I updated 4.4.4 --> 5.1, yesterday. I am stock/rooted. I have only encountered one issue, so far. I can't change the boot animation.
When I try to use Root Explorer to copy or move the bootanimation.zip to /system/media from my storage, it says, "Copy (or move) unsuccessful."
Then, I tried the bootanimation installation tool in ROM Toolbox Pro. RT Pro reports a successful installation -- but I've still got the stock 5.1 animation.
Is this a new feature of 5.1? Can anyone suggest a work-around?
Thanks!
(arrived from a Google search) I'm seeing the exact same thing on my device (Samsung Galaxy S2), looks like it's some sort of a 5.1 limitation.. :/

Try putting the bootanimation in /data/local
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
Thanks for the tip, but it didn't worked for me (same original boot animation).
Side note: applying boot animation with the theme engine DOES work, when I get more time I'll do some research on how to replace the boot animation of each theme...

Out of curiosity, did you use the correct permissions when you put it in /data/local, rw-r-r? When the device boots it looks in /data/local first then goes to /system/media
Sent from my Nexus 9 using XDA Free mobile app
Indeed, permissions were right, but still no luck. Before last couple of (ROM) updates I was easily able to change it on the fly, now it's strangely resisting.. ("unable to perform action" "insufficient space" and that sort of errors..)
OK... I'm the one who started this thread a while back -- and it just sat -- as did I.
Recent posts have encouraged me to try again -- successfully.
Here's what I did this time.
1) Moved new bootanimation.zip to /data/local. Permissions rw-r--r-- Reboot. No luck.
2) Copied new bootanimation.zip from /data/local to /system/media. Renamed old bootanimation to bootanimation.zip.bak Reboot. NOW it works.
Don't ask me why...

Well, thank you, Minnesota brother. Your post brought me to /data/local -- which I'd seen somewhere else lately, too.
That didn't work. But, for some reason, I could move the bootanimation from there to /system/media -- which I had been unable to do directly from storage.
EXACTLY the sort of work-around I had hoped to find. Uff da!
Well, I solved it too, but through a whole different way: the error message said that there was not enough space (¿?), so I deleted some ringtones found in one of the sub folders and THEN it let me paste the new bootanimation.zip .
Turns out that the message was not so unrelated after all. There was free space on the internal storage, but there seems to be a folder limit for System /media.. (¿?)
Apparently this is something very specific to this build/ROM, in the past I used zips way over 15mb and never was a problem.

Hello
I have a nexus one rooted with cm.6.00. Is there a way to change the boot animation? If so how can it he done and what is needed to do it?
Thanks in advance

I'm on the Droid, so not sure if it's the same... but I think it should be pretty similar.
The way I changed my bootup animation thingy, is downloaded the bootup from... some site. Can never remember the name of it. Mounted my Droid to the PC and moved the zip file to the root of the SD Card. Make sure it's named bootanimation.zip (not .zip.zip). Then use a root explorer application, and place it in the system/media folder. Overwrite the old one. I also replace the one in data/local. Not sure if it matters or not... but I do.
So that's what I did for mine. I have the aweseome Mario animation one. I love it.
Hope this helps.
Any chance you can give me a website link?

Having trouble getting this to work on Dell Streak. bootanimation.zip is read only and I can't seem to change permissions on the file. ???
Update++ Disregard. I installed a proper file editor with the ability to overwrite files (Super Manager) and presto. . . new animations!
bdh
I've not seen this listed in the continuum forums so I thought I'd post the link. I'm pretty tired of seeing Verizon every time I reboot my phone. The shutdown animations are easy enough to change but I've had little luck finding or figuring out the .qmg file thing. I was poking around and I found this thread in the Epic forums. I am currently running the Charge boot animation and it works great. The one hitch, after you install through recovery you'll need to go in an explorer, I use root explorer, to system/media and rename the your bootsamsung.qmg to something like boot.sam and rename the bootani.qmg file to bootsamsung.qmg. Hope you anjoy. Credit goes to nubecoder.

