[Q] Console Mode - Shield Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am having a whole bunch of issues with my new Shield Tablet and am slowly working my way through fixing them but there seems to be a problem with console mode. It takes an age and never actually loads up. In the end I get bored and pull the plug, eventually is warns me to exit properly and blah blah.
What I would like to know is how long, on average, it takes to load and what I should expect?

For me, console mode takes about 30 seconds to a minute to load up. Also to exit console mode (properly) there is an identical loading screen and wait time. How long did you wait before unplugging it?

Agreed. Also, I have constant issues with HDMI not working at all most of the time.

Strange, I have never had a single issue. I use the mirror mode and console mode and both work perfect.

I wait about five minutes before giving up. Sounds as if there is definitely something wrong. I am generally having a lot of slow down, regular black outs (requiring resets) and very jerky games (portal etc.) and interface hanging. Watchdog and toolbox apps don't show anything misbehaving.
Quite upsetting really, I will do a factory wipe and see if it works with nothing installed.

It's pretty disappointing. I really want to send the sucker back, but I already returned one to BestBuy because they wouldn't match the free controller/games deal that everyone else offered. Plus, the HDMI out does work occasionally. I'm noticing some patterns, like it seems to always work 1st thing in the morning after the tablet, my receiver, and TV have all been off for 8+ hours. I think it prefers to have the controller connected first, as well. Maybe it's all just coincidence, it could also be the actual cable.

It usually takes me under a minute, shortest must have been around 20 sec.
I have gotten the occasional hiccup where the screen goes black and my TV (Samsung 2013 SmartTV) seems to re-detect the input (all happens within 2 secs). I've also once gotten the screen cutting to white snow with some RGB in it (hard to describe), re-plugging the cable worked.

Try different cables and TVs. See if you can't rule anything out. If you can't get it to work at all, send it back to Nvidia. They will replace it

[Q] Boot up time (takes ages!)

My Asus eee pad transformer takes ages to boot (like 15 to 30 minutes!) Which is strange because I watched youtube vids showing it only takes about a minute to boot.
I will also share relevant information that may be useful in suggesting why it might be..
K, so I bought an Asus eee pad transformer on Saturday from Micro Anvika, I was really lucky because a stock of 4 just came in WITH the keyboard dock .
Got home, turned it on for a quick test drive, took forever to boot like 10-15 minutes (but maybe it was to be expected because its new). Then a screen came up asking me to enter a password (it also said safe mode at the corners).
So I thought I had to enter a new password. But it said wrong password! Kept trying different passwords like Admin or android or Asus, no luck.
Seemed dodgey, so I went back to Micro Anvika for them to check it out. They thought it was strange and they did a "Hard reset".
So everything worked fine after that. Wifi, bluetooth, keyboard dock, sound all worked fine. I charged it for the rest of the day (8 hours) with the dock and used it ALL day from Sunday when it was fully charged.
So I shut it down at Sunday night, and rebooted it to check if that it doesn't go in to that safe mode, welcome screen. Took 30 minutes to boot up (just stays in that "eee pad" screen for ages), and it loaded normally with all my settings and customisations in place. Thank God.
But today, I switched it on again, took another 15-20 minutes to load and it prompted me with an android welcome page! To make it clear, I did not hard reset it, I just pressed the power button once for less than 5 seconds.
So I just turned it off, and turned it on again, and now i'm typing this post while this thing boots up and its been like almost 20-30 minutes now? and still hasn't booted up yet.
I know I sound like i'm exagerrating, but it REALLY is taking that long.
Now I wanna know if i'm doing something wrong here or if this baby is defective :S.
Again, I know I'm not doing a hard reset, because the guys at Micro Anvika said you have to press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Maybe their wrong?
Also, does it have to do with battery life? Right now, its less than 30%.
Apologies if post is too long to read, but this is really tedious, and worrying that it would keep hard resetting everytime I use it.
Any advice?

Something is terribly wrong with your unit, mine fully boots up in less than a minute from a cold start even when the battery is pretty low.
My advice is to make sure you have the latest firmware, and if that doesn't fix it, return it.
That behavior is in no way normal.
That's definitely not normal as I'm sure you know. Mine takes a couple minutes to boot tops. Do you have the latest firmware installed from asus?

