I recently purchased a note edge that I was told was unlocked. I was going to use it with Verizon, but it was not unlocked.
I contacted AT&T, but they would not help me unlock it because the person that I bought it from had apparently not paid their bill.
Does anyone know if the phone will work with Verizon if it is unlocked, and if I use a pay site, which ones work, and are the quickest? If it wont, I am going to put it on SWAPPA.
I eventually want to root it.
Thanks for your help.

1st off, buying a phone that the seller didn't pay off, is bad news, they can block the ESN and it will never be unlocked.
2nd, This is an AT&T version, which cannot be rooted, no DEV wants to go through the problem of unlocking the bootloader.
3rd, you needed to post this in the Q&A forum, this is for Development only (Which will probably never happen)
4th, I used a seller on eBay to unlock mine, but he no longer unlocks AT&T phones
5th, Verizon is a CDMA carrier and AT&T is a GSM carrier. With todays dual-radio phones, it might still work, but not sure.
6th, SWAPPA will not let you sell a phone where the EMIE isn't clean. (Try eBay)
Hope some of this helps.

All you to do is go (my apologizes it was supposed to say go not "gay". If I offended anyone I'm sorry) on eBay and buy an unlock code, it will cost you about $20. As for using it on Verizon, I don't think that's possible because AT&T phones don't have the required cdma radios

He would get LTE, but doubt the phone itself would work. LTE is a GSM technology, So for CDMA carriers to have LTE, they would need a sim card and GSM radio also. Therefore the introduction of the dual radio phones.
Verizon:
FREQUENCIES AND DATA TYPE
CDMA Data - 1x and EVDO Rev0/RevA;
2G GSM: GSM850, GSM900, DCS1800, PCS1900;
2G CDMA: CDMA800, USPCS1900;
3G UMTS: B1(2100), B2(1900), B5(850), B8(900);
3G CDMA: BC0(800), BC1(1900);
4G FDD LTE: B4(AWS), B13(700)***
AT&T:
FREQUENCIES AND DATA TYPE
2G GSM: GSM850, GSM900, DCS1800, PCS1900;
3G UMTS: B1(2100), B2(1900), B5(850);
4G FDD LTE: B1(2100), B2(1900), B3(1800), B4(AWS), B5(850), B7(2600), B17(700), B20(800);
So where ever Verizon is using Band 4, LTE should not be a problem.
I managed to get an unlock Code.
I got my unlock code, and it worked. The phone said that it was successfully unlocked.
I added the Verizon APN settings, but it still did not work correctly. When I tried to dial out, it said "Emergency calls only".
It works great on AT&T, but I am still grandfathered in on the Verizon unlimited plan.
Any suggestions? Here is the link I used. http://apn-settings.com/verizon-4g-lte-apn-settings-detailed-configuration-steps/
All help is greatly appreciated.

You can't on At&t devices, the only way is to call At&t and ask them to do it! Also, if your esn is blocked you'll probably never get it unlocked.

Just curious if possible when you unlocked the GSM radio on the Sprint or Verizon TP2. Is it possible to get all features i.e. 3G..etc to work on Tmobile?
sorry if this is a dumb question but considering the price difference between the TMO TP2 and Verizon it would be much cheaper to buy it and just get it unlocked for TMO.
The Verizon version is as easy to unlock as calling Verizon and asking for the unlock code (they'll redirect you to another department that deals with that type of thing).
After that, you should be able to use it on both AT&T and TMobile, or any other GSM provider.. but you won't get 3G speeds, only 2G/EDGE, since the TP2 doesn't include the 2100Mhz band that TMobile and AT&T use for their 3G.

Actually, AT&T uses 850 and 1900 for 3G, T-Mobile uses 1700 and 2100.

Really? My bad, I was taught that they both utilized 2100Mhz.. if you're correct, and I believe you are, then the TP2 (and even the storm, which supports 850/1900Mhz) can utilize 3G on AT&T?
The CDMA Touch Pro2 will get 3G in Europe:
HSPA/WCDMA:
Europe/Asia: 900/2100 MHz
Up to 2 Mbps up-link and 7.2 Mbps down-link speeds
(found it here: http://www.htcwiki.com/page/HTC+Touch+Pro2+(CDMA))
T-Mobile has some weird-ass thing going on with their 3G that you need 1700 and 2100 on your phone, so you can count that out.
Basically, you can unlock it. The only problem you'll have is no 3G. The big question... will you be able to make it roam on Sprint?

