Hello,
I just received my shield portable from Nvidia due to an RMA. however it's running some stripped down version of android. The model number says "Roth Diagnostics" version is 4.2.1 but there is no play store or any way to install apps, other than the shield store, which is very limited. I don't even see a location to put my gmail account to buy games. Has anyone else had this problem?

Nope, I can't even use this RMA thingy
Seems like a testing version of android (Roth Diagnostic, duh...), I guess it's pure stock without Nvidia's apps and frameworks.
Is your bootloader unlocked?
If it is, you can flash a firmware yourself.
The bootloader was locked. I tried to unlock, but it didn't give the option, as the drivers were different. Anyways the story has a happy ending, Nvidia gave me an advanced RMA, and shipped me another shield, which is up and running.

Hi all. I received mine in the mail today. Lots I like such as size weight build and speaker quality. Camera pretty decent too.
As I was setting up I noticed there was a flash of upgrade available but when I went to settings nothing happened on update. I swear I remember seeing to do the update there was a thread on how to do it but could not find it. Anyone remember?
Also I tried to side load the hbogo.apk from my atrix phone. Installs fine but then comes up with not compatible with this device. Am I missing something here as well. I'll keep reading.
I'm coming from the Asus TF.

Download and install Samsung Kies onto you pc and then connect your GT7+ to the pc with kies running. It will detect the GT7+ and tell you if you need to update the firmware and give you teh option to update it. Easiest way I know how to do it as I don't think updating is supported over wifi or 3g.
As for your app it sounds like it does not support Honeycomb and that is why it won't run. Your other devices are more than likely either running Gingerbread or Froyo.
sdelliott31 after you manage to upgrade your software on 7+ would you please come back to us with some information about the new firmware.
apparently it should be a 147MB file size bringing version EKL1 Android 3.2 Honeycomb and its for Wi-Fi US model.
can you confirm this? or anyone else?

I can't confirm the size but mine updated to the EKL1 update. I also had a pop up saying there was an update available the first time I turned on the device (a new one as I returned my original for SOD).
So I sent my tablet back to Asus a few weeks ago because it wouldn't turn on/charge. They replaced the main board and sent it back.
Everything was smooth sailing until I discovered that the tablet was running an old android version. I checked for updates in the "About Tablet" section of settings and received the message: "Internet connection error or the server is busy. Please wait a moment and try again" - I've waited three weeks.
My tablet previously had a US SKU, but now runs on WW with the new main board.
I decided that since I can't OTA, I may as well unlock my tablet and get rid of this piece of **** stock ROM. Alas, I'm also unable to unlock my device or connect to the device tracker. I suspect all these problems are related.
I know I can update manually, but I didn't pay good money for this tablet to use workarounds.
Has anyone experienced this problem before? If so, how did you go about fixing it?
Any help or advice would be appreciated! I would rather not send my tablet back to the service center again.

I receive the same error when checking for a system update. My tablet is completely stock and was not send for rma and also is on the latest android version. The system update screen shows the last successful update check was on 15/9.
I'm experiencing this as I type this. I haven't RMAed my tablet or anything, bone stock. For some reason it gives me that error now. I have a feeling its a issue on Asus end.

Don't know where you are actually located and where the service center that handled your RMA is, but if you are in the US, they screwed up. If you are in the US and running a WW firmware, you won't get OTA updates.
If you are in a WW region, you can try to clear cache and data and then force close CMClient and DMClient under Apps > All, reboot and try the system update again.
Not being able to unlock after having the main board replaced is unfortunately a very common issue.
There may be some hope: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2339495

Another possible reason for not getting updates is the servers in Taiwan do not have the new MB information matching the serial number of the tablet. That will cause updates to not register. Try connecting to the Asus device tracker website but as you stated it does not work. If that does not work then that is pretty much your proof. Only way to fix this is to have someone at the HQ in Taiwan update the server there with the proper information. After that if the website works then you should get updates again and unlock the tablet. If you contact phone support you will be wasting your time since they can't fix the problem and will say send it back for rma.
Look up the thread on the device tracker not working. You will find answers there if the servers do not have the proper info.
Good luck.

