[Q] to cross this bridge and go to heaven, answer me these questions seven... - Xperia Z3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been enjoying my Z3 for 3 days now, having used a Note1 running MIUI for the last 3 years. (It still works great and i love miui, but I'm going for four years... i saw this D6653 on Amazon Warehouse open-box for $450, so i grabbed it. No warrantee, but perfect condition as far as i can tell, and working with AT&T
Anyway here's four easy questions from someone who is 3 yrs behind and just arrived:
1. charger.
The Z3 charger is 1.5A. I happen to have a 2.1A from another gadget, and it worked great for charging the Note. but then again those batteries are replaceable. should i keep it away from the z3? Will my non-replaceable sealed Z3 battery last meaningfully longer if I use the proper 1.5A, or is it fine to just use either one interchangeably?
2. X-pen?
i almost never used the "S-pen" but it was nice once in a while.
would this pen be the same experience? are all phablets stylus-enbled these days?
http://shop.crackberry.com/incipio-inscribe-executive-stylus-and-pen/16A44A10649.htm
3. whats the go-to swiping keyboard?
I'm really used to swype. (don't like swiftkey.)
i notice that the xperia keyboard does swiping now.
does the google keyboard swipe as well?
is there a known favorite for swipers now?
4. noise cancellation
i heard that the Z3 does software noise-canceling. where's that setting? does it require special headphones with mics mounted at the ears? or does it use the mic(s) on the unit to listen for a repetitive noise worth canceling?
or maybe just not true at all...
5. lowlight camera
someone mentioned there's a lowlight capability that would be a shame to lose if one were to unlock BL. where is this lowlight setting?
6. what do you recommend for backup, non-rooted?
how about the one built into the free AVG virus utility that came with it? is it actually a decent utility or is it bloat?
7. xperia lounge - is there really something of value there, or it is just like /r/lounge?
how about Movie Express (which required access to your address book!). any point?
weird annoyance-
i imported 1700 call history records, but the phone app shows only those from 1/1/15 going forward. is there another way to access the records which should be there according to the import app? (the sister app had no trouble importing 3500 sms records, and the z3 stock sms app has no problem showing them all.)
misc fun fact i leave you in exchange:
i have an external non-powered (line powered) usb soundcard/interface which i have been using in order to record proper 2-channel stereo into my mac. i plugged it into Z3 (regular usb -to- micro adapter) and it worked! the volume was pretty low, but maybe that will improve if i play with it more. i don't know if there's too many units out there that allow completely portable stereo recording with with external mics.

Is your TF700 a keeper?

