Thanks for all the help on here guys. I loved my S4 but it was time to upgrade. Even though I have been stuck on Samsung phones for years, I decided to switch to the Nexus 6. With carriers locking everything down I figured I might as well. I'm extremely happy with this device so far.

AT&T is the one that locks bootloaders on Samsung!!!! NOT Samsung...
Reread what I said. "With CARRIERS locking everything down." Never said Samsung was doing it. I was just saying I've always used a Samsung phone, but since they are all being locked on my current carrier I switched to the Nexus.

AT&T had to get Samsung's approval to modify the bootloaders to lock them, so Samsung was complicit in it, they could have easily said no.
They make the most popular phone on earth, I doubt AT&T or Verizon would have stopped carrying them and have their customers buy them elsewhere if they were threatening to drop the phone from their plans.

Does AT&T lock them on all their phones??? Think I have read that T-Mobile did not lock their Samsung phones, not sure on others at T-Mobile.

I believe so, yes. AT&T has been on the record as stating that they refuse to support any phone with a non-locked bootloader (though, I have no idea where they stand on the new Nexus 6, which I don't believe has one and they do carry).

That doesn't stop HTC from providing unlockable bootloaders on the M7/M8. They allow you to unlock your bootloader in exchange for your warranty, even on AT&T,but Samsung doesn't. I think LG will start unlocking bootloaders soon as well.
If I could afford it or should I say the wife wouldn't pitch a fit I think the Nexus 6 would be my choice as well. I have been on T-Mobile for over 10 years but got the AT&T S4 for free or I wouldn't be in this locked mess.
Yeah. So far I have been using the Nexus since I made this post. Unlocking and rooting were easy and I love 5.0.1. It was a big change from Samsung's S4 having no real buttons and such. But so far I have no complaints. Not gonna lie it did take a few days yo adjust to it. Still glad I made this switch though. I may use a Samsung device again someday, but if I do I would have to go the Developer route.
You know you could just get a T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S4 or S5 since it has no locked bootloader and then SIM unlock it to work on AT&T.
I got lucky with my Galaxy S4, as it came with the MDL firmware. As soon as I realized it, I froze all the OTA crap so I can take advantage of the LOKI exploit and install Clockwork mod recovery.
Yep without the loki exploit, I dont think gs4 is worth it... I dont safestrap.

Well the S5 is officially in full swing and I still got one year left in my contract, still could've found a way to get the money to upgrade but honestly why bother. I'm still fortunate enough to use Loki and this phones specs very close to the S5. Anyone else here gonna wait for the inevitable S6 next year like me or I'm I gonna be all alone

I am sticking with my S4 for another year or so. Do you have the drop your 2 year contract and get a new device on Next offer? I do and I figured if anything happened I would get the S5 or S6 with that upgrade since it would be the same as paying full price anyway. I'm interested to see what the S6 will have to offer. I am excited about the S5 camera features. I use my phone to do actual photography, to prove that yes it can be done.
This thread will get locked by the mods, or moved, but I'm done with Samsungs on AT&T. Especially with the rumors I hear about ALL phones having a locked bootloader going forward. It would be different if the devs were able to make some semblance of headway with cracking that, so we can just give them the middle-finger ("them" being AT&T, since it's not Samsung's fault we're in this predicament per se). I love the craftsmanship, look, and performance of Samsung, but it's all for naught if I can't customize my phone to my liking.
My next device will be whatever the next Nexus is. No contractual obligations, will work with pretty much any US carrier, and while a hefty investment by comparison to the usual $150 I fork over every 2 years for a new phone, I'll OWN that ***** outright. So many items on the "plus" column to owning a Google device.
It's really a shame that the carriers don't cater to those of us in this community. I won't go as far as to say they'll regret losing sales, because at the end of the day their money is made on the plans, not the phones. Still, there is a certain amount of satisfaction to me in both knowing I have other options for phones while maintaining the provider, as well as not having to abide the ridiculous security measures put in place by the carrier I choose to subscribe to.