It is that easy to get the code....but you need to be a Verizon customer for 60 days or more (probably to stop stuff like this, if I had to guess). I really don't know what they would do if you bought it outright though. If worst comes to worst, you can get it unlocked somewhere for like $10.

This is what I learned today, read post 21 gents:
Will the i9020A version of the Nexus S (which is I think the model sold by Koodo Mobile in Canada) get 3G connection on the AWS spectrum used by Mobilicity? (I believe this should be the same as TMobile)?
Also, is there such a thing as a carrier locked Nexus S? I want to buy the Koodo Mobile Nexus S for $425 off contract (cheapest I can find), but I want to use it on the Mobilicity network. Will I need to carrier unlock the device somehow? I can't seem to find any "unlock Nexus S" sources, so I assume this is unnecessary?
The more I look into this issue, the more confused I get. A lot of places say the Nexus S is quad-band GSM + AWS, so doesn't that mean I should be able to get 3G from anywhere? The FAQ on this forum states that the original Nexus S can only get 3G speeds on TMobile's AWS band--conversely, does that then mean that the new "AT&T" Nexus S phones can't get 3G speeds on AWS? i.e. Do I need to buy a phone from an AWS carrier to get 3G?

I am in canada, just bought NS finally, that too from Koodo, and it is an Unlocked Rogers/AT&T/Bell/Telus/Fido compatible version. Not to mention it will work with any other bands in the world except the situation Wind/Mobilicity have.
Their phone system is not backwards compatible, they came out in the market just about 2 years ago, they started off with 3G/3.5G straight where Rogers initially started with Standard, moved on to Edge/2G/2.5G and upgraded themselves to 3G and eventually 3.5G, same goes for Telus/Bell/Fido.
If you purchase any of Wind/Mobilicity phone, they will be compatible with any other careers in the world, but you will not get 3G if tried on UMTS. Their phones will only work on the AWS 3G frequency. Which in case means if you bought wind/mobilicity compatible phone, you will get 2G/Edge on Rogers.
Other way around - Koodo phone with Wind/Mobilicity SIM - will give you Wind/Mobilicity Away network only, means it is useless for you. The only phone in canadian market works with Rogers and Wind 3G frequency is Nokia N8 which is a Pentaband phone. Nexus S on the other hand is a Quadband phone, and is made specifically for the career, thats why we have 3/4 different versions, AWS, UMTS, 4G to work with Sprint in US and i guess there is one other model for India and China as well.
All the Nexus S variants come unlocked, outright or on contract, as its a Google's own baby and they don't lock it except the bootloader.
I bought mine with Koodo from Future Shop as it is listed as not an outright sale on Koodo's website, but FS and BBY do sell them outright. It is unlocked out of the box, just pop your SIM in and you are good to go assuming you are going to go with Rogers/Bell/Telus/Koodo/Fido.
My two cents, go with Wind, they offer you wind tab, pay 350 + tax and use the phone to pay the rest of the money with wind tab and you are set if you really want Wind compatible phone.
I had the same problem and dilemma like you as I had a Desire Z with Bell and wanted to use it on Wind, ended up trading it with G2 from T-Mobile and used Wind mobile 3G network and Rogers 2G/Edge network up until now(I am with Rogers and have got a better deal with them for data, so no need to carry two phones on me anymore )
Hope this helps.

Got my FIDO Razr HD. Rogers SIM = all is good. AT&T sim = asks for unlock code, which i buy online.
After entering code, phone appears to do a factory reset. During the reboot, a box pops up:
"SIM not allowed MM #3"
Now the phone permits "Emergency Calls Only" with the AT&T sim. Rogers SIM = still good.
When I put AT&T sim into my other phone (HTC desire) it works fine on roaming (rogers network). So I know sim + signal is fine.
Don't understand this error message.
Did I mess up the unlock?
advice appreciated, thanks.
Do you have another Canadian SIM you can try? Bell/Telus etc?

Thanks for the replies everyone. to answer the questions:
1) i don't have any other sims right now: just rogers + ATT. Next time i am w/ friends I will ask to borrow telus/bell microsim.
2) they were regular sims that were cut down.
3) haven't had a chance to visit USA since posting topic- but when i do, i will test both cards and also visit an AT&T shop to bug them about it.
Is sim corrupted? I don't think so because it works fine in HTC desire. But I guess trying a new one will prove or disprove.

