[Q] Bought used phone, won't activate with new sim from verizon - Verizon HTC One (M8)

Hey M8 crew!
New to the M8, just bought the phone from swappa. Apparently it has root/s-off/some lollipop build installed on it. Clean ESN.
Took it into verizon to activate it on my line, but the sim doesn't appear to activate as they expect. It detects that it was inserted, says to reboot, after reboot still says no service, and never performs any activation. Verizon rep was claiming that the rom was causing the failures, and it does appear to likely be software related if it is never launching the activation. VZW tech support was no help other than saying it may take up to 12 hours to activate the sim (bs meter going off). Spent 2 hours in the store trying to get it to activate, saying everything was fine on their end. Tried a couple sims in store to rule out a bad sim. Have even tried the tape on the sim trick to see if that might have something to do with it.
Has anyone ever seen / heard of this sort of situation before and have any idea of how to fix it?
Would a stock RUU flash help out in anyway?
Is it because it is not a verizon rom that the activation is not happening? Would I somehow be able to use a different verizon phone to activate the sim, then put it in my phone and have service start working?
Any ideas?

If the phone was used on another carrier it might be stuck in a non lte/CDMA mode. Flash stock vzw ruu. Do a factory reset. Go into mobile settings and make sure it's set to global. Then see if default network is set to vzw. Then check provisioning.

That did it. Thanks!

phone HATES my SIM CARD "unregistured sim"

My phone HATES my SIM CARD, First off i rooted my phone, its fully unlocked and has been just fine for over a month. I'm using FIDO but its an unlocked Rogers phone. (SGH-I727R model) and original FW and everything. made a couple of phone calls in the morning and the when i got home i noticed that my phone displayed "unregistured SIM" so i tried reloading sim card, reboot and so on over and over again. and it didnt work. so put the sim card in my 4year old phone, and it worked.
try calling fido aswell as rogers.. they said, sim card might be old and there is a conflict with the NEW phone. so i went to futureshop talked with the dude got the NEW sim card and tested it out with no success. again tried it with old phone, WORKS..
now you think maybe the phone might be locked somehow... NOPE. i even tried dude's sim card and he is on another network. (NOT rogers or fido) WORKED with his sim, proof my phone is totally unlocked to any carrier.
NEW SIM Card Doesnt work with my phone but worked perfectly with buddies SIM CARD on another carrier?!?!... lol
and now it shows "no service"
PLEASE HELP.
Update
i have just formatted, cleared cache and factory reset and it still says the same ****. no service... anyone help? i'm dead in the water here..
I had the same problem, I had to switch carriers then my phone started working properly, Honestly I think its the company...
Update
well, it looks like i hit rock bottom. i even installed the new ics rom and its still doesn't take my SIM card. I'm pissed. i need to dump this phone and get a working one. I can't switch over to rogers, I hate them. and when i go on vacation this phone will be a brick if i cant insert everyone elses sim cards around the world.
and i dont think its the company's fault. i have a feeling its because its rooted or something along those lines.
maybe i will wait for the new galaxy sIII and dump this ****. $$560 wasted. i feel soo stupid for getting this phone.
hi,
What have you used to unlock sgh-i727? I have one and need to unlock it so can switch to other provider then ATT.
when i bought the phone it came unlocked. you must goto a website and give them your imei # that is on your phone. and they will sned you a unlock code upto 2 hours later.. DONT try and guess the code. and you will have to pay a fee but it will be minimal. $3-10
Final UPDATE, i went to rogers and got the phone on a contract for $50 and now i think i will give this to my mother to use for pics and ****. i have not a clue what to do with this thing.
And now it works
How reliable is that, i went out and bought a second phone from rogers and after a couple of days of my old phone not working with any sim card, Now it works with both rogers and Fido. Now i am stuck in a 3yr contract and have 2 of these phones. anyways i will try and get rid of my stupid contract. its only been a couple of days and "buyers remorse" law states that you can get out of any contract within 15 days of when the contract was signed.
Same Here
Strange - I had the EXACT same thing happen to me as well. Funny thing is it happened the same day as your first post about this issue on Jan. 25. I am on FIDO as well and had a working, unlocked i727R I bought off eBay from Basatne Electronics.
It was unrooted and working perfectly for a month and a half. All of a sudden I got ‘no service’ and sometimes ‘unregistered sim’ when I rebooted. I tried 6 different sim cards from FIDO and Rogers that worked on other phones and same thing. I cleared cache and did a reset. Same thing. I brought it to FIDO and Rogers and tried their demo sim cards in it. Same thing.
Finally I called Samsung to sent it back to them for ‘repair’. They sent me a UPS label and I sent it to Service Absolut, Samsung’s repair subcontractor in Montreal. It was there for over a week now. Their communication is terrible – it just says ‘open’ or ‘close’ on Samsung’s tracking website, so I called Absolut themselves yesterday asking for the status/tracking number. They said they were going to ship it yesterday even though my repair ticket online said ‘close’ since last wednesday.
I find this really strange, especially since your phone seems to have done the same thing as mine right around the same time. I figure it was Rogers/Fido that messed up their network somehow. Two working Rogers sims didn’t work in it either. My sim card was working on my old blackberry still. My IMEI didn’t appear in any blocked IMEI lists I looked up.
I just got my phone back today 10 minutes ago and it works again. It says 'full software upgrade and reset' on the repair list I got back, although I didn't mod my phone in the first place. At least I had my backup blackberry. Still pisses me off – I spent hours trying to figure out what was wrong with it and I wiped all my apps when I did a reset, so I’ll have to load them all up again and set up my phone.
Just weird.
And Again...
Well, it seems it just happened again.
After a month and a week or two of working perfectly (same length of time as last time), my i727R now says 'No Service' again for some reason on FIDO network and won't connect to anything except through Wifi.
I didn't install any new software or change any settings when it happened.
It was working one minute, put it in my pocket and a couple minutes later it says 'No Service', even though I have always had service before in the area I am in right now.
Does anyone have a clue what can be causing this?
Network, Software (some kind of timer somewhere that would shut off connection), Malware?
This is driving me nuts - I don't want to have to send it back to Samsung again.
Last time Samsung said they reflashed the software when I sent it back.
I don't know why I would need to do that since it was working just fine and I wasn't messing around with any settings before it started saying 'No Service' - same thing happened last time.

