Verizon note edge root / viper - Note Edge Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Got my note edge and aside the nasty side effect these Samsung phones have called TouchWiz I love it
Can't wait for the development team to figure out how to root the vzw model
why they continue to sell us locked devices is beyond me. The 1 thing I'm missing
and feel I can't live without for long is viper4android
That requires root and since that isn't available yet anyone know of a good
alternative that doesn't require root? Something close to on par with viper?

Plausible ways for custom ROMS (Sept 2014)?

I am quite interested how the independent development of this device is gonna turn and if anyone is in the mood on forgetting their fear of spoiler, what are ideas on hand on how can a custom ROM can make use of the secondary screen or it doesn't look good according to Samsung's SDK?
(Did not have the chance on see the SDK myself and probably will not have the time until further notice) and quite frankly I might sit as an spectator rather than helping in development for this one.
99% this will be the next device for which i will develop both a rom and a kernel..
I have no plans so there will be no spoilers here the only plan i have is to mod the _______ out of the secondary screen...
Im waiting for the 1st system dump to see what we have to play with here..
and of course for the samsung official source...
I dont know why people look down on this device..
Its like the DISAPPOINTING Note 4 but with something new for once..
We will see..
Im glad to see some interest on this device..
great news

That is very encouraging. I agree with you. You can get a note 4, or a note 4 plus a cool new feature. Why not the edge?
I am not a developer at all, but I cannot live with stock roms for the sake of me! I am 99% sure to be getting a Note Edge, and I am so happy to see there is a dev already onboard with it!
My question is... this is obviously touchwiz... but do you see the "Edge" screen ever being implemented in custom AOSP roms fot the Note Edge in the future? Or would flashing AOSP make that Edge screen completely black...?
Thanks

I dont see why that would be impossible. Def not easy but there are some great minds out there
But my experience says that first you will see a few TW kernels before an AOSP one.. And usually the 1st AOSP takes a while.. And it needs a few releases before it can be a daily driver..
And im sorry i may disappoint you my man but i build roms and kernels for TW.. I know.. we all have our flaws

hahha, don't worry, you do your thing! I have a complicated relationship with Samsung... I love their galaxy line, yet hate TouchWiz lol. But just like any new galaxy device, TW roms are always up first, and AOSP a few months later. As long as every single samsung bloatware can be removed from TW and xposed framework is running, I'm satisfied lol
All I'll NEED is root for exposed, and very debloated. And I'll be happy.
Maybe a blue/black theme.

You will definitely have those
I LOVE this thread!! Your requests are the best because they are definitely doable
Ill make an aroma to give the option for what bloat you will want to install or not install. If aroma causes us any issues i can always make a "debloater" (its a simple script that you flash and remove the bloat you want)
Something that worries me though you guys.. Is is gonna be only in a few markets?? I read that initially it maybe only in Asian Markets
Well I'm not sure where you are, but I'm in the US.
It will be coming for sure to all 4 major carriers here.

I know the Note 4 is coming everywhere, but you are right... the Note Edge is restricted to a limited market. Usually, that means the phone will be available in all countries but at full price. Anyways, we should all expect a "premium" price for this device, Samsung said so themselves, already trying to save up, lol. I'm in Canada, I doubt it will come here, but I'm pretty confident I'll be able to import it somehow. With all the current technology it has, it should have multiple LTE radios in it.

hahaha, funny, you know what I LOVE? The fact you want to try to mod the _______ out of the secondary screen! :highfive:
My main concern is which Provider will I go with? I have both VZW and Sprint and the note 3 was dominated by Sprint Developers but yet some previous High end devices dominated by VZW devs..I obviously want to go with where it's hot.
I know for sure it will be available mid October on AT&T in the U.S. and will be available with the edge upgrade.
This Note 3 and I have rocked on together for the past year with Hyperdrive ROM. But this new device just screams "Buy me and impress everyone!"
I have money banked for the Note Edge, full retail. But I've seen price estimates as high as USD $1300! How on EARTH I can mentally justify paying half again for a phone's "coolness" isn't something I've completely reconciled yet... but if I do get the Edge, I will likely have it for at least two or three years. The Darling Bride will have a cow - I mean, she will give live birth to a bovine creature - if she finds out I just plunked down that much payola for a PHONE. This had better be really, really good, because it's going to be me and that phone in the doghouse until around Christmas!
It doesn't help that she watched the Unpacked event and wants her own Note 4. That's putting a hurt in the wallet!
Back on topic: will the developer community embrace this "limited availability" device, or concentrate on the Note 4? I want the Edge, but I REALLY want a rooted and ROMmed Edge.
It seems that the Edge has the same functionality as the Note 4... with the added functionality of the edge screen. So a ROM for the Note 4 should easily be ported over to the Edge with just a few extra lines of code. One would think.
So I really, really hope that you fine developers find a root exploit, a suitable bootstrap method, and start cranking out ROMs for the Edge. That would be the icing on the cake, baby!
I'm really interested in the Note 4 Edge but from what I've read about the device is that it's extremely annoying to hold and use with one hand. You keep activating the side screen when trying to hold the device tight enough for it not to fall. I can't see any way custom software would get around that issue.
On the other hand, I wish Samsung kept up with their pattern and made it a 5.9" device, even if just for the sake of having a bigger battery. A 20 mAh increase is practically no increase, especially when you're driving that many more pixels. I'm worried about battery life on this thing.
The real question since this device is certain to hit all four major US Carriers. Which carriers will have the bootloader locked down to damn near uselessness. I am willing to bet AT&T and Verizon will have them locked down to hell (For sure AT&T I mean the whole S line starting with the S4 are still locked down as in no custom kernels which is annoying to say the least).

