Phone would randomly shut off or freeze and last week it stopped charging/bricked? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sorry for the weird title but I went on a road trip up the coast of australia and 5 days in my phone just turned off at about 30% battery and wouldn't charge, no charge icon or anything. Before this it had been turning off or freezing randomly. It was rooted with CM, I took it to this guy in a small town who did phone repairs, indian, and he knew a bit about rooting and stuff, he put the battery onto a volt meter (is that what it's called?) and said there's enough juice that it should be showing that it's charging on the screen or start so he reckons it's bricked. Then he said he doesn't have the tools for un bricking (I thought once a phone is bricked it's ****ed though? and also I thought bricking happens during flashing of roms or kernels and not just during use?)
The only theory I can think of is that I was using a 2.1amp car charger, what do you guys think?
Thanks

It depends on your definition of "brick".
If you mean it doesn't boot up after flashing something, that is simply a "non-boot" or "bootloop".
If it does not power up at all, charge, or get to the boot phase, then that is likely a "brick".
Does it show up at all when you plug it into a computer via USB? Does any new device show up in Device Manager? (e.g. Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008, QHSUSB_BULK) Also make sure your drivers are correctly installed.

yeah it doesn't power up, charge or get to the boot phase I just thought it's weird that it didn't happen while doing something like flashing a kernel, I was just using hangouts. And no it hasn't come up when I plug it into the computer.
Thanks for the info, I guess it's bricked :/ could you offer any explanation as to why? Does it just happen?

How's the logic board, fried?

The most important queston was not answered. When you connect the phone to your PC do you see any new device appear in device manager? Like Qualcomm hs-usb qdloader 9008 or LGE androidnet... under the Ports title or qhsusb_bulk under the other devices title. If you dont see any of those or any other device upon connecting then it is true brick.

The exact same thing happened to me last week!
at first it would show the blinking red light when charging but now not even, though it sometimes gets hot.
it does not show up on the device manager.

Sorry I thought you meant if it comes up in devices and printers... Sorry haha, but no nothing comes up :/ it had a loose usb port and I haven't touched it in 2 weeks so I don't even know if it's charging or charged enough to come up or if it just doesn't come up, I'll let it charge for a good day or so but thanks, is there anything else I can do? replace the battery? I really loved it, I was in the middle of nowhere when it happened so I got an lg g3 and tbh, I don't like it haha

Well at this point it can be just a broken usb port on the phone or the whole motherboard is just a trash. You should see a new device appearing even wihtout having a battery.

My phone isn't recognizing a USB cable is plugged into the computer in fastboot

Hey guys, I have a softbricked Atrix2, I tried making a factory cable the other night, wired it correctly as far as I know, it turned on straight away without a battery into fastboot, but wouldn't recognize that a usb cable was plugged in (So power, but no data). And when I plugged in a normal usb cable with the battery in the phone still wouldn't recognize that a usb cable was plugged in. I am currently charging my battery right now, I wasn't having this problem before and am starting to think this phone is cursed by the devil himself . I'll be really disappointed if I charge this battery up and another problem arises, been waiting weeks for this charger. The phone was recognizing usb data cables without issue, tho of course I couldn't do anything because of the low battery, and suddenly it just stopped. Any ideas? Just don't want to spend all day trying to work this out because I've had a softbricked phone for weeks and only got to use it for all of about an hour .
More info: When I plug a normal USB in without a battery the white LED lights up and stays lit. Everything is pointing to power but no data... What would cause that and is there a fix
More more info: Battery OK
OK to program
Connect USB
Data Cable
Shows in device manager as "Unknown device", trying to force install of the "Mot single ADB interface" drivers just gives the error "The device cannot start (Code10), wont show up in ADB or RSD, and phone WILL NOT change status to USB plugged in. Time to think up a legit reason why my phone would say "Flash failure" and get a replacement?
A little more info maybe
What were you on before soft brick stock 2.3.6,2.3.5 or ICS???
How exactly did you soft brick it??
Have you tried getting the phone to start in the normal mode?(by pressing power+vol up+vol down and choosing boot normally???)

