Very dissapointed with Nexus 5 LTE speeds coming from Nexus 4 - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just sold my N4 and decided to upgrade to the Nexus 5 wanting a little more screen space and newer phone. After playing with it for a week i'm starting to miss my N4. The radio on this thing seems much worse than on the N4. I have weaker T-Mobile signal in my apartment and neighborhood but the N4 would do fine rarely dropping the connection an hitting fairly nice speeds. I was seeing 15-20 mbps with my old N4 using the latest hybrid radio. Now on my N5 the signal is constantly switching to HSPA+ and my LTE speeds are around 5 - 10 mbps. What gives anyone else experience this with the N5 or can suggest things to do. I am on 5.0.1 with the latest radio and really very disappointed. Battery also seems about the same maybe a few extra minutes screen on time but nothing major or great.
Thinking I might just ditch Nexus (I love the vanilla android and updates) but this is just frustrating me now. Might look at getting a one plus one or a LG G2 as I am tired of dealing with Nexus problems.
Anyone feels like chiming in on your experiences or suggestions would love to hear what you think. Very disappointed in the upgrade so far and wish I would have just kept my N4 going I was very happy with it looking past the smaller screen and bad battery.
Thanks

I have tried that and none seem any better than the latest one. I have flashed almost all of them hoping this would solve the issues but no improvement. I'm wondering if there is something wrong with the device? Seems like I am not the only one complaining about this but cant find any solutions other than getting a new one. The thing is I have 2 other nexus 5's with cracked screens and they all have similar speed/LTE issues.

I think a lot of it has to do with the radio and ROM you have. I have the same problem that I get stronger HSPA signals too. I haven't had time to really troubleshoot it though.

I think it's just a fact of life with the N5. I've had no less than 4 of them, and they all seemed to have trouble with LTE in places where other phones have no issues. I've tried different radios to no avail, so it's just a quirk I've learned to live with.

That's what I was afraid of. Hopefully 5.1 may fix this and some of the other issues I've noticed with this device. Glad to know its just not me. Thought the N4 had sketchy LTE with unofficial radio until I started using this device. Love the better LCD on the N5 but starting to want to find a phone that performs a little better especially with LTE speed and battery life. Can anyone recommend a device that can run Lollipop, has better battery life and do sent cost more than 300 bucks.

I'd recommend the Moto X but it's more than $300. I think with the current discounts they can be had for around $450, which is an incredible deal for what you get. I use the N5 for work and the Moto X for everything else. Both are great devices but the Moto X is far more refined. It runs near stock Android with some truly wonderful additions, has amazing build quality, and it has some of the best radios out of any phone I've owned, eg. no LTE issues whatsoever. If you can swing the larger price tag, you won't find a better phone.

Thanks maybe the Asus Zenphone 2 is what I should wait for. I love Nexus devices and flashing the newest factory images when they are released but wish there was a solution to this crappy radio in my N5. I drove all over town today where I knew I was hitting 40-60 mbps on my N4 (a devices that does not support LTE officially) and with my N5 my top speed was 17 and it was closer to 5-10 on most of the Speedtests. Really disappointing and honestly unacceptable in my mind. Wondering why more people haven't complained about this. Thanks for everyone's feedback on the topic.

So after doing a bit of research I went to the .17 4.4 radio and am getting better signal. The new radios I think aren't as solid because they try to "save battery" but in reality they make it worse because the signal isn't as strong.

Thanks will have to try this radio. Because I had 2 N5's with cracked screens but newer batteries I decided to swap out the battery in this phone and also changed the plastic piece on the bottom of the phone that I think acts as the radio booster and in doing so it seems to have improved my signal priblems. My speeds are now closer to what I was seeing with the N4 and signal is more reliable. Not sure if it was the better batter, the radio booster or just opening it up and reassembly but it is defiantly much improved. Now to decide if I should spring for the one plus one which had no invitation sales or stay with the N5. I hear the battery is just amazing on the opo.

