4 hours 40 mins screen on time. Enough? - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My OPO on XNPH05Q gets average of 4hours & 30 mins SOT on stock kernel. Is it enough?
I see people getting 7 hours SOT, how is that even possible? :crying:

It all depends on how you use your phone, your signal strength, and other factors.

I've never managed to get more than 4 hours of SOT, regardless of kernel, ROM or usage patterns, so I'd say it's quite normal. If you leave the phone's screen on and don't touch it at all, then you'd probably be able to get more SOT.

I've always gotten about 6+ hours of screen on time with pretty heavy usage. Battery life seems to be wildly inconsistent with this phone.

Roughly an hour of playing a non-graphic intensive game (8 Ball Pool), 1.5 hours of web and miscellaneous use/music for the rest.
Edit: If I use the phone less, I get more standby time but less SOT.

I've gotten better than this but this is all I have in screenshots. That's with lots of Tapatalk, a fair bit of low-intensity gaming (Words With Friends, etc), Facebook, Chrome Browsing.

Since my last full charge, the battery's been decreasing very rapidly. Only 50 minutes of SOT and it's already down to 45%. It looks like Android System is using it all, and sending/receiving many packets over WiFi. Not sure why.

Do you have an app like BetterBatteryStats installed? It's really good at identifying wakelocks.

You guys shouldn't let your battery discharge that low, keep it topped up

I do. That was purely for testing, and it's ok to do it occasionally. In fact, you should do a full charge cycle (100v0^100) about every 30-40 cycles.

I put mine on charge once the phone reaches around 15-20%. Modern rechargeable batteries should have some safeguards in place to prevent the cell from discharging past its threshold voltage, but often it is unreliable. I get terrified when people bring in their completely dead HTC, Nokia or Sony because it doesn't start up even when plugged into a charger for a long time. And for some reason, ~70% of them never do. But people bring in dead iPhones all the time, and when you plug them into a charger it displays the low battery icon, then boots up, almost guaranteed. If not, then a replacement battery fixes it if nothing else is wrong.

I had to restart my phone to install it as a system app, and BBS only shows stats from boot. Looks like I'll have to wait till the next time it's fully charged.

My problem is that overnight, phone untouched, wifi and 3g on, I lose 1% per hour!!!!

Mine loses 6% overnight, so I might have the same problem as you.
Update on that wakelock thing - looks like it disappeared after I installed BBS. It's almost as if it knew I was onto it and went into hiding...

I'm loving the battery life with this phone, I'm averaging about 1.5-2 days on a charge with 4.5-5 hrs screen on time. On stock 11S, with greenify, slight underclocking (the built-in performance manager), wifi on all day (off at bedtime, on in morning), little mobile data, no bluetooth. Usage is mostly twitter, facebook, tapatalk, Chrome browsing, Google+, the odd bit of light gaming, nothing too intense really.

Why leave those services on overnight? They use battery, so it's only natural that you're going to experience battery drain.

Battery was 28% last night, the phone gained 3% overnight when It usually drains 2%, no usb connection as you can see in the graphic. What could cause this behavior? I’m just curious.

Perhaps its an issue with your battery controller. It was projecting a certain loss of battery but when it did not after waking from sleep it assumed it had charged and displayed a higher %?
That is completely conjecture based in no fact other than those made up by me, so please take it with a grain of salt. =)
i'll keep saying this, but nobody wants to look at the nexus s battery driver code. seems the phone is based off voltage tables, which fluctuate under load, and hence when you charge to 100% and unplug, it drops to 97%. because the voltage drop.
same could apply to this situation, very often you can see your voltage drop like that. especially if you left the phone idle all night after using it hard prior. voltage drops then increases.
Yes, I was using maps very hardly (at least in comparison to the rest of the day) and that’s the reason of the fast drop in the graphic, then the phone went sleep for almost 7 hours. I’ll take a look at what you’re saying about voltage tables. Very interesting info here.

you were using maps right around the time of that drop? then yes that's the reason. i wasnt directing the "code review" to you lol, just more of a general thing that was discussed in the forum previously. sorry
but this would definitely show, in my opinion, why there is also the 100% to 97% drop when taking the phone off the charger. voltage drop always ocurrs here.

