Why should I buy the shield? - Shield Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can you please share your thoughts and experience on why a potential buyer should consider the shield please.?

There's plenty of other threads already on this forum about that. Please try using the search function. Or read product reviews about the Shield Tablet. They will give you a great summary.
I'll throw in this: K1 processor for far, far less than a Nexus 9.

Here on XDA there are more people who can really give a solid opinion on the tablet, and why it IS such a great buy.
You know all those people who do reviews and summary's and stuff, most of the time use the tablet for a few days, review it, then never touch it again...I wouldn't use or recommend those if I were you.
Also just remember, every question you ever ask for the rest of your life will have already been answered at some point. And every answer you give, there has already been another, better one given.

Very true which is why I asked for the experience of actual users as wouldn't trust online reviews. Am more concerned about the battery life to be honest. Apparently only 2 hours of gaming that would be ridiculous.

Remember the processor in this thing is supposedly as powerful as a Xbox 360, plus the 1080p screen its driving. And if your playing the most intense games, made to utilize all the Shields power, then yeah, 2-4 hours average.
Regular use however, I easily get 7-8 hours.

Thanks so you would definitely pick this instead of the z2?

Well, I already have picked this over the z2
But, not for everyone. The Shield tablet is definitely more powerful, but the z2 has a larger screen, vibration, etc. Things that the Shield doesn't. I'd say figure out what you will mainly be using your tablet for and make a decision off that.

Owning both an N5 and N7 redundant?

So I have the original Nexus 7. Love it! But I'm about 99% sure I'll get a Nexus 5. I do love the 7" form factor, but in your honest opinion (and I'm asking those of you who have owned 4.5 - 5 inch smartphones) will the size of the N5 be good enough to justify getting rid of my tablet? They both run basically the same software. I like to read a lot and play some games.
I'll probably hang on to both until I'm sure, but wondered if anyone had an opinion or owned multiple devices and your thoughts. Thanks!!

Your question seems a bit vague to receive a solid answer. I can say personally, I use my wifi only Nexus 7 for reading books, watching youtube, browsing sites, research, etc., etc. when I know I won't be near a computer and don't feel like draining my phone battery. I use my Gnex as a phone, sms messenger, and all of the above items mentioned for N7. The N7 can't do what my phone does, and my phone isn't large scale enough for extended times spent doing all the things mentioned.
It really boils down to what you're using each for. Some people just don't need a phone but get big use out of a tablet, others don't have the lifestyle for a tablet and need a slightly larger phone.
As the owner of a Nexus 4, and 7, I have to say that I love having both. I like to be able to surf the web on my tablet in the morning and at night on the couch, and it's a lot easier to use than a 4-5" smartphone. A smartphone is alright when I'm out shopping, at work, etc, but in the comfort of my own home the Nexus 7 makes a lot more sense the way I use it. The bigger screen on the Nexus 7 makes web surfing a lot more enjoyable primarily. I can access a lot of desktop websites more comfortably since they fit the screen ratio of a tilted Nexus 7 better. No need to zoom in either since text is usually large enough to comfortably read.

That is helpful! I'm basically just wondering if someone who bought a smartphone let their tablet collect dust (since a phone does everything and more now). But you just said you still use your larger screen tablet for doing other things. Which is good to know. I'll probably keep both but man, I really need a phone and the Nexus 5 is looking great, just have to justify keeping my tablet which is only 2 inches bigger, but with lower specs and can't talk/text on it. Seriously, if phones start to become 6+ inches (like the Note) there is almost no reason to keep a 7 inch tablet too!
And thank you also Rarscaryfrosty! Very good advice! (N7 has crazy good battery life too).
I have a galaxy nexus and a Nexus 7 (2013). No they are not redundant. The Nexus 7 is much better for extended web browsing and reading ebooks than even a 5" phone would be (I suspect). And conversely it is nice to pull out your phone when you need to access info quickly or want to be less conspicuous about it. I bring both the Nexus 7 and GNex with me everyday and use both everyday. I will say that since my GNex is getting old it is kind of nice to have a back up device that has a longer battery. Back when I only had the GNex I would try to do all my mobile browsing on it (like 4hrs per day of straight browsing) and the battery barely held up. Now I do major browsing sessions on the Nexus 7 and I don't have battery life issues with either device because they share the burden.
I have an N4, my wife has an HTC One and we bought my son an N7. He is a little to young to play with it by himself so it is basically there for whenever we want to use it. I personally find no need for it and my wife never picks it up either.
We carry our phones with us in our house and that is our go to device. If you are into reading or watching movies then a tablet might be your thing and maybe even some games but for the things we do on a daily basis I always turn to my phone. If I need a good browser on a bring screen I just use my laptop in my home which is still a better browsing experience then a tablet.
If I did not have a child to buy the N7 for, I would not have purchased it for myself.
Not redundant at all. The n7 is a the best ereader there is. The n5 is a phone. Neither does the other's primary job well.

