[Q] Question about OTA prompt - is this T-Mobile ROM? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm on T-Mobile network, but my phone was purchased from the Google store, so not a T-Mobile branded device.
I'm rooted stock 5.0.1 right now, and wondering if this OTA ROM will be the T-Mobile version or just vanilla Google?
I'd actually like the T-Mobile version with the Wi-Fi calling feature - I've always been disappointed that unless I purchase a T-Mobile branded phone (exactly the same device) I can't have this feature. Obviously I need to remove a lot of the T-Mobile boat after the fact.
Appreciate replies.

There is no tmo version of any nexus firmware. And WiFi calling is not available on the n5.

[Q] T-Mobile Nexus S came with My T-Mobile app preinstalled in system partition?

Over at the Galaxy Nexus forums people are concerned that since the Verizon version of the Galaxy Nexus seems to come with the My Verizon Wireless app preinstalled in the /system partition, this means Verizon will provide updates to the device, not Google directly. Then somebody mentioned that his/her T-Mobile Nexus S comes with My T-Mobile app preinstalled in the /system partition too. Is there any truth to this? It would be good news for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus if in the past Google had included carrier-specific apps in /system and was still able to provide direct updates to that device.
I don't know about the T-Mobile one but my at&t version has no carrier brand stuff in it stock...I did download the myat&t app but it is not apart of the system.

No preinstalled T-Mobile apps on my i9020T. Someone probably downloaded it after.

I don't think this will have any effect on the distribution of updates.
The Vodafone Nexus One had carrier input on the updates (which did delay the updates) but they were distributed through Google still.
I would suspect that Verizon will supply the packages to Google to bundle with the update and they will be distributed as such.

The i9020T is the unlocked, generic version right?
Was there a T-Mobile specific version? If I remember correctly T-Mobile never sold it but I think BestBuy sold a T-Mobile subsidized version?

The subsidized and unsubsidized were identical - it was literally the same device. No bloat on it at all.
T-Mobile never sold it so it wouldn't make sense to include T-Mobile software.

[Q] Nexus 5 compatible in mexico?

Hello everyone, I just have a quick question.
I currently have a Samsung S3 (The AT&T one, I unlocked it, which calls and data works just fine), but I have been having some problems with it so Im thinking of upgrading to the Nexus 5 when it is available.
The problem is, I dont know if N5 would work with bands in Mexico (Im currently using Telcel carrier) anybody would tell me?
Also.. if I buy the N5 through google play will it come unlocked right out of the box?
If you buy a Nexus 5 from Google play, it will come unlocked out of the box. Just use the sim card in your current phone, and it should work just fine. I assume the bands would be similar to the ones on your AT&T S3 since the Nexus 5 was leaked to support a wide variety of bands.

[Q] Updating HTC One M8 overseas

I have an HTC One m8 verizon but I'm currently using it overseas in a gsm/global area. Since the verizon software update section says that I can only update using cdma, I can't update the phone at all.
What are my options in order to update the firmware?
And if there is no way, what are my options to at least keep up with the newer android firmware? Sorry if this is a common question but I've just jumped onto android from an iphone 4s and everything is still alien to me.

Questions regarding Android OS & Security Updates

So a couple years back on Black Friday I bought a Samsung Galaxy S4 from Cricket Wireless at a price of $200 and at first I felt like I got a great deal. I thought I was going to get the AT&T branded S4 (i337), but instead I got an obscure Cricket branded S4 (i337z). I was frustrated when the AT&T version received the update to lollipop but mine didn't. I'm looking to buy a new phone and have been doing a little research into it, but I still have a few questions.
1. Are unlocked cell phones more likely to get an android OS update than a carrier branded phone? Do they get them faster?
2. If I bought an unlocked Samsung or a Google Nexus, would I be able to update the OS without a Carrier OTA?
3. I've heard that Samsung & Google are now offering monthly security updates, do they rely on the carrier to push these updates or does it update directly from Samsung/Google? Will I still receive these security updates on a prepaid carrier like Cricket?
4. Are carrier branded phones even worth considering in your opinion?
Thank you for your time, and sorry for the newb questions.
Anyone have anything at all to add to this thread?

AT&T firmware on Unlocked version

I've been using the unlocked Z Fold 2 but in need to use Wifi calling which is missing so I would like to know if it is possible to flash AT&T firmware to get Wifi calling? If so, how? Also, will I be able to switch back as well?
There is no AT&T firmware available, nor will there ever be, most likely, which is why my unlocked Fold2 sits on a shelf and I use the AT&T Fold2 that I purchased from AT&T. Either live w/out wifi calling or switch to T-Mobile or buy an AT&T Fold2.

Aaaah, that's not what I was hoping to hear. Oh well, look like I will be buying At&T version of Samsung phones again..... even though I hate all the bloatware.

There's WAAAAYYY more Samsung bloat than the teeny weenie bit of AT&T bloat that's all disable-able anyway.
I solved ALL of my problems with AT&T on the U1:

Yes, it's absolutely possible. Has been since the Galaxy S8. All the US versions of Galaxy devices are identical. The only difference is the firmware, which is cross flash compatible.
Two caveats:
1. ATT firmware is not as readily available as other carriers, but it can be found. If/When Samsung upgrades the Z Fold 2 to BYOD firmware, that won't be an issue.
For now, check this thread for the ATT firmware:
F916U AT&T Odin Firmware Links
For those who don't know, F916U is the model number of all of the US carrier versions of the Galaxy Z Fold2 5G. The F916U1 is the model number of the same device, but sold by Samsung SIM unlocked and with no carrier bloatware. Firmware is 100%...

2. If you flash ATT firmware to an unlocked device, you will NOT receive OTA updates. You'll have to manually flash each new version with ODIN. ATT is the only carrier I know of that does this.