I've seen a few hit or miss issues that have been coming to light since the release of the TF700 infinity. On some devices, it seems to work and on others, not as well or not at all. From this, it seemed quite necessary to have a thread to identify the issues that others may encounter and for what they should check to know if they have a "good device" or whether it should be returned. Please let me know if their are any items that should be related to this list. If you wish to discuss your tablet's attributes (both good and bad) further, Pretoriano80 has made such a thread: [Infinity issues/defects/good features] Share your issues, defects or best features
Make sure you charge your tablet before using! Explanation in point 3.
Also, do not update past 9.4.5.26 during these tests if you want to use NVFlash!
1- Does your device have good build quality?
Some people have found that there are scratches on the device, frame's bent, the display is poorly set, the ports may be improperly mounted or other such things. It is recommended that if you encounter any of these that you return the device to get another one since you paid a lot of money for a "good" device. The tablet might click at corners, some of the backlight might bleed through around the edges of the display, or maybe show a slight but often not serious protrusion of the screen from the device. It's up to you to judge whether the extremity of this occurrence on your device are serious enough to warrant a return depending on your definition of "quality".
A possible test for "light bleed" is to take a picture from the camera in either a dark room or the camera lens covered (objective is to take a "black" photo). Open the image in the gallery app and turn up the brightness on the device. In this fashion you should be able to notice any "severe" cases of light bleed like this. If the light bleed is little and only noticeable during startup, then it's probably nothing to worry about.
2- Does your device have haptic feedback? (Does it vibrate properly?)
When you turn on and off your device, it should vibrate. This vibration will be subtle like the feeling of a working electrical appliance and not like a console joystick. If it doesn't, then it probably is defective. There are various methods to getting some type of jiggle out of the tablet if you want a more extensive test. One example is to add such feedback to your on-screen keyboard via Settings -> Language & Input. I'll just go over the basic "Android Keyboard". Select the sliders button next to the keyboard, look for "vibrate on keypress", put a little check next to that, then go into "advanced settings". By default, these vibrations are set to 1ms which is a duration too short to provide any feedback. Adjust the "Keypress vibration duration settings" to something like 100ms in order to ensure that the buzz happens. Finally, verify that your default keyboard is set to the "Android Keyboard" and then open up something like SuperNote where you can type. You should have some buzzing upon every keypress. When done with this test, just go back into the keyboard settings and disable the "vibrate on keypress".
3- Is your battery life ~9 hours in power-saving mode or ~6 hours in balanced mode?
Some people have noticed that they either never reach this amount or never come close to it. This is kind of an expected behavior since on the first page of the instructions manual (you did read the manual, right?) it mentions this:
"Fully charge the battery up to eight hours for the first-time use. The battery reaches its maximum capacity after one full charging and discharging cycle." Therefore, one is supposed to charge the battery for up to an 8 hour period prior to use and then discharge the battery (until ~10% or so). You may encounter a variant of this concerning "a few cycles" but still, right after tearing the plastic off the box like a rapid child at Christmas, ensure that you just plug it in and forget about it for 8 hours (or until the charging light turns off). Otherwise, it can have a lasting negative impact on battery life.
More information about Li-ion can be found here.
4- Does the GPS work?
The TF700 shares a few things with the TF201 Prime (which had notoriously bad wireless, including Wifi communication, Bluetooth, and GPS). Some owners of the Prime didn't remember to check GPS even when everything else worked and later needed to get a Dongle. Ergo, why I put it here high on the list. I believe many of the issues dealing with hardware and software have been addressed by ASUS so if your GPS doesn't work, try updating (not past 9.4.5.26!) the device or send it back since it might be hardware related. Make sure that when testing, you have the "find location via wifi" option turned off if using Maps. Otherwise, test with a tool from Google Play Store like GPS Status or GPS Test. Note: testing may involve going outside and dancing with the device as the first connection is often the most difficult to get.
When GPS is working, you should see a little circle with a blinking dot inside in the lower right-hand corner. Sometimes, the dot might not blink and can seem to influence how well GPS programs work. Its a strange thing but with a simple solution (from myself encountering it on both the TF300 and the TF700): just open the notifications bar and close it again. The dot should be blinking. If not, try actually turning off and then turning back on the GPS via the notifications bar.
5- Does mini-HDMI work?
Though not necessarily a tendency of faults in the infinity, it is important to check all the offered functionality of the device prior to making it a permanent fixture in your life. Remember that if you don't have a friend with a mini-HDMI cable, Walmart (and many other stores) will accept returns provided they are within a particular time period. Feel free to use this return policy to test your device.
6- Can you watch video/youtube/netflix/etc while using a bluetooth headset?
Some people have noticed that there is a huge decrease in speed when watching a video while using a bluetooth headset for audio. The cause of this is unknown and the only explanation we know of is "because wifi and bluetooth share the same antenna". This seems plausible except that many other devices also use the same antenna for both functionalities yet do not display this behavior. Due to the underlying fact we do not know whether it is software or hardware related, it is advisable to return the product.
7- Does the headphone jack work?
Just for thoroughness and ease-of-testing, plug in a set of ear buds and make sure you hear sound. Some have complained that the quality is mediocre due to a humming noise but that the noise is negligible. If the noise is too pronounced, there still is the mounted speaker and if point 6's test was successful, bluetooth is still an option.
8- Does your device feel quick to respond? If not, are you on firmware version .26?
It has been widely noted that version .26 of the firmware made the tablet very snappy. This also helped the device to recognize more microSD cards but also caused problems with NTFS-formatted drives. If you aren't getting the response you want, try upgrading to .26 (not beyond that). Additionally, if your microSD card is NTFS, you may want to reformat it (backup whatever you want to keep first) to FAT32 or exFAT until the issues with NTFS are ironed out. This point also concerns point 9 further down.
9- Can you receive OTA updates? (This should be fixed since Aug 7)
Provided that you are on version .21 or .22, you should be able to receive updates from ASUS for your device via the "About Tablet" option in settings. If you cannot, this might be indicative of another issue which has yet to be identified. You can apply updates without OTA via these methods:
(easiest way)[HOW TO]Tired to wait the .26 with WW TF700 device?
(another way)*** Firmware News & Alternative Install Methods*** Ver. 9.4.5.26 27/07
(requires root)[HOWTO] Manually updating firmware using "dlpkgfile" download via Asus FOTA server
(requires unlocked bootloader)[HowTo] Restore Stock Recovery and Install .26 OTA Manually with Unlocked Bootloader
(requires unlocked bootloader and TWRP custom recovery)[CWM] Repackaged OTA update 9.4.5.26 US/WW versions
Make sure you do not update past 9.4.5.26 if you want to use NVFlash!
10- (Only if this is important to you and then only if you are willing to forego any ASUS warranty) Can you unlock the bootloader? (This should be fixed since Aug 7)
Bonus Warning: ASUS has noted that using their bootloader unlocker will void your warranty and all OTA updates for your device will cease. However, without this unlocking, you will not be able to run custom ROMs nor will you be able to use NVFlash to make your device brick-proof.
[Device is unlocked][Video Added] Bootloader Unlock Tool Released [25.7.2012]
If you are still within your store's "grace period", you may want to try this out to verify if your device will ever be able to run non-ASUS android systems. There's no way of knowing at this moment if the bootloader unlocker will work on your device without actually trying to unlock it. If it does not work, it might be due to their service being unavailable, your serial number might not yet be in their database of devices for the unlock to succeed, your device serial number internally might not match your external serial number (on the sticker), or the problem might be something else entirely. Many of those whose bootloader would not unlock did not receive OTAs either so this shares the "issue which has yet to be identified" from point 9.
If you can give your tab a :good: to all of these points, then you have a good device! Congratulations! :highfive:

Yep, mines a keeper.
Build quality is acceptable .. (I own an ipad also) ...I'm going to say 80% the build quality of the ipad. It does OTA and manual updates just fine. Headphone jack works. Has slight click if you press the screen by the speaker ...but only noticable because I read here that it clicks if you press by the speaker . Speed, temps, light bleed, battery life ....all as expected ...not perfect but perfectly acceptable. I am enjoying the tablet, and have no major complaints. I can only assume it will get better with JB when it comes out.
The ipad is more polished, faster, easier to use ....but not by a huge margin. And I make allowance for the immaturity of android tablets and the OS compared to ipad and iOS. I think the trade off is worth it for the additional control... and eventual rooting of the device.
Price ....hmmmm... perhaps a bit high compared to the ipad.... about $75 less would have been nice ....but it's basically a toy for me so I can't complain too much. And part of the whole thing is I wanted a tablet....and I wanted to support the Android market so it would stand a better chance at competing with the ipad... because honestly I think Andriod is the future of tablets ...not iOS.
I'd say the single disappointment is ....I bought the tablet to watch motorcycle racing videos from MotoGP.com, which I pay about $120 US a year to be a member ..... guess what...the tablet will not play the archived videos from this site ....it will stream live video fine, it will play all other "current" content fine...but will not play the archived videos ...... my iPad plays them just fine. I'm in contact with MotoGP.com trying to solve the problem ...but it's not a new problem ....its across the Asus tablet line.
Still.... I enjoy the TF700T, and think it's a good product ....although perhaps should be offered at a bit more of a discount compared to the iPad ....for now.
I have no regrets.

