[Q] Is it possible to remove adware without removing the app - General Questions and Answers

This is probably a stupid question but...
I've been trying for the past 3 days to download this app from the Google play store, but it says it's incompatible with my device (Xperia SP).
I've used Market Helper and it didn't work.
I've tried editing my build.prop and it bricked my phone (lol) I recovered it but lost all my contacts
Anyway, I've resorted to sideloading it. The problem is, since I've installed it I'm getting push ad notifications and popups on my home screen, browser etc.
So, is there anything I can download to stop the adware or somehow remove the adware without uninstalling said app?
Thanks

That makes no sense. What do you mean by removing that without uninstalling ? Your statement is self contradictory.
If you are rooted you can freeze that app using Titanium Backup.
Why don't you try AdAway ?

Hi, I mean I want to keep the app but I also want to stop it from putting ads on my phone and notification bar as well.
I just downloaded AdAway and turned off notifications from that app in the settings so hopefully that will work.
Thanks a lot

You are welcome.AdWare is supposed to block and remove ads and notifications on your phone. If you are still getting ads or the app itself is putting ads and notifications then it's not serving the purpose either it's not working or malfunctioning (broken codes).
Is that an Ad-supported app ?If it is,then that's not an issue.AdAway will block those ads.

[Q] Disable OTA updates possible?

I am trying and getting absolutely nowhere disabling the OTA update nag screen. Even though my phone is rooted I can not disable the OTA update service nor rename the otacerts.zip file (as it still says access is denied.)
Motorola is refusing to help me aswell.
Surely there is a way of doing this?
Any help would be much appriciated.
I disabled the OTA and a whole bunch of other services using Greenify. There is a thread in this forum, with a comprehensive list of services that can be disabled (far more than I disabled). I also disabled some apps from multi tasking. I typically get 3 days of moderate usage. So its a win win situation.
Can u tell me the apps that i can disable to save battery life.

I understand to do this I have to install the xposed framework? Something that does worry me after seeing the dreaded boot loop recently.
I am under the impression from some thread in here, renaming otacerts.zip in the system folder to otacerts.bak can disable the function, but likewise I am a bit worried about bricking my phone. Motorola have informed me that updates are mandatory now and they will not tell me how to disable OTA updates.
The lack of working apps for things like this is also putting me off playing around too.

I got rid of the nag screen by disabling an app called "motorolaOTA" and erasing the cache in recovery to delete the OTA file. I really wouldn't recommend upgrading to 4.4.4 as I eventually did anyway about a week after disabling the nag screen (wanted to test it out lol) and in the process hard bricked my phone.
So, disable "motorolaOTA" and whatever you do DO NOT upgrade!

Sorry, I dont have access to the phone right now so cannot list the services. But I think I fed some miss-information, I now realize that I used Titanium backup to freeze the unwanted apps. This being all Motorola services. I then used Greenify on my messaging apps, like Facebook, Whatsapp and others.
But I do agree with another comment in this thread that rooting does mess up the upgrade process, it becomes a real pain! So its worth considering to not do it. Like others I have not upgraded to 4.4.4

This helped me with the upgrade (Phone is unlocked, rooted and had xposed modules on it before the upgrade)
For me to succesfully update the OTA i had to do follow the steps in the OP of this Post. I tried a lot of flashing, but in the end only this worked:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g/general/ota-file-indian-dual-sim-4-4-4-t2810166
Just follow the steps below the text:
REVERT TO STOCK WITHOUT LOSING DATA OR ANYTHING ELSE
After this, you have to root it again with superboot. It's worth the effort to have 4.4.4. The phone feels more responsive for me.
Problem Solved!
I installed "System app remover (ROOT) by Jumobile". Its a free app in the google play store. This allowed me to uninstall Motorola OTA service.
The upgrade nag screen has yet to re-appear, and my phone is otherwise functioning perfectly.
Well done! I had never heard of this app, it looks neat. I use Titanium primarily for backups, the ability to freeze apps is just a nice bonus. I wonder if Titanium and "System app remover" work using the same method? With Titanium its easy to restore a frozen app. I read that "System app remover" puts removed apps in the recycle bin. I'm wondering what the chances are of this storage getting erased by accident, making it harder to restore?

[Q] Gfirewall and Gsearch bloatware/virus problem.. HELP!

Hello guys, i have a problem as reported above with 2 bloatware apps on my android phone: Gfirewall and Gsearch.
My phone model is UBTEL U8 (MTK model, china phone) and i'm running Android 4.2.2 ROOTED. I have no custom rom/firmware installed.
These 2 apps appeared magically about 2/3 months ago, and i thought they were safe beacuse of Google logo and name. Nothing happened in these months except for some phone crashes and restarts, but 2 days ago a banner ad appeared in my home screen at phone restart and/or phone unlock. I use AdAway (similar to AdBlock) to disable ALL TYPES of banner, ads and related on my phone, browser and apps. When i went to AdAway i noticed that was disabled: i enabled it again and restarted the phone.. but banner ads still showing.. so i went again in AdAway and it was disabled.. again!
I have a similar problem with 3G/H connection with Vodafone. Everytime i disable internet connection, it gets activated again in 1 minute max.. so i can't disable internet.. never!
I removed these 2 bloatware apps today and fortunatly they didn't show up again or get reinstalled.. ads and AdAway blocks are disappeared. I started a lot of antivirus controls with Avira and nothing showed up.. so i thought i was fine, BUT the internet problem persists.. i can't disable internet everytime i want. Someone of you could help me to solve this problem? I hope there is an alternative method to solve this without format/reset the phone!
I have the same problem with Gfirewall and Gsearch in my STAR N9800
Same full screen banner ad in my home screen.
In my phone there is Trend Micro Worry Free Business Security Services as antivirus, but nothing was found after a full scan.
If I find something new, I'll write here