I'm on at&t and I'm not going back to samsung but htc will let you unlock the bootloader ,hell they'll even give it to you

This is very promising, I used HTC exclusively before my S3 2 years ago. I love them, but they're hit-or-miss, for sure. This year it's the M8, but with their track-record, another decent HTC phone won't be out until another couple of years or more down the road. Especially with all the changes, moving, and downsizing that company continues to do.
I have a feeling once I own a Nexus device, I won't want to bother with "workarounds" or risky flashing. They seem very solid in the way of reliability after customization.
No more AT&T soon.
I was with AT&T since they were Cingular and I've always liked them. Ever since the bootloader lock bs I've switched to T-Mobile. Unfortunately I still have to use my AT&T GS4 but soon I'll just get a T-Mobile S4 or S5.
I'll be moving to the next nexus phone, hopefully it will be announced at the next conference. HTC comes unlocked if you get the developer edition. I read on the att HTC m8 forum is already been hacked. So you might be able to do an att upgrade and follow the instructions there.
I had the HTC inspire for a while. Till I got the s4. You could go with the international versions of the s5 and get more access. Or the gpe htc m8. But I too, am done with carrier locked phones.

Thanks to some swell guys and xda, we're able squeak by on the S4. I won't sit under the table and beg for sraps on the S5 and the same carrier -- if it stays locked down, that's a nonstarter!
The way I choose a phone and what carrier/plan I use has forever changed as long as the "crack down" continues. Call me old fashioned, but I like to own what I buy (like the other 99% of Samsung users) - a phone with no root and a locked bootloader is never yours!
You got another one here sticking with the S4 for another year. Contracts up next year at the end of April, so I'm hoping S6 will be out by the time I upgrade.

I don't see the S4 bootloader getting unlocked anytime soon, by the time it does get unlocked, everyone would probably be moving onto the S7.
I love my s4 but I am with you on this one. By the time I am eligible to get a new phone project Ara should be commercially available so I will check that out (if I can). Otherwise it will be any phone that has an sd card slot, and does not have any stupid fingerprint reader.

Even with safestrap a locked phone is still locked....and development has suffered. On Wednesday the Nexus 6 comes out and it will have an unlocked bootloader....just have to pay full price most likely. I know I could have done this with the Samsung Dev edition but I won't give Samsung more money for a dev phone when I have already bought one, what bull ****. I know it isn't Samsung's fault but I don't give a ****, It's your phone, they didn't lock it you did! They told you to and you did. You could have said no. So you bought a non-dev device, and are upset because it's locked? And Motorola has been bootloader locking their phones for a long time too, guess they shouldn't have either. Unless you buy a specifically unlocked version, I suspect it'll be the same story on the Nexus as the S5, Carrier locked.

Motorola started locking bootloaders, years ago and anyone that had an X2 (like myself) will look twice at buying a Motorola product. I'm happy with my S5, great battery and great performance.

I'm not buying it from a carrier it's supposed to be unlocked. I'm buying it directly from the play store tomorrow. I don't think Google will lock their phone. Verizon won't have a ****ing chance to lock it as they won't have no ****ing part in the sale.
They made it to where ONE phone will work on all major networks in America out of the box. I'm glad so I don't need Verizon to OK it or anything. Plug in my sim and go hard.

lol. that's incorrect. The phone has all of Verizon's bands build in. Verizon don't own the bands it's an open standard. do your homework better. I can take a sprint phone and put it on Verizon it doesn't matter at all. Just so happenes Google made this phone to include all bands and networks in the USA. So what exactly have to read that points to no? How about reading the actual phone description on google play.

Very sorry for how i came across. I will let you know if the bootloader is unlocked. As for it working on Verizon it absolutely will work out of the box with the correct sim

I'm just concerned about them activating it, with Verizon being CDMA and only using SIM's for LTE im afraid they wont activate it without being Verizon branded like they do with any phone. If they were GSM this wouldn't be an issue what-so-ever. Boot loader should be unlocked as in usual nexus fashion.

