Installing Ubuntu Linux mobile version on xperia s - General Questions and Answers

Hello
I'm planning to install Ubuntu mobile version on my xperia s but I've no idea how to do it, can someone please help me by explaining step by step procedure. Thanks a lot in advance.

I'd really be interested in doing the same. Since its HTML based, I'm guessing tweaking the OS should be considerably simpler. Opens up a lot more doors in terms of customizing technology to work as per the needs of the consumer.

Mobile GUI

guys, i need some help here. basically im a final year student and currently, im planning on my major project. i was thinking of designing a new phone (yes, a new phone) together with a user interface. would it be possible for me to design the entire user interface itself? lets say im working on a nokia phone and i plan to redesign the entire GUI. will that be extremely hard? lol cause my programming skills are just moderate compared to my designing.
Hy,
sorry but ... If i am right you want to do a windows mobile like gui for nokia phones???
I think its hard but if you have the skills you can do it!

You might want to look at some mobile Open Source OSs such as
Android, Symbian, OPhone, OpenMoko etc.

Android ROM

Good afternoon, this is my first post here, so i'll introduce myself a little.
I'm Johan, I live in The Netherlands, and i have a "MDA II, a T-Mobile branded HTC Himalaya" and a "MDA Compact, a T-Mobile branded HTC Magician".
I'm doing a study informatica, and i'm planning to choose as minor for software engineer or game development.
Currently for a schoolproject we have to write an application for an android mobile phone. Both my phones aren't for android and afcourse i've searched the forums as good as i could but so far no luck.
I'm looking for someone with some background knowledge of Android and who could point me in the right direction on what i should do to make a custom ROM for 1 of my telephones, i read that for the compact there are some linux tryouts so i think the base is there already it just needs to be explored a little further.
Hope that someone can help me out,
Thanks
Johan
Hi Johan, welcome to XDA
Unfortunatly i do not beleive that either of your devices will run android, however, part of the Android DTK is an emulator. That should work for you?
Good luck
Hi Badwolve,
Thanks for youre reply, I am aware of the emulator in the android SDK, but its really really slow... (CPU runs up to 100% really soon even with just an empty project running and RAM is 400MB wich is quit a lot) and then you have to count the RAM usage of netbeans to etc.(laptop kinda protests against this abuse )
So if i could beat that crappy emulator part and run it (maybe just as slow, but hey) on my telephone that would be awesome.
Also i did read that for the magician there are several versions of linux, so there is some sort of progress, but i have no idea if someone is still working on that, or if anyone could point me in the direction where they left off.
(i had the idea atleast that android was somewhere based upon linux, and that the java was somewhat based upon sun's java idea (lol @ did you guys know there isn't "JAV"A ... there is just some layout of how java should look like and then you can makeup youre own ideas)
i'll have a look for you, but i'm quite busy at the mo
will post if i find anything
http wiki xda-developers com/index.php?pagename=Android_devices shows that the apache http pdadb net/index.php?m=specs&id=705&c=verizon_xv6700_htc_apache runs android.
I think the specs aren't much different from the magician (cpu/ram/rom) http pdadb net/index.php?m=specs&id=133&view=1&c=t-mobile_mda_compact_htc_magician
The himalaya has a bit less CPU but the RAM capacity is higher, so i guess if the specs from 1 phone is good enough to run android, phones with simmilar specs should work to.
Or is that just to simplistic?
I'd really love to hear where i should look to figure out howto start experimenting. I meen, i'm googling everywhere, but i have no idea what searchterms i should use to get in the right direction, the only thing i keep getting in my face all the time "its impossible blablabla" but then again, look at the specs of the cpu/ram ... and look at the "its impossible to run win mobile 5.0" while there is 6.5 available for them.
Its just a point that someone actually has to start working on it, and hope that others follow. If someone points me in the right way, i'll be the starter and hope that i get backup when i get stuck somewhere.
(can't add :// or . in links :S keep getting some weird notification ... copy'd the links from the wiki, so they can't be to bad )
http www talkandroid com/android-forums/android-hardware/2-android-minimum-hardware-requirements.html Minimum requirements for android in 2008 .... wonder if those specs are still the same.
Unfortunatly, just because the specs are simaler, it doesn't mean it will work, different mainboard, ram type and rom type.
if you got a diamond or newer (but not HD2), you could use haret
i recp, emd the TP2 or Topaz (Diamond 2), these run Android very well

[Q] Creating Mobile OS

Hello all
first of all , i m new to this forum.
Well i m looking forward to develop a mobile operating system, maybe a small one, with limited functionalities, but i want to get started with my own custom mobile OS,
doesnt matter if it is based on linux kernal or my custom kernal..
i just want to know what do you guys suggest in order to get started and pre requisites for developing an OS, and other related stuff..
because for now, its just an idea to me.
b.t.w i hv stronge grip over C, C#, Java, Php, Little bit of assembly and Microprocessor architecures and other related stuff.. and yeah basic knowledge of OS Designs..
so any help would be very beneficial for me.
looking forward to hear from you soon.
I recommend a visiting an OS developer forum.
Use plain C (gcc) for best results and look up some OS code for machine dependent parts.Try to find out your CPU and get developer manuals and spec updates from the chip manufacturer. You need a lot of time for debugging.
I recommend a visiting an OS developer forum.

[Useless] Best smart phone for porting MaruOS? (And how to start)

Hi,
I am due to purchase new smartphone and interested in Maru OS. Most probably I am looking at devices from Xiaomi, Innjoo or Oppo (due to spec-to-cost ratio) depending how much friendly it is for porting Maru OS.
1) Can anyone advise which will be the best device for this purpose? I understand major problem will come due to non-availability / locked bootlooders, drivers and working kernel.
2) Also, I am not experienced in mobile development and not a pro/full-time programmer (but can learn as I have been using Gentoo and Arch Linux, plus studied programming during school days), if anyone experienced can help me in getting started, it will be a good start for me.
Thank you.
EDIT:
Marked 'Useless' ... thanks to everyone for not responding.
^bump
If no one is interested in responding to OP, can anyone point me to how to extract device drivers from stock ROM for use with custom ROM I intend to compile? [I mean use working ROM as a base then customize it for Maru OS adoption].

I was wondering about alternitive os like sailfish and other linux based os.

Hi total noob here
Like the title says i was wondering why other operating systems like sailfish arent more popular amongst people on this forum or people who are into the modifiing of os for smartphones in generall?
since u can also run adroid apps on it u can stil use it as a daily without sacrificing anything compared to android.
Is there a barrier why there isnt a interest for it forexample is it difficult to program or something ? or people just arent intersted in it?
same for other linux projects that want to put linux os from the computer to the smartphones seems very interessting to me. like update wise.
Looking forward to your reply
