Upgrade from Nex7 3G 2012? - Shield Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I currently have the 2012 N73G. It's screeching to a halt, laggy as hell. I have tried just about everything and may be close to giving up on it.
I am not much of a gamer but the Shield tablet LTE looks to be at a really good price point for a cellular tablet considering its power. I had been tempted by the Nexus 9 until I saw its final price. The 2013 N7 LTE doesn't appear to be available in Canada at any cheaper than it was on launch day while already being a year old.
Any thoughts from this forum on upgrading from a Nexus to the Shield as a day to day tablet?

Hi there, I'm a Note 3 owner, Shield Tab Owner, and also was using a Nexus 7 2012 for several months until I upgraded to this tab. Definitely worth it, and I don't even have the controller or case yet. I've had it only a few weeks, but it has blown past all of my expectations.
It's performance is top notch. Seriously, that K1 does its job very well. No frame skips even in any of the Grand Theft Auto games at highest settings. Trine 2 is a beauty as well. Everything from multitasking to running intensive applications is comically fast.
The back camera is a nice addition, but I wouldn't actually recommend it for taking any important photos. It'll get the job done, but it certainly won't look as good as anything you take on a modern phone, despite its five megapixels. However, the front camera is the exact same unit and takes very crisp selfies and is very nice for skype. It may not be a good camera for capturing scenery, but the tab is great for video calling.
The screen is perfect. I have found nothing I don't like about it. Colors are great, touch response is seemingly perfect, and it goes pretty bright and stupidly, incredibly, dark. Black levels are some of the best I've seen on an LCD. I think it's miles ahead (subjective) than the N7 2013. Compared to the 2012 model, there isn't even a competition.
Anyway, I hope this helps. I'd say take the plunge!

Even the 2013 was a huge upgrade on the 2012 Nexus tab and the Shield tab is a huge upgrade on that 2013 Nexus tab so going from the 2012 to the Shield tab will be an amazing jump, do it and tell me how to feels. I upgrade devices too often myself so I rarely get a big increase in speed but the graphical abilities on this tablet have been the largest increase in speed since I went from my Samsung Moment to my HTC EVO!

I had the 2013 Nexus 7 32GB and the NST blows it out of the water. I was always jealous of my gf and her iPad Mini when I had the N7 but now I rarely think about it.

Went from the nexus 7 first gen to the Shield tablet. A step up in every way. Personally the nexus 9 looks good but the Shield tablet doesn't disappoint.

which one? nexus 7 vs touchpad vs galaxy tab 10.1 vs xoom vs ipad 2 vs tf101

nexus 7 vs touchpad vs galaxy tab 10.1 vs xoom vs ipad 2 vs tf101
what would you get
nexus 7 hands down got a lot of raving review
but I prefer 10 inch form factor
ipad 2 prices is on the high range, unless I can get good condition ipad 2 for $250 - 300 I might bite. I am kicking my self not getting fry's ipad 2 32GB sale for $339 a couple weeks ago and I was visiting seattle a few weeks after the sale where I could've order on line and pick it up a week later
tf101 is pretty decent, lots for sale in craigslist , OEM keyboard dock looks cool and really useful from what I seeing so far I am not sure how usable it is
Does TF101 has wifi issues ??
tf101 has stock jelly bean too if I am not mistaken
touchpad is pretty much not getting anywhere with android, it has camera and other issues. the downside probably forcing me to switch between webos and android constantly (seems like a pain to do). If I can get a realy good deal I think I will bite on touchpad
xoom seems pretty slow in XDA not so much progress in jelly bean development
galaxy tab 10.1 ?? any reviews? will this device get jelly bean?
what's your take?
thanks!
What are you going to be using it for, they are all different?
If you're going to be using your tablet around your house, or bringing it around with you wherever you go and using it for reading, games, etc. I would highly suggest the nexus 7. If you're going to use your tablet primarily for creating content, be it school work, artistry, work, or anything else, you're going to want a 10 inch tablet. I would suggest the Asus Transformer Prime for that. If you're lucky, you could get one for $200-$300 dollars off the regular price on Ebay. The 10 inch tablets are also great for browsing the web.
It's really a matter of preference. I prefer my nook color running cm7. It's perfect for me. I also have a cheap ICS tablet from china. It has a speaker and camera, so I use that one for social apps.
the important aspect for me is the OS is to get the latest android OS . Another important feature is front camera.
so nexus is hands down will always get the latest OS
but I like 10 inch form factor
I guess I'll wait for nexus 10

Tell me what to buy?

