? Does anyone have a photo of the phone showing which part would be the antenna?
One additional thing I noticed.
If I switch, or just take out and reinsert the micro sim, the phone asks for a reboot. After doing that, when the phone boots up, I see I have network (full bars), going into mobile operators, I can see my carrier, and I can register too. But I cant make or receive any calls or messages.
During this 10 minutes that I have this sort of fake signal, if I go into *#*#4636#*#* and phone info, I can see my carrier, but it doesn't show my phone number. Weird.
Lg nexus 5 network issue