I am facing the same issues, I do not think a hard reset will solve the problem, these two apps are embedded in the firmware, they lie dormant for a while then kick in, after a while, about 3months after purchase.
I have tried uninstalling & they just re-install, if you phone is rooted, you can hybernate them with ''App Quarantine''
I am struggling to deal with them, as my phone is not currently rooted.
FYI: CM security now shows Gsearch as a virus.
Any solutions please??
Cheers Martin

Yes you are very likely to be correct, I was kinda hoping, for a solution without rooting? Any ideas? Anyone?

Same problem , rooted phone and uninstalled gsearch and gfirewall but in one or two days they auto-reinstall
Play Store
There is a app in the rom called Play Store (Not Google Play Store!) and Opera Service
Remove those apps from the rom to prevent advertisements at screen unlocking.
To remove Play Store and Opera service your phone needs to be rooted (use Titanium backup fi). You can check this by using a firewall like droidwall.
If you can't root your device:
Use a firewall like mobiwol if your device is not rooted (is creates an internal vpn where it can filter your traffic).
Suspicious files found running at background
I have the same problem with the two files reinstalling by itself after I delete them. I have a Chinese made smartphone Tronsmart PS7 running Android 4.2.2 rooted. After digging deeper into the files running at the background, I noticed there are files that have complete access to all the privilege rights in my phone other than android system, they are android.cube, AdupsFotaReboot, RebootAndWriteSys and Common Data Service. I have tried to force these files to stop and it seems the problem is solved, Anyone has any ideas what these 4 files are for?
I don't think to do any hard reset, if these are hard coded in ROM, this is not a stable solution
IMHO there are only two exit ways:
1) do a virus submission request
I've done this request 1 minute ago.
2) flash the device with another ROM (4.2.2 is getting older, anyway...)
You can see the manifests of Gsearch and Gfirewall, are identical:
Not so good news...
Hi all,
in my case, I found a solution. Once MTKDroidTools used to get root on the phone (root only, nothing else), I pressed the button "Delete China" and the application has removed the files from the "files_for_delete.txt" list. After this, the problems are over !!!
Another way to do this with the phone already rooted, you do it manually, and you can follow the steps of:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=44455669
or
http://electricheatingcosts.com/removing-chinese-smartphone-spyware/
Best regards.
No more Gsearch and Gfirewall
I had the same problem with my Chinese new teca n9900 and I found the same apps on my phone that you mentioned. I force stopped android.cube, AdupsFotaReboot, Common Data Service, and RebootandWriteSys in app manager in the setting and now Gfirewall and Gsearch stopped automatically installing. I can't seem to enable them back to restart even after I reboot the phone except for "android.cube" that app will restart after I reboot the phone which may be the app causing them to reinstall. I'm not sure what exactly these apps do but my phone seems to work perfectly without them running. Thank you.

Hi all, my rooted phone is Ulefone U9592 and I found this information :
http://androidforums.com/android-applications/864435-gfirewall.html
TEXT : " My phone is rooted, i set every apk need confirm install, and wait the apk download and confirm install, i used root explorer try to search which directory is. In my phone, i found "/data/user/0/com. cube. android" have the gfirewall apk, i delete that directory, also check whose apk create this directory. The apk is Cube_CJIA01.apk in /system/app, i delete this apk. It fixed. (I think you find the name may not same Cube_CJIA01.apk)"
Well, I revised this information and the folder are : "/data/user/0/com. cube.activity" or "/data/data/com. cube.activity" and in the folder "files" I found :
"_com.gsz.own.pack.apk" and "_com.zgs.gg.pack.apk" (GSearch and GFirewall), I deleted this APK's and I think the problem is solved ..... NOT REALLY!!
If you check the folder "shared_prefs" you find various XML with the information shared at ALISOFT (Chinesse company) and specifically "ApkLoader.xml" with the URL where are downloaded GSearch and GFirewall. Only you need to delete in the XML the parts what you not are interested .... well, if you reboot the phone, the infected XML are restored. The best option is delete the file Cube_CJIA01.apk (do Backup) and reboot the phone. The mentioned folder disappears and the phone works well. Enjoy !!!
Best regards.

