Nexus to Rezound, considering GSIII - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

My first Android was a DInc, loved that phone. Waited patiently through all the hype for the Galaxy Nexus, and was disappointed, mostly due to poor reception and poor battery life. So I ended up getting a Rezound. I really like my Rezound, but I'm considering a GSIII for the SAMOLED screen and better developer backing.
How is the reception and battery life on the GSIII? How is the screen? Anyone else coming from a Rezound or another HTC phone?

I mean no offense by this.. But there's a lot of threads already covering this.

Came from the Rezound myself, which I absolutely loved, except battery life of course. Sold it to buddy needing a smartphone and used another lines upgrade, kept unlimited. The SIII is a great phone in all aspects. The battery is good, mileage may vary as always, but I personally do "moderate" usage and get 14ish hours on average depending on what I do. I wouldn't say the radio is as good as the Rezound, my 4G speeds always seemed a bit slower, but could be because more people are using it, but overall reception for me is stellar. The screen is great, both on battery, in sunlight, and just plain how it looks. You will be happy. But also note the upcoming HTC DLX/DNA coming to Verizon.

the only two phones i can recommend currently is the note2 "coming soon" or the gs3. it really is a great phone, at least for me.

Sounds like the GSIII turned out better than the Nexus. My Nexus was about 10dBm worse in signal compared to my DInc. I was also disappointed the contrast on the display with the Nexus was worse than my DInc. I get about 36 hours average usage from my Rezound, stock battery. If I get a GSIII, it's off contract, so I don't want another dud.
I think the Note II would be too big to use as a phone all the time. I was thinking of setting one up as a media device in my vehicle though.

Hope this helps... but samsung has not fixed their cdma radios. Where i am at my rezound gets 15db better signal. Reception is still a huge concern if ur in an area where nexus had an issue. As much as i love this as a pda it sucks as a phone. Im patiently waiting for HTC DNA

HTC DNA. Wait for it.

From what I can find on the DNA, it looks nice.
I like Samsung, all of my TVs/Monitors are from them. But in the phone market, I feel HTC does a better job. There's a lot of great devs working with the Rezound, but the phone has been out for a year, and there still isn't an official CM9 yet.

I was about to say the exact same thing.....its troubling people don't do their own research or at least look up previous threads.

If you had an issue with reception on the Nexus, you'll probably run into the same with the S3, must be a fringe thing ..probably your area because where I'm at I don't have any issues at all with signal on either of mine, LTE I consistently see 85dbm or lower and data is solid. Have had my Nexus since launch (Dec) and the S3 since August.

At home service was alright. I used to get about -85dBm on the Nexus. At work, signal is worse. The Nexus would show about -105dBm where as both of my HTC phones show -93dBm average. If the radio is the same for the GSIII, that could be the deal breaker.

There is nothing "sensible" about HTC...stick with Samsung!

The S3 radio is indeed pretty bad in my experience. Currently in my apartment with -106dBm. Just had -114. It's great. It's fine on campus, but in some places here in Gainesville, FL.. . The rest of the phone is good though.

I have a Rezound and got the GS3 a month or so ago because of issues with battery life. The radios in the Samsung are indeed worse than the HTC. On the way to pick up the Samsung, I used my Rezound for navigation and streaming radio over 4G/3G with the TuneIn app. It didn't miss a beat the whole way (about an hour's trip from a 4G area to a 3G area). On the way home, the GS3 wouldn't get a GPS lock for a considerable amount of time ("Searching for GPS..." message on screen) and my streaming radio cut out three or four times.
I love almost everything about the S3, but the radios are undoubtedly weaker. I am fortunate to live in an area that this doesn't affect me very often, so it's not really an issue. If you do live in such an area, it might be something to consider.

I also just got an S3, and came from a Rezound with the extended battery. I loved the rezound, but after 8 replacements and each one with a serious problem, I got fed up and bought an S3. So far, I love it. I'm using the standard battery and I find it acceptable. It's alot faster, thinner, and reception has not been an issue yet.

