So yesterday I received a D6603 Z3 direct from Sony and upgraded it to the Nordic 5.0.2. Everything has been great except one problem.
When I record a video and playback on my computer, the audio is far louder coming from the right speaker than the left.
I feel like I saw this mentioned somewhere before but I can't find it again. Any ideas?
I have the same problem and mine isn't even rooted/has never flashed any rom or anything. A launcher is probably the only "big" thing I've done to it.
I've tried messing around with the setting and stuff and nothing worked.
Same issue here. Any workaround?
Edit:
I'm using 4.4.4 with stock ROM, locked bootloader, rooted, and of course default kernel. I didn't flash anything yet like sound enhancer etc.

Hi there,
I was recently listening to music on my phone on the rear end speaker when the sound started to get choppy and distorted, then it just completely shut off. I checked to see if the app had just force closed but it was still going and the song was still on play. I checked the volume and it was on full. The sound has still not come back as of Sunday afternoon. I know its not software side because I recently flashed a new ROM and it still does not work. I cannot hear any system sounds either, no alarms, no ringtones etc. Anyone have any idea as to what might be the problem? Im guessing that the speaker burst, or a wire came out of place.

Go back to factory https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
If it still doesn't work then it is hardware. Use your warranty or pay to fix it.
The factory image flash didnt do much I guess its just a hardware problem then. Good thing the nexus 4 comes out this week too xD It has to be a sign.
About 3 days ago I installed the lastest OTA update (OS Ver: 8.0.10211.204) and now when I try to play videos the sound has no bass at all. This is both with the built in media player and app (ie, Tube pro). Also after the update beats stopped working, turning it off resulted in louder sound than having it on. Another reboot fixed this, normal mp3 playback still works fine however. But my phone is now useless for playing videos.
Is anyone else having this problem?

Kinda similar to mine, but I don't have beat's on and off, nor is video having problems.
Try do a hard reset, once or twice to force it to "update properly"
It helped for me, not fixing the problem altogether but it became better after hard reset

I had this problem with my 8X. After the Portico update (8.0.10211.204), Beats Audio no longer functioned. Turning Beats Audio on/off had no effect. Music went from sounding completely AWESOME before Portico to sounding weak. I tried several Hard Resets to no avail. Got a replacement 8X from T-Mobile that did not have Portico, and Beats Audio worked fine. Well, two days ago I accidentally accepted the Portico update on my new 8X and am having the EXACT same problem with Beats Audio. This is so frustrating!
OP, you said a reboot fixed your sound issue? Does toggling Beats Audio on/off produce an extremely noticeable increase in bass and sound quality? For the record, I am having no problems playing videos as far as I can tell.
Well a hard reset did not fix my problem
@kpmblue7 When beats did not work turning it on actually made the sound worse! After a reboot or two beats started to work as I should again. Going to try flashing the ROM when the andriodfiles website is back up and then update again. If the problem persists after that I will be going to my carrier to get a replacement or possible exchange to a Nokia 920.

Nor did it fix mine. This is my second 8X with this issue. Very annoying. And to make it worse, NO ONE else seems to be talking about it (except this thead) so I don't know if it is ever going to get noticed and fixed. It would be a huge coincidence that BOTH of my 8Xs would have the same issue if it did not affect every single unit.
My Nexus 5 microphone does not seem to be working while in calls. What is strange is it seems to work jsut fine when used in Skype, suggesting that this is a software issue. Also strange is that when I turn the microphone mute on/off during a call, I can hear that when the microphone is muted there is less fuzzy white noise. Has anyone encountered this issue? Is this a defective device? I've flashed this device with alternative ROMs, and now I've reflashed it with the factory stock ROM. But nothing changes the behavior that I've described.
I discovered another thread on this that seems related to what I am experiencing: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2538979
Have you done anything to the device other than ROM flashing (flashed kernel, MODs, etc)?

I think the answer to that question is no. I mean, I had also installed various apps and the like.

Yep, you have the problem many people have encountered with their Nexus 5. I occasionally have this issue. It isn't as bad as when I first got the phone, but the microphone does occasionally go wonky during a call (i.e. callers on the other line say I sound really far away from the phone). The first 2-3 weeks I had the phone people would say all they heard was static while using the microphone (not speakerphone). It works better now, but the static/distant sound persists at times.
The consensus suggests it seems to be a software related issue that Google has not addressed yet.
Hey Guys -
Black 16GB Nexus 5 here. My in call volume using the earpiece is very very low since the 4.4.2 update. I have the volume maxed out and have already cleared cache, and even data reset once. Did not help at all.
The only way to use the phone making a call is to use a headset or be indoors in a very quiet room. Even then it's hard to hear the caller using the earpiece. I always have to use a headset for making calls.
I remember the in call volume being louder before the 4.4.2 update. After the update, however, the microphone functionality is improved and people can hear me better now (compared to 4.4.0 stock). However, it's hard for me to hear them.
I just wanted to see if someone else faced this problem or whether this is a manufacturing defect in my phone.
Thanks.

Do you use stock kernel/etc? May have been a bad update with software, may have to reflash if persists. But before that, try wiping data/cache of sound MusicFX (I believe is the sound production point) and reboot. Try again to see if sound improved. Check volume levels and settings as well.