I agree with this statement. A tablet is a great device to read books with. Otherwise I really don't see a need for it.

Yah, if I didn't read e-books, I wouldn't like my 7 as much as I do. It's good for gaming but my 10 is better. Same for Web surfing. It can be a phone but my phone is better. Reading ebooks, though... Nothing even comes close to a 7 for that and I read a LOT.
I have and s3, s4, note 2 note 3 and just ordered the N5.plus I have two laptops and several tablets of different screen sizes floating around lol.
Theres times for various reasons you may want or need to use a device with a certain size screen..nice to have options.
So speaking as someone who has a few devices lying around..keep them both

Hard choice

Hello!
Now I have s3 mini and I want to buy a new one. S3 mini was a great phone, especially with cm12, but I find it too slow and screen size is not enough for me. After reading through forums and reviews, watching videos and other stuff, I have found 2 great phones for me. One Plus One or Zenfone 2. And here is the problem, should I buy OPO or wait for Two? Or should I choose Asus?
Do you really want to rely on the opinions of compete strangers (who may or may not know what they're talking about, who may or may not be biased) to decide how to spend hundreds of dollars? I really don't understand these kinds of threads.

This phone is great, buy it. Reasons? It's cheap. The OnePlus Two won't be cheap. The Zenfone doesn't have anywhere near as good a development community.

Thanks for your opinion.
Have used the nexus 6, note 4, but my word, the oneplus is the best. It's cheaper, good dev support and for me most importantly the phone has the best signal strength of all the phones I have ever used.
I've been eyeing the zenfone two for a while now but sadly the Intel chipset it's running on isn't gaining much traction at the moment. And although people are praising Asus' zenui interface for Android, I'd still rather have options. Meanwhile, the OPO has basically everything you need. No reason to jump headfirst into zenfone land at the moment just to discover it's actually a desert. Not when the OPO community is thriving.

The opo is a great phone, make no mistake. If you have none of the known issues, it's really great. Plenty of power all around, it's how android should happen in any device. Battery for 2 or 3 days with regular to slightly heavy use. Probably a bit too big, but that's personal taste.
But it has the potential for underlying problems that may or may not happen. Case in point, screen touch issues. People report starting to have touch issues out of nowhere and it's a toss up on whatever is really causing it. I've rma'd mine 1 month after getting it almost an year ago, opo said it was hardware, new one came with the same problem, got fixed with a software update (38r I think). At this point, running a cm12 nightly, got even better, it's 99.9% trouble free (I get a random swipe like once a week, totally neglectable). That said, there's always people around the forum complaining their phone started acting out of nowhere. Pretty sure there's many more that don't have any problems we don't hear about, so consider that too.
Don't know the zenphone2. But honestly, I'd probably go for an LG g3 at this point, it's a phone that's kind of cheap to get (especially if you give the time to find a used one in great condition), nearly the same price point as opo, liked how it works, probably much faster support than opo. Don't read that as better support, there's plenty of people complaining about that, apart from taking nearly 2 months to complete the whole process, I had no issues with them with the rma.
If I'd be looking for anything more expensive I'd be looking into a Sony z3 (compact or regular) or wait for the z4 around the corner. Not much advertised, but Sony has brilliant but a bit on the expensive side phones.
Obligartory statement, I will not give money to samsung for anything mobile ever again.