Hi Federico,
I think you already have rooted the phone. Well, I used for this MTKDroidTools, found in this forum (and modified for only install 'su" and "SuperUser.apk"). No problem, only is needed root for System access.
The app Cube_CJIA01.apk is in the folder "/System/app/" (the normal folder for System App's ). The folder "/data/user/0/" is a soft-link (use ln in linux) to the folder "/data/data/"). You locate in this folders the same information, and this is a default folder for working or write files, used in the APK's. Every reboot of phone regenerate information in this folder.
Best regards.

Root Without Unlocking Bootloader

How long does it usually take for root Without Unlocking the Bootloader to come out?
This is the only reason I have not purchased this phone yet.
So frustrated there will be no decent normal sized Nexus 6 and the Z3 loses camera features when unlocked ?

There is no "usual" number. Some phones got root before they were even out officially. Some took a few days. Some took over a month. And some end up retired without a safe root option.
First rule of xda: don't ask for eta

Never thought of using adblockers like AdAway, preventing a total waste of mobile data for loading unwanted ads which easily consume ten times the data needed ?
Never thought of kicking out bloatware also wasting your ressources ?
Would love to see root but for now I can manage quite fine without it... There is less bloatware then with certain other brands and you can uninstall or disable quite a bit.
The few things I WOULD like:
* Completely remove unused system apps
* Change LCD Density (it's all soooo big now)
* Full SDCard read/write access for all apps. (I love quickpic as a gallery, but because I save my pics/vids to sdcard it can not remove anything now)
* Titanium backup. Have never ever had issues with this (only user apps+data for me most of the time) and that's with switching between different roms, brands, aosp/stock, etc... Never failed me

ABP (please call it "Adblock Plus" so every readers knows what's meant) does not require root, but it's not too capable running under Android. It does a brilliant job with FireFox and Windows, but the Android implementation only captures a fracture of annoying ads. And: No plugin for defining your own black lists under Android.
AdAway additionally removes annoying ads from a wealth of apps. Just doesn't work without root.
Ok, I can hear you: "If everybody uses that means, app developers won't get paid."
Yes, that's correct.
But:
a) If I really like an app, I'll buy it. Example: Poweramp. NO ads, no annoyance. It just stops working after some time. I regard that as ok. I do NOT like apps getting on my nerves all the time.
My formula is simple: Annoying ads = deinstall, no purchase.
b) A majority of free app developers uses that "evil" ads, appearing at places previously occupied by regular buttons - so you tap on them although you just don't want to.
If that bad behavior gets to a stop, I'll think about disabling AdAway again. Fair play - but on BOTH sides.

Not the Webview if you use GApps such as Play Store, etc, Facebook yes if unused
Disappointed in Sony for including com.facebook.appmanager and com.facebook.system as uninstallable components. My Z5 came with the Facebook app already installed (Customized DE firmware). I never even ran the app (I don't do facebook) - uninstalled it the second I spotted it but these two processes remain and can only be disabled, not uninstalled.

Tks !!!
I keep a real clean phone. I don't use FB either and have it disabled. But I discovered this file or application and as fast as I would shut down and delete cache and data it would reload itself. This action alone made me suspicious of it and I wanted it off my phone or at the very least disabled. On another forum it was recommended to install "Package Disabler Pro" at a cost of $.99 and I tried it. In the notes and warnings you have to use this carefully least you make the phone unusable but I "disable" these two persistant "Facebook" files and they have not come back. My phone works fine too. Then I went after the damn Sprint/Samsung installed voicemail program that keeps wanting you to upgrade and then it had a persistant flag that kept coming up saying "We had forced upgrades too but this one is necessary". I said no to that too and with this program finally have turned it OFF.
Hope this helps.

To completely disable them ("temporary" uninstallation) use Debloater http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/debloater-remove-carrier-bloat-t2998294
or learn how to use the
Code:
pm hide
command
As suggested, i would not disable Android Webview.
Always do a BACKUP of your personal files before disabling system apps : if you are not rooted and disable the wrong package, you'll get in bootloop and will have to reset the phone.

How to completely delete stock apps from Galaxy S8 without root access, like Microsoft apps last night I was trying to remove Excel and Powerpoint but I couldn't, looks weird!
Without root you can use the well known app Package Disabler Pro Samsung:

I don't understand how they're able to update on your phone even with the option disabled. Since buying my phone two weeks ago I've seen either Samsung apps asking to be updating before being used or the app shows as update is available but never updating on tis own without my permission. You got a rooted phone, or something?

I don't understand how they're able to update on your phone even with the option disabled. Since buying my phone two weeks ago I've seen either Samsung apps asking to be updating before being used or the app shows as update is available but never updating on tis own without my permission. You got a rooted phone, or something?

I don't understand either. no, if I was rooted then those apps wouldn't even be on the phone! I haven't spotted it lately so it may have been a bug or something that was fixed (of course Samsung as usual can't be bothered providing proper changelogs so that we have a clue what they have done), but they don't update that often so it might also be that I just didn't see it when it was doing it.
try this one. apps will still take up place in system partition,
but I don't think they will auto update after this.

I have quite a few packages disabled with Package Disabler Pro and have had two system updates without an issue.

That's strange. Also, I'm not using any package disablers. Maybe that's related? The app you're using?