Hey all
Im looking to venture into the world of tablets but with so many being available its all a little confusing! I like the look of the Nexus 7 for its power and incredibly good price but for me 7 inches is just a bigger phone I want something with the price tag and power (near enough) of a Nexus but with something like a 10 inch screen to make it feel like an actual tablet. Im only 16 with a part time job so i cant go for something like the Asus Infinity even though i would love that
So start shouting out your tablet choices people!
Your choices are quite limited; 10 inchers are usually at least $400.
I would recommend watching slickdeals.net for some reburbished deal if you really need one. In truth, however, the difference between 7 inch and phone is already quite significant and it makes the most sense for your price point (short of a "cheap" brand like archos).
i think go for the ipad if you like a bigger screen than nexus 7 ipad is also have the speed.
I love the size of my nexus7 so far there's not much I don't love about this tablet!I hear they are releasing a 10 inch soon so you could wait for that but I don't know if it will be tegra3 or Qualcomm. Again this tablet rocks! Rooted w/ stock ROM cwm recovery & trinity kernel.

I would recommend the Toshiba Excite 10 inch. It has HDMI out with an SD card slot. That's the tablet I would get if I wanted one.
Another good option is the Asus as you mentioned. You can look up the Samsung Galaxy Note Tablet. It comes with a stylus and I think it has app that directly support it. You can't go wrong with any of these. Just pick the features that you want and get it. I would suggest going to your local electronics store and trying them out to see which one you like as each of them have customized their Android OS with their custom apps and settings. All of the mentioned above have quad cores so you can't go wrong with that.
If you're looking for smaller/cheaper then you can go with the Samsung Galaxy Player 5. Its $200 and its what I use for my "tablet" experience. Its smaller and portable than the above but that may not be what you want. Note that this is a single core so you're sacrificing power and size but you gain portability.

I dont mind saving up for the more pricey tablets because im currently 4 weeks into my summer holidays and the rest of my work has to fit around my A-Levels.
A 10inch Nexus would be great but the realease date could be a while yet!
I wont be taking the tablet out the house much only to go away to my Caravan every weekend

If you are desperate for a larger tablet then you could pick up something like the Galaxy Tab. It's a bit older than the Nexus, but stil pretty decent, especially if you run ICS.
It's on for sale for £279 at carphone warehouse www.carphonewarehouse.com/mobiles/m..._WIFI_16GB/HANDSET?portal=GLSHOP&promo=GLSHOP
Otherwise I'd recommend a Nexus 7.

I think i might wait for the Nexus 10 but the Galaxy note 10.1 is catching my eye although its aimed at artists and creative people ( I cant draw to save my life )
I have the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, and i have been loving it so far! I haven't even needed to root it, i'm still stock and its quick with a beautiful screen! I got the 16GB WiFi version with a 32GB MicroSD b/c i watch TV on it while i'm at work. The battery life is just AMAZING! I don't think i've ever gone lower than 50%! And i watch shows and movies for HOURS! There is some noticeable lag every now and again, but its usually pretty peppy! And it comes stock with ICS, they have even rolled out 2 updates since i bought mine! Thats rare! No word yet on if it will get Jelly Bean, but it doesn't matter to me, i love this tabby! Good luck on your hunt!
A good tablet would be the Toshiba excite 10. It has a nice screen, tegra 3, several ports, and very good speakers. The best part is that it's only $300 at Costco.

[Q] what's ur opinion?

Do u think it is worth to buy the new edition of note 10.1
Or u just satisfied from ur currently one
For me i will buy the new one soon for just the screen resolution i hate the old note 10.1's screen
Not worth it to me.. I'll stay with this one and just get a smaller tablet.. maybe the new nexus 7.. I will be able to get all the newest updates..

