The way i have been able to edit mine is booting into recovery, mounting system, using ADB to pull it, edit it then push it back and set permissions.
I cant figure out which lines i need to amend to increase the speaker and headphone volumes though. What i change seems to have no effect and if i change to much it ends in a bootloop.
Any ideas?

i believe you have to mount the entire / root or /system/ as as RW first. I believe one of the tutorials for getting root showed how to do this in ES Explorer

Android symlink errors system/xbin/su PLEASE HELP

I have been trying to for over a week in the captivate forum to get ANYONE to try and help me and so far no one will. So i'm really hoping someone will take the time, i will PAY YOU UP FRONT over paypal to help me. I am DEAD SERIOUS.
Have a captivate, but this problem is not exclusive to this phone. This error has happened on just about any/every android phone there is.
Phone was working fine, have been putting any and all custom roms on that i wanted, but went to install a new custom rom (cog4), and it fails every single time at system/xbin/su. Now ANY rom i install (custom), gives me that same error. NO CUSTOM ROM WILL INSTALL. THEY ALL FAIL. I have flashed back to stock a million times, wiped, re-partitioned the sd card, master cleared, and done all of those in every combination possible. The ONLY rom i can put on here is the one i had RIGHT before this problem started (cog3.04). Only roms that can be flashed via odin will go on my phone now. All zip files fail.
I am not a noob and know my way around a computer. I promise if someone tries to help me i will be very prompt in my responses and will try ANYTHING that you ask me to. I have been googling for over a week hours a day, i am never gonna resolve this issue unless someone with the know-how helps me Every time this topic is brought up on any forum on the internet, the problem never gets solved and it fades away....there is no answers out there. Someone who knows this stuff is my only hope
I will pay you to help me even if your troubleshooting does not work
Just out of curiosity, did you open Rom Manager once you installed it to grant it superuser rights? Also, make sure you Click the top link in Rom Manger and choose your phone. "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery"
Yes tim i have done that.
I sent you a private message -- here is the same:
Have you tried adb root - and then from / rm -rf * and see if you can wipe all clean. Ofcourse if the issue is the partition, then this won't help. Also I have never tried this - as this has never been an issue for me.

I read that post but the update-script in Cog4 doesn't have those lines. You could in theory edit the script so that it just has those three lines but I'm not sure that would be sufficient to install Cog4. That may be a question for DG.
Do you have the root explorer app?

Not sure as this looks like a patch and specifically asks for no wipe. Also my knowledge is limited as to what harm you can do that will make the phone unusable -- BUT you are already into that realm . Perhaps someone with deeper specific experience can answer this????
Open Root Explorer and remount R/W. Switch to the system partition and look at the permissions on bin and xbin. They should both be rwxr-xr-x

If it doesn't install, try installing Terminal Emulator from the Market
Ok so inside of the system folder they both have the permissions set to what you wrote.... .
There is only a bin in the folder right before the system folder...should there be an xbin there too?

Thanks, I'll try this on my Play, and for ****s and giggles my motoactv.
The file didn't work on my phone when flashed ; From the looks of the update script the creator hasn't set the permissions correctly and has simply told the script to move the files from the .zip file to the system which wont work unless the system is mounted...Manually moving the files may work...
EDIT- Also, the thread you posted to is a copied version(with a rubbish .zip/cwm script.) of this guys mod http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1525226
DON'T FLASH IT! I manually mounted /system in recovery and then flashed the file.
Now I'm in BOOTLOOP!
You may be able to fix that by setting the permissions of the files ; this may be a long process ; I'm dont really know much about these things so i may be wrong.
Tried this on CM7
Works pretty well

I'm also wondering why so many users in the original thread say it sounds better than without using it it couldn't even get loaded by system without setting proper permissions...
I flashed the zip easily after downloading it on a stock-based .62 rom. idk why others are having problems. About the sound..I think it sounds better but I'm not sure because of my weak memory but I definitely do not hate how my headphones sound right now.
yea I flashed this no problem too thanks man!
manually mount /system and done flashing it.
though I can't really tell what's the difference than before...
Flashed fine, I think it's made a difference not too sure though. Thanks anyway.