I came from a Thunderbolt, and had a brief stint with the Nexus. The radios are DEFINITELY better in the GS3. Are they as good as the Rezound? Maybe not...but they aren't such a far cry as the Nexus was.

Anyone Regret Buying Skyrocket?

Anyone regret buying Skyrocket vs HTC Vivid?
It seems like Skyrocket is very plasticky compare to Vivid. Vivid seems better built. Anyone went from Vivid to Skyrocket?
Any thoughts?

I exchanged my sgsII for a vivid on sunday when it came out. Didnt like the phone at all. So i sold it on craigslist for 500 and bought a skyrocket. It is alot better. No regrets.
Yeah, I exchanged my Vivid for a Skyrocket today. Not sure I'm really happy. Synching Outlook to Skyrocket is a PITA. Bluetooth seems pretty bad so far. Could just be the Skyrocket doesn't like the H17... I do like the Font sizes far better on the Skyrocket. Non-LTE Data is just as screwed up on the Skyrocket as the Vivid. Battery life seems better on the Skyrocket.
No regrets. This phone(had it 2 days) does seem slower than my sgs2(had it 2 weeks). Other than that I am enjoying the phone.

Had the vivid for 3 days and switched to the skyrocket.. that's saying allot for.me to switch since I love the sense ui with htcs.. I would choose skyrocket again in a heartbeat.. the vivid does seem to be built Better but that doesn't mean much when your using the phone lol
I purchased SGS2 i777 myself and exchanged it for Skyrocket i727 but still debating. Skyrocket is still in the box. Vivid as I mentioned on the topic that Vivid seems to be more solid and better built. I really like the screen of Vivid. Its very sharp.
The thing about Vivid is that lack of accessories. Even less than i727. Also there seem to be lack of support/development.
Don't know which way to go!
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk
After having owned both the Skyrocket and the Vivid for a few days, here are a couple of my thoughts. I hope this helps your decision process. This is all just my opinion.
I like the feel of the Skyrocket in my hand better.
The Skyrocket's web browser is not resizing websites when you pinch to expand. The Vivid does.
The Skyrocket's screen colors are brighter than the Vivid's, but light colored websites and text on a full white background is significantly dimmer.Reading ebooks is better on the Vivid, or,for that matter,my Inspire.
The Skyrocket has the charging/USB port where it belongs, on the bottom. The Vivid's is on the side. That's worse for charging cradles and using the phone while charging.
I like the screen resolution on the Skyrocket better. Fonts are easier to read for those with less than perfect vision. Some of the Vivid's Fonts are downright tiny.
The Vivid works flawlessly with my Motorola H17 headsets. Cyberon works great. The Skyrocket has been basically useless with the H17; how it works with voice command I don't know. This may be a compatibility issue, but still...
Synching to Outlook with the Vivid is painless and free with HTC Synch. Synching to Outlook with the Skyrocket is a PITA and costs $50. (For the third party PC program.) Perhaps there's a better way I haven't found.
Volume is FAR better on the Skyrocket.
Battery life is better on the Skyrocket.
The Vivid can turn Bluetooth volume down further. That's a big deal when on the phone with a loud talker.
Sense (Vivid) is better than Touchwiz (Skyrocket).
Both have data issues right now.
Both are plenty fast enough.
I switched from i777 to the skyrocket. Many regrets. Terrible out of the box XviD playback where the i777 was always perfect. I use a lot of CPU intensive apps so I notice the choppiness everyday. But I got a $45 refund and OEM earphones when I switched to the Skyrocket. Plus my gf got me a OEM external charging case + battery so it is too much of a hassle to switch back now. Other than the screen, it is a major downgrade for me until LTE hits my area 2-8 months from now. Then it will probably make up for it when LTE is working because I tether a lot.