messed up somewhere
I did the whole rename thing but when i did it they came together(the names) then i didnt know which was which. Anyway some how i got boot.ani boot.sam & bootsamsung on there. dont know how to get back, any help would be much appreciated. Now all i get is the droid charge sound but no animation
The one you want to use has to have the .qmg file extension. So, it would be bootsamsung.qmg
Sent from my SCH-I400 using xda premium
Sorry please forgive my ignorance. What do I do with that file exactly? You said use it? How?
You use CWM recovery to flash it. Once flashed you need to rename the files as outlined above.
Sent from my SCH-I400 using xda premium
I did that, and the first reboot had started with the continuum boot then showed the droid eye, then came on. After i changed the names but somehow got boot.sam, bootani.qmg, bootsamsung.qmg all in the media folder. Now I can hear the droid charge boot animation just cant see it. Was thinking should i just reflash the DC07 rom. then try this again or is there an easier way? Thanks
No need to reflash the ROM. I'd reflash the shutdowns and repeat the process. I've not got a clue what you might have done.

Yeah. Es defaults to /sd card. In the app go menu settings. Under home directory, make it just say "/" then scroll down to root and mount system, and make sure voth are checked. Then you are good.

Wow, there it is. Thanks.
Next Question. I renamed the bootsamsung.qmg to boot.sam, which got rid of the boot animation, but I don't have the bootani.qmg. I reflashed the boot image I downloaded, and looked again but it's still not there. Any suggestions?
EDIT: I reflashed the file, and the bootani.qmg showed up. Kind of sweet. Wish I could use some of the custom ones that are out there, but I guess I should be happy I was able to change it for now, eh?
Friend sent me this a couple days ago, dont know where he got it buts a 3D twist on the whole android peeing animation. it looked almost at first like a 3D sprint bootanimation at first, then I laughed so hard I almost peed myself, ok maybe I did just a little and everytime I reboot my phone.

If your using a file manager app like astro file manager of root explorer. Open that and scroll down past the SDcard folder and below that you should see the folder "System". Select that then scroll down to Media. Select that and paste the boot animation to that folder.

I have never personally tried to make a boot animation myself. You can do a google search "how to create android bootanimation" that should give you some sites that can give you insight on how to create your own bootnaimation file. The 3D android urinating a friend sent me that one and I dont know if he made or found it.

If you are using Root Explorer did you select the "Mounted as r/w, r/o"?
You might have to select the grey box up top that says mount r/w and press it until it says Mount R/O, then it will let you paste. Try that and see if that helps.

If your phone is rooted "Root explorer" is the best file manager app I have ever used. It has a text editor/viewer(for xmls and build.prop) and it organizes files you zip or unzip nicely into folders. It isnt free though. Oh and most importantly it allows you to change permissions when dealing with system apps/files like the bootanimation.zip in system/media.
Edit** thought it over & I dont remember if you have to change permissions for bootanimation, but I did.
Ios suckkss.

Figured while we are waiting for some custom roms, we could still get a little custom action going on. I got tired of sprints boot animation and started playing w root explorer. Need root access, and a file manager that has permission to write to system folders.
You may want to back up the original sprint_bootanimation.zip to another location before copying any other files, just in case you want to return to stock. I ended up losing mine in a wipe, once I got it back I figured it would be a good idea to have one posted for anyone who needed it, see below.
Below is a link to the Razr stock bootanimation.zip (most 960x540 animations will work, as well as several other resolutions, play around and see what you find and like), rename it sprint_bootanimation.zip and copy it to /system/media. After it is moved change the permissions to rw-r--r-- , should be able to do this by long pressing the file. The other is an OGG file (do not rename), also copy this to /system/media folder. Voila, you now have the stock Razr boot animation whenever you boot your phone, sound and all.