No reason to be sorry about, I didn’t take it that way; I just like to learn new stuff about how things work.
its the battery meter. you probably rebooted. the battery meter in android is known to be inaccurate. sometimes after a reboot it can gain or lose percentage. ive gained 25% before after rebooting! in reality, you didnt gain anything, its just the meter being off by a bit.
I just want to know how you get nearly 4 days of use out of a charge!

I haven’t seen this after reboot, this happened after awake and it wasn’t sudden. Phone without signal in the graphic is the “airplane-mode” It wasn’t off. I know that battery didn’t gain any charge, of course, It’s just the weird behavior of android reading battery information.

it would be awesome if you could test this if you dont mind. turn your screen brightness to max, make sure your on 3g and not wifi, open google maps and scroll in one direction for about a minute or 2, check the battery percent and voltage. then turn off the screen, leave it sit for a few minutes, then see the percent and voltage readings.
maybe try a test a few times just for fun...you wanna place as much load on the phone as possible, so maybe even turn on the camera flash?

does any body else has an easier way, or can recommend a market app to test the battery life by using full features?
Quick test here:
Beginning with 3728 mV, stress the phone a little and It drops to 3622 mV, then I let the phone sleep for couple of minutes and after wake it battery shows 3730 mV. It seems to show higher values than those that were present before sending the phone to sleep. What could be said about that?
I’ll do another test with full charge and more stress, but for the moment, my phone is charging, yeah…. Finally.

its too bad my app (my sig) doesnt work for the nexus s, because i just recently added real time voltage vs current graphing, taking 2 second readings, for these exact circunstances. its fun doing these types of tests on my n1. but the battery driver and model is too different in the nexus s to use the app...
n1 doesnt use voltage at all for percent readings, but my hunch from code was the nexus s does. that's why i was so curious. check out some screens though for fun. you can really do some interesting tests with such high sample rates.

Battery now dying...

So I'm like wtf all of a sudden my battery is like at 40% by noon, and I recharge and it gets to the same within a couple of hours }
I don't get it not even a year yet
BTW I'm stock froyo/ rooted
Bad battery ? Any one else experience this? I have juice defender set CPU
Battery stats say main cause is "cell standby" any tricks to fix this?
No I'm not going to gb
meh...
Well, in the end, that's the best that froyo can do for the G2X...
I had Froyo and i pulled off 6hrs, when i got GB i was able to pull off 8, so yea, juice defender really wouldn't give you that much more battery life, the best shot is to upgrade the ROM.
i would consider updating it :/ i've never had froyo but since i've been using gb i get 15+ hours out of my phone and that's with heavy texting, internet browsing, some netflix watching and a little gaming. but cell standby seems to be my biggest problem too i wish i could fix that

Running froyo I was getting at least 14-16 hours.
Usually bad battery life can be accredited to less-than-optimal user settings, heavy device usage, or there's a rogue app that's sucking your battery down.

and as you can see i still have about half a battery left. the only precaution i really take is that my brightness is almost down to zero. and on my old phone it used to show in the battery settings if i used a certain application such as internet or ebuddy. i have no idea why it won't show those on this device so you can't see my heavy internet usage, gaming and some netflix watching.
and just for reference i'm running complete stock no root or anything. i'm now on one day and two hours worth of battery with 30% still left

Hey OP, can you post a list of your apps? Use listables. I want to compare it against mine. If there are any similar apps then I'm going to disable/uninstall mine and check battery life and report back.
Have you tried booting into recovery and erasing battery data? That greatly improved battery life on my Nexus S after it had undergone multiple ROM flashes.