How is it possible, guys that this mod works in your phones?
Have you tried manually mounting /system partition and then flashing .zip file? Flashing .zip without manual mounting DOES NOT PUSH the files to /system because script that installs the files is wrong! It doeas not mount /system itself so that NONE of the files are pushed!
I tried flashing with mounted /system on .42 and .62 ROM and both went dead and bootlooping...

Yup, most people "flashing" the file instead of moving them over are probably hearing what they want to hear thus the occasional"not sure if it made a difference" posts ; I'm not installing this either way since a good music play i.e power amp can do the same thing or maybe even better (according to some websites).

So chances are good that its not actually working? If you mounted system in CWM and afterwards phone went into bootloop, wouldnt it do the same if I manually swap these files individually? I just flashed it(without mounting system) and I see no change. Will this work with SE music player?

That is incorrect. If you turn up the bass on poweramp it sounds muffled, even with beats which have an amazing quality and the music isn't even playing that loud when compared to my brothers iPhone. I would assume that this flashable gives us an update sound lib to support this.

How to replace one file when failing to boot

Hey guys
I screwed up my vold.fstab trying to get "_ExternalSD" back.
Unfortunately! I did not run a nandroid before I made the change.
Now, I can dirty flash my rom on top, or go back to a nandroid from a few days ago, but I'd really just like to recover and go on my merry way. And maybe learn something in the process.
Only thing is, I can't figure out how to access the phone other than the External SD card through CWM.
Can I mount the internal /system and access through USB? Is there some facility to copy a file from one point to another? Any other methods? I guess the phone has to be up to run ADB, right?
I don't know how to generate a flashable zip but I could extract the original version of the file from the original rom. I assume that its non trivial to create a flashable zip, but maybe someone can comment? It looks like there is signing and certificates involved..
thanks for any ideas

this is why i hate it when people make those guides.
messing with the vold.fstab is dangerous (even though its only a few lines) if your trying to recover your data, give up. its not going to happen. (sorry)
when you edit the vold.fstab it messed up the partitions on your internal SD card and most likely did the equivalent of wiped your /system partition. (or another important one.) your actually lucky it did not completely brick your phone.
your post was a little vague, but if you can, just restore an older nandroid, or wipe everything and install another ROM. (you can try dirty flashing but i dont think itll work)
if you cannot access CWM, then follow the steps in This guide. it should get you back up on your feet. after you follow that guide flash a gingerbread ROM (any gingerbread rom will do fine) then you can reboot and flash any ROM you want. (it needs this to fix a quirk in that script)
Hope you get it fixed
EDIT: re read your post, if your feeling adventurous and want to give it a shot, boot into CWM and connect it via usb. you can now get into an ADB shell on your phone by typing 'adb shell' if you have adb all setup and working. (im working from memory here so dont quote me on any of this)
now, you should be able to access your /system folder from that shell. be very careful though, i dont have much experience right here, and if i remember correctly you might not be in the full root directory yet)
if you can get into it try replacing your vold.fstab with a stock one,
if you dont have a stock one lying around, make a nandroid of the current state of the rom, then flash another rom, pull the vold.fstab, then re-restore back to the broken one and restore it (id upload mine but my phone is OOC right now )
after that just reboot and hope it resolves itself, if not then just follow my advice above
and keep that guide i linked to handy, messing around in CWM has the ability to brick your phone, if it does, then just follow that guide.

