[Q] Wifi popup when using native hotspot. - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I keep getting a popup saying that turning on wifi will turn off the hotspot. I do not know how to stop this. It is very annoying as it pops up every 30 seconds or so.
I am running stock OTA lollipop update rooted with CF auto root. I used the app from this thread to get the native hotspot working: http://forum.xda-developers.com/spr...apps/app-gs5-native-hotspot-unlocker-t2980905
I have unchecked all boxes under wifi settings that could be causing it to scan for and try to connect to open networks.
How do I stop this? Could it be a 3rd party app causing the phone to request to turn on wifi?

If you or anyone figures this out that would be awesome. Ive searched and searched myself and have posted about this in the MOAR thread a few days ago. Thats the only issue I have is that. I also have WiFi tethering package instead of unlimited data so even without a 3rd party app or the unlock methods I still get that same popup but not every 30 seconds mine is more like every 5-10 minutes

I guess I will have to hope that a future update to android will fix this issue.

Well the frequency of these popups has gone down. Now its about every 10 minutes that the message pops up. Someone out there must know whats causing this.

[Q] MMS stuck on downloading but never downloads until a reboot

Didn't find anything helpful in the searches so...
Sometimes when getting a bunch of group texts or any MMS in a spotty data signal area one or two messages will never come through. On GoSMS there is no button to press to download and on the stock app it shows downloading with the animated bar but it never downloads. Rebooting the phone will seemingly reset the download and the button to press to download it will then appear. I prefer to not lose 5% battery from the media scan on a reboot just so I can get a group text or an MMS picture. So is there any other way around it other than rebooting?

I had that problem with the stock app. In the Messenger settings I turned off auto retrieve. I then get a download button and it works. For whatever reason with auto retrieve on it never downloads. Don't know if that's the same issue.
That will typically work, but then requires me to go in and click the download button every time. When you're in a group text that means backing out of it and opening up the individual's message thread every time someone replies to click download. Not really a good solution either. I'd say 95% of the time the messages download on auto for me. Any other ideas?
On most ROMS, you need to have Wifi off and 4g/3g on to download. That's why I don't use auto retrieve, so I can turn Wifi off and data on before I download

Ah that makes a lot of sense now. I am probably on WiFi most of my day so explains why auto retrieve never worked for me.
Thanks
I'm the opposite. About the only time I ever have Wi-Fi on is when I'm in Canada. I still have unlimited data on and 4G is much faster than my regular internet at home.

Mms over wifi is flaky on some roms from my experience. Works fine for me on roms that stay closer to stock. You shouldn't have to disable wifi to receive or send mms messages if things are working properly.

So no one knows a way to reset the download without restarting the phone?

Use a task killer (I know they suck, but just use it for this one thing) to kill the process and it should reset the download

I tried that via rom toolbox and it didn't seem to have any effect. Maybe I killed the wrong process though. Which is it for an mms download?

[Q] Why is my phone using 3MB of bandwidth while idle?

So, I realized that my SABnzbd downloads had slowed down substantially, and when I looked into the reason, it seems my phone is using about 3MB of bandwidth while sitting and doing nothing.
I uninstalled a few apps I thought might be responsible, and restarted the phone. I've not touched it since it booted up, and my router shows me that I'm currently using 375KB/s on this phone.
I have no idea what could be doing this, but it seriously concerns me.
I'm running Purity ROM, and will soon factory reset and try a different ROM, but thought I would ask about this before I do anything else.
Ideas/thoughts?
Go into WiFi advanced settings and turn off scanning. You could also turn WiFi off when screen is off. I just turned off scanning. PS it helps save power while idle

Even if the phone wifi is 'scanning' for a signal (it's actually connected, so it's not scanning for anything), it should not be actively downloading at almost 375 KB/s. It should not be downloading anything.
What else could it be?

Is it a one time event or does it continues all the time? If it's a one file event it's probably simmering syncing.

Whenever the phone is on, for the last few days. I suspect it's an app causing it, but I can't find any indication of which one. I think I'm going to wipe and install fresh, and probably try another ROM for a while. I'll install apps one at a time until/if the situation happens again.
There are apps to check data usage of each app. Can't name one. Never needed them. I always just accepted its the NSA and I try to stay away from my phone while in ze nude, as our German friends would put it.

That's what I'd do to. But I'm a little paranoid when stuff like that happens
Install this to find out what app is causing it. I'm betting one of the google apps. Play services loves to use data for no reason.

Thanks. That's telling me "Downloads" has used 66MB since being installed 4 minutes ago.
I'm not intentionally downloading anything, and when I checked the Play store, it doesn't seem to be downloading anything either. When I checked the downloads folder, there is one jpg (623KB) and the Amazon app store apk (4.99MB), and both have been there for weeks.
There is nothing else in this folder, nor any other indication of what is causing "Downloads" to be downloading. In the 2 minutes it's taken to write this, the amount has risen to 124MB, which is 98.1% of what's been dowloaded.
Very weird to me.
So the app is using DL's. DL's doesn't do anything by itself that I've ever seen. Try force stopping it then freezing it. That might make the app show up that's causing the issue. Might being the key word here. Weird indeed.