I bought DICE player which uses hardware decoding and plays xvid just fine.
xvid isn't industry standard and divx is, that's why they didn't add a hardware xvid decoder by default. I consider DICE a good buy as I won't have to worry about whether my future android phones will support media format X.
I kinda' do have regrets...
I'll be 1 week into owning the SR tomorrow. This is my first Android, so there has been a bit of a learning curve. But I dived in and have learned a lot. I'm doing EVERYTHING I can imagine (or researched) and I get what I consider horrible battery life. 5 hours, 1 minute, 10 seconds on battery with all the power setting low, and hardly using it I'm at 21%. There is no way I can get through one day without a charge and theta won't work for me. I'm used to BB battery life and I was ready for a lot less, but this is worse than I expected.
Perhaps because I'm in a western suburb of Chicago (Naperville) and I do not get a strong LTE signal. Speaking of LTE... I'm averaging 5-6 Mbps up and 4-6 Mbps down... is that good? I ask because one time I got 25 up and 6 down when Ii was closer to downtown Chicago. I'm think of going to the original SGS2.
<sigh> well, I've still got time to decide.
Any other thoughts are appreciated.

Still no regrets. But for some reason I wanted my thin ole S2 back and I was tired of the lag and the picture was stretched a little to much for me. (Maybe I got a bad one) So I returned to local ATT store.
I was pleasantly surprised to find out that if you bought online and return to the local ATT store they do not charge the 35 restock fee. .....it gets better.
Then I went to target and he said the ATT S2 was on sale for 99.00. Bought it and now I am happy. To me the s2 just seems to be the right fit.

If you are getting those speeds you are on 4G (hspa+) not 4G (LTE). The 4g LTE will have LTE under the 4g. I also think that you got yours ups and downs reversed. Down will almost always be the higher number. And that battery life isnt normal. Try getting buying another battery and see if that helps.
skyrocket has crappy screen, i know that this is subjective but side-by-side with htc is not even close. i love the interface but i preferred the ADWLauncher EX home screen so it really doesn't matter.
having said that, the LG Nitro HD is really the way to go so I'm returning this hopefully within the next 3 weeks and getting that one.

I have the Skyrocket now for about a week. I went through a bad battery. Replacing it fixed the problem. Battery life is an issue if one does a lot with the phone but it is so in all modern smartphones. I think that the Skyrocket is slightly better in this regard.
I had carefully evaluated the Vivid and the Skyrocket before purchasing. Despite the fact that both phones have supposedly 4.5-inch screens, the Vivid screen is narrower, not by much, but notably so. The Vivid felt "more substantial" but having various HTC phones that died an early death, I am not sold on HTC quality. Not at all. The screen is much better on the Skyrocket and can be kept dim for most of the time, so it would not be much of a drag.
Neither phone has a way of switching off LTE. In fact, part of your problem may be due that your phone detects a weak LTE signal and spends an inordinate amount of power trying to lock on to the signal. This is well known to be an issue with power consumption on both of these devices. I do not know if this helps, but side-by-side reviews note that battery life is better on the Skyrocket.
In any case, Samsung has announced that it would soon update the phone to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream). It may be at about that time that AT&T may implement the NFC capability of the phone (which is attached to the battery for a peculiar reason). So, I would overlook any "software" issues at this time as there is going to be a massive upgrade in about 4 months.
I am not sure if Samsung is producing enhanced batteries for this phone. If one wants to keep the NFC capability, batteries much come only from Samsung, because of the firmware on them. But beefier batteries may alleviate some of the concerns here. Various firmware updates later on may fix other issues as well.
Personally, I feel that it is a great phone and it would have been much better if it had an LTE on/off switch. I was in Chicago last week and the LTE signal there definitely had an impact on battery life although the speeds were awesome.

I just tried DICE Player Trial on a few XviDs. Unfortunately, it does not help. Pretty much it has same or very similar results than the standard out of the box player. Videos that should have 29.97 or 23.97fps, all play around 15-20fps. If you want to see the striking difference, try MX Player, and enable software decode. The phone is powerful enough to deliver native fps with software decode. It is just that the hardware accelerated upscaled image quality is so much better, than the software upscaled image. Basically I want to have my cake and eat it too. Just like I did with i777. With i727, you can either take a hit on resolution, or fps. Maybe Ice Cream Sandwich can improve things? It is not that this phone is incapable. There is something not working right that is making this happen.