Sounds like you have a development model/prototype. There was some other guy on the forums who had one with android 2.2 installed on it so we know they are out there. It definitely shouldnt take longer than about a minute to boot up no matter what you're doing with it (other than updating firmware). I've not seen any mention of anyone else mentioning a 'safe mode' before. Sounds more like a windows thing tbh.
Yes check what Android version you have. If it says 2.2 can we haz a system dump

Says quite clearly it's a Transformer, though if you skipped that part and just read his description, it DOES read more like it's got some version of Windows on there (which unless it somehow has an alpha of Windows 8, isn't possible.)

This is one of the main reasons I "liked" android tablets as apposed to windows, I liked the INSTANT ON start up of 2.0 or 2.0 but NOW.... almost as bad as my pc 1-2 minutes. I also seem to have problem opening some hyper links inside a browser, any browser for certain web site link.

Did you read it? he said it was a Eee pad Transformer
try to hold down the power button till the unit restarts. If that doesn't help it try a factory reset in settings. If that doesn't I'd return it.
If it is the W7 based eee pad you might have gotten a good deal. I assume they aren't as cheap
15 minutes does have the "defective" tone all over it.
I thought my boot times were bad. I just timed it and it takes 2 minutes from power on to fully active (widgets, etc. loaded). Here's a few points about my setup:
- I booted it docked in the keyboard.
- 16 GB MicroSD (in the unit) loaded with comics and around 6 GB of MP3s
- 16 GB SD (in the dock) loaded with movies.
- I'm running Folder Organizer with everything loaded in folders with custom icons and folders with browser links (also assigned unique icons). Also running Beautiful Widgets but that's negligible.
- I have over 200 apps installed and a few GB of PDFs on the internal 16 GB.
2 minutes seems about right. 15 minutes? Umm.. ..no.

P6810 suddenly won't turn on

Anyone come across this? I put it on standby last night after reading a bit of my book on it, and it had around 50% power remaining. This morning, it was totally unresponsive; pressing the power button does nothing at all. I've charged it for 12 hours in the meantime.
I've done the following all with and without the power attached:
- Pressed and held power for 15 seconds through to a minute
- Pressed and held volume up with power to attempt to get into recovery for up to a minute
- Pressed and held volume down with powerfor up to a minute
- Pressed and held power while touching screen (read that one off another forum)
I guess potentially it could be on and in a crashed state and unresponsive to the power, so maybe in a weeks time when it runs out of juice, I'll be able to charge it and power it back up, but in the meantime, I'd welcome suggestions.
A few weeks ago I updated it to the official ICS build that was released, but did the update myself rather than using KIES, as KIES didn't even recognise my Tab's firmware original version. It's been absolutely fine before the update, and since. I only mention it because I've read about the Samsung build of ICS being prone to self bricking itself, but I couldn't determine what the symptoms of this vulnerability were.

did you try connecting USB cable and plugging it into your PC? did u get any activity? can ADB recognize your tab?
I think your tab just ran out of juice and the battery's protection circuit has kicked in. Try taking it to an electronic shop and plugging in different chargers preferably one with an output more than 2.1 amps to kickstart the charging. Plug it in and wait till the charging animation starts.

Had the same problem while on holidays. Once the battery goes below a certain level, you won't be able to charge it through USB any more. Instead you need to use the wall charger.
I think it's bad enough that the 7.7 doesn't have a micro USB port, but things like that are just stupid and Samsung made a big mistake here. It don't think it's the same with the newer tablets though. It's also not possible to just buy cables or chargers for this strange Samsung port, so when you forget your wall charger at home at some point you won't be able to use your tablet any more.
As long as you charge with the USB cable early enough, you can avoid it though.
A few months ago I experienced the same thing, the Tab just wouldn't turn on anymore.
I tried all there is without any luck.
Contacted amazon and they replaced it with a new one in less than 48 hours.
So far not Problems with the new device.
I have the P6800 and this morning I took it off charge. Put it into standby and only used it for about 20 mins then left in standby all day. It had about 95% remaining when I did so.
Picked it up this evening and the lower left area of the screen was warm and it would not switch on. Didn't think of the ADB idea but will try this next time but I had to reset it and when it powered on tonight after the reset, it was down to 15%. Within about 2 mins of checking stuff it was down to 3%.
Something is running when it is in standby but as I can't switch it on I can't check with BetterBatteryStats or CPUState to know what is wrong.
It does this every day. I am tempted to do a factory reset and reinstall only limited software.