Went from 2.3.6 to stock 2.3.5 to OTA 2.3.6 to OTA leak to SCV7, phone kept crashing, tried to fxz back to 2.3.5 stock, said completely successfully but just bootlooped so I went to try again but the battery was low, so that's how I softbricked. And me being the impatient person I am I tried to make a moto factory cable with 2 non standard cables (Micro usb end from a mini to micro converter and the other end from something else), I'm sure I wired it correctly but I guess not, it booted into fastboot without a battery, but said connect usb cable, so I tried to plug in a normal usb cable (tried different ones) and it said the same thing. I shorted something out, the damage might just be on the micro usb PCB connector or it might be something worse. Yes I tried normal mode, no go, recovery works. So basically, my phone is now hardbricked because I'm impatient and screwed something up along the way. Now I have a 12 month warranty on the phone, can someone help me come up with a believable story that'll get me a new phone? Keeping in mind the phone boots into fastboot with (flash failure)
Trust me. The folks on the line at AT&T DON'T CARE.
Just BS your way through it. IE: I went to bed, plugged my phone in, woke up and the battery was really hot. Then the phone shut off and won't boot. Just play dumb.
All else fails. Hook that motherboard up to a car battery.

I bought it from a 3rd party seller (Mobicity.com.au). I think I might just go with "The phone kept crashing every 4-5 minutes, I tried to do the system update to 2.3.6 and the phone crashed halfway through, tried to turn it on again and it showed the Moto logo and something about a fastboot". Wish me luck guys .
Okay shipped it off, wish me luck guys, I'll keep you updated.
"Technicians needed to know which ROM used to update your handset?"
Not liking my chances with this at all. I got my dad to give them a call and act dumb, should be convincing because he honestly doesn't know what he's talking about. The phone says flash failed and he's denying ever flashing anything, I don't think a failed OTA update would give that error message so I don't think they're going to replace it..... .
EDIT: Dad called the technician and the tech said he's gonna fix it and that the motherboard was fried, looking good, phew!.
Update:
Your phone has been deemed unrepairable and as a result will be replaced by your place of purchase. Please contact your place of purchase and quote xxxxxxxx to arrange a replacement handset to be dispatched to you.

[Q] My HTC One S won't switch on

Hi guys,
My phone ran out of juice today. When I got home, I connected it to the charger, got about 2 mins of use from it (while it was charging), then suddenly the screen went black (back-lit soft keys stayed illuminated) and the phone started vibrating (softly).
Then eventually it just switched off completely.
Now it seems not be charging at all. The LED charge light isn't coming on. And every now and then while charged, the phone starts that vibrating softly thing. Leaving it connected to the charger for over 1 hour, it starts getting really hot!
Any ideas or am I screwed??
Thanks,
TD
The same happened to me, and the phone war really dead.
If you plug it to the pc via usb cable do you have a qualcomm usb download-mode peripheral? If yes, I really fear that it's gone... At least that was my case.
Sent it to RMA, and they changed my "logic board" (guess that's the soc)...
Edit: in my case, it didn't run out of juice just before, but the same is identical...
Ah that doesn't sound too reassuring lol.
I'll connect it to pc later today and check.
I figured it could be the charging port itself that is damaged and not allowing it to charge to properly?
If its out of manufacturer warranty, how much would it cost to fix, if at all?
thanks,
Nick

If it gets hot I would assume its consuming power or the battery is effed up. Are you able to access hboot or Have you tried to see if adb recognizes your device?
echó en Android
This sounds familiar but if I remember right it happened to me after flashing a bad kernel. It got stuck while booting and wouldn't respond to anything. I don't know how but I managed to resurrect it with a random combo of holding power and volume keys and plugging the cable in and out. After a while it booted into bootloader and I was relieved.

Galaxy S7 Fast Charge & MTP Not Working, Computers Cannot Recognize It!!

Hi dear xda users
I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 SM-G930F model and facing a very frustrating issue. The problem began a couple of months ago, when I woke up, the fast charging ability and any USB connection with computer was gone.
The steps that I've tried
1) I have tried it with multiple computers, multiple USB ports and ORIGINAL 2.0A fast wall chargers, can't recognize it,can't fast charge.
2) I have installed ADB drivers and all Samsung drivers, still not recognized, still can't fast charge.
3) I've tried to revert it to stock with stock firmware, stock bootloader and modem, even in Fastboot Download mode, still not recognized.
4) Last thing, I thought it might be the charging port (flex) is broken and I've had it changed with the same new charging flex in front of my eyes with a technician and still can't get it recognized or fast charged.
5) I have changed the settings and tried almost all combinations from the dialer menu *#8800#, still can't!
The device did not contact any water at all and I am beginning to think that motherboard is corrupt somehow.
Another bad news is Samsung Turkey Official Service Centers are denying to repair the devices that you bought from any other country (SHAME ON YOU SAMSUNG!)
They basically won't replace or repair anything with in my phone! (still, it is the same model that they sell in Turkey)
Have anyone faced the similar issues with me?
Only thing I know of is if you have USB debugging on, it prevents some USB functionality until turned off. But if you flashed stock, USB debugging should have reverted to stock.
And yes Samsung warranty doesn't cover grey imports, you have to buy locally.