[Q] Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3-SCH-I535-Unlocking

I am by far no where near the caliber of technology that lie within this web site, however, I am simply trying to get some direction regarding my S3.
I purchased it from Verizon-2 yrs ago, contract expired 7/8/13; did not renew. I went with Consumer Cellular (more fitting for the older generation) but my S3 WON'T WORK ON THEIR NETWORK!
I have spent the last 3 weeks doing research on this phone to see if it can be 'unlocked' to work with a another carrier. The phone is like brand new and I don't want to get rid of it, I'd prefer to use it with the new carrier.
Is there anyone who can give me some direction to this issue? Can the phone infact be "unlocked' to work with Consumer, it has the Verizon SIM card in it, I was able to root it, successfully, now if I can just get it unlocked. Had to purchase another phone so that I would not be without phone service while I work on trying to get this one unlocked.
I've been told it can't because Verizon is a CDMA carrier and Consumer is a GSM..if this in fact true than I've no options but to sell the phone.
I do have "Preferred Network Mode' and it gives me the following options, Global, LTE/CDMA & GSM/UMTS.
Any help, directions or information would be greatly appreciated. With my thanks to all those who have taken the time to read this post.

How did you get this phone 2 years ago? It barely came out a little more than a year ago.
Next, you can unlock it, but only if you pay for the full retail for the phone and then contact Verizon about what you want to do and then get an unlock code. After that, you're going to need a SIM card from Consumer Cellular.
There shouldn't be a problem with radio frequencies since the Verizon GS3 is a global phone. So the SIM card should work after you get it set up.
If I'm wrong in some aspect, someone feel free to correct me.

In regards to Unlocking the phone, the phone is unlocked out of the box, you just pop in your sim and select GSM mode! you have to set the APN for DATA yourself tho!

Hi:
I do not recall the date of purchase but know that when I purchased it I had to sign for a 2 yr contract with Verizon..that contract was up July 8,2013.
That is not important, what is important is to find out if in fact the phone can be unlocked, VERIZON swears it is unlocked so they are not going to be of any use to me to get their help. It is up to me to find someone who can unlock this phone via a cable. The code places I have contacted can't come up with a code, they have instructed me that it needs to be done with a cable.
As I stated, I am simply trying to get the phone unlocked to use on Consumer Celluar, of which I am already a memeber and have the SIM card activated on another SAMSUNG phone of which I had to buy.
I do not have to buy the phone outright, as the phone is paid for, thus the 2 yr contract. the phone is mine, but as long as it is in the state it is now, I can only use it on VERIZON.
The I535 has a sim card in it from Verizon, when I take out the Verizon SIM card and put in the Consumer SIM card I get the message, "this is a non verizon SIM card.
I am researching this everyday to find out if IT CAN BE UNLOCKED, AND #2 WHO CAN I GET TO UNLOCK IT? Verizon went so far as to tell me that all the person needs is a USB cable and PC...how true this is, I don't know.
Thank You