That's odd, I assume you granted root explorer su permission. Maybe go into system settings, apps and clear data in root explorer? If that doesn't get it try es file manager, open menu, settings; close to the bottom of the list is root settings, check all the boxes. It will ask for su permission & you should be able to do it then.

Just a thought. Did you hit the Rw/Ro toggle in the upper right hand corner when you were in /system? People sometimes for get about that.
@OP, Here is a Pro-Tip that I have been using for a long time on a few different phones if you like to swap bootanimations a bunch.
If you drop your "custom" BA in /data/local and set permissions, it will boot up when the phone does. By doing it this way, you can test out as many BAs as you want and all the while your original in /system/media is left clean and unadulterated. I have collected a bunch over the years and have them on my sdcard. Another trick to put them in folders to easily copy over into /data/local at will. So it would be sdcard/MYBootAniations/Clockhell/bootanimation.zip or sdcard/MYBootAniations/RollerCoaster/bootanimation.zip.
Sometimes, I will drop one in my wife's /data/local and then the next time she boots up BAM!!! She is pretty saavy at these things, so it is shortly after bootup when I get a text or call.
Nice, thanks for that, I will give it a try.

As far as I know, the kernel maker has to support this feature, and it's not in the stock ROM. You have to go CM or similar for this feature.

Sorry, didn't see that. Use ES file explorer for the copying, it has good error messages. Make sure to enable mounting system in ES settings. You may need to download "mount system rw" from Play Store. You could also download Rom Toolbox Pro, which will do it for you, but it costs something like $5.

Okay this could be a couple of things...
First if your new animation is already named bootanimation.zip it won't let you overwrite the existing one. Delete the existing CM10 bootanimation.zip file in the system/media directory. Now you should be able to move the new animation file to the target directory.
If that doesn't work make sure ES File Explorer has the rights to make these changes.
Go to ES File explorer settings.
3rd from the bottom it says root settings.
Click on that and check all 4 things in the next menu.
Super User should prompt you allow access for ES File Explorer. Grant it.
Reboot.
Now you should be able to move the file you want to the media folder in the system partition.
After you put in the new file you may have to update the file permissions as well. I forget what they are supposed to be but I usually just check everything as read/write for all permissions options on bootanimations.
If none of that works...I dunno...come back with more specific errors you are encountering. Specific error messages, etc.
sheesh
I've done every instruction, followed them to the letter and the default boot ani won't even go away although i can find no hint of any boot ani files anywhere. it appears to function as it should, deletes the files, moves the new ones, file permissions are ok... there's just no change whatsoever, it's kind of baffling. my tablet may be possessed by he devil.
Waitwaitwait. You're saying there is NO bootanimation.zip in /system/media and it still has the stock bootanimation? Try doing a system-wide search for bootanimation.zip using CM file manager. If it does come up, note its location. If there is no bootanimation.zip in the correct folder, Android will play one hardcoded into the kernel, an image of flashing "android" text. So if there is no animation in the right place and you still see the stock CM one, you are putting it in the wrong place.

wowzers!
OK, so I realized that I didn't have cm file browser and did a search and finally did the nightly update. What a trip that was. It got stuck on the boot ani and wouldn't shut off or anything so I had to wait for the damn thing to run its battery dead. It starts and definatly has a different ani now. The whole new layout is messing me up bad, took me several hours just to get back online.
I have even more questions now.
BTW I'm on android version 4.1.4 now I believe.
For instance, apparently I still have all my apps installed because if I go to the store it says so and won't let me download them but I can't find them anywhere.
And some how I disabled that bar on the bottom that allows me to go back or switch windows and if I go into a program I can't get out of it because I can't switch windows.
HELP! AAAAAIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEE!
ok
I got the window switcher bar back, it was extended desktop option. Still can't see these apps I supposedly have instslled.
Oops. Sorry about that.

Like mentioned above - in LOS 13 from AndroidAndi it's possible to change/overwrite the existing bootanimation.zip contained in system/media. Done here with a nice Aurora Borealis bootanimation