Almost everyone in this forum has a rooted phone, yet this is an issue few have experienced. Rooting might be the first step they took to breaking something, but rooting alone couldn't be the cause otherwise you'd see way more of this.

U11 completely dead after OTA update

I've got an unlocked 128GB dual-sim HTC U11 (marking on the back says 2PZC300 U-3u), bought in Taiwan last year but I'm currently using it in Sweden (Europe). Haven't had any major problems up until now, except for some touch screen issues.
This morning I for some reason navigated into the update section of the settings menu, and saw that there was a new update available (I believe it was 2.42.617.1, containing the December Android security updates and "system enhancements"). My phone was not connected to the charger at the time but close to 100% charged and had Wi-Fi access. I downloaded the update and chose to install it. I haven't had any battery issues and it didn't prompt me to plug the phone into a power source.
It proceeded to start the update, but somewhere around 64% it seemed to get stuck for a while, slowly moving to 65% or so after a few minutes. I then left the phone for a while and took a shower. When I came out of the shower the screen was completely black. I left it for a while, but nothing happened. I then tried to long press the power button, but it was still dead.
Now it seems to be completely bricked. Power button does nothing. Volume down plus power button for 2 mins does nothing. Plugging it into the charger does nothing. When I connect it to my Win10 PC using the USB cord it does show up as "COM3" and the driver is "Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 (COM3)". It is not recognized by HTC Sync Manager. Feels like I'm in deep ****... And I haven't in any way rooted it or installed anything custom. I'm so disappointed that something like this can even happen.
If anyone here has any ideas I'd be eternally grateful... I'm hoping I won't have to send it in, since that probably means I'll be without the phone for a month or something and probably lose all the data on it (some photos which have not been backed up)... And I'm not even sure if I can send it in here in Sweden. Since it was bought in Taiwan I guess I might have to send it back there.

Hi Centrino! Thanks for your reply. Yep, I guess I'll have to send it in. I did try to google a bit and that was the feeling I got as well, that it really is hardbricked and very hard to fix. Was the repair covered by the HTC warranty? If not, what was the cost of the repair? Did HTC say what caused the issue? How long did it take to get the repair done? Sorry about all the questions but I had to send my U11 in to the HTC service center here in the US and I wanted to understand the cost and turnaround time. Thanks.

Yep, I'm in Sweden and they didn't charge me anything even though the phone was bought in Taiwan. They did not say what caused the issue, just repaired it and sent it back. Unfortunately I lost all my data. It took a little bit more than a week. The repair center in Europe is located in Poland so I sent it to a Swedish "agent" and they sent it to Poland, considering that the turn-around time was very good.

Wow! Seems like EU HTC customer service and repair center is much more considerate and positive experience than the US counterpart. It's a damn shame. Maybe HTC isn't as big a company in the US and not as popular in the US than it is in China and Asia and even the EU.

I did a quick search on the HTC "Uh Oh" warranty and the U11 is not covered. Oh well.
I am still holding out that the fix for my U11 will not be too complicated and that HTC will have pity for me. Ha! Next week will be 3 weeks since the phone was admitted into the repair center queue. In the meantime I have my new HTC U12+ and I've been using it for the last three days now. I've not toyed with the U12+ and will be keeping stock for now.

Question Phone struck in Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 mode, bricked

After update the phone is stuck in QDLoader mode. Phone doesn;'t turn on but if connected to laptop/PC, shows this in device manager
Go to a service center. Especially if it was an MIUI update

Thank you for the response, however tried this one still nothing. Going to bring this at a service centre. I suspected the same thing as every unit does.

If it doesnt boot to edl automatically that phone is aleardy paper weight. You will need to replace the whole motherboard as the SOC is probably ded.

Just an update:
Still did not boot, after long hours lol. what I did was reworked/reballed the cpu and ram replaced thermal pads. And now it came alive. Got back to a lower watt charging brick. My warranty ended long time ago and service centre says mobo needs to be replaced and the cost would be like a second hand device the whole of it.