Verizon is right by saying its unlocked, and thats the most anyone can help you, if you are going to try unlocking the phone by cable, you might as well throw money down the drain! and 2 you need to update to the MF1 software! as MB1 and MD3 would tell you its non verizon sim card, but even on that update if you put the phone in GSM mode in Network settings the phone should work fine for calling and texting!
having the same issue, if you find out anything will you please let me know how to do this too. i would greatly appriciate it
SIM
Did you get the free Consumer Cellular SIM yet? Your post said you have rooted and have the Verizon SIM, and you can't get on CC network without their SIM card.
The phone is already "unlocked" for global/GSM use with the JB update, so you should be able to just pop in a SIM card from CC and change settings (they should provide you with this info).
A lot of ppl are saying the Verizon GS3 is already unlocked, but when i pop in my metro pcs sim card and switch network to cdma, nothing happens. What would I have to do to make it work with this metro carrier?
No Data, No Voice, No SMS
Hi. Im also having the same issue. I have a Verizon GS3 that was originally running 4.0.4, VRALHE. I rooted, updated the baseband to MF1, and installed RLS16 of Hyperdrive, so I now am on 4.1.2. I have the option to go GSM or Global, but when I put in my MetroPCS sim, I get nothing. It prompts me for Global, but I cant make calls or send sms. I also put in the APN and no data as well. Anyone know whatbI should do next? I have an IMEI, it doesnt appear to be lost, and I have tried the phone info app, as well as trying to go through the secret menu, the network lock menu is blank.
Hey, I got the same problem, and considering how it's been a while since the last post I wonder if there is any new news on this front. Thanx!
P.s: It came preinstalled with 4.3 stock, not rooted yet. I have the option to instal 4.4.2 via Kies {PDA:NE1 / PHONE:NE1 / CSC:NE1 (VZW)}.
Update here:
I digged into some settings and found that switching it into either Global or GSM seems to make the phone capable of voice calls.
Idk about 3G, I did manually type in the APN settings, but I never use anything other than wifi because internet here is expensive unless you go with one of their plans.
So if you haven't tried it, on 4.3 go to settings, under wireless and networks select 'More Settings', Mobile Networks, Network Mode.
Worked for me, although I still get "Non-Verizon SIM" in the notifications bar and it looks like my signal is a bit weaker than before. But still works.
guys you are wrong
guys there is no way metropcs, Boost mobile or sprint networks Work cause these are CDMA carriers and verizon and the other CDMA Carriers has a different activation way on Verizon smartphones the GSM module(gsm networks as well) come unlocked for foreigner carriers even the GSM US carriers(AT&T or TMOBILE) sometimes doesnt work hope that info help

[Q] StraightTalk No Network Available... Any suggestions

Yesterday, I received a new StraightTalk MicroSIM (ATT compatible) for my new Nexus 5. I have been using a StraightTalk T-Mobile compatible one that I used in my old phone. I activated the new SIM, using the automated phone system. This morning I saw that my phone still had no service. That is, zero bars, I cannot make calls or text. Of course data doesn't work either. I logged into my account and it said that the transfer to the new SIM is complete. So I called StraightTalk and was transferred 5 times to people who did the same trouble shooting with me every time. Their trouble shooting: power off your phone, take out your SIM and then start it back up. Then they said they need to send me a new SIM card.... Here is my issue, I feel like they don't know what they are doing so their answer is just to send me another SIM.
My question: Did anyone else have this experience or ideas on getting the phone to work? I've tried different APNs with no different results.
Okay, this is odd. I figured, since I won't have phone service for a while, I would root my phone. After I rooted my phone, everything works. I can make calls and data works. Not sure what changed but when the device was rooted, it also did a factory reset. After 50 minutes of crappy customer service, I think I'll just take the new SIM card they are sending.
Takes a while for them to activate it sometimes. I was with customer services for 2 hours trying to activate my Sim card because it wouldn't let me online.
Their customer service, signal penetration might suck, but it's way cheaper, which I'm good with.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
I wonder if maybe that is what happened but I think it probably had to do with the factory reset.
I do want to post one final thing since everything has played out today... On the phone I asked them to expedite the package since this is my work phone and ONLY phone. Today, FedEx delivered a new SIM card... it was the card only. No other packaging or information. It was the wrong SIM... I needed a micro and they sent a regular SIM... but at least they tried. After receiving the SIM today, I don't feel so bad about the situation. Things may have been different if my phone didn't miraculously start working. I would have had to cut down the regular sized SIM... to find out if it is an ATT or Tmobile version... it's probably the Tmobile versions, since I ordered the ATT version. Thats how things go... have a good day!
READ THE NEXT POST FOR CONTINUED ISSUES
*** I'm going to keep posting my experience, in case anyone else can find the information useful. ***
My service should have Auto-Refilled today. However, when I went to make a call, I found out my service was deactivated. I thought maybe Auto-Refill was disabled when I transferred to the new microSIM. Unfortunately, after spending another 45 minutes on the phone with customer service, I found out that they activated the replacement SIM that they sent me... the one that doesn't fit my phone and appears to be a Tmobile SIM. So, instead of just re-activating the microSIM that was working yesterday, they have to send me another one. I confirmed with them that they will be sending an AT&T compatible microSIM. We will see what I receive.