re read your post and updated my last post right after you posted
after dealing with noobies all day, i forget sometimes people want to try big things
Thanks guys. The info I was missing was there's no special trick to attaching adb while in CWM! Just plug in!
My phone is back up and running and partitions are fine as far as I can see after just booting up.
Hi there! I messed up with the vold.fstab filfe on my tablet – I replaced it with a downloaded file with the intention to transfer apps to my external SD card.
Now my tablet is only showing the startup logo and won’t continue loading. I can access recovery mode. Now I want to restore the original vold.fstab file.
My questions:
1. Using the Android SDK, the file explorer does not show any files, though my tablet is recognized.
2. Using adb push, it yields an error: permission denied, how to successfully push the original vold.fstab and replace the existing vold.fstab?
3. If I dump an image of my tablet and edit the dumped image, would this be easier compared to the steps above?
Thanks!

Mansa_noob, yes, my tablet is rooted. I followed some instructions about adb but had an error saying access denied, and also no files are displayed at file explorer. See my posts above. I also mounted it successfully. I will post some sreenshots later.
Please if you have some instructions, I am willing to try.

Hi twitchyEye, it did not work. It attemps to install (using the install update from ext sd card) but then says installation aborted.

What recovery are you using? I suck with adb so I got nothing on that front.
It was the stock recovery from my Tablet. I don't have it on hand right now, I will post later. The chipset is RK3066. My problem is my tablet has no official support on the internet (maybe becaue it's still new). Model is Skyworth S71(3G).
I see. Yeah this is over my head man. I thought for sure you were running a custom recovery and it was an easy answer. I'm actually struggling right now with adb myself with a similar issue something about permissions whenever I try to do anything to my phone. So I guess right now would be a perfect time for somebody to chime in with a smarter answer!

I want to try, but the stock recovery is my last hold as I have no stock ROM. If I overwrite the stock ROM, I cannot reinstall it as I don't have a copy of it.
So why not flash cwm with nvflash and then make a backup of your current stock rom? I did exactly that.

i think via adb we can do that. But I dont have that knowledge. Its always better that u should switch to new stable ddlf2 value pack. Ddkp3 is a little bit older rom. Lots of mods are avilable for DDLF2 rom. And from next time always keep a backup in hand using cwm.

I think this will work. For that first flash xda_bck CF root v14 fix verson kernel.
Could you tell us the system files and libs you have changed? Fix Permissions (I think??) only fixes APK permissions, since the OP said he also played around with /system/lib, I believe it will take a lot more. I can help you as I know how to use ADB and most of its commands. If you could tell us the files you have changed, I will be able to write a small guide here. All what you need to do is just to Chmod (CHange MODe) and Chown (CHange OWNer) some files (If you have modded any libs, you would also have to adb push). Its pretty simple trust me

I used "i think???" cz i wsnt sure if it czd the loop

Could you tell us the system files and libs you have changed? Fix Permissions (I think??) only fixes APK permissions, since the OP said he also played around with /system/lib, I believe it will take a lot more. I can help you as I know how to use ADB and most of its commands. If you could tell us the files you have changed, I will be able to write a small guide here. I was trying to push GTALK 1.3 WITH VOICE & VIDEO in my mobile using root explorer....as far i remembr, first i changed the permisn in both SYSTEM/APP & SYSTEM/LIB to RWXRWXRWX....i cud push d APK FILE but failed to push the LIBRARY FILE(forgot d name)....it kept saying,"OPERATION FAILED". I tried it alot of tym bt stil same result. I assume then i somehow unmarked the write & execution option in permissns aftr i failed to proceed wd RWXRWXRWX set of permissions....and it hv to b in system/library folder. Aftr dat whn i exit,i saw system bcm unstable & i wasnt able to acess the apps requiring root acess.then i rebooted it,wich leaded to this.