All reviews I've seen range from claiming that the Moto X (2015) is mediocre but solid, to being the savior of Android in 2015.
It did make Wired's top 3 phones, along with Galaxy S6+ and iPhone 6.
They are calling it "higher-end midranger"
Sent from my HTC6600LVW using Tapatalk
Midrange? Mediocre? I mean its not the top of the flight device but its still on par with lg g4, they basically have the same specs. The camera might not be so good on low light but lets wait and see, if the device is stable with stock android, does not over heat, have a regular updates and its made of fine material i cant see that any review will stop me from buying it :good:
Edit: oh, and i almost forgot the battery, hope its not that bad
I'm holding off for root and hands on reviews from people here. No reason to rush out but I can't wait to see how much activity this forum gets over the coming weeks.
I live in Europe so by then i hope i ll get pretty much good picture about the device, lets hope for the best :victory:

I couldn't agree more! In fact, I bought my first Apple Iphone: 6+ (second hand at reduced price on Swappa) and let me tell you, I don't know what all the fuss is about. Slow, inefficient OS. I don't understand why people are devoted to Iphones, other than build quality and camera (which is now a moot point). Makes no sense. I am re-selling on Swappa or ebay..and it is now my last Iphone.
Strange reviews from the sites linked to in this thread. Reading them, I don't know much about the phone that I didn't to begin with. The camera gets some attention, but things like the speakers and the specifics of the display don't. How good do the speakers sound? What do they sound like? How's the volume? There's some mention that the HTC BoomSound speakers are better. That's fine. But some detail? More importantly, what about the display? A few reviewers complained that it's not as good as the AMOLED is on Samsung devices. Personally, I don't much care for AMOLED displays, though they have their strengths. How accurate are the colors on the new Style? Are the whites bright and genuinely white? (They aren't on AMOLED displays, a major problem, at least for me.)
I'm not one to study benchmarks extensively. Some general info about them is fine for me. But I do want some detail. Just saying "I like it" or "I don't like it" doesn't do anyone any good.
I suppose that the reviews we get from the geekier sites will fill in a few blanks. That and feedback from early users here.
I completely agree. The Engadget review seems the best one so far. Verge was terrible.
Based on these reviews, the battery doesn't seem too great, just mediocre. Hopefully we'll get better reviews from mkhd and/or android authority.
If the battery is that bad, I may hope the Huawei Nexus has a bigger battery and is around the $400 price range. If not, hopefully the Motorola Force? That is if it isn't a Verizon exclusive and the price is around $400.
Last resort is the Oneplus 2.

Normally youtube, she is huge on displays and will run all sorts of tests on it.
On another note I found this review helpful https://youtu.be/dfPPEDWqRxI
That CNET review really glorified the Note 5. As an owner of the Note 4, I know it's strengths. The Note 5 shares none of those strengths. And I know its weaknesses. The Note 5 shares them all.
Sorry Samsung, you're dead to me. Can't wait for my Moto X.

Honest Opinions Wanted - Is This Phone Still Good In 2017?

Hi all. I have a chance to possibly buy this phone and wanted honest reviews. How do people like this phone and if I happen to find a good one cheap would it be a good buy?

Depends on what price you're getting in.
Everything you throw at this phone runs smooth as f###
hey pal,
you know for these 2-3 years, i didnt bother to see the smartphone market,
i got no reason to change to a new one.. haha
Depends on you and what you want. If you want high-end camera or excellent battery performance then nope it is not. But it has average even good camera-you dont miss any details or photos can be used for social media easily- and this battery can last you for 1 day. Not official but with custom ROMS you can use very smooth and flawless noguat which is the last and newest version of the android. This specs has got me and i am very happy with my OPO and 3gigs of ram really gives you what you want. But if you want official rom support, really high end camera and high end battery life or high and gaming experience or newest SoT well this phone is not for you. Think and know what you want, then you can find your choice.
Thanks guys.