They do not have to activate it. Before the days of sim cards in cdma phones they did have activate it. Now the sim does.

Hello NOT being waterproof (water resistant), Hello anyone can install a themer, Hello every other phone gets updates later than the Nexus.
I'm not saying your points aren't valid, they're just not going to make me switch!
I can't wait to get my nexus 6. Of course the bootloader will be unlocked. It is a nexus device. It is meant for developers. If you want custom roms, a nexus device is the best way to go. I loved my galaxy nexus and then switched to the s3 and now the s5. They are great phones but I want the flexibility of the nexus 6. Also have you seen the specs for this nexus? Top notch stuff finally in a nexus phone. In all it comes down to preference but I'm selling my s5 and getting the nexus 6.

I'm coming from a LG G3 were the mods were in overwhelming favor and support for the T-mobile version.
Just want to know if the carrier is going to matter if I'm someone interested in trying out roms
T-mobile usually don't lock down the bootloader. AT&T and Version both will be so locked down it will be months if at all before their variants will be mod-able.
Talking about US models? Sprint and T-Mobile bc they don't lock the bootloaders.
What would you personally prefer over T-mobile or Sprint?

I'm on a family plan, so it's not what I prefer, it's my parents haha. Sprint coverage sucks, BUT they're customer service is good, plus they don't lock the bootloaders. I've had Sprint since it was Nextel lol (15+yrs).
Related question, if I have a Verizon plan, can I buy a Sprint S6, easily unlock the sim-restriction (if there is one) and use my verizon SIM card?
With this chip it will be hard pressed for any to really be mod friendly

Didn't matter in the end. Sprint and Tmo wouldnt let me buy full-retail price of the phone without a plan
My only wish is that the S6 gets multirom (I don't know the reason why S5 didn't get it). It's a lifesaver.
Xposed will eventually be available, and root enables a number of other tweaks... but multirom. That's where I put my "prayers".

Depending on the model is depending on if the bootloader will get unlocked. Without that multirom is not an option.

Well... T-Mobile and Sprint vs come with unlocked bootloaders, right? And I believe the international vs will come the same way... that's how some people already got root in their S6, right?
With that, the first thing needed is a custom recovery and the patched kernel... that's where it might get tricky, for the exynos processor. If I'm not jumping to conclusions.
Does anyone know about the Canadian versions and their bootloaders?

Sometimes they do yes but no promises. It really all depends. As for recovery that will be up to the very few that still work on this chipset. Many of the bigger developers have walked away from Samsung because of their lies about this chip and the issues it causes with anything but touch wiz roms.
i had the s4 rooted and unlocked and custom rom. Im not a daily tweeker. just like to rock on something that works for me. so i just updated to s6 edge + wow really??? never would have assumed that verizon locked this down. im instantly pissed and want to dump the s6 and verizon. unfortunately verizon has the only and best coverage for my house.
guess i should have checked the forum to get the info on this phone b4 purchasing. so is the verizon policy to prevent root/unlock of all their phones? if not, what phones would be a good verizon alternative which can be rooted and unlocked? i purchased from costco and believe i can return.

I'm sure there's a phone mechanic somewhere in your town. You can ask them to carrier unlock your phone.
Or you can use this website http://TheUnlockingCompany.com which has good reputation but I never used it.
Note that all methods I mentioned are paid.
Definitely Nexus or possibly moto phones, other than that not sure about rooting Verizon phones.

After many live chat sessions and escalations, I have pried bootloader information from Samsung, here are the facts:
(This is from the u.s. live chat)
"If you purchase the Unlocked phone from samsung , Bootloader will be unlocked already on phone"

We went through this BS with the note 7 last year.
Sammy is full of crap to put it blunty, the CSRs dont have accurate information.
I would love this to be true and I wont be buying one if its not but trust me...dont take what they say as being even remotely accurate

Would love that to be true, mind you I will most likely go for the exynos version anyway. I had both a snapdragon AND a exynos note 7 and the exynos killed it pretty much in every way.