This thread is really just supposed to be a developing checklist for people to verify their tablets since it seems that not all problems are experienced by all users and some problems are more extreme than others. That being noted, how did you try to access said videos? Is there a specific program or application you are required to use? Did you try other such programs from the Play store? Since you are paying for your access, I doubt it would be something that a non-member would be able to assist much.
Yes it is a keeper
Plays HD content flawlessly
The GPS is sooper dup on the road
The WIFI sensitivity is exceptional
Can be viewed outside easily
I really like the hotspot tethering performance also
Pretty much a sweet package
I use it a lot around the house to help me with DIY project info...

10/10, clicks a a little but IDGTF.
2- Does the GPS work?

ISHYGDDT
5- Does the headphone jack work?
Yes, makes beeping rarely when I start videos.
6- Does your device feel quick to respond? If not, are you on firmware version .26?
Yes, like butter. I still want jelly Bean though.
7- Is your battery life ~9 hours in power-saving mode or ~6 hours in balanced mode?
6 hours in balanced, yes. Never go to power saving because lag.
8- Can you receive OTA updates?
No, bootloader unlocked.
9- (Only if this is important to you and then only if you are willing to forego any ASUS warranty) Can you unlock the bootloader?
Already did
The only issue I've really had with my device after upgrading to .26 is occasional lock-ups. One lock-up concerned me enough to feel a need to return the device. The screen filled with vertical (if holding landscape) white bars. Has anyone else experienced such issues?
I haven't tested the HDMI yet. And other then the inability to OTA or unlock everything is working perfectly on the latest build

My friend found one at Best Buy here in NJ. I told him to return it (not exchange) because of the amount of light bleed alone. He was not able to update it, and it just kept crashing on him which made it almost impossible to use. He's going to try hard reset it again to see if any of that helps.
1- Does your device have good build quality?
Mine is perfect.
2- Does the GPS work?
GPS so far works great without using the AGPS to assist.
3- Does mini-HDMI work?
Have a cable from my Prime, both worked flawlessly as does my Bionic.
4- Can you watch video/youtube/netflix/etc while using a bluetooth headset?
Funny thing it does drop from about 20 Mbps to about 3Mbps down, but that won't change no matter how far from the router. The upload is 4Mbps on both no matter how far from the router. It's not the dual antenna that's the problem, it's that they both use one controller chip for the two.
5- Does the headphone jack work?
No problems on mine.
6- Does your device feel quick to respond? If not, are you on firmware version .26?
Was definitely laggy on .21, on .26 MUCH better especially in performance mode. I'm excited for JB.
7- Is your battery life ~9 hours in power-saving mode or ~6 hours in balanced mode?
I charged about 4 hrs till green/fully charged. Funny thing is you can't overcharge these new batteries now and days. They are set to auto stop charging once full (that's the benefit of them now) So I have never "overcharged" because it's not possible. That being said I did a full charge, and am working on the first full depletion to recharge. I'm at 62% and that's 3 days later lol. I have been using it light/moderate the past few days. At least 3.5 hrs of Netflix streaming, setting it up, and not turning it off overnight. We'll see but so far so good and Ifinitely (like that ) better than my Prime.
8- Can you receive OTA updates?
Not OTA, manual worked just fine
Good list, thanks. Mine has passed all of these so far but the headphone test. I forgot that one. I guess I'll give it a shot tonight.
" "Fully charge the battery up to eight hours for the first-time use. The battery reaches its maximum capacity after one full charging and discharging cycle.""
It says" upto 8 hours" It doesn't mean you NEED the full 8 hours. Once you go green and are 100% fully charged, the charger shuts down on its own so not to overheat the battery. The "upto 8 hours" is for folks charging their device via USB on their PC - - which can take up to 8 hours to getting that full charge.
I just got mine yesterday, and while I haven't had time to test either HDMI or full battery cycle (though it's doing pretty well so far) all else is wonderful. Great screen, OTA update to build 26, great wifi and gps, headphones work fine. Sound out of headphones and BT headset is actually great. I do have a millisecond lag with BT audio and watching streaming video, but I could actually live with it, it's not that bad.
This one is definitely a keeper.
I have a quick question while I'm checking my tablet, which arrived yesterday... my screen is uniform across the edge, no creaking or inconsistencies, but the entire surface is raised, or at least isn't flush like my previous Prime. Is that normal? Anyone have a completely flushed screen on their 700? Thanks.

So I guess the screen is higher due to the hardware improvements from the Prime. Good to know, just wanted to be cautious.

Same here - more like 1/16th inch, maybe?
Mine looks perfect, but if I press a bit harder on the screen (you won't do this with normal usage) I get a hissing noice which sound like air is escaping from between the screen. At that moment I can see deformations on the screen. I have read other people do have the same issue, but wondering if this is normal (so all TF700 have it?) or if I should exchange. Any advice?
I have one really big scratch on the dockingstation. Going back to the store tomorrow to get another one.
Added xRevilatioNx's and neo1738's clarification regarding initial battery charge and the green charging light turning off.
Yeah, I agree with you that the new batteries can't be overcharged in the literal sense. It was merely to emphasize the fact that a "full charge" is necessary to receive optimum life out of the device's battery. We don't really know what type of charge existed on the device prior to our receipt, so it's best (or in a worse case scenario) just to charge it for the 8 hours regardless of the status of the light. Does it make a difference if it's 8 hours or until the green light turns off? Probably not. But for the Android neophytes just getting their hands on a tablet for the 1st or 2nd time, I think that my explanation is still applicable and satisfactory to provide a perspective easy to understand and beneficial to the consumer. Thanks for the detailed clarification though.
Received my champagne gold today and doesn't seem to be any issues at all. No light bleed, WiFi and bluetooth are perfect, and no I/O issues (updated as soon as I turned on the device). Seeing as the champagne golds seem to have come latter in the production cycle, it seems they are improving their processes slowly but surely.