So What's your final call?
Honestly, in 2017 if you are out in the market, OnePlus One shouldn't even be an option.
Its dated, and not at par with current mid range devices. I would advise you against getting a One even though I love this phone.
It just doesn't make sense to get it 3 years after its launch.

He said he can get it at a good price. If he can get it at a good price, this phone is (which is amazing IMO) very usable in 2017.
The only BUT is the camera...but even then the camera is pretty damn good.
Once a Oneplus 4 comes out with IP68, Ill finally drop my Oneplus One.
I'm trying to find an excuse to replace mine but none really justify doing so
There isn't a single rational reason to update this phone (despite what the gear heads claim). With the right custom rom battery lasts for two days (try slim7 or nitrogen os), roms are fluid, apps open quickly and camera is on par with other cams of this size. Low light photography is a pain, and will be for several more years for all sensors of this size. Even 3/4 size consumer cameras out there struggle with this, so it won't be any better for long time.

Agreed.
Overall this phone is wonderful. Rough, tough, durable, great battery life, size, quick, good adequate camera (with the right app).
I can't kill this phone (physically or by mucking around with its OS, KitKat to Nougat).
My teen kids loved this phone's looks and performance but hated its size (when I first got it they each took it for a month test run) had they also made this in a 4.7 version, this would have been their phone of choice.
Upon this phone's demise, my next phone will likely be the Oneplus 3T.

My only reason would be IP68 and I do miss OIS sometimes for certain camera shots.
But besides that...this phone is still relevant in 2017, 3 years after its release.

I have opo from 3 years. If you can buy one i think battery is already dated so the usage will be over limited . for 150 dollars go to xiaomi
It is still a great phone. But battery is aging and is really hard to find "genuine" replacement (after 2 years I am getting around 4h SOT before 6h-9h). Same goes for Back Cover mine is showing that 2 years of using without case and it is impossible to buy replacement. So I am going to wait for OP4 and if OP4 won't by for me I will buy used OP3 for cheap.

Question Should I buy

Thinking of buying a used rog phone 5 for playing codm BR. should I, also where can i get the aeroactive cooler in europe for a normal price?

Since this is a very specific section, it shouldn't be hard to figure out that the device is the item in question when nothing else is mentioned.
Whether or not to buy the ROG Phone 5 is a hard decision, but getting the fan for a realistic price can be done on the Asus official site. eBay is hit or miss, as a lot of the sellers are exporting the Korean version and charging considerable shipping on what already has a markup. The only reason to ever go with one of those third party sellers would be long-term unavailability.

DO NOT BUY. Previous update messed up my wifi n hotspot. I had to travel almost 50kms to get the motherboard replaced. This new update messed up my Air Triggers, they've started flickering. MYASUS support suggested me to upgrade to newest version Android12 and it's still flickering. Save yourself the trouble my friend and invest the same amount on a decent graphics card if you have a PC or rather upgrade ur PC. Ofcourse it's my personal suggestion.

The previous update didn't mess up your WiFi. It's a production fault that has impacted about 20% of users from certain regions requiring a motherboard replacement.
An 21 Ultra has similar specs, but without all the flashy lights and fancy software. It beats spending $1200 on a graphics card to realize that your PC doesn't fit in your pocket and the CPU needed an upgrade, too.

Not a fan of information I take it.
If you do alot of mobile gaming, I'd recommend it. I do a ton of gaming, streaming, and emulation on my phone since I vary rarely have the time to sit down at my PC. I've got the 5s version in the US bought from Asus.
Compared to my S21 Ultra, the software isn't has tight, fingerprint reader is a bit touchy, and the cameras are just OK, but the battery life is better, performance is noticeably quicker in general, and I don't think I can go back to a device that doesn't have the side triggers as it just makes gaming that much better.
Better go with Nubia Redmagic 5g...

Quite the opposite. Look, I get you're mad about what happened to your device. I didn't do that to you and taking it out on me isn't going to fix it. Also quite the opposite, it just means there is one less person who feels bad about it and wants to help.
