I am considering getting a new tablet and I am looking at both the Shield and Nexus 7 (2013). Today I can get the Shield for $240 or the Nexus 7 for $128. Both are 16gb, new and not re-certified. I want a quality everyday tablet that will be supported often and timely. I probably will not stream games from my PC to my tablet. I am concerned about some of the edge cracking and wifi issues the shield seems to have (according to what I've read online). That being said I'm also concerned about the Nexus being over a year old with "out dated" specs. Please provide thoughts, suggestions/recommendations, and comments. Thank you.
I ditched my Nexus 7 2013 because of the screen issues (common with a batch of them, but not all) and I was very happy with it while I had it. Although the price of the Shield is nice, if you don't do anything spectacular with it (like hardcore gaming) then I'd say go with the Nexus.
Either way, you can't go wrong, its up to how much you want to spend.
Just download Nexus 7 II Screen Tester on any of them and they freak out.
I think my shield now has a cracked edge because I dropped it too high onto a soft rug, a bummer when I've dropped my Tab S from about 3 feet onto a concrete sidewalk face down, watch it bounce face up, and only weather a couple tiny dents. Even so, the crack is barely noticeable. I'm more distracted by the little bits of dust and junk that get between the screen and bezel.
Regarding issues, I've had a few, mostly with the pen, but if I'd have to choose between one of these two, NVIDIA seems to have better customer support.
I had the N7 2012, and went through the same issue (along with a 3rd contender, the Nexus 9, although that was quickly dismissed because I don't like the form factor). In my case, I need mobile (LTE) support, so it was kind of a no brainer. The 2013 Nexus 7 LTE **STILL** doesn't have a Lollipop factory image available, much less an OTA upgrade. The WiFi versions got theirs long ago, but not LTE. Grr.
Not that Lollipop is an absolute must for me, but the whole idea of getting quick upgrades is. I'm not going to spend a lot of money on a tablet knowing that any given upgrade may take 3 to 6 months (or more) to filter down to me.
Had the N7 LTE upgrade come out at the same time as the WiFi version, I probably would have opted for the 2013 N7. Like you, I don't really play games, I'm a big fan of the Nexus line, and I gotta say, Wireless charging and NFC support are big plusses in my book. Quick updates are most important to me though, so the Shield won out in the end.
I have both. The N7 feels snappier for every day usage. Why? I dunno. For gaming and the like, the Shield is better. I also like the slightly larger screen, and the colors are more vibrant.

The crack is a known issue with certain batches of the tablet. I just exchanged mine at microcenter and they didn't give me any trouble, and I'm pretty sure nvidia will swap it for you too if you're outside your return policy.
My Nexus(s) have been handed down or are sitting.
Shield hasn't been put down since it came home basically.

Ditto for me except the devices are reversed. Maybe that's just complete coincidence, or maybe lollipop just likes to do that.
Go for the Shield. I have both and like it a lot more. The hardware is superior, optimized for performance, there's HDMI output and removable external storage (microSD card slot). The battery lasts longer under heavy load even though the display is more intensive, the controller is pretty cool and the stylus isn't a bad option to have. The device tree and kernel source is open and Nvidia releases timely updates. Don't get a deprecated product, go for the Shield.

I am seriously considering getting a SGT 7 Plus. I was going to be patient and wait for the 7.7 but I fear here in the UK that it will release at a silly price. I'm thinking I should save some money and just get the 7+. I have a few concerns with buying the 7+ though. I keeping reading about the problems with the random reboots and also the poor WiFi strength. Am I right to be concerned? I have definitely narrowed my search down to a SGT, it's just a question of which one and if I have to keep waiting for the 7.7 then so be it.

You are right to have some concern. But also consider that the 7.7 could come with its own host of little bugs too. We just haven't heard about them because its not out yet. At least the 7+ is a known quantity at this point. And fixes are being found for some of the 7+'s known issues.
As far as the two items you mentioned, I can say from my sample of two 7+ tablets (my wife has one too) that my tablet experienced occasional random reboots, whereas my wife's tablet did not. That issue went away, along with the tablet not waking up when the screen would go into sleep mode (aka Sleep of Death or SOD) when I was able to force the wifi to sleep when the screen is off. I have not noticed any issues with wifi strength with either tablet.
Ultimately the decision comes down to you. Is having the slightly faster processor and slightly larger AMOLED screen worth the extra price? Or can the 7+ do everything you need it to do within your budget and do it now?