Just Bought Tab 2 7.0 - A Few Questions...

Hey... so I bought the SGT2 7, the garnet red, 8gb version, JB 4.1.1, and have a couple questions.
1 - The speaker placement is different than most pics I've seen, and even in a different place than the case that came with it! In most of the pics the speaker is on the front of the tab, at the top of portrait mode next to the camera. On my tab the speakers are on the edge, at the bottom in portrait mode and there's 2 of them at each corner. Also the display model at Costco had the speakers on the bottom edge but they boxes showed it on the top front. What's up with that? Did they change the position of it? Is bottom edge the newer version? Do you think it's better on bottom edge or top front?
2 - The main reason I bought it is to use in my car to replace my car stereo/nav unit. I have a 64gb card in my phone that has a lot of music on it. I would like to be able to control that music using my Tab and stream the music from my Tab to the car via BT. Is that possible to control the music that's on my phone and have it output via the Tab? I'm having issues streaming audio using BT from my phone to car, haven't figured out the issue yet so I'm hoping it will work with the Tab, otherwise I'll use the aux cable. I do want the music output to be from the Tab so the phone can stay in my purse unless I need it on the charger.
If it makes any difference I will have the Tab tethered to my phone, rooted HTC Rezound, so that I can use it for internet radio, navi, etc....
Also, heard about TabletTalk. Found DeskSMS. Any rival apps? Suggestions?
3. I saw an older post that said IR wasn't working on custom ROMs, is it working now? That's the other reason I justified buying this, it is supposed to be my univseral remote for all my audio/video equipment at home, working pretty well except it seems the only "other devices" are Apple TV and Roku. Would like to use it for Xbox too since I use that for streaming from pc atm. Is there a better app?
Not planning on rooting the Tab until I'm sure it's going to suit my needs. Costco gives me 90 days to play with it and decide if I want to keep it, so that's nice.
Thanks for any help.

To send send/receive SMS from tablets, laptops and desktops you could take a look at PopMyPhone. It uses email to bridge between the phone and any email capable device so there are no additional apps required on the tablet. Search the Play store for PopMyPhone
Okay... why would I not get audio from an aux cable out to my aux in on my car?

Yeah, I had it the first time I plugged it in then it disappeared. Then I kept unplugging and plugging back in then switched ends of the cable around and still nothing ever again. Came inside and tried my earbuds and had no issues at all.
The main reason I bought it is to use for my car. Ugh. It doesn't make any sense. I can see there may be reasons why bluetooth streaming might be an issue with my phone since it's rooted and running a global leak, but even that works with the cable no problem.

Yea I tried it today for the first time and it played those few seconds then cut out. I was thinking it was the song but no matter what one I selected it kept doing it. I don't have to any issues with my headphones either. Some of the things samsung has done to this tab makes me wonder

A short review of the MW1 with the Xperia Z.