Thanks for replying.
Yes I am on stock Kernel. Just used Chainfire's root to root the phone and unlock the bootloader. I used ADB/fastboot to apply the 4.4.2 update.
The sound is fine from the speaker. The music and everything else is fine. Even the notifications are a little louder in 4.4.2 than they were in 4.4.0.
It's just that the earpiece volume is very low while making calls when I have the phone to my ear. Everything else is great. The battery is excellent. I use ART runtime.
Should I reapply the 4.4.2 update using the ADB install method? Will that help? Can you please tell me how to wipe the cache of Sound/Music FX? I wiped the cache of the whole phone. I went into Recovery and Wiped cache partition. That did not help as well.
I am wondering whether this is a hardware defect on my phone or Google intentionally lowered the earpiece volume in 4.4.2.
Thanks.

Not hardware defect, volume is fine everywhere else as you said. Try redoing and push after wiping musicfx, this can be done by settings> apps> go to all tab>find musicfx> wipe. Try that first and reboot.
Ice looked around and it seems Kitkat has bug with Bluetooth volume levels for stock. My other solution would be, if you want, a custom ROM, or to check out ViperFX to replace the musicfx as default sound effects (under settings and sound tab) (which contains Bluetooth MODs and Super Quality mode). Personally used this and works amazingly with Nexus 5.

I've also started using viper4Android in the High quality mode. It works really well with Music. But it doesn't do so well when making calls with earpiece. The voice starts to distort, cut and crack. So while using calls, I generally disable phone speaker in Viper4Android.
I just cleared cache. Will try to install Android 4.4.2 again. As I said before, all sounds are ok (music, phone speaker call ring, notification etc). It's just the earpiece volume which is really low. Are you able to make phone calls fine using the earpiece (without using a headset)?
Thanks.

Yes, but Viper audio is best with Super Audio (its not battery draining as claimed), its just as normal as high quality yet call quality is excellent. Try this as well. I've used headset now and again, no issues so see how the reinstall goes. But I would highly recommend the super quality very much. Try and see if you like. Also, if you have no objections, custom kernels have great sound support (such as faux sound) that can also fix and greatly improve sound/Bluetooth quality. Report when reflash done and methods you tried.

Thanks for the suggestions. I installed Viper4android with Super Audio. It definitely makes a difference while using the headset. It doesn't do much to the earpiece in call volume. That remains the same.
Other than that I've cleared the cache and wiped cache paritition. Is there any way to just reinstall 4.4.2 on top of 4.4.2 again?
My phone is stock recovery rooted with chainfire's autoroot. When 4.4.2 came, I just installed it using ADB and stock recovery (update using Zip). Can I do this again without losing any data? Or will i have to reflash system to stock and then start over?
Thanks.
You can just fastboot flash the system.img

Thank you. If I do this, I won't be losing any data and the phone will work as is?
So I need to extract system.img from the factory image of 4.4.2 from the google servers.
Then the ADB command is:
fastboot flash system system.img
Could you please confirm before I do this. Thanks.
There is a thread in the theme and apps section which has a mod for louder volume on all outputs... Worked brilliantly for me
Hi friends,
I am using Xz3 d6653 with latest LP.28 . I am facing top(upper) speaker problem since 2month.
1. after updating .28 firmware the speaker sound gone low,
2. after sound gone low, then few days after that top(upper) speaker Crackling...
I tried all settings including equalizer settings and all the things,, but no solution yet.
Today morning I root my device (First time in my life) and flash "Sound Mod v6.0 - Sony Sound Enhancement" I got Xloud feature, and in call both speaker ringing very well, and stereo speaker loudness good while playing songs or video, notification sound also increased, everything well, I like the Mod, but the problem is still top(upper) speaker crackling (even in low volume).
I want your help to solve out this issue.
btw I have few question related this issue:-
1. can I adjust the bass setting for the speaker?
2. can I adjust any sound setting for independent speaker???
3. what setting can be adjust to solve the crackling sound (amp, sound frequency, bit rate, etc etc..)?????
your help much appreciate..
Thank you in dvance.

Normally, if you have a problem with a mod, rom or watever on xda the right thing is to head to it's thread, or the thread you got it from and complain there, you have a better chance of fixing it that way... As someone else there might have had the same problem or better still i fix might have been posted.
Regardless, even tho i havn't tried this mod, i have read in the thread that the said v6.0 has issues as u described and recommendation is people should flash back v5.5 as it was better. Even the OP of the said thread said he will fix in the next update.
Go to the thread here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3/development/stereo-speakers-sound-mod-v3-2-z323-0-1-t3015912) and follow up on the discussion. Read the last few pages. Goodluck
As far as I've been reading, it's a common problem on most devices for the crackling on the top speaker when loud, it happened on my first z3, so far it hasn't happened on my current one, I'll test later and see if it does happen and I simply haven't noticed.
Only way I've found to stop it would be to lower the volume. Or if you can somehow get an equalizer app that works system wide, lowering the bass may help.

Thank you friend.. I will let you know soon....
