You can use Titanium Backup to backup your user apps before changing ROMs, then after you've flashed your new ROM you just use Titanium to restore the backup you made earlier. You can't backup system apps or system data/settings though.

After restore app from Titanium Backup, can't find app's icon

Flashed new rom, use Titanium Backup to restore apps with no problem, but missing some app's icons, the rest of them are fine. I know they are restored cause I can see and run them on Market downloads.
Thanks.
Did you restore system data?

[Q] Backup apps+data from 2.3 to 2.2.1?

Hey,
I have the international version (I9000) of the Samsung Galaxy S, and I flashed the beta of CM7 which is 2.3.2,
I was wondering if there was a way or an app that can backup so that the restore works in 2.2.1?
You mean backup your apps and restore them? Or something else? If you are talking about the apps, yes, just download Titanium Backup. Be aware, with changing versions, you can only backup and restore apps, not system settings or any other system software.
So also the data of the apps will get restored right?
Anyone knows?

I haven't used TB in your specific situation, but it has always restored the user apps & data anytime I switch ROMs.

Actually I had experience restoring the WhatsApp app+data using TB from 2.3 CM7 ROM to 2.1 stock ROM. But WhatsApp reports corrupted data so I guess some app might actually change the data structure in higher version ROM. So be prepared when downgrading your ROM.

System Settings Saver App?

A link to a system settings saver app was posted in one of the development threads this morning. I'm trying to find the link but can't. If someone can provide the link to this app it would be greatly appreciated.
What are you trying to achieve? Backing up system settings and then restoring them after switching ROMs?
Yes sir that is what I'm trying to do.

Ok. There's a problem with that, you should never restore system data after switching ROMs, it can cause major problems. You can backup and restore user apps (with their data) without issues usually, but not system apps, or system data/settings.

What if instead I want to do the following?
I am not rooted, so I would like to find a way to do a backup of apps (and their settings) and of system settings, so that I can unlock bootloader (this will wipe everything) root and then restore the backup.
I am staying on he same exact rom, so i should not be a problem.
Is there a way to do so? Maybe HOLO BACKUP or something else?

Without root it's very difficult to make those kinds of backups. Helium claims to be able to do it, but only with user apps. I highly doubt you can backup system settings, and really that shouldn't be a huge problem, setting those up from scratch shouldn't take too long.

backup apps without using root

is there a backup tool similar to titanium backup to make backups of apps, but without the need for root? I need to make a backup before unlocking the bootloader from my Merlin.
thanks, guys

I would second Helium as a first choice... especially the Premium (paid) version, so you can backup to the cloud (my personal preference).
There is also Holo Backup for Windows and Linux, My Backup (Pro), CM Backup (stands for Cheetah Mobile, not CyanogenMod), Ultimate Backup, and others. Also, Titanium Backup can backup and restore apps without root.
Be aware that backing up apps is hit and miss, and some apps do not necessarily backup an app's data and settings without root... And restoring apps and data can be problematic in some cases
All in all, it is your choice, but I would recommend Helium Backup as well.

How To Guide Backup properly with root

I'm pretty decent with root ROMs etc, but I've always been **** at backing up properly. Any recommendations on apps (old or new) and instructions on how to backup and restore my phone so I don't have to relogin to apps, or reset up apps that don't keep my settings within apps that don't keep them even if they have a log in.
Any help would be appreciated. And no, google backup won't work. Doesn't do what I want

Hi, have you tried Swift Backup?
I always use it when I switch the ROM.
Not only apps and its setting, it can restore SMS, call logs and wallpapers though it can't restore entire system.

Haven't tried it, but will on next Evolution ROM update. Do you just not do a restore when clean installing the rim? Then root and install swift, and restore? That simple?

Yep. Just backup apps before doing clean install procedure.
And install Magisk on the new ROM, then install Swift backup and restore apps so that I can use apps just like before without any 're-configuration'.