I bought the MW1 last week, and I've had time to play with it, but not to fix the problems I've found, so partly to explain my problems to possible buyers, and partly to get help to fix my problems, I'm writing this review.
First of all, I listened to the headphones that came with the MW1 unit for all of ten minutes. I'm sure they were fine, wonderful and would imbue all music with a magic substance, but I already have a set of Shures, and I don't need them.
Pairing the MW1 with the phone was supposed to be a matter of NFC-touching, but that didn't work. Instead I used the "quick start guide", and it took me about three minutes to set it up once and for all, and it's automatically connected to the phone every time I've switched it on ever since. Basically, you switch it on, and all sound should output through the MW1 instead of from the phone. This is not always true, which I'll come back to.
Sound is fantastic. I can't head any difference between using my Shure through the MW1 and directly to the phone, although I've used my normal music files, which are in AAC ~192kbit VBR, so I'm sure someone with higher standards would find something to complain about. Since 90% of what I listen to is podcasts and audiobooks, we're well past my level already.
Now, the hardware: the unit itself has some pretty obvious faults, which makes it very obvious that this is 1.0 hardware. In fact, I would call it 0.5 hardware. Sony has made some very odd choices, and these are definitely the most important downsides to this unit.
First of all, both the microSD-card and the micro-USB port are inside a lid which looks so much like the lid to a USB-stick that I find myself wondering why they didn't do the obvious thing and simply add a normal USB plug so we could just charge it by sticking it into a computer/USB power adapter, instead of mucking about with a cable. The only thing they would have to move is the microSD-slot, which would fit behind the USB plug just fine.
Second, the power button. If you've seen any reviews about this unit, you'll have heard about the power button. It strikes me that whomever decided that the power button should be of the "hold in for three seconds"-type, be completely impossible to press without half-inch nails, and be located at the WORST POSSIBLE PLACE on the unit, decides ten lashes and a dishonorable discharge from the world of product design.
Now, this is about all there is to say about the actual MW1, but as promised, I'm going to try to talk about how it works with the Xperia Z.
First of all, you must understand that at least 70% of the reason I bought the MW1 in the first place is the lid over the headset-port on the phone. To have to fumble around with my nail to fit into a specific slot out of several completely identical slots around the edges of my phone was COMPLETELY out of the picture. And yes, this solves that problem.
Another problem, however, appears shortly after. I have several applications which play audio, and since I no longer pick up the phone, unlock the screen, (sometimes change application) and THEN press play in the app I want, the phone easily gets confused as to which app is to get the "play" message from the MW1. You'd think perhaps that the Walkman app would be in a default-position just like iTunes is on macs, or Windows Media Player is on Windows, but no - for some reason it just selects completely by random any old running app, and outputs the sound. For me, when pausing Pocketcasts and then pressing play again a few minutes later, it seems to be about 50% chance that Pocketcasts picks up again (which is almost always what I wanted, and ALWAYS what I want to have happen), 25% PowerAmp even though it is never loaded and just installed in case I ever want to play music from my phone at a party or something, and 25% a completely random audio player, including (but certainly not limited to) Smart Audiobook Player, Plex, Winamp, Walkman or ANY other app I have installed on my phone.
So in short: great unit, get it if you can, but if there is ever a version 2.0 of this device and they haven't fixed the power button, please apply for a position with Sony's hardware design group, cause apparently they're useless.
Also, if anyone knows of any way to permanently bind the play button to "whichever app I just paused, you nitwit", let me know.
Also, these units are pretty damn cheap these days, mine was well under 100 USD, and it's well worth it. If you need an extra pair of headphones - fantastic - but even the bluetooth unit itself is worth the price.
Hey, thanks for the short review.
I'm using a Jabra Clipper. Till now it always started the walkman app, and the buttons did what i wanted. but today i had some problems with skipping songs. gotta see if it will reoccure.
the biggest issue i have is the weak signal strength. it's definitly working better than with my old S2, but never the less, the signal is very easy interrupted. Even if the phone is in the pocket of my jeans and i slightly cover it, because my hand is in there too.
I wonder if the MW1 has the same issues.
Not really. I have a Plantronics Voyager something something, and that has horrible distortion issues if I so much as think about putting the phone in the same-side jeans pocket, but the MW1 goes strong even if I'm in another room.
Of course, that could be because the MW1 unit is much larger...
I wonder if this will help: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.harleensahni.android.mbr&hl=no
My Jabra works even in 5m distance, but loses signal as soon as the phone is behind my back.
The MW1 costs twice as much as the clipper.
Nice app, will check it out. Thanks
Hello... I'm thinking in buying the MW1 but I have a question. Currently, I have the JAYS a-JAYS One+ that comes with a microphone.
I think the device of the MW1 has a built in mic so how it would behave if I connect the JAYS to the MW1 since the two have built in microphones? Which one would work to answer calls? The one in the MW1 or the one in the JAYS One+?
Thanks in advance.
The MW1. The microphone on the headphones wouldn't be connected to anything.
Note: I am making an educated guess.
2 Tom Fagerland,
I was wondering : any improvement since firmware update?
Another thing,
About the choice of application while pressing play/pause, have you tried the "Headset Button Controller" ?
I had similar problems with normal wired headset. This app solved my problems. Good luck!

Wait! Are all here talking about the same product?? MW1 Sony Wireless Headset Pro?
Then i must tell you what i think because i have both Clipper and MW1 and i can tell you whats are you doing wrong
first of all is THE ultimate headset..and if you don't use smart connect..you loose all the power of it..
link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...NvbS5zb255ZXJpY3Nzb24uZXh0cmFzLmxpdmV3YXJlIl0.
Second, it has PERFECT range about 30-40m with out problem! (clipper works fine around 10m with no walls)
Third, connect apps on your device to make the headset works like you want!
Link:https://play.google.com/store/apps/...4uZXh0cmFzLnNtYXJ0d2lyZWxlc3NoZWFkc2V0cHJvIl0.
and something about NFC??? Jesus..read the hardware specifications..NFC no needed
My friend i think you have no idea how powerful is that headset!
IF anyone wants help here i am!
Of course I use SmartConnect
About the buttoncontroller app: Excellent tip, I have bought it now (after checking that it's compatible) and will try it out this week. Thanks for that!
Otherwise, no changes since .253, no. I still use it, though. It's still fantastic, even with having to grab the phone and making adjustments to make Walkan stop playing at the same time as Audible...

About updates: If you have smart connect on ANY android phone..then you can update the Firmware of the headset from the phone (wifi needed). the other way you use MicroSd card (about 300kb .bin file on the root of the MicroSD) or using USB (hold BACK button and plug the usb) and software FLASH the .bin file automatic for you.

I just installed the new one today, I've been sick for about a week. This is the first update I've had since I started using it, so I've not had any changes.
Thanks a lot.
I am thinking of buying the MW1 and have the Xperia Z, so this is perfectly what I needed
Just one question:
Is the XZ compatible with its other features, like the display of the caller name and song title and viewing text messages/emails?

Yes, the Headset displays tracknames, caller names, etc. with my Xperia Z. But I had some trouble at first that the headset was not able to skip tracks when the screen was off and the phone locked with the android pin. After the latest update of my Z and the use of sony smart connect it works fine!

Used the headset for about a week with both headset button controller and the new firmware. No change at all, everything in the first post still stands unfortunately.
Still really like the headset, though, despite all that.
I've got a question about the mp3 player... if I pause it and turn it off... will it remember where I was the next time I turn it on.
I'm thinking of listening to audiobooks on it, but then it's very important that it remembers where it was last time when you power on the device.

They're pretty similar... Both have 2 row displays and FM receivers but while the SBH50 has NFC capabilities which is supposed to make pairing easier, the MW1 has a microSD card slot which turns it into a standalone mp3 player as well.
Not sure where you read that the SBH50 is more power efficient? On the sony site they mention 11h for the MW1 but say nothing about the SBH50.

Using Blue Yeti Microphone on Android? Please help...