[Q]Connections Optimizer and Flash Player Update

Yesterday the Connection Optimizer started popping up an error box about every minute or so about needing to update the version of Adobe Flash on my phone to prevent malware. It then takes me to Adobe's site to download a new version, which of course, does not exist. I never even installed Flash on this device and not sure what the Connection Optimizer has to do with Flash/Security anyways. Either way, it is annoying because it just keeps popping up at random.
At first I thought it might be something with Dolphin Browser and having Flash enabled. I even tried installing the latest version of Flash that is modded (here on XDA) for use with 4.4 to see if that would fix it. It didn't. So I uninstalled Flash player and disabled it in Dolphin Browser and the prompt still pops up.
Anyone else run into this issue?
Just want to chime back in and add that a co-worker of mine is having the same issue on his S5. Seems to happen when device switches to Wifi.

Just turn off connection optimizer
All it does is switch you to Wi-Fi automatically every once in a while
Its a waste of battery imi

I get your point and that is what I have done. However, I do feel that if it is a feature on the device and is not working there should be a fix for it instead of just turning it off. Wondering why (2) of our S5 devices are having the issue but yet doesn't seem anyone else is, or at least not speaking up about it. Called Sprint and they have nothing on record of it being mentioned by others. As I'm still in my "trial" period with the device I want to make sure all sensors and features work as they should.

Wifi tether treve mod w/root still shows tracked on MySprint site

I'm a long-time user of Wi-tether Treve mod on Android 4.x with no problems. I just switched to a rooted Sprint Galaxy S5 and have tried MANY tethering methods, all with varying degree of stability (it seems like every 15 minutes or so connection must be reset by re-running app). As a result, I was thinking of reverting to Android 4.x, but I logged into MySprint website and looked at my account under "Analyze my plan". I'd post photos of the graphs, but can't post image links as I'm a new member. Data usage shows it had been tracking/counting my hotspot usage on the S3 (as high as 12GB in June!) Now I'm not so sure what to do with my current phone. Is there any foolproof tethering solution that's under the radar on S5?

No. The native hotspot hack works at best for about 10-15 minutes before needing restarting and DOES not work on 3G. And likely is tracked as it uses the native hotspot.
In fact, this is mentioned on the link you posted... "I have had mixed reports about the tether packet counter being disabled, some people reported the hotspot goes down after 10-30 mins when you disable the packet counter."

Dude I have been using it for the entire time I have owned my S5 on Sprint. My Hotspot never drops, I can play hours of COD BO3 with my PS3 tethered to the phone, I use it as my main source of internet when out. I have never had any issues with this. If you use my modded version that I posted there, the packet counter gets removed when you reboot. Also, updating your profile, or doing anything like that will reset everything.
I just checked my data usage, and for the past 3 months it shows 0 gigs used of 3G/4G while on hotspot. There are some months that show hotspot data, I may have missed something on it, like resetting the packet counter.
Or, they may have implemented another method of detecting the usage. I know the "ItsOn" has some tether things in it.
The native hotspot definitely works in terms of getting you on the internet. And I never have been disconnected.
About your account showing hotspot usage, that could be a huge array of things that may or may not be possible to remove.

Phone Automatically Reboots (Data Usage Unexpectedly Stops Working)

Hey Guys.
Been having problems with my Z5 E6653 (5.1.1, Build: 32.0A.6.200) Lately unsure exactly what caused it.
The device is NOT rooted and using stock firmwares.
The device will self reboot randomly at times, however it appears I can almost guarantee it will reboot faster and is reproducible by enabling and disabling the mobile data and when being used as a hotspot. The 'Data Usage' tab under 'Settings' does not work it goes to open then force closes and says it stopped working.
Anyone have any ideas? You guys tell me where to get the logs from and I will post them here
One last thing.. In before someone says "Factory Reset" I know it will fix this issue as it did in the past however I am looking for solutions to fixing this without resorting to a factory reset if possible. I don't have internet at my house I rely mobile data and hotspots.
Stuff you guys probably want to know about.
Some stock apps are disabled "Google Hangouts, Movie Creator, File Commander" (I don't use these at all and until locked bootloader root is available they will be disabled until deleted with TB. I have disabled notifications for some downloaded apps namely games like Cut the Rope and so to remove silly toast and push ads.

I had something similar happen in LP, I suspect related to disabling some of the bloat. From your list I disabled all save hangouts, try to reenable them all then only disable one by one. Can't you upgrade to MM though, it appears this has been solved.

Yea I tried that didn't work. Ended up factory reset. Well MM isn't out on the Telstra operator. Been waiting for it though read a lot about bugs so I'll hold off until the kinks are worked out. Cheers though.
Not sure I agree that's it's been fixed - I'm on stock MM and have a random reboot at least once a week - normally when playing audio (PowerAmp) when connected over Bluetooth in the car.