OH I can assure you that Verizon's bootloader will be locked down and it'll be bloated to smithereens! Now that Hashcode has stopped all development for Safestrap, I'm really hoping and praying that another developer will take the torch, so to speak, and create a bootstrapper for the Note 4 & Note Edge. Once we have a root exploit and a bootstrap, let the ROMming begin!

That's why I'm leaning towards the Sprint one. It seems like they don't do a lot of "lockdowns" on their devices..

[BOUNTY][ROM] Who Would Contribute To The Bounty For MiUi

MiUi Note Edge with TouchWiz features and Edge Panel Rom, maybe a 805 unified rom for mostly full compatibility.
We already know our lil devices stands out from the rest even it's younger sibling the S6 Edge, let's make it stand out even more? LoL
If it applies to the Sprint Note Edge (N915P), I'd throw a fair chunk of money in the pot. Really, I'd throw a fair chunk of money in the pot for any ROM on this awesome device - since Samsung has decided it wants to be Apple, I'm going to be hanging onto this beast until another manufacturer comes out with a better device.
I believe it uses a 805 too right, only version I excluded was the international version, but who knows anything is possible someone could port it over for that version.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/snapdragon-dev/miui-7-samsung-note4almost-snapdragon-t3221861 Now if there's any Edge developers who would be down to add Edge panels to the rom. it's possible to flash to the Note Edge, I gathered this much from a T-Mo Edge user flashing a TekHD TEKXodus T-Mo Note 4 from onto their Edge, so it can be done and as MiUi can use TouchWiz stuff cause they use the same framework or parts of it, so this wouldn't be a impossible task and would be rather News worthy too.

Why you can't root your Samsung Galaxy S6 Verizon on 5.1.1.

========================================
Why you can't root your Samsung Galaxy S6 Verizon on 5.1.1.
========================================
1.) The Bootloader is locked so you can't like flash a package to root your phone.
2.) There are no true exploits...
^ This means that there are no exploits for the Samsung Galaxy S6 Verizon, what do I mean by this ? Well I don't consider a FLASH FILE to be a exploit of some sorts mostly because this root method is using recovery or download mode.
3.) I hope knox dies in a fire somewhere.
4.) No one is developing a exploit to root the Samsung Galaxy S6 Verizon without tripping knox
^ Why is this ? Well unlike the iOS jailbreaking community where to jailbreak your iphone you need to use a exploit that somebody put into a executable that will also install cydia and mobile substrate. We have gotten to used to using recovery mode or download mode to root a device, so when a device comes out with a locked bootloader people don't want to take the time to make a exploit for this new device.
=======================================
If anybody can post a better thread about
why you can't root the Samsung Galaxy S6 Verizon on 5.1.1.
that will be much appreciated.
=======================================
1. So you can't like, root it, like ever ever?
2. Sure there are, some people may simply choose not to publicly share them.
3. Knox isn't so bad. It's no worse than a locked boot loader.
4. No one? Did you confirm with all of *them*?
Also: s/a/an is OK sometimes.
s6 is like the note 3 not enough people care about it,like an unjailbroken iphone were just another sheep in the flock ,i actually hate my s6 compared to my s5 (should of never switched)they took a great phone and in my opinion ruined it all the best features i used to love are no more i find myself using my iphone more and more lateley (jailbroken of course).just my thoughts have a great day all.
I feel the same way about my S6 compared to my S4. I didn't have a problem with the plastic build, the SD card, the removable battery, and the perfect size and screen. All they had to do was speed up the internals and that's it. I too should have kept my S4. Next phone is gonna be Nexus for sure.