HTC Rezound vs Galaxy S3

I have both phones the htc rezound and verizon galaxy s3.....I have noticed from a network 3g/4g the rezound outperforms the Galaxy by far. I also noticed from a cell signal stand point as well Htc -90 and Galaxy s3 -112... This is aweful!!!!!!! the camera on the htc rezound outperforms the Galaxy s3 in my opinion as well...I sit here and scratch my head and ask myself why did I honestly purchase this phone...
I agree that the Rezound camera demolishes the GS3, but the GS3 is such a massively better phone, I don't miss my Rezound one bit.
the galaxy s 3 radio sucks, other then that the phone is great, wouldn't go back to rezound or nexus, battery life on rezound and nexus sucks requiring a extended.
In my opinion, he GS3 outperforms the Rezound in almost every way.

yea, the Galaxy radio sucks compared to the Rezound.
I have both phones myself & what really cracks me up is I was totally prepared to hate the pentile screen (every pentile screen I have seen previous to this looked like crap) but now the Galaxy screen looks better in most ways.
I have both phones sitting here on my desk at work. The Rez screen is a tiny bit sharper, but looks horribly washed out & lifeless next to the snappy bright G3 screen.
Besides the slightly better camera and much better signal in the Rezound, the GS3 trumps the Rezound in every other category. Even the touchwiz UI/features are actually pretty nice and are really cool to use.
I couldn't go back to my Rezzy. No way...no how.
The rezound did have a great camera. But I agree that the s3 is so much better. I mean it is nice to take photos with a phone but if I am going somewhere that I know I'm gonna take photos nothing beats a camera.

The HTC Rezound has better radios because it's been out longer and has had updates to fix it. The samsung just came out. Radios will be released to fix reception issues. As for the camera, there's no way htc is better. I had the rezound and this S3 is way better.
Good bye HTC, hello Samsung Galaxy S3

Yes I miss the rezound radio but it really doesn't affect me all that much. The battery life alone was worth the switch.
I'm currently considering upgrading my Rezound to an S3, but am worried about the radio and camera. It seems to vary largely from person to person. I wonder if the radio performs better in some areas than others? Perplexed.
I had a rezound... Have not looked back.
I don't miss Sense, I don't miss always plugging my phone in whenever I'm near a cable, I don't miss having a thick heavy phone.
I think while the rezound reports better signal, in my experience I drop from 4G to 3G at the same frequency and in the same areas. I had a Nexus prior to the rezound, and returned that due to the radio issues. I do not see these same issue with the S3.
The S3 is smoother, quicker to load up apps, and a much nicer design. I haven't had any issues with the camera, I love the burst mode with best shot selection, and the panorama mode seems a lot nicer to me.
I had the rezound for about 2 weeks and returned it for it the g nex. I don't know if that says much but out of the g nex and the rezound I would much rather have the s3. Give it some more time and cm10 will be an official DD and you won't look back.

Neither are an issue...people tend to blow things out of proportion, just like the media. The radio has great 4g, slighlty weak in 3g. Full signal Im seeing -66db signal. The camera takes a great pitcure and the TW interface is nice. You wont be disapointed, overall this device blows anything away I had prior.
Hmmmmmm......so far its been opposite for me. My rezound....would show full bars on 4G....I would jump on the internet...be there for like a minute....then bam......network error.
Looking at the status bar....there would be nothing...then 3G would pop up seconds later.....And sometimes it would stay stuck on 3G and had to reboot for 4G to come back.
It would do this switching thing all the time ...and it came to be annoying.
Since getting the S3 on the 10th.....I haven't had any issues with this annoying switch. Its only swithed a few times....and only areas that I knew to be bad 4G areas, but went right back to 4G....as soon as I left the area.
I must be the only one so far whose rezound is cursed. :cyclops:
I'm inclined to agree with the OP on this one when it comes to Radio. The radio is TERRIBLE on the S3 and I live in a VERY strong 4G area. I get 3G spots that I didn't have before. I realize that there will be updates to address this issue. I did return my Gal Nex S to go back to my Rezound. The cameras are about the same IMO.
I don't care for Touchwiz or Sense. I dropped in NOVA so it would feel more vanilla. And this phone is so damn fast.
Finally. Look at your S3 screen. There is no phone like it out there. My friend puts there iPhone over my screen and there is still some screen to spare. That's a phone!