I'd stay and wait for the one plus two

Nexus to Rezound, considering GSIII

My first Android was a DInc, loved that phone. Waited patiently through all the hype for the Galaxy Nexus, and was disappointed, mostly due to poor reception and poor battery life. So I ended up getting a Rezound. I really like my Rezound, but I'm considering a GSIII for the SAMOLED screen and better developer backing.
How is the reception and battery life on the GSIII? How is the screen? Anyone else coming from a Rezound or another HTC phone?
I mean no offense by this.. But there's a lot of threads already covering this.

Came from the Rezound myself, which I absolutely loved, except battery life of course. Sold it to buddy needing a smartphone and used another lines upgrade, kept unlimited. The SIII is a great phone in all aspects. The battery is good, mileage may vary as always, but I personally do "moderate" usage and get 14ish hours on average depending on what I do. I wouldn't say the radio is as good as the Rezound, my 4G speeds always seemed a bit slower, but could be because more people are using it, but overall reception for me is stellar. The screen is great, both on battery, in sunlight, and just plain how it looks. You will be happy. But also note the upcoming HTC DLX/DNA coming to Verizon.
the only two phones i can recommend currently is the note2 "coming soon" or the gs3. it really is a great phone, at least for me.
Sounds like the GSIII turned out better than the Nexus. My Nexus was about 10dBm worse in signal compared to my DInc. I was also disappointed the contrast on the display with the Nexus was worse than my DInc. I get about 36 hours average usage from my Rezound, stock battery. If I get a GSIII, it's off contract, so I don't want another dud.
I think the Note II would be too big to use as a phone all the time. I was thinking of setting one up as a media device in my vehicle though.

Hope this helps... but samsung has not fixed their cdma radios. Where i am at my rezound gets 15db better signal. Reception is still a huge concern if ur in an area where nexus had an issue. As much as i love this as a pda it sucks as a phone. Im patiently waiting for HTC DNA

HTC DNA. Wait for it.
From what I can find on the DNA, it looks nice.
I like Samsung, all of my TVs/Monitors are from them. But in the phone market, I feel HTC does a better job. There's a lot of great devs working with the Rezound, but the phone has been out for a year, and there still isn't an official CM9 yet.

I was about to say the exact same thing.....its troubling people don't do their own research or at least look up previous threads.
If you had an issue with reception on the Nexus, you'll probably run into the same with the S3, must be a fringe thing ..probably your area because where I'm at I don't have any issues at all with signal on either of mine, LTE I consistently see 85dbm or lower and data is solid. Have had my Nexus since launch (Dec) and the S3 since August.

At home service was alright. I used to get about -85dBm on the Nexus. At work, signal is worse. The Nexus would show about -105dBm where as both of my HTC phones show -93dBm average. If the radio is the same for the GSIII, that could be the deal breaker.

There is nothing "sensible" about HTC...stick with Samsung!
The S3 radio is indeed pretty bad in my experience. Currently in my apartment with -106dBm. Just had -114. It's great. It's fine on campus, but in some places here in Gainesville, FL.. . The rest of the phone is good though.
I have a Rezound and got the GS3 a month or so ago because of issues with battery life. The radios in the Samsung are indeed worse than the HTC. On the way to pick up the Samsung, I used my Rezound for navigation and streaming radio over 4G/3G with the TuneIn app. It didn't miss a beat the whole way (about an hour's trip from a 4G area to a 3G area). On the way home, the GS3 wouldn't get a GPS lock for a considerable amount of time ("Searching for GPS..." message on screen) and my streaming radio cut out three or four times.
I love almost everything about the S3, but the radios are undoubtedly weaker. I am fortunate to live in an area that this doesn't affect me very often, so it's not really an issue. If you do live in such an area, it might be something to consider.
I also just got an S3, and came from a Rezound with the extended battery. I loved the rezound, but after 8 replacements and each one with a serious problem, I got fed up and bought an S3. So far, I love it. I'm using the standard battery and I find it acceptable. It's alot faster, thinner, and reception has not been an issue yet.
I came from a Thunderbolt, and had a brief stint with the Nexus. The radios are DEFINITELY better in the GS3. Are they as good as the Rezound? Maybe not...but they aren't such a far cry as the Nexus was.

SGS3 lte upgrade to nexus 5?