My device had at least 95% battery last night but today I can't get it to respond at all, I've tried the wall charger and still nothing.
Anything else someone could suggest for me?
Edit. I tried getting anything from it connected to my PC but it couldn't find a device there. However I then tried it on the wall charger again and now get a blue battery icon, quite big, with a five step animation indicating that it is charging.
No idea how it went flat as the battery on this lasts a long time assuming the screen isn't on. When it boots properly I'll have a look at what the most recent apps I installed were as it has only done this once. Before this it has been perfect for the three weeks I've had it.

hhmmm, interesting.
I was having trouble with wifi just before this happened. Both my GS2 and this have been claiming to connect to my wifi but aren't actually getting an IP address from it.
I can't remember if it was last night or the night before but I manually set an IP address, the signal strength is fine as my abode isn't very big.
After it has recharged I'll have a poke and see what I can find, thanks for the reply.
So my device seems to be working fine again. It had gone SO flat that the date and time were incorrect!
After I could power it on I had a look at Better Battery Stats and nothing looked wrong so I have no idea what happened. None of the apps I'd installed the day before it played up had long wakelocks and weren't running when I turned it off.
For reference they were:
My Tracks
MyTrails
Google Earth
AndSMB
I'd turned both of the GPS tracking devices off before I turned it off for the night.
It hasn't played up since but it hasn't been long so I'll see what happens.
Yeah, the sleep of death is incredibly annoying. Honestly, the GTab 7.7 is a **** device. Samsung made way too many mistakes and won't do anything to fix it.
A similar thing happens to me every once in awhile. The way i check to make sure everything alright is to see if it boots into download mode. I just leave it plugged in for a couple hours and it eventually comes back on.

this is why my 7.7 is the last tablet/phone from Samsung i'll never trust them they are just bombarding the market with new devices and leaving the old ones to dust
^thats what I thought too but that gs4 is really tempting. I've heard worse about HTC in that regard anyways so that why I'm not going with the one.
Finally.. i bought Sony xperia Z.
I'll sell my galaxy tab 7.7. I.m very disappointed with samsung.

^^ yo, this 'trickle charge' trick did NOT work on my (long) dead P6800... any other suggestions??
Quite strange because my Samsung GT-P6800 tablet was fully charged, it went completely blank dark as if it was off. To my amazement, SMS keeps dropping and calls kept coming in. Yet it is still as blank as though the tab was off. I pressed the power button and the volume up bottom for it to reboot. It rebooted without the screen coming up. It has been blank for two days now. What could be the cause? And what possible solution can be given?

I just received my Infinity and started working on it, since there was a new Firmware available I downloaded and installed it.
When done it said "shutting down" and turned the Infinity off.
And this is were the trouble began .. since the last few hours I am trying to get it to work again but nothing seems to work.
Pressing the reset button with a paperclick won't work.
Volume down + Power only lets the Tablet vibrate after 10-12 seconds
Pressing power for 20 seconds (ASUS suggested this..) does the same thing.
with/without A/C Charger or docking station same thing, I get absolutely nothing on the screen.
When plugging it in via USB I get the APX mode.
Is there anything I can do at all? I don't want to send it back of course and thought APX Mode will maybe help me install and / fix something "blind" since I think the issue might be related to the Firmware upgrade..

I did try the button combinations, and for NVFlash it says: THIS REQUIRES A NON-BRICKED AND UNLOCKED DEVICE. IT WON'T WORK ON ALREADY BRICKED DEVICES
Well.. I think mine already could be bricked, and I can't unlock it by installing the apk
If pressing Volume Down +Power only give you a black screen and not even the Asus logo it means you are bricked (could also be a hw failure, who knows) ... APX mode is useless for your device. So if u can't manage to boot into recovery or in fastboot mode i would recommend you to start the RMA process.

