After 5.0 hits all the Z3 devices i wonder if its actually possible to have a locked bootloader with functional DRM Keys on a Custom rom like CM12?
Sorry for this dumb question i am actually really new on all this android stuff! switched from an iphone 5 but i love my xperia Z3

In short no. It requires a working kexec and that has not been able for about 18 months now
OK, thank you for this answer! so how hard will it be to archive this goal? any possibilities ?

There are no need for features protected by DRM keys.
CM don't have those things...
That's the whole purposes of DRM keys...to hide Sonys features and innovations from third parties..
When you are using CM ROM or something that's not stock or stock based you don't have X-reality or stock camera app with low light processing, at least not developed by Sony...
DRM keys are overrated...That's just mechanism to protect code...nothing special...
So when you unlock bootloader system will wipe some of parts so other manufacturers or developers can't see what's under the hood and can't take that and implement them into their work...
Z3 powered by Tapatalk
True about DRM
But as for getting a working kexec, a lot of good people have tried and seem to keep getting stuck with the problem that we just do not have Sony's keys. Without them its impossible*. I would not hold out any hopes for anything soon....
*Obviously nothing is impossible, I could break RSA code given a powerful enough computer and few thousand years...
If you can backup the TA partition with a root exploit before unlocking the bootloader can you not extract the keys from that partition?

The TA partition is signed such that if you restore a TA partition with valid DRM keys, you also restore the bootloader lock. If you try to alter it in order to have an unlocked bootloader and DRM keys, the signature check fails and you've got a hardbrick.

The DRM keys seems to be endless mantra here... I will make an educated guess... People who invested almost 600€ into top notch phone and are keen on Sony bells and whistles will prefer to stay on stock with possibility to root on locked bootloader. People who develop CM or AOSP have other motivation than keeping on Sony proprietary code. They want they excellent hardware to run open and clean system. So they will not invest their time and efforts into breaking DRM for couple of low-light picture and X-reality frenzy. Not to speak about legal implications.. So in my opinion we are not going to see DRM protected code running on CM or elsewhere. And that's right. What is Cesar's belongs to Cesar.

Yeah, the only real "loss" from losing the DRM keys for many of us is that frequently Sony's cam blobs outright fail without DRM keys - and our approach to that is more political - we're trying to cooperate with Sony's devrel team to get their production firmware teams to stop making cam HALs that break catastrophically on unlocked devices.
A lot of us were REALLY annoyed when a GPE device (ZU GPE) had the camera break on unlocked devices. The problem is, working with the TA partition is fundamentally dangerous, and Sony does a GREAT job of bootloader security. Over the years, bootloader unlock exploits have become rarer and rarer and it just isn't worth the effort. There's a lot less effort and risk in unbreaking the cam HALs.

I understand the Sony politics but I am honestly convinced that they would greatly benefit from Open Source development community of they wouldn't make such big obstructions on codebase. Z series are amazing devices and would be even better with clean open high performance bloat free system.

When you say "our" bootloaders what do you mean? Community developed bootloaders or bootloaders used on the Thunderbolt in general?
So, is it possible for me to load a modified bootloader onto a Thunderbolt without it being rejected?

A little off-topic, but since HTC has pledged not to encrypt them, I've been wondering: could they, if they changed their minds, replace our current bootloader to an encrypted one, or would that also necessitate hardware to support encrypted bootloaders?

Could they? Sure. Will they? Don't hold your breath. They will more than likely only leave future devices unlocked. Either way, it doesn't effect us in any way, seeing as we can flash the engineering bootloader.

This is a misconception that drives me nuts. If the bootloader were encrypted it could not function because it just be gibberish to the processor. This is what encryption would do (using 128 bit AES, values are in hexadecimal, test value from FIPS-197):
Code:
Key: 000102030405060708090a0b0c0d0e0f
Plaintext: 00112233445566778899aabbccddeeff
Ciphertext: [COLOR="Blue"]69c4e0d86a7b0430d8cdb78070b4c55a[/COLOR]
On the iPhone, the iPod touch, and the iPhone 3G, the first-stage bootloader (LLB) checked the one above it. But, the LLB was not signature checked by the hardware in those models as it is now in the iPhone 3GS and up, the iPod touch 2G and up, and the iPad and up. What I want to know is if the Thunderbolt's hardware does this, too?

After our discussion in Bada section I look once in a while at your threads.
Sure that people tend to confuse authentication and confidentiality cryptographic services, but your understanding of the digital electronics is also less than scarce. The higher stages of the bootloader may be encrypted as they are often loaded to RAM before execution and there's no problem with decrypting it in the loading process. Specialized uCs may use some form of encryption in the pipelining process. Additional important factor is the difference between bootloader stored and downloaded - the bootloader before being stored to the flash (ergo the file containing the bootloader you may have) may be encrypted (as it is with the Wave bootloader we've discussed in the Bada section).

