cannot get 3g to work

hey guys,
for over two months now, my phones does not want to connect to the 3g, even in places where it used to (ie, my house). I have tried using the service menu, different apps, the network options, and have looked high and low but all the threads I've found end without an answer.
Right now i have,
2.2
Baseband: I896UXJL1
cognition 3.04
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What happens if you go back to stock?

hmm good questions, last week when i went into 2.1 to update cognition it was on. After I installed cognition it was on for 3-4 days, but then over night it switched by it self and I have not been able to get it back

Have any other 3G att phones, its a long shot but once I had a similar issue, put my sim in another phone left it on for a few min then put it back in my captivate and everything worked fine

If your phone has the extended power menu (hold power for options) there is a data network mode option, make sure it is activated. You may have hit it by accident.

I can try that, but do you know if its going to stay on 3g?
When I reboot I get 3g temporally but it goes away.
and yes data is activated
edit: So i kept trying to do what you guys said, but still nothing. FYI, edge is really slow

What modem are you using? Have you tried flashing a different one?
Have you tried other roms?
I would consider going back to stock (sucks I know) for a few days and if it continues to happen, take it into att and see about a new sim card or a replacement. If it doesn't happen again, try a different rom.

Try going into settings - wireless and network - mobile networks - Access point names - Click the menu button - Reset Defaults.
Had a co-worker running stock and his 3G would not come on anymore I had him do this and has been working ok ever since.

Data Problem, What Should I Do?

I just started having this issue, i can't connect to any data at all, i have tried battery pulls, using restart connection, running different roms, using restores where everything was working, doing a full wipe and then installing a new rom, but still no luck. Should i try just a factory restore? i also read that taking out the battery, then take out the sim card, booting the phone up with out the sim card in, getting errors and then shut it off and then put the sim card back in works, but im not sure which of those to try, any advice?

when that happened to me i did a factory reset and it worked afterward

Check around first, see if Verizon is having problems in your area. I know recently places have been popping up with sporadic outages.

But isn't installing a rom and wiping the data and cache the same as a factory restore?

I had this happen to me earlier this week. When I called Verizon support they told me that towers were down in my area, they told me the same when I called back the next day. Meanwhile, others who own the TB seemed to be having no issues. Finally I took my phone into a Verizon store and they are shipping me a replacement phone. They would not swap my phone in the store since I was a whopping 4 days beyond the 14 day return window...but, I digress.
The one workaround that I found in the meantime is to switch your modem settings. Dial ##778, select Edit Mode, enter 000000 as the password and select Modem Settings. Select Rev. A and choose Enable. Press your menu button and select Commit Changes. Your phone will reboot and you can use the LTE On/Off App (or just dial *#*#4636#*#* and choose Phone information) and switch the radio to CDMA Auto (PRL). That enabled me to have 3G data, though it seems extremely slow relative to 3G on my OG Droid. But, in a pinch it seems to work.

One additional bit of advice, in case you are running a custom ROM. I was running Virus ROM and ##778 would crash whenever I tried to run it. In order to swap the modem settings, I had to flash back to stock and make the updates, then flash back to Virus. I don't know if this is specific to Virus, but just an FYI.

Just tried on das bamf and worked fine (##778) must just be virus.

Thanks, that got my 3G working, will i still have 4G with it on that setting? or do i need to switch it back to use 4G or do i get the Lte on/off app?

You won't get 4G on that setting, it turns the 4G radio off entirely. You would need to switch back to the CDMA + LTE/EvDo auto or LTE mode settings to get 4G. Ultimately, my issue ended up being a defective phone. You can try to wait it out and see if you get 4G back later, but you may just have a faulty device.
If that is the case, just remember to follow the instructions that jcase posted in the development forum to get your phone back to stock with s-on before taking it into a Verizon store. If you bring a rooted device in, I suspect they aren't going to honor any sort of warranty.

My phone had this problem too... turns out when I went into a 4g area the mobile network box got unchecked in the wireless & network settings.

I use the "verify with multiple devices method". I am tired of the standard VZW "towers are down in your area" bs answer.
If another tb, xoom, and bb have service and my tb doesn't, that tells me something is wrong.
I have a feeling that there is something seriously wrong with the network (implementation or backend hardware) that is causing this with 4G devices. Either that or the tb is to blame entirely for Verizon's 4G issues...... /rantoff..... LOL

Was having issues earlier today with 4G. The connection and signal were good, but no data would download. The white up arrow would light up, but the down arrow never would. It was like that for about 4 hours. It's working great now and speeds are disgustingly fast.. maybe VZ doing some maintenance?
EDIT: THis is in San Diego.

Factory Reset from bootloader worked for me. I had the exact same problem. Tried everything that was suggested, but no data still. Only enabling Rev. A worked.