Hello xda devs!
I've just bought a blue yeti microphone.
I want to livestream on Instagram and use it, however my device will not set the microphone to the external microphone.
There are apps such as Open Camera where you can record a video using your microphone as you can set the external microphone option in the settings, however I need a fix so my android device will ALWAYS use external microphone no matter what application is open.
I've literally tried everything.
I've also bought an adaptor which is female USB to headphone jack, however because the blue yeti needs to be powered by 5V, the headphone jack provides insufficient power to even power the yeti.
I've also tried an adaptor for female USB to usb type C. That powers the Yeti perfectly fine, however the problem persists.
It will not pick up the microphone in an external app that isn't "open camera".
I really need all the help I can get please as I'd love to stream and record with my yeti
Thank you
anyone able to help me please
Welcome to scamdroid.
If you want a real computer, camera, recording device, almost anything advanced users want (aka anyone who needs more than a phone to gossip about kim kardashian on and pester and stalk people busy doing important things) you need to buy such a dedicated device. When you begin to realize you are lied to about what it is then realize these are phones catered to people who gossip on phones 24/7 aka people who dont understand ANYTHING but running their mouths (the opposite of anyone educated or attempting to do anything with their life besides watch tv and gab).
Think about it, who made these phones popular? Apple.
Who is dumb enough to buy into apples lies that their computers are the worlds fastest supercomputers with counless customizations and other computers are just beige box shaped calculators and calanders. SJW kids at best.
You are merely experiencing one of hundreds or thousands of ways they sell this crap under lies and rip off schemes.
Keep down this road and you will begin to realize that XDA and Android talk and the 3rd site are all FILLED to the brim with mods and users who are apple kids whos tv told them to buy an android and youll end up like me avoiding these sites for the same reasons you avoid "the sun" "uk mail and any pop celebrity gossip site. Sure you want to see Kim Kardashians butt, but the people who congregate there make u wanna puke.
The answer is this probably isnt possible because scamdroid software is very locked down and unlike the lies they sold the crap on to compete with crApple they are actually locking the devices down MORE and not being more open.
Expect to not be able to read this when one of the fanboi mods gets triggered im telling you how it is with their favoirte -apple- google device.
Also i heard that the OTG cables were made obsolete and they dont work right unless its a direct USB-c one. $$$$$ I wouldnt expect it to work either way, ive got a few plain mic/speaker splitters and 2/3 dont work and if they do you have to plug them in a certain order and still the one that works distorts the line out.
If you really wanna attempt ill tell you how since these other people dont know. Starting basic droid camera you must plug splitter in first, THEN plug mic into mic in side of splitter. Your problem a little different but apprently the device is smart enough to do such extreme things and maybe im exposing a loophole they havent locked down yet :/ . Anyways try the order you plug crap into the system with xD Or better yet, stop using android like its more than a calaculator, or just throw it in the trash so other idiots can't waste your time calling and texting you about useless extending nothing/gossip and oopposite sex trying to leash u with it, or dont; either way just buy a dedicated camera that will work with the mic. Im done with this trendy hipsters "smart" phone crap, Its dumber than most humans and they are dumber than most dogs, so get a dog and give him your android as a chew toy and buy an actual camera and call it a day. remeber google and samsung sell cameras ad own audio companies, they dont want you to NOT buy that. Theyll only lock them down more and these sites will continue to make fake reviews praising them
With all due respect, "HorrorAngel," your response to the inquiry is useless, rude and absolutely wrong. 1) According to the manufacturer (Blue), the Yeti device CAN be used in conjunction with the Android Samsung 9 series phones. 2) The latest round of Samsung 9 series phones include a back-facing 12-megapixel, 4K quality camera, which is BETTER than the professional cameras I had in my network television studio, back in Chicago (ergo, your assertions are utter bunk). 3) I was just in Mexico City, where I watched as a professional television crew used this EXACT set-up (smartphone and Blue Yeti) for a remote, network interview. Do us all a favor, "Horror," and shut up, if you have nothing useful to contribute. As of now, your rant merely comes across as trolling crap. Get a life...
---------- Post added at 01:04 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:57 AM ----------
From what I gather (from Blue, the manufacturer), you can power the Yeti by using an adapter and plugging into the USB 3 port. I was given the same information in conversation with techs at Best Buy's "Geek Squad" support. I have just purchased a Samsung 9 Note, with a 12 megapixel camera, for the exact purpose of using this device to broadcast live, streaming television, using the Yeti as my microphone. Regardless of what a troll has ranted, in an earlier comment, I believe this setup with be successful, as others around the 'Net have already written of their successes. Once I have gotten everything set, and made a first test, I plan to report back on this site with my results.
Good luck! :good:

HorrorAngel bro I don't know about cameras but I am a computer engineer and I was horrirized reading your reply.
"scamdroid" is free and open source OS from google so ..... I can't see the scam ^^ 'you can actually download android, make some changes and then call it a ROM (custom android), as you can search "Best android custom roms" on the internet and install them into your phone. Thats why phones use android, its free. Apple btw makes you pay both for the phone and the software, that also means you can't change it. I have both android and iphone, and also have a phone with Ubuntu Touch from Linux, and I would recommend android because of that, the software is open and unlocked (it isnt by default, you can change it with 3 clicks to enter the risky mode. They do that to make people not destroy the phone's software).
Dont cry if android cant do something you want because it is software and if has limits. There are a lot of programmers like me working on making phones simple to understand but seems that even making it essy there are people like you that are simply blind and don't want to listen.