Doubts regarding this phone

Hello guys, recently I dropped my LG G2 and broke its screen, so I decided to buy a new phone. I've searched a lot in the internet and I think I'm going to buy a Galaxy S7, but before doing so, I would like to get these questions answered (I would really appreciate if you could answer these questions, it'd help me a lot):
1. Which version would you recommend me to buy, S7 or S7 Edge? Is it purely up to my taste or are there any key differences? When it comes to my taste, I prefer S7 because I don't like the curved edges.
2. Should I pick the Snapdragon version or Exynos version? I have the possibility to choose, which one is better?
3. I'm afraid of burn-ins that are very common on AMOLED screens, does this phone suffer from kind of problem?
4. Is it possible for me to root this phone and then unroot it without letting Samsung know it was previously rooted (I mean, still get warranty after unroot)?
5. What about custom ROMs? Are they easy to install on this phone? what about camera driver, is it released by Samsung or is it closed source? (I'm asking this because my current phone, LG G2, doesn't have its camera driver released by LG, that means, we use a generic camera driver on custom ROMs like LineageOS and thus reduces the camera quality a lot)
Thank you for your time
1. Personal choice, same specs, bigger battery/screen in Edge
2. Exynos (Snapdragon is bootloader locked)
3. Not been many complaints, only a handful
4. No, once you flash custom you permanently trip KNOX, no reset
5. Not as easy as older phones but still fairly easy, camera driver not open source afaik, needs a touchwiz ROM for full quality
Thank you for your answers.
About question 4, all I want to do by now is root and use this app:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2017/08/12/hands-battery-charge-limit-rooted-devices-exactly-expect/
Don't you think I can root and use this, then unroot and still get warranty? (I'm asking this because you said "flash custom", maybe you got me wrong)
I think, re: 4, and what Detection said is that you will trip the Knox, and then Samsung will know the phone has been OS tampered at it's root level. What will Samsung do then about your warranty, knowing you intentionally breached their OEM OS?
Root is custom, root trips knox

Why do people buy Samsung Devices ?

Really !!! Why do people buy Samsung Devices ?
Yes I own a Galaxy S7 and yes I know what board this is but
The phone provided to me by work and I am stuck with it
This is a work phone I can not debloat, root, do custom ROMs
So what do I have,
I have a device that will never see Android 8.1, hell even the S 9 is at 8.0 "You know the S 9 may get Android 9.0 in the summer of 2019 if they are lucky.
I will not hold my breath for even 8.0
Every second day it seems Samsung pushes on my device some "Samsung" bloat they think I want, I which I can never uninstall and if I try to disable it, it will turn back on.
They feel they have a great, interface..... Without Nova Launcher I will be lost.
Thank you for not having Bixby..... maybe Samsung will decide to push that piece of junk to the S7 but for now I am free
Really I hate the S7, the bloat, being locked down, the lack of updates but people still buy them ?
Why ?
Maybe a major market is Corporations that like locked down devices.
Yes the company says here is your S7 ..... enjoy.
I hate the Samsung S9 so much I may actually buy my own device for work "The Pixel", think I will wait for the Pixel 3 but then ..... to Samsung so long and thanks for the Bloat.
Because they are good at making commercials so they lie people. And people are stupid and buying every year the new Samsung. They don't give a damn about android, they just want the latest model from Samsung.
@andrei1412
Not really... Samsung is simply the best hardware manufacturer, best amoled display (always the brightest every year), best camera (yes other manufacurer are building nice ones too), really good build quality overall, Samsung theme store (to establish android vanilla look, who else is featureing this?). You don't need to debloat since you don't neeed to use the samsung apps. Debloating can lead to increased battery drain.
As they said above, usually the best hardware for droid phones at that point in time and the Samsung hype makes it same league as iPhone so anyone who dislikes Apple usually go Samsung if they don't go HTC, or moto. For me I have owned the majority of every galaxy s and these phones with custom roms always seemed to be the best droid phone on the market in terms of battery life and performance.