Thanks. Just out of interest, your post suggests there are other issues with the 7+. What are they? My worry at the moment is that Samsung price their devices at a premium without actually necessarily being a premium product. On the other hand, they provide what I am looking for (small, light, SD slot, and great battery life).
I suppose my decision would be easier if I actually knew how much the 7.7 was going to sell for here in the UK. I don't suppose anyone has any ideas?
Realistically, I need to wait for the 7+ to drop in price a bit anyway. £349 seems a lot for a device with only a 1024x600 screen when higher res tablets are now around and more powerful tablets are just starting to arrive (e.g. Tegra3 etc).

Thanks for that. I feel the opposite though many ways. I think the extra .7 inch might be a good thing for me. I actually prefer the screen size of the 10 inch tablets by far. If it wasn't for the fact that I also want to carry it around too then I'd buy a 10 inch for definite. I thought the 8.9 inch would be a good compromise but they are ridiculously expensive in the UK and they have no SD slot built in. A 7 inch fulfills my requirements and will fit in my bag a lot easier but I do think I'll miss the screen size of a 10 inch at times. It's all about compromises I guess and what suits you best. In an idea world, I would own 2 tablets. One for on the road and one for home use.
The only other issue I have experienced is that I could not write to the external sd card unless I used the stock file manager. That was resolved by editing a permissions file. Other than that my 7+ has performed beyond my expectations.
As with any high tech device there will be some issues to contend with. None of the issues I've experienced would make me think that the Samsung tablet was less than a premium device. Considering it is a relatively new device that's been out for less than two months, the number of issues do not seem to be higher than normal for a new product, in my opinion.
Also be sure to remember that devices that are not functioning properly can usually be returned or exchanged, as long as you shop from a reputable retailer that has an exchange or replacement policy. As always, caveat emptor.

I'm seriously getting into dev work now for a living and therefore I need a tablet - my next app is going to be a tablet only news reader app (think Flipboard, Feedly etc combined and optimized for a tablet).
Was going to go for the Nexus 7 but I find it just too damn small and ugly. Nexus 10 is sold out and expensive and I can get a Note 10 brand new for about £250. Only things I'm worried about is the screen resolution and performance. Read a couple of reports about lag so just wanted people's opinions. Considering the price I can get it for as well would it be a good choice?
And if anyone can point me in the direction of some news apps they use on their Note would be appreciated
I do not feel any problem with resolution, It's enough even for watching movies. Reading is more than a good on this devices. Laging in multiscreen is solved upgrading from ICS to JB so it's not necessary to worry about it. You should not see any lags during reading of course.
I'm satisfied with this devices, but there is a lot of another cheaper solution of course. I can recommend SGN10.1 without doubts.

Honestly, screen resolution is fine unless you've read stuff / browsed on a nexus 10 or iPad 3/4. As for lag, I have come to the conclusion that certain builds released by samsung have lag while others don't. I personally don't and I'm on Build IMM76D.N8010XWALG4 which is android 4.0.4 (there are other 4.0.4 builds floating around as well).
Either that or you just can't satisfy some people...
Honestly with 2gb of ram I have never experienced lag except when I have a few things open, am downloading and installing apps and want to watch a movie.... What do you expect, even the PC slows down when you have a large amount of processing happening and ram being exhausted...
The resolution should not bother you unless you are one of the people who hovers about 5 inches from the display..
Other than that, the real concern for possible buyers would be the plastic casing. Are you fine with that, or do you really need that aluminium "premium" feel? Having played with various tablets (including the Infinity), I can say I honestly don't care because I'd put it in a case anyway, but if it bothers you, you probably won't be happy with this tablet.
Finally, while this tablet is really good, I think in terms of price and specs, you'd be better off with a Nexus 10 if you don't care about the stylus. You're guaranteed updates more quickly and for longer than if you got this tablet. Really, the biggest strength of this tablet is the stylus and its stylus-based application so if that's not even on your list.. I don't think you really want to get this.. (Although how much cheaper is the Nexus 10 for you? JW)
About the plastic case - From reading posts, most people seem to put their note into a case anyway... Whether its a folder style case, jell case, leather or silicone you'll find that the note is lighter than if you had the metal case....
As for the HD screen, I find the note screen is excellant to watch media on, as was stated previuosly, unless you sit with your face pressed up against the screen you won't really notice the difference. I like that Samsung really got the best out of what they gave and it isn't too bad..

I currently have the 2012 N73G. It's screeching to a halt, laggy as hell. I have tried just about everything and may be close to giving up on it.
I am not much of a gamer but the Shield tablet LTE looks to be at a really good price point for a cellular tablet considering its power. I had been tempted by the Nexus 9 until I saw its final price. The 2013 N7 LTE doesn't appear to be available in Canada at any cheaper than it was on launch day while already being a year old.
Any thoughts from this forum on upgrading from a Nexus to the Shield as a day to day tablet?