Is this what the Thunderbolt does? And what low level stages the booting process would not be encrypted?

That's not quite correct.
Sony did make bootloader unlockable but even then you'll lose DRM keys.
Yes, you can backup them but you can't use them on another ROM then stock.
Even, I have to say, Sony did great things to improve and fix those things.
Now you won't lose camera, x-reality or any othet features then online services (if you unlock bootloader)
But still...on new device (Z3/Z3C) you'll lose a lot if you unlock it and there's no way to backup DRM (for now)

It's the opposite. The camera has better quality with stock locked bootloader. It is something *more* that Sony added, and can be used only with the stock ROM.

Of course it isn't an accident, and you're completely right.
There's no law (at least not in my country) that states that I should be allowed to mess with my phones boot chain. Sony has made it possible to unlock the bootloader, if they feel that by doing so they are potentially making their intellectual property vulnerable then they have every right to try and protect that. Or, they could perhaps use it as an incentive for you not to muck about with your phone. Either way they're not doing anything that's illegal or wrong. It would be nice with an AOSP camera driver that worked as well as the stock camera does, but it's my choice if I want to give that up and experiment with my device, they are good guys for even providing me with that option in the first place.

There are people who've unlocked their bootloaders without reading, sure. To expect Sony to help them out of a hole of their own making is naive, especially as some people trying to retrieve their lost DRM keys are trying to reinstate the warranty they voided by unlocking their bootloader. As I say best of luck but don't hold your breath.

Users who lose their DRM keys only if they did not read the HUGE warning section in the official sony bootloader unlock page. SONY does bootloader locking to PROTECT what they have CREATED WITH THEIR PRECIOUS TIME as the DEVELOPERS at SONY are PEOPLE too and they want their work to be APPRECIATED and not replaced. If they do not implement this, people will go unlock bootloaders and do whatever they want. IT wont be called a SONY device anymore because of that....

Some people really want to unlock their bootloader immediately when they get their device, I understand that. But if YOU know that SONY only updates their warnings a few days later, then YOU should have waited to check on another day. You did not use any type of inference to create a valid petition. A petition should only be done when there is a serious problem. SONY has a lot of things to do and they have all the rights to adjust their policy at any point in time. You as the user should be patient and not rush things. It ends up in problems for you and there's nothing you can do about it but whine because you were impatient. The general society is like that. I simply do not understand what our world is turning to.... Just petitioning anytime and anywhere.

First of all, I have signed the petition and hoping Sony will release the fixes especially for the camera. I just bought this Z3 and this is my first Sony phone and I had no idea what the heck is a DRM keys. I saw Sony supported development by enabling bootloader to be unlocked but why the heck did they remove all their unique features? Yes they have the darn rights to keep their proprietary software but it defeats the purpose of allowing further development but removed their best selling features? My point is, might as well I pay a cheaper price for the China phones which hardware is equally as good as Sony for the development?
Development asides but I felt severely ripped off as I did not get any warning of DRM keys removal when I unlocked the bootloader and only after a few days, they updated their policy! Smart move to cover their arse huh?
Also if only they fixed the damn wifi dropping issues, I wouldn't even think of unlocking and root it just to have the temporary fix! Funny thing is I called in and they asked me to send back for RMA. Come on, RMA a new phone? I will never support Sony anymore.