It's not accurate. The CSR's don't know the difference between an unlocked bootloader and an unlocked sim. They also don't know the difference between a telephone and a piece of toast. OK, I don't know how many times I will have to clarify this.
The car live chat was turned into a ticket. Which has higher priority and CSR level than live chat. Then that was escalated to a software development engineer rep. I'm pretty sure this will be accurate, probably only the non QCOM cores tho

I don't care if Oh-Hyun Kwon told you that the bootloader would be unlocked lol It won't. You probably miss-spoke or they miss-understood you and thought you were talking about the sim. The bootloader will not be able to be unlocked and I can guarantee you of this. Samsung is copying Apples model of device security and there is no way they would allow you to unlock the bootloader. And if you keep it up, I will refresh this thread once a week after the phone is launched to remind you of how wrong you were lol

Okay so the phone will be released without Samsung pay then. Is this what you're saying? Samsung pay is immediately disabled as soon as the bootloader is unlocked. So what you're saying is that the phone will be released without Samsung pay. Does this sound logical to you?

I don't enjoy being attacked on a development forum. Just choose to believe it or not, no need to share your opinion multiple times. This is some INFORMATION, the way I got it. It is not my opinion, it is just here. Take it or leave it buddy.
My guess is it will be the same model as the Note 7 where the international versions can be unlocked but the US/Canada Snapdragons cannot outside of an exploit like the one that we used early in on the Note us before it was patched. Unlocking the bootloader will kill Pay of course but a lot of people don't care, Keep in mind that locked bootloaders are prohibited in some countries like Singapore.

Pretty much carriers request, but usually t-mobile vibrants the bootloader could be unlocked rather easily.

Im with this guy. Bootloader wont be unlock on our snapdragon version. This was already the case with gs7 and note 7. Samsung will say anything on our favor for people to buy their phone. The truth is that 95% of the people dont care about bootloader or root. So having a lock bootloader and promote security is more valuable in their favor. Most probably dont even kmow what a sg 835 id. Only thing most people care. How the screen looks, if it is fast, good battery life and camera.
The Tmo phones were not easily unlocked, they were the same as the rest of the snapdragons with the Note 7 and I think more of the same can be expected. Samsung used to make multiple variants of their snapdragons with and without locked bootloaders but reportedly will not do so again, all will be locked going forward since most go to the North American market where the carriers request it. I would be very hesitant to order a snapdragon S8 if I wanted an unlocked bootloader until it was proven it can be unlocked. It can often take months or years to get into bootloaders these days and some are never unlocked. Those who demand root will want the international not just for the unlocked bootloader but also because that will be where nearly all the effort in development happens.

They were never unlocked as far as I know...neither was the note not that it was out for long enough to get that far lol.
Root was achieved via leaked engineering firmware. No twrp recovery either just root.

Yeah, I had an international. They actually patched the snapdragon phone after the first recall that prevented the installation of the leaked engineering firmware. Meanwhile over in international land we were flashing away for our brief ownership. I'm actually only here because I think we'll get some idea of what to expect with the Note 8 from this phone. That's probably going to be my next buy unless a surprise phone hits. Going back to the topic the news was over on the Note 7 forum that the snapdragon would no longer be coming with unlocked bootloader at any carrier or point of retail. Flashers should be wary of getting the snapdragon, unless something changed it won't be unlocked.

Yep....i had a snapdragon launch day then a week later got a exynos.
Then with all the recall BS stupid me took it back....realized how stupid that was then managed to snag another snapdragon thanks to a friend. Was happily using that until those Aholes at sammy killed the note 7 on all Canadian networks in Dec.
Ill likely trade it in on an S8 then sell it and buy a Exynos version lol.
I keep my eyes peeled for exynos note 7s still...not even sure if one would work in canada now but if it did Id buy it LOL