Any former Samsung Galaxy SII owners?

i have a samsung galaxy sii right now and am deciding whether or not to upgrade to the siii. are there any major, noticeable differences? i don't want to fork over $200 for a slightly larger version of the phone i already have.
is the display brightness similar to that of the sii? one of the main problems i have with the sii is that it is too bright for viewing in the dark, even at minimum brightness.
does it overheat easily? another problem i had with the sii
is the battery life as bad as the sii?
and that's all i have for now
thanks you

I just upgraded from an Epic 4G Touch (Sprints SGS2 variant) 2 days ago. I haven't had it long enough to have all the dirt, yet, but I can offer few opinions. The most noticeable differences to me: ugly as sin, slightly faster (in everyday use), slightly better battery life (I was getting very good battery life on my E4GT, and this thing seems to be even better), the buttons are shallow, and having a physical home button is lame. I can't comment on the brightness or overheating. The bootloader is locked, which is something to consider.
In my personal opinion, I wouldn't upgrade. I would have kept my E4GT and been perfectly happy for another year if Sprint's network wasn't complete garbage. The hardware upgrade is marginal and not worth the money, in my personal opinion. I'd wait for the next big thing. Also, if you have any of the cosmetic gripes that I do, upgrading is even less desirable.
Night time brightness is better than the sgs2. I had the Epic 4g touch, the battery life is much better. There are a lot of software features that really set the Sgs3 from the Sgs2 for one I've gotten 5000+ on quadrant with the stock kernel so this phone is very fast. Anymore ?'s ?

I feel like this might have been a little harsh but mostly accurate. I switched mainly because of Sprints ridiculously bad 3g. I loved my Epic 4G touch BUT the Internet was slow, the camera was slow (unless using custom apps) and the screen was dismal in direct sunlight. Versus the S3 I liked the more square design, 4 touch buttons (physical home button is ridiculously difficult to depress, almost impossible to do one handedly, because of size). The S3 is faster and smoother AND it has ICS (though it is widely available with custom ROMS).
I switched to Verizon (sad bootloader situation, but we do have root) and the LTE is rocking my universe! This is the way a smart phone is supposed to work, I should be able to stream pandora anywhere in hd, I should be able to watch netflix and hulu on the go without wifi and I should be able to have decent 3g in rural areas. Verizon has it, Sprint does not. I used to be a grand supporter of the "unlimited" data plans, but what good is it if it's not fast enough to do anything. I have 6gb LTE and pay the same and haven't had a single issue, plus the S3 has great wifi management so I'm connected when it's around without having to put much thought into it.
Anyway, it's all subjective. This is only my opinion and my experience. I do think it is worth $200 invrstment. Or if you don't want to restart your contract I have a new in box pebble blue for Sprint I would sell for $490 flat with a trident case, (long story about getting that).

i have a samsung galaxy sii right now and am deciding whether or not to upgrade to the siii. are there any major, noticeable differences? i don't want to fork over $200 for a slightly larger version of the phone i already have.
is the display brightness similar to that of the sii? one of the main problems i have with the sii is that it is too bright for viewing in the dark, even at minimum brightness.
does it overheat easily? another problem i had with the sii
is the battery life as bad as the sii?
and that's all i have for now
thanks you

I will tell you coming from my Thunderbolt
I could not be happier with the phone. Now
happy with big red NO since they locked down
the bootloader. No big deal thou to be expected
from them,
Rooted running custom rom from Synergy 1.7
and loving the S3. I work with someone that sits
next to me and was comparing his S2 to my S3.
The following week he returned to work with the
new S3 and seems very happy.

I think it's worth the upgrade. I came from a T-Mobile gs2. Miss my unlocked bootloader though.

Well I have a S2, but not the S3 Yet. I will have to say it seem's worth it to me. Mine should be here soon. ( I got it free from verizon to replace a phone that got a bad unfixable update.)
I would just say you should buy a case for this phone, becuase it does not do as well as the S2 in drops.
If all I had to pay was 200 I would have done it from day one. So yep it seem's good to me.