I needed to RMA my tablet again for an unrelated screen problem anyway, so I figured I'd try and get them to fix the device tracker/unlock issue at the same time. I called the service center (Australia) and told them that they messed up on the last RMA and now I couldn't use the device tracker anymore.I physically attached a letter explaining the issue (to the screen of my tablet) and away to the service center it went.
15 days of RMA later, I was reunited with my tablet and now everything works: updates (for the time being), device tracker and the unlock tool.
The fact that they don't just update the server information when they replace the mother board is fairly stupid and inefficient on their part. Oh well, I'm just happy I can use my tablet to its potential now.
Thanks for the help and information everyone!
Hello everyone,
I recently got an Nvidia Shield portable from work, but I've been having strange issues with it since I got it.
The device originally came with an old android version (I think it was jellybean.) My guess is that it was an internal build that was installed, since the device itself was being used for demo purposes. Either way, the device worked fine with this build, but I tried to update it using a recovery image from the developer website and it stopped working correctly after that. Google Play crashes whenever I try to use it, the settings app crashes whenever I try to access the "apps" section, I have no access to /sdcard/ via ADB, I can't root the device because I get an error that says "Cannot find system or data partition, aborting...", and some apps just don't work correctly. I currently have update 101 installed on the device which is Kit Kat. I can't update it past that because the device gets stuck in a boot loop. Also, this console doesn't look exactly like the retail versions. It is slightly different.
Here are some pictures of the device (Sorry, I'm new and can't quite post links yet):
i.imgur(dot)com/kL8AJnP.jpg
i.imgur(dot)com/0Mq1eSd.jpg
Notice how it's missing the plate on the bottom side. The buttons also don't light up. It is also missing an accessible SD card slot (it's blocked off) and it has 30GB of internal storage.
Can anyone help me figure this out? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!
Definitely not Shield as we know it...
I think you should message this to Nvidia support and let them know...
Maybe someone else tried to make Nvidia Shield Portable 2 =]

Well my guess is that it's either a demo console or a beta version. I got it directly from Nvidia, so maybe that can provide some insight into what it actually is.
I got mine directly from Nvidia Russia as contest prize, and only strange thing about mine is different Serial Number (cant register it on Nvidia site).
But yours is just... wow.
p/s
Let us know what support says. It's wery interesting case.

Yeah, support wasn't very helpful. They just had me try doing a factory reset, but of course that didn't work. They were supposed to email me about it, but they never got back to me.
Pretty much what the title says...
I have a Shield Tablet and I tried the system update, and it won't let me get 6.0... it says I have the latest update which is at 5.1.1 anyone know what can this be and how I can get aorund it?
and lastly, I put in a request for the 6.0.1 with vulkan, but I'm curious why I can't get 6.0... is this a known problem?

Is your device rooted and whatnot? If so sometimes the update feature is affected and you might have to remedy that first. If not, it could be a roll out time line situation serial number order type of thing. I don't own this device yet personally but tomorrow when mine shows up I'll make sure and see if I have an update available(Nj).
no, it's a stock device and I got a while back... Would be nice to push it to the device via adb maybe? and it's a great device. you'll love it. Price is great, build quality is decent and it's very powerful!
I have the LTE model in the US and no update for me either.. I am not sure why this one is taking so long after the WiFi version. Every other update was released at the same time..

Hard to answer without knowing what device you have but I am going to throw a guess and answer to go with it.
My guess, you have the US LTE version.
Answer: The US LTE ROM includes AT&T software and is also released via the AT&T network. NVIDIA had said the US LTE ROM takes several additional weeks from release for the Rest of The World version to become available when 4.0 was originally announced. That clock was most likely reset when the first 4.0 version was pulled and a new version (thus restarting the clock) was released on the 18th.
As promised when it arrived I checked for the update and sure enough it was there. I do hope we can help figure out what your issue is.
Just chasing some Advice.
I purchased an Nvidia shield Tablet some time ago from Gumtree in box with factory charger etc basically perfect condition.
Unfortunately I was not aware of the recall at the time and have since stumbled over the fact that mine is effected by the recall.
I contacted Nvidia with the serial number and they have advised that the recall has already been claimed for this tablet thus they cannot reissue another replacement and will offer no assistance at all.
They say that the previous owner has obviously done the wrong thing and not disposed of it correctly so i need to take it up with the previous owner.
I am wanting to update it and obviously don't want the kill switch to be activated.
Could you recommend a Rom that I could use to minimise the risk of the kill switch being activated as it seems the current rom I am using is preventing the kill switch from happening.
Plan on replacing the battery just as a precaution ASAP
Any advice would be appreciated
Thanks In Advance
Looks like I have the same issue I don't have the K1, I have a P1761W. I tried Stock+ 5.4.1 Shield K1, but it boot loops after updating chrome or installing some other apps.
Anyone know of a rom that will work on the original shields?
I don't have the links but I can at least point you in the right direction. First you need to keep it from connecting online, have it unlock bootloader, then install lineage os 15.1. You can use custom roms without a problem as they don't have the kill switch. Alternatively, you can install twrp and flash the last firmware, and then and this is important flash the nomoreota.zip(google it). That way you'll retain the last firmware without the kill switch.