I think I'll hold out for the Note 12.
I like the upgraded screen but unless they come out with some awesome accessories or a killer price especially on a 64gb model there's really not enough to make me want to ditch my Note 8013 for the 2014 with side fire speakers, fake leather back, shinny chrome bezel and a mechanical home button.
.
Something about upgrading a tablet every year doesn't feel right for me for whatever reason. The only thing I really envy that's in the new Note 10.1 is the screen.
- Speaker placement is strange and imho a loss, but better the side than the back.
- Higher res screen is much needed and definitely a win. With the SD800 power consumption specs and low power high res screen and lighter but more powerful battery you should actually gain battery time.
- No Transformer like dock is a shame but there are plenty of keyboards for a tab and most likely a samsung approved dock as well just like the first model
- It may be to early to call NFC yet as the tech bloggers dont always do the best at reporting features but if it does not have it im sad as NFC has potential to solve some annoying bluetooth problems.
- Physical home button and soft back and recent buttons can be looked at as a win as it provides more screen room.
- The new SOC has enough power to run the new higher resolution screen and still give a tremendous boost over the previous version
- The new 2014 model provides close to double the power of the previous version and gives options that we have never seen before. Overall imho the tablet is pure success with a few bad ideas. If this tablet doesn't do it for you...nothing coming this year will.
So yea I think it's more than worthy of an upgrade. All that said though I'm still deciding if I will go note 10.1 2014 or transformer pad tf701. Both are phenomenal on paper, with the note coming in a bit more powerful imho but I'm just so darned attracted to the dock on transformer lol.
What does everyone think about the nexus 10 2? I didn't even know one was coming out until I looked in the nexus forums lol. Price is said to be$299.

I'm more then likely in since im currently selling my Note tablet on eBay.
My main motivation is the upgraded screen resolution, but I'm waiting for reviews and battery life stats first.
Until then I have my Nexus 2013 and Note 2 to keep me distracted from the world.
I don't have the urge to get it. I just got this one about 2 weeks ago.

And one more thing
I think its hard to get softwares upgrades from the new one as air command and the other stuff
And if the developers developed it and got it from the custom roms we will face alot of errors because the 2014 differ from the old one in hardware
Such as the buttons and i think the s pen also

It's a nice and fair summary. Whatever the the shortcoming(s) of the new one might be, I'm sure the new screen resolution and the increased functionality of the S-Pen will make all that go away after a few days of use. When I first compared a Nexus 10 and a Note 10.1 side by side in a store, my first thought was "why can't we have this gorgeous screen with an S-Pen?". Now, we have it!
I don't know why people compare the two, the note imp is in a class of its own especially for people that that full advantage of the spen

I wont be getting my next tablet until i see features that really impress me, plus some features of our notes or improved such as multi window, battery, performance etc etc
Plus, its gotta be in the market a bit to confirm that the tablet "does what it says on the tin".......in the end, im quite satified with my tab for now.......but will always be looking none the less
if asus gives us the TF701 with an S-pen and multitasking, samsung will literally have no chance.
as of right now, the dock is what's saving the transformers. people just loveeeeee their docks.

[Q] Shield 2014 or Nexus 7 2013

I am considering getting a new tablet and I am looking at both the Shield and Nexus 7 (2013). Today I can get the Shield for $240 or the Nexus 7 for $128. Both are 16gb, new and not re-certified. I want a quality everyday tablet that will be supported often and timely. I probably will not stream games from my PC to my tablet. I am concerned about some of the edge cracking and wifi issues the shield seems to have (according to what I've read online). That being said I'm also concerned about the Nexus being over a year old with "out dated" specs. Please provide thoughts, suggestions/recommendations, and comments. Thank you.
I ditched my Nexus 7 2013 because of the screen issues (common with a batch of them, but not all) and I was very happy with it while I had it. Although the price of the Shield is nice, if you don't do anything spectacular with it (like hardcore gaming) then I'd say go with the Nexus.
Either way, you can't go wrong, its up to how much you want to spend.
Just download Nexus 7 II Screen Tester on any of them and they freak out.
I think my shield now has a cracked edge because I dropped it too high onto a soft rug, a bummer when I've dropped my Tab S from about 3 feet onto a concrete sidewalk face down, watch it bounce face up, and only weather a couple tiny dents. Even so, the crack is barely noticeable. I'm more distracted by the little bits of dust and junk that get between the screen and bezel.
Regarding issues, I've had a few, mostly with the pen, but if I'd have to choose between one of these two, NVIDIA seems to have better customer support.
I had the N7 2012, and went through the same issue (along with a 3rd contender, the Nexus 9, although that was quickly dismissed because I don't like the form factor). In my case, I need mobile (LTE) support, so it was kind of a no brainer. The 2013 Nexus 7 LTE **STILL** doesn't have a Lollipop factory image available, much less an OTA upgrade. The WiFi versions got theirs long ago, but not LTE. Grr.
Not that Lollipop is an absolute must for me, but the whole idea of getting quick upgrades is. I'm not going to spend a lot of money on a tablet knowing that any given upgrade may take 3 to 6 months (or more) to filter down to me.
Had the N7 LTE upgrade come out at the same time as the WiFi version, I probably would have opted for the 2013 N7. Like you, I don't really play games, I'm a big fan of the Nexus line, and I gotta say, Wireless charging and NFC support are big plusses in my book. Quick updates are most important to me though, so the Shield won out in the end.
I have both. The N7 feels snappier for every day usage. Why? I dunno. For gaming and the like, the Shield is better. I also like the slightly larger screen, and the colors are more vibrant.