[Q] Should I buy a Nexus 5 and use it for AT&T?

I currently have a Note 2 on Verizon and have been thinking about switching to a Nexus 5 on AT&T. I had a bad experience with the Galaxy Nexus and have heard negative reviews of the N5 regarding battery life, reception, screen problems, etc. I am trying to decide between the N5 and getting a Moto X off contract for the same price ($349). I have to decide by the 16th because my $150 discount expires then for the Moto X. Please help. Thanks!
Lol note 2 battery life is way better than n5

You are on a Nexus 5 forum, so it is likely that you will get biased opinions. Personally, I love the N5. I don't have any complaints at this time (Except for lousy service with Sprint - but that is not a device issue)
My N5 is in my pocket and my Moto X Developer Edition is at home. Moto X is a nice phone, but it's no Nexus 5.

I have both sitting on my desk in front of me now. One of them has to go back. Dev Edition Moto X on VZ and an N5 on T-Mobile. Honestly, both phones are great. I love the build quality of the X and it's the first Android phone I've used that actually has useful additions to the OS instead of gimmicks. The fact that it got 4.4 so quickly is encouraging as well. That being said, I've always been a Nexus fan. My first Android phone ever was a Nexus One. The N5 is definitely faster with a larger, sharper screen. The quick updates and huge dev support are big pluses too.
Neither of them has what I would call great battery life. The X might be slightly better. I had a Note 2 on VZ as well. It will blow them both out of the water in that regard. I haven't noticed any reception or screen problems with the N5 other than poor off angle viewing.
If you care about flashing ROMs and kernels you want the Nexus. I assume your code only applies to the standard edition X. You'll be lucky to maintain root much less flash anything without having a dev model. Not that there's a lot to flash right now anyway. Personally, I'll probably end up sticking with the X simply because I use a lot of mobile data. T-Mobile coverage isn't cutting it for me and getting 6+GB on ATT will be expensive. I have grandfathered unlimited with VZ and a big corp discount.

I am expecting it to be less than than the note 2 because the battery is smaller. However, I don't want to get a new phone that constantly needs to be charged. How long does it last you on average?
N5. AT&T. no reception issues. on a custom kernel. my daily battery life average is 18 hours on battery with 5 hours of screen-on time.
Stay away from AT&T with the Nexus 5, I only get about 46Mb/s on LTE and perfect call quality and reception everywhere I go
On AT&T and no issues with reception or speed.
I'm currently using N5 with AT&T with no problem with reception or speed. Also the battery lasts for a full day of use (14-15 hours). Of course it's not on the level of Note 2, but still given that it's a Nexus with incredible specs and a great screen (the colors will look a bit washed out if you come straight from Note 2, but they're more accurate in my opinion, and there's a gamma control app you can use to change N5 color), I'd say go with the N5.
On AT&T with my N5 in Maryland. I came from a iPhone 5 and HTC One. I have a 33 mile ride to work and its mostly county twisty roads. I always would lose my reception at 4 spots on my ride. 2 in one county and 2 in another county. I would lose it with my ip5, then with the One. I was just commenting to my wife, I don't lose the reception at all anymore. Now I suppose maybe more towers came online, but its a pretty big area I cover and the spots were pretty spread out.
I get 16 hours easy and by that time I'm usually shutting it down anyway, I use the Nexus wireless charger.
I don't have any experience with the Moto X, but I was close to trying that also. The sound on the One's speakers are really good and it has the ir blaster thing, but with all that I stuck with the N5, I just really like it.
I'm on stock rom, rooted and custom recovery.
I want the nexus the most. I left sprint for Verizon 2 years ago for the galaxy nexus. It had several problems and now my contract is up and I want the N5. I figured at&t would be my best bet for the network. I am just worried that the N5 will be problematic like the GN. But you guys are making me feel better about the n5 and at&t.