Hi there, I'm a Note 3 owner, Shield Tab Owner, and also was using a Nexus 7 2012 for several months until I upgraded to this tab. Definitely worth it, and I don't even have the controller or case yet. I've had it only a few weeks, but it has blown past all of my expectations.
It's performance is top notch. Seriously, that K1 does its job very well. No frame skips even in any of the Grand Theft Auto games at highest settings. Trine 2 is a beauty as well. Everything from multitasking to running intensive applications is comically fast.
The back camera is a nice addition, but I wouldn't actually recommend it for taking any important photos. It'll get the job done, but it certainly won't look as good as anything you take on a modern phone, despite its five megapixels. However, the front camera is the exact same unit and takes very crisp selfies and is very nice for skype. It may not be a good camera for capturing scenery, but the tab is great for video calling.
The screen is perfect. I have found nothing I don't like about it. Colors are great, touch response is seemingly perfect, and it goes pretty bright and stupidly, incredibly, dark. Black levels are some of the best I've seen on an LCD. I think it's miles ahead (subjective) than the N7 2013. Compared to the 2012 model, there isn't even a competition.
Anyway, I hope this helps. I'd say take the plunge!
Even the 2013 was a huge upgrade on the 2012 Nexus tab and the Shield tab is a huge upgrade on that 2013 Nexus tab so going from the 2012 to the Shield tab will be an amazing jump, do it and tell me how to feels. I upgrade devices too often myself so I rarely get a big increase in speed but the graphical abilities on this tablet have been the largest increase in speed since I went from my Samsung Moment to my HTC EVO!
I had the 2013 Nexus 7 32GB and the NST blows it out of the water. I was always jealous of my gf and her iPad Mini when I had the N7 but now I rarely think about it.
Went from the nexus 7 first gen to the Shield tablet. A step up in every way. Personally the nexus 9 looks good but the Shield tablet doesn't disappoint.

I'm in the market for an 8 inch class tablet and the Shield 32 GB right now is leading the pack in my analysis. I'm curious to get feedback from owners as to whether you (as users) would recommend it for me based on my needs and use case:
Requirements: 8 inch-ish form factor (check) LTE (not just wifi) (check), at least full HD screen (check) and microUSB support (check)
The thing is, I'm not a gamer, other than the occasional angry birds type thing.
So I'm a bit concerned a game-optimized tablet might possibly be the wrong choice. Mostly I'll use it for web surfing, forum reading, and other general uses. Looking for reasonable battery life, quick response, and a generally good user experience. Prefer stock android or light skin.
I'll be using it on ATT, in places with good or at least adequate ATT signal but no wifi. I hate tethering things to my phone... it gets hot and the battery dies quickly!
So, unless I want to spend $500-600 on a top end Samsung tablet, the Shield 32GB LTE looks like my best bet.
I'm a bit worried that it is out of stock lots of places, presumably either discontinued or nearly so... But I think I can still get it at Frys.
I appreciate any feedback or insights that owners/users could give me! Thanks!

I am not a gamer either...other than the silly Android games... I love this tablet for what I use it for which like you is surfing the web and stuff. I have had no issues with it other than the latest update has caused the apps to optimise at every start up....but I rarely power it off so not a big deal to me. I do have a controller and HDMI cable and have used both without any hiccups. The controller is great to play beach buggy blitz on the TV! I have watched movies via the HDMI. I find the battery life to be good for my usage...but as stated I am not playing power consuming games. I have the WiFi only version (16GB) and found that wasn't much space even with an SD card so I rooted and remove some stuff I don't use...like Trine2. But with 32 gigs you should be OK.

I would highly recomend the lte version, for 100 extra you get double the storage and lte and its unlocked! I have great battery on it and usally really good reception. I would just recommend do all the updates before you strart really using the tablet. My only complaint was after i bought it compusa had a closing down sale and they had them at 50 percent off at the end. But even at full price, WORTH IT!

Battery is a joke, with light use, the battery will last less than 8 hours, so be sure to plug it in the car, office, while biking, in the park, and carry a couple of the battery packs.
Do not open chrome. period.
make sure to shut down, wait 1 min then turn back on at least 2 times a day or it will be sluggish and laggy
the good part is that sometimes it does it by itself.... the shutdown part ( good battery)
get ready to RMA, I have done it 3 times and my friend 4 or 5

1. Screen flickers
2. RMA had a dark screen, next to another shield tablet both with the brightness at 100 mine was noticeable darker, like if the slider was at 80
3. RMA had a less darker screen but with yellow tint.