Not to be rude, but believe me, it seems like your dragging.
As most trusted contributors and experienced people here in this community have already told you to reflash. Please try that.
If you're able to charge(the green charging symbol appears), most probably you'd bee able to enter the download mode(vol down + home button + power button combo). You've not reported if you ever tried that.
Goto ddlf2 or xxkpu.
Still if you're not clear, please ask for a detailed guide. Would be happy to help
flash CF ROOT, and then access phone shell via "adb shell" while in recovery mode, then you can fix what you broke. CWM has adb enabled in most cases. If you just want it to boot again, you could simply flash from odin the whole rom, and then update via kies or another .tar rom and it will work normally again.
why dont you have CWM?, are you sure you are root?

Is the lib file by chance, "libtalk_jni.so"? there are two possibilities that occur when you get operation failed. One is that your "/system" directory is full, install a deodex package and you should be good to go, no need for anything else. Problem is, I have never heard of I9003XWKPH update before or if they have a deodex package in our forums. The other, is that you had forgotten to "adb remount", but seeing that you had pushed the app and it had worked, means that it isn't this one. Since you did not push over the lib file, you needn't worry about it. Lib file changes are notorious for causing bootloops on our phone unless we Hexedit them, and even then its not always 100%
I had already replied to this guys pm asking him to flash the latest firmware for his region. But I suppose he is what his name suggests. He is just wasting our time here.

Sorry for the very late reply
its not really the motherboard who has the problem, it is the internal memory. The only thing to fix it is to replace the motherboard. And yes, even your internal mem./motherboard is broken, you can still access the recovery mode, download mode and charge it. To know If your internal mem./motherboard is really broken, go to recovery mode a nd when you get this message:
E: Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1

then your mem./motherboard is really broken. Good luck!

sdcard permissions messed up?

Ive factory reset several times now, I've reflashed the android l preview image several times, and flashed two 5.0 roms over it even, and i even tried a multiboot with cm11. My device can't take pictures, video, basically anything to do with the camera doesnt work. Pictures seem to take, but don't save. Video or any panorama crashes the camera, and the error logs show something about permission denied to the files they are trying to create. How can i fix this?
Did you copy all your data back to the phone via recovery?
Usually for L, you run
su
restorecon -FR /data/media/0
...which is mentioned in his sticky lots of times.
But If you copied all sdcard data back to your phone via recovery, there's a different approach

I tried that one, it did nothing and camera still acted up. I've tried every app on the store. Nothing seems to be allowed to write to DCIM, even though I can create files with a normal file manager just fine.

I just tried creating a file inside the camera folder inside DCIM and permission was denied. How could I fix that?

Using a root explorer, go to /data/media/0/Download and set all the permissions to read, write and execute.
Then hopefully you can download stuff.
Please check that. If that works, I'll let you know the next step

I can already download stuff. Is it a common problem with L for this to happen? I've looked it up and found little to nothing.

I realize I just went full retard thanks to looking in the camera for permission. I had earlier set permissions with chmod from recovery for the DCIM directory to 777, but not the Camera directory within. Thanks for helping, though!

One problem I have consistently had however is that my launcher and default camera app are never remembered. How can I fix this?

No it's uncommon. I've only sewn it for people using recovery or adb to push and pull sdcard folders.
Download and flash this zip via recovery.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2849968&d=1405300107
and it seems that for any kind of panorama or photosphere it still crashes
they crash with an event trace of java.lang.NullPointerException: attempt to invoke virtual method 'void java.io.FileWriter.close()' on a null object reference
at
com.google.android.apps.lightcycle.panoramamodule.stopcapture(panoramamodule.java:802
etc
etc
etc
Its permissions, we know that. Please flash the fix I posted before anything else.

Ok, so pushing it to the sd with adb won't break even more permissions?

Why would you need to do that? You can download it direct to your phone.

No problem.
The adb (or TWRP MTP) only seems to break permissions if you're pushing folders. Pishing individual files should be fine.

is this problem new to android l or has it been around a while? I'll also admit I do a lot of adb push/pull/commands and such, and for a lot of the time need to because I only have a wired connection with my computer at school, is there a way to avoid this problem in the future?

Its not related to L at all. Files should be fine to push. Its just folders I think that cause the issue.