OOI, is AT&T seen as a much better GSM network than T-Mobile in the US?
I was looking at the T-Mo USA site, and there are some amazing "Monthly4G" SIM only plans (e.g. $30/month for 100 minutes, unlimited texts and 5GB of HSPA data).
This seems much better value than AT&T, Verizon and even Sprint! But is their network sketchy compared to the others?

AT&T offers the second largest network coverage behind Verizon. They are also one of the two GSM carriers in the United States, and tend to be more popular with mobile phone enthusiasts because their UMTS bands are more common and used with other regions such as Canada or Australia. T-Mobile does indeed offer excellent value, but they use mainly AWS band in addition to PCS band in selected regions, thus making them the lesser choice for using unlocked phones from outside the country.
Hey,
Just looking on wiki:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-Mobile_USA#Radio_frequency_spectrum_chart
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AT&T_Mobility#Radio_Frequency_Summary
It looks like T-Mo mainly use 1900 for 2G and 1700 for 3G, whereas AT&T use 850 and 1900 for both 2G/3G, right?
So if I bought a Canadian Razr HD XT925 and came to the US, would I be able to use T-Mo's 3G network? I am guessing no, since it does not support 3G on 1700MHz.
But then there is a note on that Wiki page saying that they now have a roaming agreement with AT&T after the failed acquisition. So if I forced the phone into "WCDMA only" mode from the test menu, would it then fall back onto the AT&T 3G network?
Sorry for taking the thread slightly off topic
Cheers,
Su

As you have read, T-Mobile did acquire PCS bands from the failed merger with AT&T, but these bands are not as utilized as their 850 MHz band so it's not as widely available as you may think. Some areas might be able to use the 1900 MHz band for T-Mobile 3G, but I would check with fellow T-Mobile users to confirm first before you dive in headfirst. I know that there are T-Mobile users in the Dallas-Fort Worth area that are getting 3G data connectivity with their unlocked AT&T iPhones.
Well T-Mo do daily plays for like 2 bucks right, so I can always try this out before committing to a contract
Do you think AT&T would be the better bet if I am bringing my own device from Europe?
The reason I ask is that I may be coming to a US college for a couple of years, so naturally, I'm planning ahead to see if my phone will work over there

If you're using a device from Europe or Asia, then yes, you have a much higher chance of being able to get 3G connectivity with AT&T. Off the top of my head, Nokia seems to be the only one that tries to actively keep AWS band in their radios.
Hmm, so I did a bit of research on GSM Arena. Seems the Nexus line of devices consistently support 1700MHz 3G (including the Nexus S which I currently have).
Guess who cancelled their Nexus 4 order last week, and opted for a Canadian RAZR HD instead...
Whoops
I was thinking of pulling the trigger on pre-order for a few reasons, but have not been able to get an answer of two questions!?
1 ) It says that the Verizon is coming soon, and list Band on the specs, if I pre-order will Verizon compatibility be a software upgrade or will it be a different model phone?
2 ) They talk about a developer edition with unlocked bootloader, is the the unlocked carrier version the same as the developer edition, or is that going to be a different phone all together?
Unfortunately I missed the press conference today and hoping and maybe the questions were answered. Also I figured the great knowledgeable people over here at XDA might know this answer. I have tried contacting HTC support, but it seems their chat system is down. I sent them a Facebook post with these questions, but and not optimistic that they will get back to me.
Anyways thanks,
Leroy
1. Verizon is a software update. It will run on their LTE network. In theory at least. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2493426,00.asp
2. I missed if there would be a developer edition. The presentation said the unlocked carrier version can have bootloader unlocked and not void the warranty. https://youtu.be/VZM17XI409M?t=888
[edit]
HTC's website says the Verizon update will be released in November. I thought I read somewhere that it should be within a week of launch, but I can't remember where I saw it.
[/edit]
Is it possible to use an Indian credit card to place an order and ship to USA address? Do they still do the verification and bill only US cards?

Appreciate all the info @pkinetics
My only concern is what the was said in the article. The phone will not have CDMA, so those spots in a building have happened to me oh so much, where I loose LTE and go to 3g. I can assume with this phone that would mean I would have no service. I really applaud HTC for making a move so bold. There are so many unlocked phones world wide for GSM that are really affordable. I just purchased a used phone to hold me out until I decided if I wanted a Nexus 5x or not, but I think that I am gonna go with this phone. I know that I may loose service sometimes, but usually when I am in a building I am on wifi and I use hangouts for all of my calls and sms.
Thanks again for the links

I don't think they're releasing a DevEd. The unlocked version is sim unlocked only I believe.
Nope, in the live stream they said the phone will not lose its warranty with opened bootloader and unlocked condition. And you can install custom roms without losing it too.