I have the n5 on AT&T, complaints! Great phone, battery gets me through my work day (which usually is from 9/10AM to 7 or 8PM)
I owned the Verizon GNex, and I can tell you that there is no comparison between that POS and the N5. Much of the GNex problems were with Verizon (or the fact that the CDMA radio made it different). Many people who loved the GNex had the GSM version. Most of the people who hated it had the Verizon version. They were that different.
The N5 is simply a work of art, comparatively. It's smooth as butter, has a MUCH higher build quality, and is wholly supported by Google. There are no CDMA radios to screw things up, and Verizon is completely out of the picture (as are other carriers) so updates will actually be timely.
I switched from Verizon to AT&T in preparation for the N5 (before it existed), and had an S4 (active) in the meantime. As soon as the N5 was available, I jumped on it, and I have been extremely happy. I have had no discernible signal issues. Battery life (for me) is better than either the GNex (with extended battery) or the S4 (standard battery), but wireless charging makes that a moot point, since I can just keep wireless chargers at home and at work, which provides a quick top-off when needed.
In short, don't worry. You'll love the N5. Don't let the Gnex scare you... there really is no comparison.
EDIT: Regarding the Moto X. Great phone also. In fact, I almost went that way myself. Active Display and always listening Google Now are awesome. However, 720p screen and no wireless charging were deal-killers for me. The N5, with its LCD screen is much easier to see in bright sunlight, and wireless charging... well... what can I say? I'll never own another phone without it. I would take wireless charging over active display any day of the week. However, you may be different. Decide which feature you'd like best and go for that device. You can't go wrong with either phone.

M8 Terrible Signal vs DNA

I gotta vent. It's driving me nuts! My girl has my Droid DNA - and just like me when I had it, she gets at least 3 bars of LTE at home. I'm lucky to get ONE BAR of 1X on my M8!!! It's ridiculous! I can barely send text messages from home. They sit there for several minutes with the 'sending' icon. It's so choppy, people are even receiving double or triple text messages. How can one HTC phone have such incredible signal and a newer one have such terrible signal!?
When I get a chance, I'll take a look at the actual signal dB numbers. Regardless of the numbers, though, this phone's service sucks. Other than that, I absolutely love this phone.

It's much better than my GNex, but that's not saying much (it had notoriously bad reception). I've only noticed going down to 3G once, which is great for me.

I think the signal on M8 is much worse than on the DNA (I have access to both), but only at certain angles of the M8.
M8 has a complete solid metal back, which is completely opaque to microwave and radio waves. When you turn the M8 correctly, it gets a better signal. Not by very much but better.
I get the same service I've always had. Full LTE and AWS. Something is wrong with either something that you may have flashed or your phone is defective. Send it back.

Im with you man. I also came from a GNex, and it seems like a lot of other have too.
Its crazy how much better the reception has been with the M8. I had trouble getting any 3G or 4G in my new house with my GNex, even outside. With my m8, I get an average of 3 bars of 4G. And the difference is like that everywhere I go including work. I don't know how I lasted that long on the GNex. I guess I just got used to the crazy bad reception.
That being said, I have always heard that most Motorola phones have some of the best reception. And this was always the case with my older motorola flip phones (E815) also. But I stopped buying motorola phones after the original Droid X bootloader was locked down like Fort Knox, and they said all their newer phones were gonna be like that.
EDIT:
To the person that just sold the NOTE 3. That phone is just like the GNex was. Awful reception. My dad had the phone for two days and returned it. We looked up reviews and saw tons of people complaining about the reception. Which is funny because the Note 2 had a solid reception. My brother uses it and gets great service, as well as all the reviews. Samsung must have dropped the ball on the Note 3 antenna.
I agree with the OP. This handset has noticeably lower signal strength than my old HTC Rezound, and the one my wife currently uses as her personal phone. My M8 is only slightly better than the GNEX she has as a company-provided work phone. Disappointing, actually, as the M8 is a phenomenal device in most other regards.
To be honest though, I've not experienced a single dropped call, as of yet. But, I see data switching to 3G quite regularly. I'm still on the stock ROM, only S-OFF and rooted.
Just to add that coming from the DNA to the M8, I have been extremely happy with reception.
My DNA would consistently drop out at certain points in the city (minneapolis) but my M8 has been solid.
To be honest, I really don't pay a lot of attention to bars, so I couldn't say if I have the same, more or less bars with the M8, but I haven't had any issues with connectivity.