General IDOING UIS7862 with WRX[Updated with initial review]

After a lot of reviews and reading I just ordered a 9" Idoing with CanBus for my 2018 WRX with Harman Kardon. A lot of positive reviews from WRX owners, but not seeing a lot of love(or hate) for the Idoing hear on XDA. It's nearly identical to the Joying, but Joying will not support the HK system in my car.
The system is an android 10, UIS 7862 4+64. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32955093508.html
I'm curious what custom options I have in terms of UI, ROMs, Root,, apps?
I'm guessing from what I read(or lack there of) ROMs are a no go, but what about root and other customization options?
Sorry long time rooter and custom ROM user for android phones and tablets, but total noob to android head units.
I have a Kenwood with wireless android auto in my old car and was going to move it to this one, but absolutely hate Android Auto almost as much as I hate mirrorlink in the stock HU in my WRX(shame on you subaru). Also the kit to install it from crutchfield cost nearly as much as the android unit and canbus shipped from china, so figured i'd take a chance.
If it doesn't work out I'll go with the kenwood, but really hopeful this will be a winner. I spent a lot of time on chat with them and they are extremely responsive to questions(really like live chat) where a question to Joying took 3 days to get a response.
I know there is little chance the 4G module will work in the US(IDoing says it works with tmobile) so expecting to use wifi tether with my phone with native apps and pretend android auto doesn't exist. Other option is put a spare phone with sim permanently connected to USB, but unsure if USB tether will work.
I will keep reading, but any thoughts or pointers are welcome. Just don't tell me to replace my HK system, I know not everyone likes it, but I love it ;-)
FAIR WARNING!!!! After a year with no issue, My IDoing fried itself today!! I was driving and it shut down and for about 1 minute I could smell burnt electronics. This was a plug n play install so no cutting, no splicing, no soldering. I am in the process of seeing what IDoing will do for me, but I expect the answer is nothing since it is now over a year old.
Update: Well at least IDoing is talking to me. I pulled the unit out today and put the Stock stereo back in(UGGGH). At least nothing else got fried.
Update 2: So they are saying that they want me to pull the unit off the mounting trim and mail it to them and they will send me a knew one. I'm assuming this is going to cost me 100 bucks in shipping and need to wait a month or more, but it's better response than I expect.
Update 3: They "say" that once I give them tracking number for the unit, they will ship new unit and all i have to pay for is return shipping(30 dollars)
Final Update: Well it cost me a lot more than the USPS web site inferred (85 dollars), but they shipped a replacement the same day I gave them the tracking for the return. New unit showed up in just over a week, Unit looks new installed in less than an hour and all works great, software looks to be nearly identical except the AA software that it came with support wireless out of the box, so small bons. Unfortunate the original unit fried itself after a year, but considering it was out of warranty I have to commend Idoing on how they handled this, now I just need to remember all the tweaks I had installed ;-)
Roms, you have 2 options both are "Lite" versions meaning you have to buy the other features.
No real need for twrp.
Best bet make sure it works with Android auto wireless
Also pay close attention to the button layouts for the different types of screens.
Most development will be in the "Android auto" fourm
Also ask the seller to provided the zlink activation codes
Hmm, I'm curious why I would use AA at all with this as opposed to running apps on the unit with wifi tether? I've used AA Mirror in the past with my kenwood, but would prefer to avoid that path if possible.
It should work with AA, but not wireless as far as I know.
So my unit arrived today:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32955093508.html
Got it to the point of plugging it in to test in the car.
Adding Heating controls vents was a Piece of Cake and this thing looks amazing
Tested:
Screen: Fast and gorgeous responsive, seems very good in bright sunlight
capacitive buttons:, work well , Reset and reprogrammed and much better. Also Illumination is working with custom colors.
Well Documented low volume buzz... Yep it's there, goes away if you mute the radio. Will look for setting to reduce perhaps as well as talk to IDoing
Harman Kardon Canbus, Works plug and play. One issue that may be related is the Fade controls don't really work to fade to rear as they mute the rear, while balance controls work fine... Talking to IDoing now and they just confirmed that any factory amp radio has this issue.
Wifi 5ghz tether, works flawlessly, get 50mbit off my cell. Not the fastest but more than good enough
Play store/google account setup: works flawlessly. Have installed several apps already
Waze/GPS: works flawlessly
USB: 3 dongles, all work for USB Drives, haven't tested for phone connection
Flac: Works off all 3 usb(one main reason I went with this unit)
4g: Working well with t-mobile, not working with verizon. Verizon shows as full bars, bars when I went more urban, but there are no APN settings and I cant get data to work.
Bluetooth audio: works ok, sound doesn't seem fantastic, but i will probably never use.
Android Auto: Wired works great, can't get wireless to work even though my phone says the head unit supports it. Wired it's very fast and responsive and looks great.
Carplay: works wired and woreless, didn't test much as I don't use apple except for app testing.
Fubo/Video: Works very well screen is gorgeous
Developer options: IDoing gave me codes
Launcher: Pretty flexible with different options.
Got USB Debugging, ADB to work today. In developer setting there is 3 "..." at the top, in there is USB mode, top is host mode, bottom is device mode(ADB).
Once I got ADB going I got SystemUITuner granted permissions to control immersive mode for Waze and the like.
Custom Launcher: Got custom launchers working with a trick to use the setting in Nova to set default launcher. Now Rocking Car Web Guru launcher. Also Like Car Launcher Free Version.
Split screen : woks well and is even remembered as last view on soft boot.
Geekbench: 500+, 1300+ very pleased.
android auto with Head unit reloaded: tested with dev server method. Works well with wireless, but UI layout is pretty bad.
Console USB Adapter: Bought from amazon, works perfectly. Now 4 functioning USB
USB access for File Manager : doesn't work yet
Music Apps: do have access to USB
Automation: Used Macrodroid to start Android auto whenever the phone usb is plugged in, or to start spotifiy if no usb and wifi connects. Will do some more of these.
Overall:
Bummed about the rear speaker control, will have to see how much it affects my listening, found subwoofer control an tweaked EQ, sound is quite nice, still wish fade worked. Ok next note to others, make sure you calibrate your EQ with your back seats up. I forgot I had put them down to get my bike in and that was half my disappointment with the sound. Yes I still wish I had fade, but this thing sounds Really nice once dialed in.
The buzz is "irritating" that it exists, but unlikely a real issue for me.. Totally inaudible when car is running.
Otherwise this thing is pretty sweet so far.
Hi gottahavit,
I was just looking at this model on aliexpress and this post comes in just in time as you would say. I have a 2017 STI with no HK
What is your experience with the Mic for calls? does it retain the factory mic or do we have to plug in a new one?
You mention codes for Dev, can you share these?
The console USB Adapter - Which one did you use? do you have a link?
Have you tested ODB2 with apps like Torque?
The External GPS antenna is it required for it to work?
What about the 4G antennas?
thanks so much!