Ive been eyeing up the nexus 5 for a little while now and since the patch has come out regarding the camera I'm more tempted again.
I currently use a s3 lte is it a worthwhile upgrade to the nexus 5?
How does camera quality and battery life compare between the two?
http://bit.ly/IOKdQ6
the N5 is a great device so far. the best, if you're coming from the rooting/unlocking angle.
I'm in the same situation, I have the sgs3 [I9300] international version, I already bought the n5, tomorrow it will be arriving, I will try and compare camera and overall experience such as battery, mostly camera as I am nearby a charger most of the time.

I just came from a GS3. I used it stock for a year, then on a 4.2 and 4.3 ROM for about 8 months. My GS3 was good at everything, so my main comment is that the Nexus 5 is just incrementally better at everything.
The camera is better, battery life is slightly better (though much better in standby), the screen is better, it's faster (and the GS3 wasn't exactly slow).
GS3 has a better external speaker and I did get better wifi reception on the 5gz band. Also, swappable batteries and SD card support is nice.

Thanks for the heads up.
I haven't seen a decent comparison between the two, so when I bought the n5 it was not clear what areas would it be better at, it's nice to know overall is better, battery life in my s3 has always been crappy so I actually use an 3600mA extended bat, I know that isn't possible with the n5 so that could be my first complain.
Camera is also a concern to me, as I like to snap pictures every now and then, nice to know it would be as good as this one at least.
As comment my sgs3 struggles with ram, it will close all my apps as it feels the need to do it, let's say watching YouTube or playing a game, it's annoying.
Anyhow, thanks pal'.

It's tough to remember my battery life on the original ROM, but with a custom ROM, it was a bit better underclocking. I never had any issues with mine. I bought a battery stick to carry with me when I think I will need more battery.
The speed is noticeable. There just isn't any waiting for multitasking.
The Nexus 5 camera I do think is better, though Samsung's camera interface is much better and offers burst mode and more customization. I prefer point and shoot, which the Nexus can be finicky, but there is an update coming any day now to fix this. Samsung still has the best front cam in the business though.
It's a better phone, but I think it goes to show how good the GS3 is for being 18 months old.

No competition in my opinion.

[Q] Should I buy a Nexus 5 and use it for AT&T?

I currently have a Note 2 on Verizon and have been thinking about switching to a Nexus 5 on AT&T. I had a bad experience with the Galaxy Nexus and have heard negative reviews of the N5 regarding battery life, reception, screen problems, etc. I am trying to decide between the N5 and getting a Moto X off contract for the same price ($349). I have to decide by the 16th because my $150 discount expires then for the Moto X. Please help. Thanks!

You are on a Nexus 5 forum, so it is likely that you will get biased opinions. Personally, I love the N5. I don't have any complaints at this time (Except for lousy service with Sprint - but that is not a device issue)
My N5 is in my pocket and my Moto X Developer Edition is at home. Moto X is a nice phone, but it's no Nexus 5.

I have both sitting on my desk in front of me now. One of them has to go back. Dev Edition Moto X on VZ and an N5 on T-Mobile. Honestly, both phones are great. I love the build quality of the X and it's the first Android phone I've used that actually has useful additions to the OS instead of gimmicks. The fact that it got 4.4 so quickly is encouraging as well. That being said, I've always been a Nexus fan. My first Android phone ever was a Nexus One. The N5 is definitely faster with a larger, sharper screen. The quick updates and huge dev support are big pluses too.
Neither of them has what I would call great battery life. The X might be slightly better. I had a Note 2 on VZ as well. It will blow them both out of the water in that regard. I haven't noticed any reception or screen problems with the N5 other than poor off angle viewing.
If you care about flashing ROMs and kernels you want the Nexus. I assume your code only applies to the standard edition X. You'll be lucky to maintain root much less flash anything without having a dev model. Not that there's a lot to flash right now anyway. Personally, I'll probably end up sticking with the X simply because I use a lot of mobile data. T-Mobile coverage isn't cutting it for me and getting 6+GB on ATT will be expensive. I have grandfathered unlimited with VZ and a big corp discount.