DRM keys are licenses information for software like camera , x reality and 4k to check whether keys are in place or not. if DRM keys are not in place, premium feature of some of the preinstalled Sony software wont work to its optimum.
well you can sort of compare KNOX with SONY-RIC. The Sony's very own security system within android and if anyone tries to bypass that, Sony-RIC either reboots the device onspot or it shutsdown in order to stop hacking attempts.
Sony phones are pretty sophisticated and unlike samsung sony believes in "keep it simple" policy, so lot of info you might not get with pre installed apps., few of my friends coming from iphone, hated sony, others who came from samsung, dislike sony in the begining but soon they got used to it. yup. some people may not LIKE that you can't root a phone, but the actual percentage of those that won't actually buy the phone for this reason is minuscule.
otherwise, the first time a phone manufacturer sees their sales actually explode after releasing unlooked bootloaders, they'd always unlock it, but that's simply not the case
Ok I think you're being quite short sighted here, allow me to explain a little.
People who root their phones, usually the same ones who mod and develop ROMs and love a tinker, generally speaking the techie in the family, the one who your family tends to turn to when they have an upgrade come around or need something fixing.
Those very same people are more than likely to recommend a phone which has the ability to root, bootloader unlock and modify than they are one which has a completely locked down eco system.
You can say what you like, you can say I'm full of it, but I've seen how people react to a company changing its principles in regards to bootloader unlocking, HTC did this once, they then reversed their decision after seeing an immediate decline in sales, not solely due to the device either, it was the people's influence which caused it, then after two not so great phones later, they were a struggling company, and make no mistake, HTC was a colossal company which was on the up and up, bare in mind they made a lot of what android is today.
Huawei are making the exact same mistake because they overlooked how important that 1% is and the influence that they have over the vast majority of other users who value their opinion and will commit to a purchase on their say so.
It doesn't matter if you believe me, it's just an observation I've witnessed when HTC made the same decision.
Sure they'll continue, they make other components as well as phones, in all fairness they could stop selling phones and still survive.
But for XDA, for development, for what we know today of Huawei devices? Lol If you think it's quiet here on the p20 pro forum, wait til you see the ghost town of a thread there will be for the p30 and pro, I doubt there will be a single ROM, no Dev would be dumb enough to buy it.

Huawei is targeting the Apple clientele. They couldn‘t care less about bootloader unlocking. Look at their advertising, their USP is design, camera, beautiful visuals. They don‘t sell to the tech nerd who wants to flash different software.

Damn.
You may still be able to do something , there was a guide on the above link posted by a user which can unlock the bootloader by all accounts.
This phone is quite a beast and there could and should be another way in the future.
Plus Huawei will probably reverse their decision, that's not confirmed by any means but I think they will.
Funky Huawei ( which is normally not what I'd recommend) will probably see a lot more action now that official unlocks are gone too.
Don't worry too much, if it's still possible someone will find out.

I'm shocked. I received my phone today and wanted to root it and now I read this.
Maybe you guys can help me understand a few things because I haven't tampered with any Android device since 2014.
- will I be fine with the standard pre-installed EMUI or am I missing some really cool and better custom OS when I can't unlock and root my device?
- I've used Xposed, AFWall+, TWRP and XPrivacy on my old phone - are there similar and equally safe tools for unrooted devices?
- How can I make backups without TWRP?
- are there any known workaround procedures known that would let me unlock the bootloader without that code from Huawei? Is it likely that there will be one?
Thanks

Are there any other options for getting an unlock code at this point? I was thinking about purchasing a P20 Pro but may not if I can't unlock the bootloader.

Same question here. I have my Twilight P20 Pro lying here, unused since release in fact (so way past the return window) and meant to give it to my wife, but only with Root Tools (Adaway, YT Vanced etc.)
I missed the window since I was traveling and support won't help me.
I get it, my fault for not doing it in time but what now? I wouldn't mind paying for it, as the only other option appears to be selling the device at a huge loss (I paid full retail) and finding a different phone altogether.
Not seen this posted on here yet...

It's a confirmation to not rebuy any other phone from Huawei... That all for those who want a full control of the device.
For the major part of users, there no problem. The phone will survive to 1 - 3 years of daily use and that all...
This was my first and last Huawei device. F*ck em!
This was posted in may.....

Its an old news, just different writing.
well, this is my last huawei phone after all.
i will never buy phone which cant be unlocked/rooted
so xiaomi, nokia or oneplus it is
It's a decent article. I wish there were more.
Needless to say, no more Huawei.
.... For me.
lol is this legit? I doubt it is..
The patch01 was not intended to bork Magisk, just an accidental side effect.
It's really simple to make it work again - Just make sure AVB 2.0/DM-Verity is ticked before flashing.

like krs360 said, the patch wasn't to break magisk at all, what patch did was it accidentaly patched something magisk sems to have used or when patch was applied it could of writen over a file that magisk edited. Which then made phone unbootable with magisk.
It's like rooting phone and then run a update can also make the root vanish, since it writes over files that rooting has edited to enable the root access.
Come oooon.... This can't be real dudes...
I bought a Sony Xperia, rooted it and ****ed up my camera because of the DRM key problem. So I invested my time and ****ed the Sony security functionality, hacked their bootloader checks and patched it to get a working DRM fix. Result was: XperiFIX was born and Sony hates me.
Now I bought a P20 Pro and Huawei ****s me up with their change related to unlock codes. Damn... Seriously... This must be a sign. Hahahaha...
What about the name "HuFIX"? Hahaha...
Shiiiiiit... I think I have to spend some time on Huawei now.

I wonder if sony warned other manufactures about you xD, so huawei decided to stop providing bootloader unlock codes, because they knew you where coming lol