5. waiting on the response of the next rma due to dark / yellow tint

Ughghg. I was just about to order one, as I had no real negatives to doing so. Now this. And since it's end-of-life RMA will probably be a pain.
Back to the search. I'd be curious to hear from others how robust their own experience with the hardware has been. Practical battery life, screen, etc...
My use will be light. Typically less than an hour of interaction time with it a day, no gaming. I'd expect any tablet to last a week or two like this (my old 10.5" Samsung Tab 2 <wifi> goes several weeks on a charge, with <30 mins use per day, often zero use).

About the issues.
To be fair, im probably one of the lucky ones that got a perfect unit. But as for lag and any software issues, just make sure you are up to date on the latest update. If your on 4.4 it will work great but 5.0 was terrible, 5.02 was better. 5.1 is so much better! Battery is pretty good, lte does affect stand by time. You can always throw it into airplane mode or turn it off. Ive seen the horror stories of bad units,but i dont know how often that is happening. We are in a forum where bad and good get written about. So grain of salt even with my praise of it. Average screen on time for me runs probably 5 to 6 hours with chrome and about 30 percent brightness and on wifi. It works for me, i upgraded from a second gen nexus 7 and then a lte ipad mini retina. I bought the unit from gamestop and with the way thaey do returns it was once i gave them the money it was mine. But really i love the shield tablet, i have the shield portable and planning on the new shield tv box with 500gb hdd, but they gave the ps4 a media player so really iffy on that. So thats my 4 cents? Since i posted twice.
I read online reviews at places like Newegg and so on... it seems that a lot of people have problems with this unit. I'm putting on hold my plan to buy one while I do more research. They cost $400 from reputable sellers like Frys right now. I found it cheaper from some individual sellers or small fly-by-night places (techatrone etc.) but particularly with the problems reported I don't want to take a gamble with ability to RMA.
I may just buy something with a less exciting screen while I await price drops on models with better screens.
I'm actually surprised there aren't a lot of choices in the ~8" WITH LTE class... at least, not that work on ATT.

I have a lte version since release and never had any problems with it. 6 hrs sot not gaming though. Was always fluent and snappy and now on 5.1 it is better than ever. I wouldn't hesitate a second when I had the choice again.

I've gotten really frustrated looking for a tablet. The Samsung ones are feature-rich but locked down boot loaders and trouble rooting lollipop on the ATT version really turn me off. And the LG G Pad F has a weak screen by comparison.
The Shield is looking good, specs wise... I'm reconsidering buying one from a reputable vendor so I can RMA in case of trouble... The search continues but I'll make a decision this week most likely!
Did you look at the Dell?
Which dell? They have an LTE model that is rootable?
I looked at the Venue 7000 8" model but I don't see a variant with LTE. Am I missing an option somewhere?

It's amazing that in the 8" class, there are few devices that aren't massively bootloader locked.

As long as you root it and make a few modifications... you should enjoy it!
Make sure you update to 5.1 and unlock the bootloader before you get going. Then you can install recovery and root any time you feel the need.
I've had a good experience with mine so far, except I did RMA because my case had crack, but the RMA process was as good as can be.
The replacement is in perfect condition, and I didn't have much trouble transferring to the new one, so I guess I got lucky.

FYI, 5.1 is not available via OTA anymore until they re-release it after fixes. If you want it, you'll have to do via custom recovery. I just got my RMA (at no fault of the hardware, just software issue on my part) and it came with 5.0.1 and that's the latest for me. I checked the system updates multiple times through the day with no luck on this 5.0.2 that I have read others mentioned.
I advice you LTE version for 32GB storage. Pen is quite good, but not good at all because the tablet hasn't a real digitalizer. Very good for normal users (about 6h screen with Wifi surfing Internet, writing mails and taking photos.. not tested with LTE). Accessories are expensive but I like Shield Cover for its magnetic feature. I advise you this tablet, against Samsung ones, but you should see also Nexus 7 2013 LTE and LG GPad ones. Nvidia doesn't optimize Android system, and sometimes there are moments when the tablet is too slow, but only for a little time.
So far I'm enjoying my Shield 32GB LTE. Works great on AT&T (once I got past the activation fiasco), and it's nice and smooth for me on Android 5.01. I'm not yet rooted or anything non-stock. I'm getting ready for a vacation, so even if a 5.1 update came today, I wouldn't apply it until my return. I'm keeping things nice and stable for the next couple weeks!
I also got the ProCase. It's working fine. I was a bit concerned about the metal clasp scratching the screen, but it doesn't seem to harm it. The design of the case seems to prevent that challenge.