Thanks for the help, the problem I'm having now is I got 3g but I can't get 4G back, I have tried to switch my settings back to get 4G using LTE on/off and by dialing the number, and I have had no luck, in those menus it tells me service type LTE but it is disconnected, and I get no data or 4G symbol in the status bar, so I'm confused if I maybe messed up a setting or what, so should I just try a factory restore via the bootloader and see if that works? Any other suggestions ?

I would try the factory reset from bootloader, but I was on the stock ROM when I did it. So I don't know if that would matter or not.

Just to reiterate, my 4G never came back. The phone was just broken. It sounds suspiciously like you are having the same issue. Maybe there is a manufacturing defect that makes this issue more prevalent with this phone right now? If you are in the 14 day return period, set your modem and radio settings back and get into the store ASAP to swap the phone out. Otherwise, call customer service and have them replace the phone. They will overnight you a new phone if you complain enough.

Ok I was looking through my modem settings after dialing ##778 and I had changed the rev a. Setting to enable, that got my 3g working, but what is eHRPD is that would I should have it on too have 3g/4g? But everytime I have tried setting it to that I get no data so is that the setting that is messed up?

Just picked up my Nexus 5 and stuck my 3 sim card in it.
I have no internet unless I connect to my wifi. I've checked the APN settings and compared them to what the internet says they should be and found small minor differences so tried to edit it.
When I edited and selected Save, the APN disappeared. I then tried creating one but again when I pressed Save, it vanished.
Help!

I had a similar problem with mine. Did a full wipe of the phone and started
again from scratch and this has sorted the problem for me.

I'm on 3. Put my sim in, turned the phone on and it's been fine. I can do a screen shot of the apn settings if you like?

Unusual I guess, mine worked out the box. Let us know if the wipe works

When I got it, I switched it on, unlocked bootloader and installed CWM. It didn't boot and for some reason wouldn't wipe through CWM so I downloaded the factory images and re-flashed the phone.
I then entered my details and got the no internet problem. I have done a wipe using the settings menu and now internet works

Hmmm... odd. I just took the 3sim from my SGS3 and put it in the N5 and it just worked.

Well spoke too soon, its not working again. Whenever I go into Mobile network settings, Network mode says Change the network operating mode and if I click it neither 2G, 3G or 4G is selected. Something strange going on.

Mine worked first time, whats your APN settings? if you post them i'll check them against mine

I've just been reading the TWRP thread and it would appear that a few people are having issues once they have installed that on their phone. I've tried re-flashing, wiping, but still not working. Might have to send it back

You could be right. I originally had TWRP but I had a number of problems. I flashed CWM, did everything i needed to and once i was up and running I flashed TWRP back (the added functionality I do like). Since then its been okay. But yes, a number of formats.
Try having CWM?

Now back to stock recovery and tried re-flashing stock image and full wipe and still got no mobile data. Gutted but looks like its going back.
Just tried my o2 sim in which I only get 2G signal with in my house and it works on mobile data so appears to be only a problem connecting to 3G

I'm having the exact same problem..I'm on three too, sometimes I get 3G just for a couple of seconds, but then it vanishes? I don't think it's the phone though since I do get signal when outside the house. I think it has something to do with the signal booster I have?

Well there's a coincidence, I have a Home Signal Box too as get zero signal in my house without one. I do get full mobile phone signal just no internet. I'm sure its something to do with APN settings which do seem to be slightly different to recommended settings but can't change them as when I do the APN vanishes and it won't let me add any either.

Same issue. On 3 with Home Signal Box. Data dies once I hop onto the box's connection.

I'm thinking to get a 3 sim on the one plan this weekend. How is the data speeds looking on the nexus 5. I just saw tesco is doing 4g which is reasonably cheaper than my current 02 even though it runs on their network but i must my 02 speeds are really terrible right now. Cheapest 02 4g deal is like 26 pound with 1gb data. Thats not even an option.

Nexus 5 NO Signal Strength

I have a Nexus 5 with Android version 4.4.2 baseband M8974A-1.0.25.0.23. However for some reason there is no Signal Strength on the phone. I flashed back to 4.4 and still NO Signal Strength.
Anyone have idea of why?

What carrier do you have? Have you tried putting the sim card in another phone?

I have a ATT sim but it can not make any call because Signal Strength is 0dBm

This happened to me once after flashing a zip file. A full wipe fixed it.

just did a full wipe in recovery mode and still 0dBm and 90ASU.

Well your radio is off. Try entering *#*#4636#*#* in the phone app. The Phone Information, then scroll down to where it says LTE/GSM auto (PRL) and the button below should say "Turn off radio". If your's says "Turn on radio", thats the problem.
BTW, use the quote button next time so I get notified when you reply to me.