Does anyone know if you can use the unlocked / free US version in Europe / Germany completely without any restriction?
Especially with all frequencies and bands?
Does anyone happen to know if the Sprint version has a CDMA radio? (Just wondering if it might be possible to migrate the sprint version over to verizon land.) LTE-only on Verizon will be a bit of an issue for voice calls in spotty / fringe areas...

If things go as planned, CDMA on Verizon will be no longer...by end of 2016.
They intend to have their entire CDMA market covered with LTE by that time and will be phasing out legacy CDMA altogether.
VoLTE will BE their voice coverage.
Just throwing that out there...

I've seen blurbs about:
1. Shipping early November. I swear I heard in the presentation he said first week of November. I'm guessing this is basic colors.
2. Acid gold and deep garnet will ship late November.
3. Sprint has said they will have the A9 available Nov 6. AT&T has committed, but not set a date or price.
The USA need to start next week Monday in my opinion.

Most likely...
Well, HTC updated A9 Verizon info on their site.
Instead of "Verizon coming soon"
Now it says: "Verizon coming in December"
:silly:
Aloha Santod,
I couldn't help myself and ended up pulling the trigger on the unlocked version. I'm hoping that if what they say is true that this will run on Verizon. If the boot loader is accessible for unlocking and it works on Verizon I will be one step closer to your custom roms.I decided to sell my M9 because I was dissapointed with the camera and I'm currently using my m8 to pass the time. Hope you decide to do your magic on this unit.
Mahalo Bro.
so its a preorder now, when will this ship for gsm models? i may return my m9 and buy this instead.
I think the a9 is a beautiful device for its price
The Sprint version has all the bands necessary for project Fi. Wonder if that's in the cards as well.
My ultimate plan is to get a phone that I can use with both Ringplus and T-Mobile. I know about the Nexus phones and the new Moto X Pure, but I'm on a budget and the new Moto G is just what I want in features for the price.
So my first question is if I can get the XT1548 to work on Ringplus. But that question becomes mute if I can't even get it to work on Tmobile. On the plus side, if I can get it to work on Tmobile, the XT1548 supports LTE band 12. :good:
does anyone know if the XT1548 can be sim unlocked?

You need GSM.
I use an XT1540 on wind and that uses the same bands as T-Mobile I believe. ( I live in Canada. ) I've had previous phones on Wind Mobile that had T-Mobile tags so I believe they also use the UMTS (maybe 1700 band?) signal as well.
"Differences between unlocked GSM andCDMA*phones. This topic is important when it comes to*unlocking*a GSM or*CDMA*phone because they don't both work in the same way. It is because of the differences between them in regards to the hardware they use to connect to a network (SIM card versus no SIM card)." - http://support.mobileunlocked.com/h...ferences-between-unlocked-GSM-and-CDMA-phones - pulled from google for a bit of piece of mind.
Ringplus may have no sim (in order to keep you locked into their network.)
T-Mobile does include sim cards because I've pulled one out of said wind mobile phones lol
Thanks for your reply. maybe a little more context can help.
So, this is the thread that inspired my question.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/guide-success-sim-unlock-sprint-xt1056-t2825155
RingPlus is a MVNO for Sprint. You can use a number of Sprint, Virgin, Boost phones on RingPlus. People have also gotten the new Moto X and the Nexus phones that work with all carriers working on RingPlus and T-Mobile at the same time by just switching sim cards. I want to do the same with the Moto G.
Because RingPlus is a MVNO of Sprint, it uses CDMA. This is why I would need to use the XT1548 instead of the XT1540. I hope that clears things up.
Ahhh okay! Yeah it does my bad heh I did kinda rush that answer. I would imagine as long as that variant supports both radio bands I would imagine it would work. I have a single sim but I have heard there is dual sim as well, that would probably be your best bet. Just check what frequency the carriers both run on and give your device model a scan on gsm arena or any spec observant website to see if it supports both.
Example : UMTS 1700 is the band I need in order to use wind mobile on phones.
First, if you are able to purchase an XT1548 you better be sure that it isn't subsidized and the service you purchase it from is willing to allow you to take that device to another MVNO. It's a matter of reaching a staff person who is able and willing. Ting may be the only one that will be helpful with this.
Second, good luck getting Sprint or someone to domestically unlock GSM for this phone. As of today, I doubt it will be easy. It may require you to activate the phone on Sprint service and then find the support chain that will domestically unlock GSM. They are not obligated to do this.
The jumping of hoops might look something like this:
1. Purchase unsubsidized XT1548 from Ting when it's available (PM me for $25 Ting referral credit).
2. Activate on Ting ($6).
3. Ask Ting to "release" the phone to be activated on Sprint.
4. Activate on Sprint.
5. Request DSU from Sprint.
6. Ask Sprint to "release" the phone to be activated on RingPlus.
7. Activate on RingPlus.
8. Activate T-Mobile SIM and install the SIM to see if the phone works on GSM (not 4G LTE capable).
EDIT: If you want to port your number, I wouldn't bother til your final activation.
Good luck!
The US Cellular version of the Moto E is apparently SIM unlocked. By US Cellular's device policy, none of their Motorola branded phones are SIM locked. Perhaps the US Cellular Moto G would be more likely to work on domestic GSM as well as Sprint MNVOs. Certainly that's true of the Moto E.
unlocking GSM on moto xt1548
I have a moto g xt1548 that I asked a friend to get me since I lost my prior phone. However i live in ethiopia for work and this phone doesn't seem to be connecting to the gsm networks here. I'm aware the phone was originally bought for use on virgin mobile's network, but I expected the gsm would work nonetheless here (I reckon the phone uses both CDMA and GSM bandwidths). Some help would be nice here. How can I get the phone to recognise the networks here. I have tried everything from GSM to WCDMA but yet to try LTE (which is also available in ethiopia). I need to get the LTE sim card first. Is there a way to do this? Otherwise would rooting and flashing a custom ROM help? Or is it possible to find a work around to unlock GSM connectivity otlf that is what is locked.?
x1548 is CDMA only as far as I'm aware.