Have also the 32Gb lte version. As a tab its great and im enjoy using it. Only downside & a really big one is the build quality and build materials. It's my second one after rma the first one because of cracks near the sim & sd slot. The one i have now got also after a whie 1 crack near the sim slot, then some weeks later the second near sd slot. And now 7 months later i have a lot of them and most are near openings of the tab(sd, sim, hdmi, stylus...). I decided to not rma again, cuz im sure it would happen again.
Hate to say it because of all the hype surrounding the release of the Note 7 but this phone is not impressing me so far. Sure the waterproofing and edge screen is pretty nice but besides that what do we have above and beyond the Note 5 or even the Note 4? The 7 seems a bit heavier, the edge screen is much easier to damage in the event of a screen down drop, battery life is terrible compared to the Note 4 I'm coming from, Bluetooth connections are not reliable at all with any player I have, speaker sound is not the greatest, and I find the touch screen to be not sensitive enough to the point I have to double and sometimes triple press the screen to select something. Really trying to like it but I don't know?
On the other hand, my wife got the S7 Edge and side by side there's not a huge difference in screen size. Also, her phone is much more responsive to touch input, no Bluetooth issues, bigger battery, and at the moment $150 cheaper than the Note 7 (2 year deal @ Best Buy). I'm contemplating a return to get the S7 Edge and put some cash in my pocket or returning it to wait for the new iphone 7 coming out in a few weeks? Or better yet reactivating my Note 4 which felt pretty good in my hand today when I fished it out of the drawer.
Just felt the need to post my concerns with this new wonder phone and see if anyone else is having second thoughts about their purchase?
I agree. The screen sensitivity is a real issue. Always accidentally selecting stuff when swiping and other times it's hard to select things.

I agree 100%
The blutooth issue is my biggest dislike with the phone. I'm giving Samsung/Sprint 14 days to hopefully push out an update to fix some of these problems otherwise it's gonna be the Galaxy S7 Edge for me.

I just returned from Best Buy with my old Note 4 re-activated and I seem happier now. It was tough not getting the S7 edge with the $199.00 deal BB has right now along with free gear watch or sd card but I'm going to hold out for the new iphone 7 and see what apple brings to the table before I decide.

Each person has his/her own experience. At launch, it is tough to say what issues will last and what won't. The note7 has been great for me, and I'm not experiencing any of the lag, touch screen, bluetooth, or battery issues I've heard others complain of. If you can be happier with a cheaper phone, though, I always say, go for it!

Same for me, its been fine for the most part. I didnt like the keyboard so downloaded google keyboard and that fixed typing problems. BT I've only used my headphones with no issue. Battery has been better that my note 4.
I use Nova launcher, package disabler, google keyboard and SD maid to keep it clean. So far its been good. I put animations at .5 from 1 and turned on force 2D GPU.
For me, battery life has been great and I've had no issues with bluetooth after 5 days of use (so far I've only connected my LG Tone to bluetooth). I'm coming from a Note 3, as opposed to most of you probably coming from a Note 4. I normally would've upgraded to the Note 5 following a 2 year pattern, but didn't for many reasons. It was an internal struggle for me to pull the trigger on the Note 7, but ultimately I couldn't resist. If my current phone was a Note 4 I probably would've waited for the Note 8 2017. At least Micro SD is back with the Note 7. And I'm surprisingly impressed with battery life, although I'm still very skeptical about it's longevity. I would've easily paid the same amount for the phone if they just put in a removable battery. The Edges do nothing for me except make me worry more about dropping my phone. I don't like the fact that it's narrower in width. I realize Samsung is trying to sell more units and suck in as many people as it can, but the Note was made to be a specialty powerhouse device. I personally feel that the regular S series phone should be the main flagship, the S series Edge should be the 2nd fall flagship that battles the Iphone, and the Note series should be geared toward the power users who truly appreciate the phone for it's function and not for it's gimmicks and style. I'm keeping the Note 7 for now, but I'll probably pick up a Note 4 just in case. Do I like it or not? It's still too early to tell, but the cons seem to outweigh the pros. FYI, if you're unhappy with the direction the Note series has been going the last 2 years, let Samsung know about it. I've been sending them suggestions since before the Note 5 was released, requesting a Note Classic version. It would build on from the Note 4 with the highest quality current hardware and software, completely unlocked, etc...