Yes IMEI is there. Just seem like I can't turn radio on/off, which prevent me from changing LTE-GSM-CDMA etc...

Doing Airplane mode doesn't help?

Try flashing the factory image. I had a similar problem. I re flashed the factory cache.img and it fixed it for me, but I would re flash everything.

I also have the same problem. I feel that there is something wrong with N5 antenna. It shows 0 dBm at my home. My other phone with the same sim pickups 1-2 bars of signal.

Strange...my N5 is doing the same thing now. No signal at all. Hopefully this isn't some widespread issue.

Flashed both 4.4 and 4.4.2 too but nothing help.
I got 3 and both Nexus is working great just my have no radio signal. I hope I dont get a defected phone. Hope LG/Google see into this problem soon.

Hey man I had the exact same problem it just progressively kept getting worse and finally I couldnt get the signal to come back no matter what I did. I took the back panel off and cleaned everything and now my signal is solid as a rock. I reccomend you try it. Check Ifixit to see how to remove the back panel its pretty easy.

Nexus 5 no signal fix
NEXUS 5 NO SIGNAL FIX, I finally fixed my Nexus 5! I downgraded to 4.4.0. At first I had 4g LTE signal and then noticed that I would lose all signal the moment it jumped to GSM and the signal would not come back anymore. So I had to reflash 4.4 again and set the radio to LTE only! To set the radio to LTE only type *#*#4636#*#*. I also flashed different radio bands, now on KRT01B 0.15. (also cancelled all aplication updates in google store, don`t know if has anything to do with it)

Hi! Got the same issue, tried every possible solution, but none of them could make the radio work. Could you explain in more detail how you cleaned it up?

Also having a similar issue to this - interested in the method you used to clean it? I fear that its some hardware issue that was somehow triggered by my phone running out of battery completely. Weird thing is everything else appears to work fine.

Verizon Signal Issues - Help

I need some help here, weird Verizon signal issue. So I got my U11 on Thursday the 22nd of June. I tested out the stock rom, all working fine, signal working fine too. Then I unlocked the bootloader, put twrp on in system RO mode, put magisk on, then put viperU 1.0.0 on. Viper/magisk and everything was working perfectly, I still had signal, could make and receive calls, send and get texts, wifi was all good, everything was good until Friday afternoon. I think it had to do with me trying to install the ota 1.1.0 viperU, but my signal dropped, still had 4g but that was touch n go. I tried to reinstall the ota because as far as my settings said and knew, I was still on 1.0.0 and when it checked for updates it found 1.1.0 again. After that 4g would work for a moment at boot then die, and there was no signal for calls/texts, that has the signal bars full with a slash through them. I tried fresh installing viperU 1.0.0, no change. I tried every combo in the test/advanced settings, changing the preferred network mode and ims settings, turn the radio off and back on and it would see verizon and try to connect, sometimes seemingly getting signal and changing the signal bars and getting 4g, then losing both. The status msgs on the advanced settings page would go back and forth as far as registered on the network, so I went to verizon and tried to get a new sim, the new sim didn't change anything, BUT a weird thing that happened is when the vzw rep went to the back to get me a new sim and activate it my U11 got signal, both 4g and call/text and I even got a msg, then it died again a moment later. So next I tried completely restoring and relocked my bootloader and installed the 1.11.617.4 RUU for my OCNWHL using htc_fastboot which it did perfectly fine, but still no signal. The bootloader says relocked(L) and software status: modified. Shouldn't it say official again since I flashed the RUU? I have tried reseating the sim and rebooting multiple times too. Oh and one more thing I noticed, my WiFi is touch and go now too, it'll say connected but websites fail to load, apps fail to download, etc until I turn off and back on my phone WiFi. Any ideas guys/gals on how to get my phone connected again? I just want to be able to use my new U11! Thanks in advanced!

All I can say is a lot of people are having problems with Verizon, me being one of them. I've had the phone almost 2 weeks and still can't get it working. I've talked to HTC and Verizon so many times and they say it's being worked on.

same here. Spent a couple days with near constant contact with Verizon trying to figure out out. Got in touch with HTC and it seems it may be a firmware issue. I can verify with no doubt that it's not the sim though. I've put mine back in my old phone, it worked. I put my daughters in my new phone, it failed to work. I even got a new sim for mine, but no luck. Multiple ROMs, multiple RUUs, and multiple factory resets, and wipes. All we can do is waiter, and pester the hell out of HTC to get them to hurry up.

It's so stupid that they don't even do testing before putting it on the market.

If either Verizon or HTC would come up with a simple software update to enable CDMA and all LTE bands, that would solve everything. The problem seems to be that Neither is putting much priority on it.
BTW: Since the U11 works with Sprint, it has the CDMA and LTE bands built in. They're just not set up to fully work with Verizon yet.