The ROM you're using is a huge matter. With CM7, i couldn't go a day without charging. Now, with MIUI, I'm pretty sure I can get 3 days, with normal brightness, and my normal use, which is email and texting.

Nexus 5 battery problems

Hi. I have a two-months-old Nexus 5 (stock ROM & kernel; rooted). Two days ago my battery suddenly started having some problems. First of all, it doesn't last more than 1-2 hours with normal phone usage. Then it often becomes hot, even when not charging. Last but not least, if I keep using my phone while charging, it charges incredibly slowly, or it doesn't charge at all (the charge remains stable). I'm using the stock charger. Any suggestion?

The Nexus 5 has been proven to last longer then an SGS4 which has a bigger battery, and the HTC one with the same size battery (under proper testing conditions) all while using a faster SoC. Do you troll the forums for those phones as well?
Maybe a Moto G or LG G2 would suit some people better for their increased battery life, but that doesn't mean you need to troll every thread on here with false accusations.
If you'd like any more proof on how the N5 battery lasts longer and is more efficient than competing phones of higher prices, just let me know.

I experience the same issues. Not charging when connected or even lose charge when connected. I am still figuring out what causes it. First of all try using the original cable and charger. Second, disconnect the charger when the screen is on, I read somewhere that can help as well.
Today I had the same issue again, but just before I started charging, the battery would lose 1% per 2 minutes and my phone became very warm.

That is the problem. That particular wakelock belongs to Google Now. I hope you don't use it, because the solution is to turn it off (from within the program). You could try force stopping and/or wiping it's data. But the fact of the matter is that it's a bug in the app.
Google Now has been this way since it was released. The only conclusion I can draw is that Google doesn't care. It's never behaved properly. And that location reporting (that you've now disabled) is completely out of control, been that way for a year now. I actually greenify the Google apps now. I'm tired of putting up with the lazy programming. Keep, Now, Chrome, Drive, Maps, I greenify all of those. I still allow them to sync, but Greenify will kill them again after they are finished.

Take out your Battery, put it on a flat surface say a table. Try to Spin it....if it spins over 2 rounds then you need to buy a new battery.

Battery life.

How's everybody's battery life doing since you've had the new one? Mine has been pretty amazing so far. Haven't been using it hardcore but still using normally like how I used my older m7. Instagram, xda, updating apps, little gaming here and there, play music, camera and have gotten 30 hours off my first full charge all while on 4g, didn't turn wifi on once. Here's a screen shot of my usage. That flat lines on the graph is when I was sleeping. What's everybody else been getting?

How on earth?? I don't do any gaming, mostly facebook/twitter/instagram/texting/reddit with the occasional youtube video, automatic screen brightness and wifi 99% of the time (since I got the M8) and I'm lucky to pull 15hrs :/

I think I was doing better on my sgs3 with 3000 mah on aosp. time will tell if this gets better

Same here. I just checked the Battery History and doesn't seem to be accurate for me. I took my device off the charge this morning (first night last night fully charging) at 100% around 6am. It is now 3pm and have 38% battery life left. Looking at the Settings, battery, history info though my chart shows the graph starting between the 60 and 80 mark, says 4h 6m 40s on battery, WiFi shows full green bar (but wifi has been off all this time, wtf is this?), Awake in spurts, same with screen on, Mobile network signal faint green bar all the way.
Says at bottom 11am to basically 3pm so just started analyzing battery history at 11am today?
I think I was doing better on my sgs3 with 3000 mah on aosp. time will tell if this gets better

Yea, I definitely was also. Even on a battery that was a year old.

That's the new always on scanning they put in after starting with 4.3. It's not supposed to use a lot of power but you can turn it off in the advanced wifi settings.
Looks like my post got deleted somehow...
Oh well, here's my batt life as of this morning.
via my M8
After my first full charge I'm at 36 hours and still have 14% left
I can't complain..
Here goes my experience. I worked today and wasn't able to use my phone a lot..but i would say moderate use and moderate to heavy use after work. No root no s-off. Plain stock and I love it.