So first, IDoing have been fantastic in helping with the right purchase and the support, but that said this suffers from a lot of issues the other MFG units do. If you had HK I'd def recommend the IDoing as it's plug and play works great.
However if you don't have the HK I might suggest you get a version with optical or coax out. I think Joying and Daisata sell the same unit but with one or the other cabling.
I don't really make calls, but have tested a couple and was told the mic is ok. No you can't keep the stock mic or GPS.
Codes:3368 for factory, 7171 for Launchers
USB: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DJ4KVQ6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 works perfectly.
No ODB2 here, should be the same as the Joying in another thread.
You need the GPS if you want waze or maps on the unit vs AA or Carplay. I just mounted it on the top of the unit and it works great.
4G works fine with Tmobile, I tested with a Mint mobile trial, but cannot get proper APNs in for Verizon SIm to work(still on my hit list)
I recommend the coax as so many of these unit suffer from some form of ground loop interference which is just annoying even if it doesn't really affect the sound. I had no choice given the HK system
Even with the HK this thing cranks our a lot more power than the POS subaru unit..
These things are great and all the work of install is getting the old unit out. It's not perfect but leaps and bounds above stock.
The other reason to go with Joying is you'll get more support here than you will with the IDoing(very specialized to subaru).
If you do buy from IDoing just chat with them first they will help you pick the proper unit and any canbus for your car.
I would definitely go with the UIS7862 version, as this thing is fast!
Thanks for all the information! Really clarifies what i need to get. Ill look at the joying unit and see what the differences are... There was also the Teyes CC3, but man is it more expensive but looks absolutely awesome

Looking I see the unit 6+128 would be cool, but be careful, they all say forrester and have foreester button config for the top lcd and 4-wasy buttons. Maybe they have insert for WRX like IDoing. Also I don't see and coax or optical out, but just did quick search. Keep in mind that a lot of that marketing material is just that. I love my unit, but you can't believe everything you read. Also that's cheaper the IDoing or Joying. I think the key is make sure it has the key connections you want(optical, coax, HK my case) and that it fits your car.
Idoing is reseller of various types of kanged android head units.
Would be good to know factory/manufacturer or unit - sounds like it might be an FYT? You will then be able to know what rom options and mods are available from the forums.
Manufacturer can generally be identified from MCU version, what is the full MCU version listed?

IDoing is FYT, they are the only ones with the canbus for the HK system in my car, but that's fine for seryser as he/she has base stereo., but with no HK I recommend getting a unit with optical or coax.
Just a note on the WRX install, you will be tempted(as I was) to not drop the drivers air bag and try to get to the 10mm bolt on that side. DROP THE STUPID AIRBAG!!!!
It's really near impossible to get enough purchase on the bolt unless you do. I wasted an hour trying to not drop the air bag and gave up and had it done in 5 min.
When you put the new unit it, they are TIGHT, snap the clips at the bottom, bend in the clips at the top, then push REAL hard in the top of the screen to sanp the middle clips. They will snap in and what a beautiful fit this unit has. Make sure you run all your cables where you want them before you snap it in! You get 3 usb, I removed the cigarettes lighter under the unit and cut it and plugged it to have one USB in snapped in, ran the other two into the glove box along with the stock usb plug(was amazed it was long enough), then you just plug it into the adapter and one USB plug right in the glove box. Now I have one under the unit, one in the glove box, and 2 in the center console.
I just found the USB Mode toggle on the UIS7862 IDoing. It's the "..." menu at the root of developer setting. Two items in Chinese, top one is host mode, bottom is device mode. Got USB Debugging working fine even with usb-c cable from my laptop.

I can post pics later, but if you can get into developer settings. Immediately in the top right there is a menu button(...) click that and there is one option "USB Configuration", click that you get a popup with 2 options in it in chinese. The first is USB Host mode and the second is Device mode which will let you do USB Debugging from a laptop.
again this is on my IDoing, YMMV

Really "irritating" the permanent buzz. Only dissapear with volume to zero every time I turn on the unit. If somebody find a fix i will be more than happy

Yes I agree, at tis point it's the only real gripe I have with the unit. The thing is amazing compared to the crap that Subaru put in.
The issue seems to be pretty common on these chinese units, which is why if I didn't have the HK setup I would have bought one with Optical or Coax. Honestly you can't hear it when listening to music, but... If I ever pull the unit out again I will try to ground the board to see what that does.
IDoing has "tried" to be helpful, and they are extremely responsive on aliexpress.
I'm glad you found my review useful.
So I managed to get APN setting for verizon to stick, and I ca see the verizon network if I use a replacement mobile network settings like from CWG, however even though it will connect and I have the APN it sitll won't get any mobile data on the verizon network. I'm beginning to think they have it hardcoded in the System to only work with t-mobile. Either that or Verizon is rejecting data requests from the device even tough it lets it connect. I've tried with both true Verizon Sim and an Xfinity Mobile Sim(Both verizon, but different APNs).

I believe they do, only way around it without playing with internals is to get one with the coax or optical out and use that, then it's digital to your amp.

Think it might be possible to add some kind of pass-through filter/adapter to the RCA leads which could help reduce or eliminate the buzz?