My unit is going back for refund tomorrow. 4 hours of work trying to get it going and I'm done. HTC blames VZW, VZW says it's hardware. $650.00 paperweight. No thank you.
I'll reorder if this get straightened out. There are hundreds working just fine on VZW.
Seems to be just a few of these that wont stay connected.

I can verify with no doubt that it's not the sim though. I've put mine back in my old phone, it worked. I put my daughters in my new phone, it failed to work. I was starting to lean towards firmware today because of the wifi going in and out. Seems like to get an app to download from play I have to search it, start the download, turn off wifi, turn it back on and then it'll download, yet updates download just fine. Fandango app won't load movies or anything. Etc. So I'm wondering if it's the system or radio...

stock U11 no issues on VZW
I took my sim out of my VZW line to test it out on my U11. I did some speed tests before I took it out. I inserted the VZW sim into the U11 and it booted up with no issues. Received LTE and ran speed tests and they were similar to the other device. There was VoLTE available and it was stable but I didn't make any calls with it. So just sharing my experience with my stock, Unlocked U11. I put the Tmo sim back in but it's good to know it'll work. It seems like some are having issues from the get go and some are having issues after modifying?

That's what's so screwy about it. On mine, I get WiFi flawlessly, and I even get mobile data, in 4g even. I just can't talk, or text. Before that, I could text, but no data, and couldn't talk. It's got to do with the way it's using the radios being screwy. The hardware functions, I've had full connection before, it lasted about 2 hours, and sounded amazing even.

Short answer: Yes. I noticed mine stopped after installing a ROM on it, but it was not the first one (test driving to see which I liked on it best). Others have the issue even with it locked still. I think the ROM flashing was more a circumstance than the cause in cases like mine. I even RUU'd back to stock, did factory resets, and tried other SIMs. It also seems to be only Verizon, unless someone on another network wants to set me straight.

I remember an issue on Verizon and the M9 that after flashing a custom rom, you stood the chance of loosing VoLTE. It did not happen to everyone and did not happen all of the time. I flashed custom rom for months and then one day, boom, VoLTE gone. The only way to get it back was to get the phone replaced. RUU did not work to get it back. Sounds similar to what is going on now. So my question is has this problem affected anyone that has not unlocked the bootloader yet?
I just checked the M9 Verizon section and looks like they did find a fix without replacing the phone. But I think you need to be s-off. Interested if this could resolve any of these issues here.

If we get s-off we can probably safely flash roms without magisk n still have volte n even a more stable radio/system firmware, if dev's make it happen of course. Or am I wrong, I don't mind having magisk, I just want to be able to root n customize my phone with it still working as a phone n not a fancy calculator or wifi only device haha. I'm debating getting a replacement from HTC until the firmware stabilizes at least, then I'll mod some more. Cause mine was working perfectly fine until I tried to put viperu 1.1.0 Ota on it.

I just noticed that when I drag down and get the quick settings into view there's a note in the top left that says "the sim card is missing or not readable. Insert a sim card" and that doesn't go away even when the occasional notification that says "sim card inserted click here to finish setup" pops up.

Was fine for a couple days - now suddenly today only getting "roaming" service. Manually trying to connect to VZW fails and says my SIM isn't allowed access.

The full story is in the op of this thread, but it started about a day after I got the phone, started with only voice/text going out, then lte dropped too so now my phone is wifi only. R u on stock or have u unlocked ur bootloader?

Ah sorry, didnt notice you were OP. I have unlocked but was running stock OS with Magisk (no other mods, I just wanted root). Noticed that turning of VoLTE in phone settings killed connection, so I was able to toggle that off and on (+airplane mode in between) to usually resurrect connection. Now nothing is working. Going to do a full wipe now to see if it comes back.

No worries haha. My signal today is intermittent, I'll get bars but can't call because when I try 4g turns off. In the HTC test settings, when I have bars it sees Verizon network but not my phone number, where as when I don't have bars (bars with slash through them) it sees my number but not Verizon network. For u to see this menu type *#*#4636#*#* in the dialer. My VoLTE is activated in settings tho.

Factory wipe didn't help either. Doing RUU now. This is so ridiculous. Also I accidentally deleted my backup, oops. Le sigh. This thing will probably be going back. Sad. I was loving the phone.

Bruh - go in menu -> Phone Info -> Turn Off Radio
Select "LTE Only" Select "WCDMA/LTE"
Turn radio back on.
Fixed problem instantly!!! Thank you SO SO MUCH!
edit: MMS doesn't work, but SMS seems possibly ok? not sure.
edit 2: WCDMA/LTE is the magical answer. All seems working now.