I am expecting it to be less than than the note 2 because the battery is smaller. However, I don't want to get a new phone that constantly needs to be charged. How long does it last you on average?
N5. AT&T. no reception issues. on a custom kernel. my daily battery life average is 18 hours on battery with 5 hours of screen-on time.
Stay away from AT&T with the Nexus 5, I only get about 46Mb/s on LTE and perfect call quality and reception everywhere I go
On AT&T and no issues with reception or speed.
I'm currently using N5 with AT&T with no problem with reception or speed. Also the battery lasts for a full day of use (14-15 hours). Of course it's not on the level of Note 2, but still given that it's a Nexus with incredible specs and a great screen (the colors will look a bit washed out if you come straight from Note 2, but they're more accurate in my opinion, and there's a gamma control app you can use to change N5 color), I'd say go with the N5.
On AT&T with my N5 in Maryland. I came from a iPhone 5 and HTC One. I have a 33 mile ride to work and its mostly county twisty roads. I always would lose my reception at 4 spots on my ride. 2 in one county and 2 in another county. I would lose it with my ip5, then with the One. I was just commenting to my wife, I don't lose the reception at all anymore. Now I suppose maybe more towers came online, but its a pretty big area I cover and the spots were pretty spread out.
I get 16 hours easy and by that time I'm usually shutting it down anyway, I use the Nexus wireless charger.
I don't have any experience with the Moto X, but I was close to trying that also. The sound on the One's speakers are really good and it has the ir blaster thing, but with all that I stuck with the N5, I just really like it.
I'm on stock rom, rooted and custom recovery.
I want the nexus the most. I left sprint for Verizon 2 years ago for the galaxy nexus. It had several problems and now my contract is up and I want the N5. I figured at&t would be my best bet for the network. I am just worried that the N5 will be problematic like the GN. But you guys are making me feel better about the n5 and at&t.

I have the n5 on AT&T, complaints! Great phone, battery gets me through my work day (which usually is from 9/10AM to 7 or 8PM)
I owned the Verizon GNex, and I can tell you that there is no comparison between that POS and the N5. Much of the GNex problems were with Verizon (or the fact that the CDMA radio made it different). Many people who loved the GNex had the GSM version. Most of the people who hated it had the Verizon version. They were that different.
The N5 is simply a work of art, comparatively. It's smooth as butter, has a MUCH higher build quality, and is wholly supported by Google. There are no CDMA radios to screw things up, and Verizon is completely out of the picture (as are other carriers) so updates will actually be timely.
I switched from Verizon to AT&T in preparation for the N5 (before it existed), and had an S4 (active) in the meantime. As soon as the N5 was available, I jumped on it, and I have been extremely happy. I have had no discernible signal issues. Battery life (for me) is better than either the GNex (with extended battery) or the S4 (standard battery), but wireless charging makes that a moot point, since I can just keep wireless chargers at home and at work, which provides a quick top-off when needed.
In short, don't worry. You'll love the N5. Don't let the Gnex scare you... there really is no comparison.
EDIT: Regarding the Moto X. Great phone also. In fact, I almost went that way myself. Active Display and always listening Google Now are awesome. However, 720p screen and no wireless charging were deal-killers for me. The N5, with its LCD screen is much easier to see in bright sunlight, and wireless charging... well... what can I say? I'll never own another phone without it. I would take wireless charging over active display any day of the week. However, you may be different. Decide which feature you'd like best and go for that device. You can't go wrong with either phone.

Thanks for the GN comparison. I have never tried wireless charging. How does it work?

N5 to OnePlus?

Just got an invite and I have until 3pm tomorrow EDT to make up my mind. Is this a worthy upgrade from the N5?
I really like teh stock n5 UI with Gravity box and Xposed. It's really smooth and flawless, with no crashes for weeks at a time. How buggy is the firmware compared to stock N5?
Is the increased CPU power noticeable?
if you ask me, its not worth the upgrade, i mean the phone is amazing but so is the N5, the 1+1 is definitely better but not worth an upgrade. I came from a nexus 4 and it was a very worthy upgrade
Depends on how much you value your money. I don't think that you should be upgrading from a phone that is less than a year old and is going to be getting an android L update.

About the only thing worth up changing to the OnePlus for would be the battery life. It does outlast the nexus 5 by a fair bit.
Other than that it's all a bit sideways really.
Mmm bacon
Lol. It's definitely worth the upgrade. This phone outclasses the N5 in every way.