No, the XT1548 supports:
XT1548 US (Sprint, US Cellular, Virgin Mobile)
CDMA: 800, 850, 1900
GSM: 850, 900, 1800, 1900
UMTS/HSPA: 850, 1700, 1900
LTE: B2 (1900), B4 (1700), B5 (850), B12 (700), B17 (700), B25 (1900), B26 (850), LTE-TDD: B41 (2500)
Single SIM

This device should work in Ethiopia, at least as a basic GSM device, data above basic Edge service may not work.
According to GSM Arena, in that country 900Mhz is used for GSM, and 2100 Mhz for 3G, and 4G/LTE is not available. So the phone should work, but data service will not.
Virgin Mobile XT1548 Unlock
I have the Virgin Mobile XT1548 (on sale at Best Buy for $50 right now) and I'm trying to unlock it to work on T-Mobile. Has anyone managed to do this?
When I put a T-Mobile SIM card into the XT1548 no unlock window comes up, so I'm not holding my breath but it would be fantastic if anyone has found a way to unlock the Virgin Mobile version of the XT1548.

No unlock password prompt opens and no "Invalid SIM" icon appears in the notification bar? What does it show for SIM status in Settings - About Phone?

The odds that I'd run into a thread that's tailored to my question.
I placed my T-Mobile SIM into an XT1548 I just bought and... nothing. At all. It's like the SIM doesn't exist.

Yep. Then I place the Virgin SIM back into it and it recognizes just fine. The T-Mobile SIM is brand new and activated. Purchased it with the phone.

After a reboot, it does say "SIM card error" as a notification. If you click on that it takes you to a screen where it asks you to make sure the SIM card is inserted correctly and contact the service provider. Again nowhere to enter an unlock code.
SIM status in settings says: "Not available" for every field. I've tried all four different ways to insert the SIM card (in case I had it in wrong somehow) and still no luck.

Hmm... I got nothing on this one I'm afraid. I've done this lots of times with other locked devices, always opens a SIM Lock password prompt, haven't tried a Moto since a Cricket version of the original G. Sorry.

That's okay, I'm just hoping someone out there has an unlock and is willing to share it or offer it for sale. For $50 this phone is a STEAL if you could SIM unlock it. I'm partial to its IPX7 waterproof capability as well.

I'm actually on the same boat. If I figure something out, I will be sure to let you know.
Gonna try to flash CyanogenMod and maybe even some from http://forum.xda-developers.com/2015-moto-g/general/index-moto-g-factory-firmware-images-t3169639 if I'm feeling adventurous... Will report back.
I already unlocked the bootloader and I have CM13 already installed. I put an AT&T sim card when starting but I wasn't prompted for an unlock code. I did request an unlock code from www.doctorsim.com if that would even make a difference. I'm still waiting for it to be processed.