Probably not worth it if you use those features, I think some of the roms can be ran with no root cause there based on stock and still use that stuff but I'm not sure about Knox. I've only had this s7 flat for a week and tried, bobcat rom, slim stable 2.0, and I'm on ultimate nougat now. I'm really liking ultimate nougats look with the theme, battery life so far, and the debloat.
These 3 seem stable but there's a ton of roms to choose from so you would have to test for yourself to determine your best and read/ sift through the threads and see what people are saying about the rom.
You can disable all bloat using a package disabler, which works without root. Android 8.0 is coming in 2 weeks, and I don't know why you even want 8.1 because there are almost no changes to talk about. Even 8.0's most notable feature PIP has been available in Samsung devices for a long time.
Your problems about rooting and custom ROMs are only because it's a work phone.
It looks like you didn't research any of your problems before coming to rant here :/

We (as a household) have a rather large number of Samsung devices - the S7 is, in fact, the first one that was NOT purchased deliberately (I got it as a gift) and replaced the far-older Galaxy Nexus (which I got from my mother). We also have two Galaxy tablets and four Samsung HDTVs (and two Samsung optical drives). Why all the Samsung hardware? Three words - bang for buck. Look at ALL the areas in which Samsung makes hardware (from Android to PC to appliances they have (and rather consistently) offered top-ten bang-for-buck - and not just in the US; if you do that, your products will sell. Are they perfect? No; however, who is? Even the folks that have DINGED Samsung admit that it is often due to issues with a specific Samsung product or a specific lack (in the case of the S7, it's about the locked bootloader). Still, is an unlocked bootloader that big a plus on the devices that compete with the S7 and up? How many of those devices have issues WORSE than those of the S7 and above - even with the locked bootloader (such as the Pixel and Pixel2)?

I'm also in Canada and usually we get updates without delay after their release from Samsung. From what I've seen (on their OS upgrade schedule), they only announce the release dates for updates a couple of days before we actually get them. My source is another phone carrier in another country: http://www.guncelmiyiz.com/akilli-telefon .
For the bloatware, you can uninstall all updates and keep the stubs (which will remove most of the app), and then freeze the app using AdHell or SABS. Although there isn't much bloatware to start with on phones in Canada.

You know what I find imbecilic is Samsung fanboys, you claim you like Android yet you sign up with a company that does not give you a pure Android Experience.
You are so blind to Samsung you do not realize their hardware is not significantly better than from other manufacturers.
Amoled unless if you are and anal idiot, displays are subjective
Top Camera this is a S7 while the camera is good "it is not the best"
Large battery do you suppose other phone have significantly worse better live ?
Top processor many phones have newer generation processors, but like the "best" display the processor even on a 2 year old device runs everything fine.
Wireless Charging is at times convenient but not a deal maker you do know Wireless chargers are slower and not as efficient as chargers that some people have a hard time with figuring out. "Do some research look it up"
IP68 once again, you know out of the several dozen Android devices I purchased ....... not one ever got water damaged.
Out of all of these ......
I rather have Android as it is meet to be from the inventors non modified and non skinned
Hardware be damned
And yes I know what Google introduced in 8.1 https://www.xda-developers.com/android-8-1-oreo-developer-preview-features/
The Essential phone skipped Android 8.0 and when directly to 8.1
Samsung S9 and S9+ released with 8.0
Rogers at the time only had the Samsung S7, no other devices.
Flaming is not tolerated on XDA and any escalation in this thread will result in action against the users at fault and/or the thread being closed.
Hopefully this discussion can be a civil exchange of opinions from both Samsung haters and lovers alike. We must all accept that as human beings, each one of us is entitled to our opinion and/or preferences, regardless of whether they're seen as logical or not by others.
Keep it cool, dudes.

They may not have significantly better hardware now, but it was still the best of its time. The camera was the best until the Pixel came out half a year later. There were no compromises with this phone, and as much as you try make hardware features not seem not as important, they make a difference when choosing between something like a iPhone 6s/7 and another device.
And now I ask, how is anything of what you've said detract from the Android experience? Samsung may add features to Android, but they don't ever take away. I can also fully reskin Touchwiz to look like stock with any theme I like using Substratum and Nova Launcher. I also don't know why Android 8.1 is so important to you, as everything is just a UI change.
You probably shouldn't have bought a 2 year old non-Google phone if you wanted to jerk off to having the latest UI from Google. Also, you should realize that many people don't care about simple UI changes or optical differences. Maybe if we were iOS users, we would care, but this is a forum for Android enthusiasts.
Don't call others fanboys or other silly names just because they have different expectations when they buy a device.

I guess we will see in 2 weeks. Again, when is the last time Samsung announced the specific date for an update well before it releases?
I did not start the name calling but when "coradux" called me an imbecile, who would not take it personally.
I own a S7 now, will likely be buying a Pixel XL 3 "or whatever it is called in October"
Some people like me want quick updates and pure Android, others do not care.
I really did not know what I hoped to prove from this post. I think it should be closed.