Bigger screen, better battery, better camera....I did the upgrade and am very satisfied. Almost regretted that I didn't wait for the N6. But the price of it really is a turn off.

Well the N5 would go to my wife who is currently using my old N4.

Worth the upgrade. While I don't have one sadly. It is, Better battery life. More customisation out of the box. I'm on the Xperia Z1 waiting to get my 1+1.
I'm thinking about moving to this also from the N5. Is it as buggy as some of the threads let on? Yellow band, touchscreen sensitivity, ghost swipes... I don't mind flashing things here and there but I'd like something that "just works" most of the time.
I left the note 3 and am happy with this phone. Battery is just about the same for the usage I put it through. I miss the use of s pen for a few things here and there, but that's about it. Only regret is not having an external SD card, but an otg cable kept handy does the trick quite well. The n5 is a great device, I played with one for a while, but I would probably get this one over it if I had the choice. I've had no issues with yellow band or any loops. But for people who mess with their device issues are to be expected. Isn't that why we are all here to begin with?

The negative people tend to be more vocal.
Ghost swipes have been fixed, it was a problem on Synaptics, not OnePlus or Cyanogen.
battery life is a lot better on OPO than N5. its day and night difference.
I moved from the n5 to the opo primarily because of the battery life - well worth it on that front. Though it will take a while to get used to the size difference.

I'm somewhat in the same boat as you, I'm coming from my N5 to the OPO. Battery life was bothering me with the N5, I had Franco's kernel, Greenify, etc. and nothing would really help. I was lucky enough to get an invite and figured why not, I will pass any phone I don't use to 1 of my kids, so no loss. I really anticipated the N6 and I was very disappointed with the price and the whole carrier thing, I hate to be indebted to ATT, but at $650, buying it was out of the question. Anyway, I got my OPO a few days ago and have to say I'm really enjoying it. I unlocked the bootloader, loaded TWRP and rooted it immediately, it would be painful to do that after you've got it all loaded up. It's been extremely smooth, fast and responsive, I love the additional real estate thats a real pleasure, the battery is lasting significantly longer, but I will keep an eye on it during the next few weeks. I've not had any of the issues I've seen others have, so thats also a relief.
CM is a very thorough ROM and has pretty much everything I would want and will not even bother with xposed at this point. Now I think the headphone/mic thing is a bit of a pita, something to do with 2 wiring standards and OPO's choice, but both headphones I use are ok.
So all in all I'm pretty happy with my choice. Good luck.
I also moved from the N5 to the OPO. I sold my N5 for the amount of money I needed to buy the OPO so it was easy for me.
I did it for the camera and especially the battery life. Both things are exceptional on the OPO compared to the N5.
My main issue is the size. It was this or the gen 2 Moto X which not much bigger than the N5. We'll see how it goes. My wife can always use it and I'll sell her N4 for 50 bux.

I haven't had any problems at all with the phone and I flash a lot. Phone is the fastest and smoothest ever... Should totally go for the 1+1.
to OP: Yes, buy it and give the N5 to your wife. You won't regret it, plus, the newer 1+1s should not have yellow banding. I have no problems with my phone at all.

[Q] Buying advice

I was wanting an opinion, this is signal reception question. Which device has the better signal? I currently have a s4, and thinking of getting the Nexus 5 or possibly LG G2. Which one would likely have the better signal. I read many times that Samsung doesn't have good radios in them, though I don't know about LG
If you want phones with a good signal, avoid nexus devices.
Search the internet about signal issues.I dont think that the G2 had any signal issues, the nexus 5 did though and it was made by LG.
So as far as I know, both of these choices arent good. I am surprised that the S4 has issues, maybe you should compare it with something else, and find out if the problem is not the phone itself. Metal body phones have also weak signal strength.
I have heard the n5 signal was fixed with a recent update.
If I can't get the n5 then may get the g2 if it may have decent radio in it
Go with the G2.

Hard to say with how cheap N5s are / or are going to be soon. I guess I don't leave the city too much, but N5 has been fine.

Yeah I know, I have been told that the N5 signal issue has been fixed with the Lollipop update.
I just wonder how LG's radio stacks up against Samsung
carrier makes bigger difference