If your M8 is only slightly better than a gnex, you have a defective M8. G-nex has the worst reception of any phone I've ever owned, by FAR.
For me in New Jersey, where LTE practically covers the entire state, the M8 gets good reception but my DNA definitely got better reception.
At work in Newark..And I work in a glass building...DNA would be between 96-98 dBm and my M8 is between 102-105.
I'm assuming that's the aluminum casing. Don't get me wrong, reception is great but in marginal signal areas like at home in my basement, dna would hold LTE where M8 will drop to 3g and sometimes 1x

Yeah, my mom's GS3 had similarly crappy reception to my GNex, and Samsung's radios have never had the best reputation, but I heard they've gotten somewhat better. But I guess maybe they reverted back to their old ways with the Note 3...
Don't forget though, while the DX had a locked bootloader (I had a DX as well, it was actually my Android gateway device), it also had a great development community. So with some awesome dev's, even a locked bootloader doesn't mean the device won't be awesome.
Coming from multiple devices such as the Gnex, DNA, Note 3 and now the M8, I think there's more to it than just moving from one phone to another. Yes, HTC is known for better radios than Samsung and having the Note 3 before the M8 I personally witnessed the M8 produce better reception. But I think the issue also stems from the added LTE frequencies that have been added to newer handsets. For example my Note 3 before the AWS roll out performed very good, but once the roll out hit NYC and I started to check if I was connected to band 4 in my handset I began to notice my service between LTE, 3G and 1X fluctuate a lot. At work where I was constantly connected to LTE band 13 before and don't ever remember having 3G, the phone began to connect only to 3G.
Purchasing a new phone such as the M8 that has support for AWS but is weaker may be the result. The Droid DNA only supported Verizon LTE Band 13.
When I'm at work where my DNA had great LTE reception, my M8 seems to be OK - only slightly less signal. I think the problem is worse when the LTE signal is marginal like at my home. It seems that's when the difference is very noticeable. At home, I'd be lucky to get LTE on my older phones (Thunderbolt and Rezound) but the DNA was awesome. LTE all the time at home. I think I was spoiled.
You probably got a defective device, because mine gets signal everywhere I couldn't before.

I went from a GNex to an X, and noticed a great signal reception different. I thought the X had great reception, and held with Motorola's reputation for good radios. My M8 has a lot better reception than the X did, far none. Spots where I would have ~1 to 2 bars of 3G, I now have at least 3 at all times. The 4G radio boundary seems to be a lot better than the X had as well. I would agree with what was previously stated, and say you have a defective unit.
Coming from a g2 I consistantly see -5 db better with this device in the same locations.

The M8 appears to have similar signal reception to the S4. My son loves the M8, so no chance of an objective view there. The new device pixie dust is too strong
I find the following based on comparing:
DNA > i5s > M8/S4 Both the DNA and iPhone 4s have better reception than than the equal M8 & S4. Still not tested the S5 and will not unless they get a 32gb model. That would be my phone.
The worst phone recpetion device I ever owned was the Nokie N600. It was AWFUL and made the GNEX seem like a DNA on steroids. I grew to really "hate" Nokia after that device. Their Windows Phone love solidifies the "hate".
Something quite a few people here are not taking into account is that the M8 is utilizing Verizon's AWS band, whereas the Rezound/DNA are not. Your M8's signal bars are more than likely displaying AWS signal(assuming your area has AWS this will be the case). On a Rezound, your signal bars reflect your 1X signal...which will always be extremely high in most areas. On a DNA you will be seeing the normal LTE band.
If you're trying to compare to older devices like the Rezound, you need to launch a voice call on your M8 before even giving a second thought to the signal bars. To address the DNA...you won't really be able to compare the two devices since the DNA doesn't support the AWS band at all...unless you live in a non-AWS area.
If you do the appropriate comparisons, the M8's signal is great. I hope this helps clear up a lot of the misunderstanding going on in this thread. :good:
