[Q] Touch issues when using pen-enabled apps, anyone? - Shield Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I really really wanted to love this tablet. The disappointments have been many, but this focuses on the most severe and frustrating one.
Whenever I am using Dabbler, Skecthbook Pro, ArtFlow, or any other pen-enabled apps, the weirdest things start to happen. It works OK for a while, but then the tablet only starts receiving input from the stylus. Not even UI elements are usable with my fingers. PLEASE NOTE: I do know the tablet has a stylus-only mode, and this is NOT enabled. PLEASE ALSO NOTE: No, the stylus-only mode in the apps is not enabled either.
After a fresh reboot, I open the drawing app and everything works. Palm-rejection is gorgeous, pen accuracy is spot-on, multitouch gestures as pinch to zoom and panning work flawlessly. But after a while, or after I exit the app and return, it starts progressively degrading performance. At first it only accepts pinch to zoom like 50% of the time. Then it gets worse, until I can't do a thing without the stylus - not even the back, home and multitasking buttons.
I spoke with an nvidia tech support rep, and after a back and forth of emails (mostly me giving him info about the proof of purchase, serial number, etc) he told me to contact the seller (Amazon) and ask for a replacement.
I was about to go ahead and replace it, but I wanted to know if any of you are getting the same issues. On the latest official ROM, can everybody use Dabbler, Autodesk Skechbook, etc. for PROLONGED periods of time, and with a high tablet up time, without issues? Is this issue device-specific?
THANKS so much for any help and sorry for long post.

Happy with my HTC TP/Raphael!

Hi Guys,
I now own a HTC TP/Raphael for two weeks and am extraordinarely happy with it! I waited about 1.5 years to finally find a machine that mets all my needs and wishes.
I want to thanks all you guys, because I read this forum months before I finally bought the thing and was very pleased with all the info, pro and con, you all posted!
I bought mine in Holland with Tomtom v7 bundled.
Common problems I faced and how I solved them:
1) Problem: Slow GPS Fix (10 min). Solution: Found Quick GPS pre installed on my device, ran it and have a fix now within a cool minute.
2) Problem: HTC picks up or cancels incoming call in trousers pocket. Solution: Installed AnswerDisabler 0.5.1 Thanks to the programmer! It works a treat!
So now I can clear my jacket pockets of the weight of a huge HP iPAQ 4700HX and my compact camera Canon IXUS 850. (The latter I still take with me on occasion, but for the odd picture opportunity, the HTC suffices.)
I'm wowing my friends on a regular basis with this device, showing of the nice TF3D interface and G sensor app's.
Okay, I might still have a small inconvenience left, but I will post that in a separate thread.
Thanks again and keep up all the good work!
Emiel Ratelband?
I too am a happy customer with my Touch Pro.
I faced a few slightly different inconveniences:
1. The Web Browser tab in the TouchFlo does not display the graphics. This is the screen where the YouTube icon. I've update the graphics with GIF files of a few of my more common websites and reduced the size of the images. Works after a power down but not after a reset.
2. Battery performance is still not as good as I was hoping but definitely better then my Dopod C730. I've already done the performance tweaks and this has indeed improved the battery performance. I use the device with push mail for my office email. I also enable 3G and disable Bluetooth.
3. Screen brightness under direct sunlight is bad. Can't do much about that one.
4. The TouchFlo sometimes "hang" with a black screen or frozen home screen. Haven't figured out why yet.
Other than that, I love my new toy.
I am another happy customer and the issue of the battery I dont have actually... I am in Hong Kong and bot the TP at the sole authorized retailer and not a parallel import so therefore my TP is branded which is a pain in the butt. I don’t want to flash the ROM as I’m a newbi at WM stuff so if I screw anything up, I’m dead. Also I don’t know how to get into the registry even if I install Total Commander and stuff… but back to your question….
My beef:
1) I don’t use the TP 3D and I use the standard WM screen. However, ONLY the browser Opera has the auto rotate function unless I slide out the key pad…. How annoying is that? I have found a forced rotate application which is SPB Phone Suite but I don’t want to use this as out of this entire program I only want is the force rotation function… so I’m still searching if there is a app to just force rotate the screen.
3. You can actually, if it is on auto adjust brightness. Turn it off because it toggles between 30-70% which means that you have 30% more brightness if you adjust it yourself with the slider.
@sgsdebruin: No, no Emil Ratelband. (Dutch happy-guru a few years back). Just thought it would be polite to let all the people, who spent time to do this stuff for the community, know that it's appreciated. I know it works for me if others are being appreciative so...
@kelvgoh:
1) No problem for me.
2) Battery performance could be better, yes, but I'll have it on the usb a lot anyway for synchronizing with Outlook at work, so it's not so big of a deal. I'm also thinking that battery life of a device is inversely proportional to the screen resolution.
3) Screen readibility in sunlight. Yeah, that's not so good. The screen of the device is not anti-reflective at all, what makes it really sparkle if you haven't reflections in it, but if you do, then it's bad. (See also some of the Youtube video's of the HTC. In many occasions you can clearly see the camera it's filmed with.)
4) I lucked out there too. No problem.
Fact remains that some HTC TP do have weird problems (1 and 4) and others don't. You can read more of those freak problems on the forum. It looks like the production process is not making consistent devices every time.

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, that also increases the battery usage. Sigh, can't have everything.

Must try and tweak the device more. Thanks for sharing.

[Q] Issues and questions

I just received my TF about 5 days ago and I'm a little disappointed with some things. Maybe it's my fault for not doing enough research, but I thought I had. I spent about a month reading and watching reviews. Anyway, I read that honeycomb was so great at multitasking. Yet, I feel like I have a first generation IPhone when it comes to multitasking. I was using Skifta and Moboplayer to watch television from my windows media center. I thought maybe I could fire off some emails and just listen to the show in the background. As soon as I choose gmail my video stopped. I noticed that with a lot of programs. I choose one and the other stops. Is there a settings that I'm missing? Also, after play my video files using skifta and moboplayer I lose the sound after about 10 seconds. I thought it was completely gone, but when I had the bluetooth headset on last night I could hear the sound really breaking up, like the TF didn't have enough processing. Well, I really doubt that because I would suspect the video would go before the sound.
The google voice recognition on my HTC hero with Cyanogenmod nightly build 6/27/2011 (112) is just superb. On my TF I have to talk really slow and it is rare if it gets it right. I don't know if it has to relearn my voice or if the microphone isn't as good?
I purchased the keyboard for the TF. It is very slow with delays. Sometime it just flakes out. It causes my cursor to jump to different spots quite often. I thought maybe I was bumping the touch pad, so I started to peck type and it was still happening. It gets better if I shutdown the TF and restart it with the keyboard attached. Is this normal or do I have a defective keyboard? Also, It seems like I have to hit the keys extra hard to make sure it registers.
Video chat?? Where is it? I thought this was Google proud OS. I can't get Google voice, Google talk video to work? Why do we have two cameras on it?
Granted I'm new and many of these things I'll probably discover along the way or there will be fixes. I only mentioned a few, but there are other issues with this device.
Is there a better rom than the default one that someone would recommend that might resolve some of these issues?

Touch Capacitive Panel (bottom pad)

Hello to all, am going to ask if anybody of you have a problem in TPs Touch Capacitive Pad? I used this app
Nav Debug Tool by HTC
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2511016
To check out this multi touch stuff in my TP (though I know before that it has a multi touch feature, I just want to check if it's working properly) but it seems that the pad has a problem. The problem was sometimes, it can register my touch and most of the time, not.. sometimes it can register the multi touch, and most of the time, not .. even the nav wheel has a problem which doesn't register the rotation most of the time. Is this a common problem in TPs or even Diamond??
I even use the signed os WM6.1 but still has a problem.. so I wonder if any of you guys having the same..
thanks!
It's been happening to me for about a year already as well. Seems like it's just defective. It resets thought after sleeping the phone and waking it. I'm not sure if it was because I used to use Sensor scroll or it's a little scratched up.
I hear the d-pad was a good conceptual idea but that is about it... I personally don't use the d-pad at all because of this, much less any of the buttons (to include the power button). On the other hand, from what I can tell about the d-pad "sensor" from using the NDT(Nav debug tool), it does seem pick up points but it seems to not like repetitive touches. It almost seems like the sensor overloads the processor to the point that it fails in terms of keeping up with the actual location that is being touched; if that makes any sense?

that made sense but why would HTC permit a buggy front pad???
You know, it seems many phone brands/cooperations come under fire due to lack of something or another; maybe proof of concept? Perhaps the debug tool is to blame? Or even the sensor degradation over time? One can only speculate so far before it becomes a volatile thought... Again, I point out the idea being good, conceptually. So, I don't know where that exactly puts us as being end users? Then again, I've never really had a decent experience with phones, much less with newer phones; my thoughts and expectations may be slightly on the negative/lesser side of things because of this.
I have the same issue. I used to use GScroll to flip pages in e-books, but finally it got so buggy I had to dump it (other GScroll features were almost impossible to use). I've used NavPad DBug. What I do find is that running the compact heaps command of SK Tools will temporarily fix things, at least most of the time. When I have NavPad DBug running, if it's logging compact heaps will clear out the traces. Somehow or other, it cleans things out when the nav pad gets confused or overloaded with inputs. But even compact heaps doesn't work all the time.
It would be sweet if the capacitative area really worked, but unfortunately it appears to get worn out about the time that you figure out all the things you can do with it. Lol.
Edit: I wonder if the device has problems distinguishing a single touch of your finger vs. several touches. That could really screw up the function of the device.

possible explanation for screen issues?

this may not explain all screen issues, but it may explain the issue of the screen freezing and also the issue of it reacting on its own. i believe that this screen is highly sensitive. my current theory is that dirtiness and dullness cause screen lag. this can result in freezing, but i think more commonly what happens is for it to cause a delay in the screens responsiveness. so lets say you touch the screen and it doesnt respond right away. so you tap the screen again, and it does respond. but maybe its responding to the first time you touched it, and then you exit out of that screen or do something else, and forget that you touched the screen again. but the phone remembers and responds, and the phone does something odd, seemingly on its own. now remember this is just a theory of mine, and i am no expert on touchscreens. it just occurred to me that this could be a possibility, because i cleaned my screen really good and the screen seemed a good bit more responsive than usual. feel free to share your thoughts and opinions on this.
There are times when a greasy/wet touchscreen will misbehave, but I think the majority of our touchscreen problems stem from a buggy driver which tends to crash during low memory conditions.
yea i definitely think its just a buggy phone. wish it was as simple as keeping it clean, but i have these problems even when clean sometimes. its not a deal breaker though, at least not for me.
i just wish we could have custom lock screens or AOSP lock screen that wouldn't break the damn auto-rotate.
i know this is a different subject than my op, but i have a question. i converted several apps to system apps. two browsers, opera mobile and dolphin mini, dolphin to replace my stock browser and opera for desktop browsing, as well as a volume control app and a few others. i use an app called optimize android toolbox to clean my cache. before converting these apps to system, they all stored a cache. now, opera and dolphin dont. the volume control app still does though. i dont think its a problem, it just perplexes me. any possible explanation for this?

Ayoteddy got us the aosp lock and the puzzle lock, using it right now no prob.
sent from my....WAIT THIS ISNT MY PHONE?
When it's cold mine never responds.
I put a screen protector on my phone and I haven't had any touch screen problems since. Might just be a coincidence, though.
before i got this phone, i read a review that said only one android phone has a more functional lock screen than the sidekick. of course, that statement is based on phones with stock roms, but still, thats definitely saying something. i like the stock lockscreen a lot. i like the media room lockscreen widget. tried other music players with lockscreen widgets, but they take up the whole screen. then you have to exit the widget to unlock the screen. plus you can slide down to unlock or slide up to launch an app. thats pretty tight.
I'm not saying the stock lock screen isn't clever. It's really is quite cool... when it works.
So often I've had to struggle to unlock the phone because the screen was lagging badly. Or the home screen has come up for a second before the lock screen. This is especially a problem when text messages come in, and often result in my phone doing crazy crap in my pocket. Next time I pull it out I discover that it's gone to CNN, changed my brightness, turned on bluetooth, etc.

Oneplus 6 - Unresponsive Screen (Video Included)

I've had the phone since the day it came out. It took me a while to notice but the screen is definitely unresponsive at times. It is actually difficult to notice because, if you are like me and spend hours on your phone every day, if every so often if a touch doesn't register, your brain automatically make you repeat the gesture and you don't even think about it. And, it's OK if it happens like once a day. But with this phone, it's hundred times a day. I thought I was crazy so I recorded a video with my OP5.
See here: https://imgur.com/a/lZS4eVP
OK so this is kind of a very bad occurrence. Usually, it's not always like that. Sometimes it works perfectly fine. I also wonder if this could be the reason why the double tap to wake is also inconsistent, when the screen is off.
Also, yes, I do have a screen protector, but I've had them on all my phones and never had an issue.
Looks like this is happening only with you, is this problem occurring only in specific apps? or globally..
The touch here works snappy and very responsive. Maybe a faulty device? report to service center, I guess.
I also noted unresponsive screen once in a while while trying to click some hyperlinks or items with small clickable icons. But it's not anywhere close to what your video showed. Best and fair thing to do would be: Fresh flash the stock rom, don't install any additional apps then see if the problem persists. If it does, time to call customer service for a replacement unit. Good luck!
I've had similiar issues with my Essential PH-1, turns out it was a defect in the digitizer and I was RMA'd on it.
Nope working great here.
Do I get a new phone if I rma it? Or refurbished?
No I get this sometimes as well. Not nearly as bad as shown in your video, but sometimes it just doesn't register the touch properly and you have to touch it harder for it to register. Or when scrolling it only registers the scrolling partially
i have same problem in the same position
It happens to me sometimes when I tap the screen (for example tapping on a contact in whatsapp) that the screen doensn't respond good. When I tap a few times more and with a little more pressure it's going well. (I didn't test without the factory applyed screen protector)
Do people who have this problem use gestures? For me, the problem also occurs (no reaction when I tap the hyperlink or a small icon) but I noticed that it only occurs when the gestures are on. Maybe there is a problem.