I was getting amazing results with jus the temp. root.
I recently did the s-off, custom recovery and perm. root and my battery life went to crap immediately.
Best battery life I've gotten so far and still at 25% with normal use
I'm getting around 17-18 hours after random used.
I've noticed no ill effects from perm root, s-off, or custom recovery. Things are just as good as always. For reference, I get anywhere between four to four and a half hours of screen-on time at medium brightness, no wifi at any point in the day. Coverage is so-so at my desk so it does search for signal quite a bit. I'm sure I could get more if I was in a strong coverage area. How badly did your battery life tank after perm-root? Were there any root apps you installed after the perm-root that could be affecting it?

I was getting on average 5-6 hours of screen on time. Yesterday I barely got 3.
I haven't installed anything since the perm. root, or changed any other settings on the phone.
No complaints here. This is the best day I've gotten. I have tweaked a few things.
S-off and root will never affect your battery life, there is literally no mechanism for it to do that. Anyone who says otherwise is lying, incompetent, or experiencing a placebo effect. If you want excellent battery life (mine was averaging 0.3-1.2% per hour with lte on) then turn off google now (at least turn off location reporting), you can leave location services on but keep it at low battery, greenify anything you dont need notifications for, and don't install apps you don't actually use. Get trickster mod, set the powersave core grouping thing to 1, thermal throttling on, and use powersaver 24/7. I have had powersaver enabled without *any* loss in performance (hide the icon too).
very happy with mine.

Screen on time

It's amazing how much we actually use our phones in a given day, especially when we watch "videos"! Rate this thread to express how many hours of screen-on time you can get on the Google Pixel 2 XL before depleting the battery.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

7+ SOT! Pretty crazy...
Here is mine from yesterday... Not really a heavy user.
Just curious - are all of using battery saving location mode?

I'm not either. High accuracy mode was on the whole time
Out (on LTE only, no Wifi) and about regular usage (web, news, maps/navigation) - 13%/hour ~7.6 hours SOT
Camera (because the camera is THAT great) + Google photos editing and uploading - 17-25%/hour ~ 4-6 hours SOT
At home on Wifi regular usage- 6-7%/hour ~ 15 hours SOT
So was doing some testing for battery life. Used it till it shut off just a few minutes ago. I had taken a screen shot at 1% about 5min before it powered down figuring it was close. I took the phone off the charger yesterday at about 6:30am. I am not sure why wifi shows as 0% but I have been on wifi most of the day. I really liked the old Android battery screens better that showed wifi and cellular signal strength data as well.
From my experience the SOT is not even the problem. How is the standby battery consumption? The thing is I get 10 hours SOT on my Moto Z Play if I do a lot. BUT if I use the phone only lightly I'll still don't get more than 2 days battery life even though you would expect much more.

Ambient features, how often your weather / email ect sync, how strong your cell signal is, how often your connected to WiFi instead of 3g/4g, and location services all affect stand by time.

Yeah I know but the thing is: compared to standby times of my iPhone 7 Plus the Pixel XL 1 standby was a joke.
I have installed basically the same apps on both devices. So I just hope that Android will finally catch up with Android 8, because up to now all Google initiatives to have better battery life were pretty bad.
That's why I would be interested to hear how this is going on the XL2.
This is going for 9+ hours sot!
Why can't I post pics? Says I don't have permission to post.

Mind sharing your settings/apps? I'm at the same percentage as you but barely getting 2hours sot :/ I don't think I have any battery draining apps installed besides instagram and snapchat. Maybe its standby drain? I lost almost 10% overnight (6 hours) and I'm not sure if this is normal.

You also have 10 hours more off the charger. I think that could easily result in the 1 hour difference in screen on time.