Placed my VZW sim in T-Mobile iPhone despite replacing sim still don't get 4G data

So I don't know what I was thinking, but last week while on the T-Mobile test run I tried to use the T-Mobile iPhone sim in my m8. I also tried using the VZW sim in the T-Mobile iPhone. Nothing worked. This isn't the problem.
After putting the VZW sim back in my m8, I no longer got 4G and my data connection kept dropping. This Sunday I spend 2 hours at the Verizon store trying to get them to resolve the issue. The idiot at the Verizon store tried to resolve the issue for over an hour using the original sim. After me begging him to stop wasting time and just replace the sim, the issue is still not resolved.
When he originally checked my phone in the database it was coming up as something like "Unknown device" which I'm assuming was caused by placing my sim in the T-Mobile iPhone. After replacing the sim, the IMEI and everything else seemed to be matching according to the guys at Verizon, but I still don't have 4G and data keeps dropping..
Any ideas?
I'm running a GPE rom so I'm wondering if I have to go back to stock to resolve this issue...
Probably need to flash stock recovery and do a factory reset from it. Might not need to fully flash back.
I had this same issue. I would love to fix it but I moved to a OnePlus One on T-Mo. I'd love to get this resolved though.

SM-G970U Refuses to Work on Carrier Network

So, I have an S10e (SM-G970U) that was bought from Verizon a while back. The phone was set up on a Verizon post-paid plan, but was later switched to prepaid. The phone worked fine for months, but about a week ago, the phone randomly stopped making and receiving calls, texts, and the ability to use mobile data. It was taken to Verizon, and they tried "all they could" in their words, which included a new SIM card, resetting network settings, and eventually a factory reset from settings. Nothing seemed to work, and they gave up, claiming it "seemed like a bad antenna." They did call their "tech support" who claimed the most recent Android 11 update supposedly caused an issue with mobile network connection with the Verizon S10e devices, which I haven't heard of, but didn't know. He claimed a reset would fix it.
Since none of that fixed it, it was taken to a shop to be inspected. They claim the phone has nothing wrong with it. So, that, in theory, rules hardware issues out. Their only claim was that when an AT&T SIM was inserted, it was able to connect to the network, but never tried to make any calls due to the SIM not being activated. I assume this is due to someone trying to "help" inserting an activated AT&T SIM into the slot when testing, which I assume ended up installing the carrier branded version of the firmware. They gave a couple possible reasons, but neither seemed to make sense.
Since it had the AT&T bloatware and was working with only AT&T SIMs, I decided to flash both the VZW G970U firmware (the earliest version I could to ensure the supposed "issue" from Verizon support wasn't a problem) and the G970U1 firmware. Both firmware flashes have seemed to have done nothing, as the phone is still having the issue. Most times, it will connect to the Verizon network, but the signal seems to rise and fall quickly (like the bars going from 5 to 1 to 3).. Still no calls, texts, or data, though. I have no idea what's going on, at this point, honestly. Any ideas?

If the people it was taken to were competent and did their jobs correctly (one of the best around, according to reviews and carrier recommendation), their diagnostic results show no hardware damage to the phone. Then again, their explanation for the problem was that it had been locked to ATT network (a Verizon bought phone that never had any affiliation with another carrier, aside from Verizon and a month-long stint with Straight Talk). Some idiot she knows that used to work for a Verizon retailer popped his ATT SIM in there, and it flashed ATT firmware.. Their POSSIBLE solution was to try and have it network unlocked from ATT. As we know, though, the IMEI obviously did not change, and the process of confirming the identifier is done on the mobile network level. Therefore, flashing a different carrier's firmware won't do much (permanently), aside from changing the boot screen and bloatware apps. We even tried to explain to the guy that the ATT SIM had never been popped in until after the problem began, as there was no reason to beforehand. I also mentioned I had flashed firmware multiple times before I ever came to him, to no avail. I should've pushed harder, but I had been out all day, frustrated and ready to go home.
It's been over a month since that issue began, and I haven't thought much of it lately.. We've since found her a new phone (and stowed the other one in a drawer). Those guys did blurt some moronic statements.. In hindsight, I'm not too sure I should trust their judgement after hearing what I did. Maybe it was an antenna issue or otherwise hardware, but I sort of assumed if anyone can happen to keep a repair shop open, they'd at least be able to complete the simple tasks fairly easy. I don't know. I'm not paying another repair shop to find out, though.
I had a very similar problem where my phone would just randomly lose all connection for about a minute, then it would reconnect I would start doing whatever I was and it would do it again and this one on for months. I took it to AT&t and they told me to replace the SIM which I did and it didn't work. after a couple updates it fixed itself.