The crack is a known issue with certain batches of the tablet. I just exchanged mine at microcenter and they didn't give me any trouble, and I'm pretty sure nvidia will swap it for you too if you're outside your return policy.
My Nexus(s) have been handed down or are sitting.
Shield hasn't been put down since it came home basically.

Ditto for me except the devices are reversed. Maybe that's just complete coincidence, or maybe lollipop just likes to do that.
Go for the Shield. I have both and like it a lot more. The hardware is superior, optimized for performance, there's HDMI output and removable external storage (microSD card slot). The battery lasts longer under heavy load even though the display is more intensive, the controller is pretty cool and the stylus isn't a bad option to have. The device tree and kernel source is open and Nvidia releases timely updates. Don't get a deprecated product, go for the Shield.

Why can't samsung make a tablet of this quality?

This is not a rant thread, this just a discussion. I don't understand why samsung doesn't produce such a high quality tablet like the s7. Glass and aluminium build quality, the new exynos chip, vulkan, big ass battery etc. I would like a tablet to pair with my phone, that would look like it's from the same "collection", but we only have the tab s2 with joke of a battery, mid specs and plastic build quality
I imagine cost would be exorbitant
Typically, manufacturers are gaining a reputation, then the reputation works for them. Also came from Samsung
can but will not. . the market is no to big for it
Because there isn't enough sales volume to justify it. Even Apple can't sustain their iPad line and had to increase the price by $100 with the iPad Pro.
Sent from my SM-G935F using XDA-Developers mobile app
That would be awesome. Straight competitor with the ipad. I would definately buy one. But im sure it would be expensive like others have said.
So what it would cost as much as an ipad, Apple still sells them. Right now the ipad has no competition in terms of a media consumption tablet. I own an air 2 but I would trade it for an android tablet with the same specs of the s7 edge and same build quality.
Tab S2 is pretty good though
I still have my Note 10.1 2014 edition and love it. Battery life is starting to falter as it is over 2 years old now... But other than that it's still kicking ass.

Same! I love mine! Especially since it got Lollipop. The build isn't as great: plastic bezel, faux leather back, but I still really like it. And even if you don't put a case on your phone, you should definitely put one with a flip cover on a tablet anyway.

Whichever way you cut it, Windows 10 isn't a tablet OS. I have a Surface Pro 3, and before that had a Surface 3, 2, and RT.
Whilst they are all very good machines, I can count on one hand the number of times I used them without a keyboard as a tablet - I'd almost invariably pick up an Android tablet instead.
I can't see the TabPro being any different.

For a tablet with the brilliant quality as S7, the tablet price will be expensive than S7. For a small market with a expensive price, that is not a good strategy.

That's just because you are used to using Windows a certain way. Tab Pro S with Windows 10 is infinitely better than Android, because now it can actually run decent applications and you don't have to worry about it not getting updates. The hardware isn't the best though, and would have wished for something larger and faster (surface pro 4 competitor with amoled screen).

Have to disagree. Most of the touch optimised W10 apps aren't a patch on their iOS or Android equivalents, or simply don't exist.
Yes, you can run "real" apps, but that isn't giving you a tablet experience.
Don't get me wrong, I like Windows 10, but a tablet OS it is not.

I know you can run Android on Windows via apps like Bluestacks, but why bother?
The other thing about using W10 as a tablet OS is generally lousy standby time. I can pick up any of my Android tablets after a few days of non use and there will still be a decent amount of battery left - not iPad levels but good enough.
My Surface Pro 3 (and Surface 3, 2, and RT before) would generally have discharged itself completely long before the Android tablets.
