Just wondering if anyone has heard of a dedicated GPS Nav ROM for the Captivate? I was thinking of dusting off my old captivate and turning it into a GPS device for my motorcycle trips. Maybe someone has stripped a ROM to the bare essentials required for offline navigation?
Thanks...

not working on my imate SP5. Application starts, shows startup screen, apparently connects with GPS, and shuts down. Any ideas?
of course not, nobody on here knows how to fix anything! I've been looking all day for an answer as to why route 66 7 keeps telling me that there isn't enough memory to load the map and then shuts down, nobody knows. Plenty of threads from like 2006! but nobody knows! AHGHHHHHHHH!!!!! I probably won't get a decent answer for that anytime soon either. Good luck man! and sorry bout this.

You need to buy an SMARTPHONE map for your location
I was looking for GPS software myself a while ago. What I finally decided on was GPSDash (http://wimobi.com/gpsdash/overview.sph2.php?pid=sph2). What I liked was the ability to use custom maps, which are easily made with Google map downloader (for either satellite maps or street maps)
You have to register both to get full functionality and there's no navigation function, but it works well enough for dataloging and knowing exactly where you are.
Aside from that, I also recommend the Google Maps application for smartphones if you have a data plan. It ties with your GPS and, even if you don't have a GPS, gives you an approximate location based on cell tower triangulation.
One more site to mention is http://www.maps-gps-info.com/fgpfw.html. I stumbled across it looking for j2me apps for an old Nextel phone I have. There's lots of smartphone apps there, but I haven't tried most of them.
GPSVP is free too

Have you tried the Windows Live Search? It includes Maps, Driving Directions, From-To-Reverse Route, and many other little features. Maybe not as powerfull as the paid GPS softwares, but surely has got me out of trouble on the road many times. I can post you link if you care to see it, or just search for "Windows Live Search". Its a 700+ Cab. Good Luck
Hey everyone
I am wondering what your opinions on the best mapping/route software for Windows Mobile is at the moment.
I am currently using TomTom and are after what you guys use?
I use Tomtom on the road, and Memory-Map off the road.

Memory-map interested me, is this for on foot or something?
Yeah, I use memory map for hiking. Its basicly just a OS map on your screen, and it shows your position. However it also records your track, so you can look back at any point and see where you were at any time, and how fast you were going.
Also the pc half is very good for planning trips in advance, as you just click to place waypoints which you can then follow using either your pda or you handheld gps like my garmin etrex.
Memory Map is very good for walking/ moutain biking, the maps can be costly though as you purchase them in large areas at a time, as an alternative consider "Quo" it isn't as feature filled but does provide OS mapping on tiles for £0,99 each it also will run on PC and PDA, see http://www.mapyx.com/ - Mike
Hi All
Just a quick question what ROM do you recommend these days. I currently have the device on orange windows 6.1 its all ready to be flashed just wonder what ROM everyone is using. Just for the record I want to use the SAT NAV feature.
Regards
Mat
Redundant thread.
Please select a ROM from the plethora of choices that are offered.
If you mean GPS = SAT NAV then all the ROM's are capable of this. You simply need a GPS software like iGO, Tom Tom etc. or Google Maps which is a free software.
I suggest you read users opinions inside the specific ROM thread the ascertain the type the ROM that you want.
I have successfully flashed my first rom onto my new Fuze. My question is how to get the gps going for driving? I have these apps in the gps folder-
chartcross gps
htc gps tool
visual gpsce
quick gps
google maps
Don't know what I need to do here, seems all of these just run tests. Does anyone know of a free, easy to use app for driving? I am in the US. Please let me know via reply or pm.
Thanks again to everyone on the forum for all of the help!
i think you are looking for a navigation software, there is a number of them that you can install, from the professional, TomTom, Garmin, iGO, these are for money, and others are available that are (still) free, e.g. Navit and nav4all. google maps can help in the begining as it can give directions (no audio). and i still continue to use now to search for addresses of places to go to.
Thanks, I'll give Navit a try...
Do you have a favorite?
TomTom is currently the one
Why did you post this in general? although it does classify as a general GPS question, you probably would get more replies if you posted it in the Raphael Software forum.
My current favorite Navigation software is iGO8.
ALSO if you have a data plan, enable aGPS, it helps you get a GPS lock faster and keep your quickGPS up to date.