Nope nothing, doesn't matter if I press up/down + power for how long all I get is a 1 second vibrate after 10-12 seconds, with or without the Volume keys.
Pad is charged, same with A/C, when I try without the LED next to the power doesn't even turn on

How can a official Firmware Upgrade brick a device? I'm not new to Android and already own 3 HTC's all rooted and stuff but I never came across something like this ..
A few Things you can still try to recover the Infinty
Dude, that absolutely SUCKS! I would be so disappointed / angry if I were in your position, especially having the tablet for a short time. It DOES sound like a hardware failure (video seems out, but it's almost as if the tablet is running dark, and you just have no video. Can you return it to the retailer you bought it from? That would be 1000% better than an RMA, which is another thing that Asus does extremely poorly (They use a 3rd Part servive out of Grapevine Texas, and in MOST cases it is a nightmare. I don't understand why you can't bring/send it back to the point of purchase. You are not requesting arefund, just exchange for defective tblet.
As a last resort, do this: RUN THE BATTERY FULLY DOWN. Do not put the charge on, and keep checking if the tablet is powered on (touch the power button quickly, like you are taking it out of sleep mode. This could take the better part of a full day/night, but if you run it until the battery fully discharges, I remember a Prime user that this saved the day. It certainly is worth the effort, considering the alternatives.
Once it fully runs down, plug in the charger, and it should power up / begin charging and you will know in two seconds if it worked cause that Asus Logo will be the greatest site you will have seen in some time.
Oh, and something you can try before beginning that long process: I know you have already tried most reset methods, but humor me and put a pin in the reset hole - by HDMI, but instead of just pressing it briefly, press and hold for a FULL 30 + seconds. Some swear this changes the parameters, thiugh I am doubrtfull. More significant was mention that while holding the microswitch in, there is a "draining" happening of the memory onboard. I half belive it because years ago, I had an old HP Jornada Pocket PC, and one of the recovery procedures was remove the backup battery, and wait some inutes for a drain of memory to occur. You could SEE the LCD fading, like losing contrast super slowly. When it went completely blank was whenI was instructed to re-power up.
So try the reset pinhole for 30+ seconds
failing that, try a full battery drain
failing that try to return to point of sale
failing that do a shudder RMA with Asus. (Reach out to Gary Key - his PM and Email are listed in these forums. That way at least you will have a point of contact, and he may provide you with others. Good luck I feel for ya, especially with JB almost upon us! :cyclops:

Your are not the only one, afaik other users bricked their devices just by updaing with official firmware.However i'm a bit confused about that "shutting down" message and iirc the device only does a "restart" when updating,it doesn't shutdown.

Put it in APX mode and it will drain your battery.Btw are you sure the battery was charged enough when you updated?

I will try to find the thread - but check in the Prime threads - search for screen black, no video etc. The guy(s) that did it said that they just kept turning it on.. or touching the power switch - I know that's not too detailed. Here's the thing: a vibrate is what the tablet does NORMALLY when powering up... I think your may be running, you just can't see it. The only clues you can get are from the LED in the power button. Green means something like 95% charged. Amber means less that 14% and blinking amber (with no power supply attached means it is within the last few percent - Those are ballpark figures, you can find the full LED color descriptions with a bit of searching. Anyway it is you only indicator so, finding out waht the colors mean might help you in the discharging process.

EDIT: JUST NOTICED you said this is from Amazon. If that's the case, you have no worries. Amazon replaces items faster/better than any other retailer. In fact Amazon will cross ship you a new one and you can return this after receiving the new one - at least that's how they did it with my TF101... two times. On the third exchange, they try to refund you and make you purchase it again, but I complained that it was not the SAME problem each time (this was on the docks) and they went ahead and sent me a 3rd one. Just go ahead and do that. You probably would be better off with a different one, but check it CAREFULLY for defects. I am convinced that these are near impossible for Asus to build without screwing up something - Screen separation (viewed from the edge), scratches, poor cutout/application of the Logo (My daughter actually bled from a cut it gave he -sharp edges) and the INFAMOUS Loose Screen, "Clicking" sound - squeeze the tablet gently all the way around. if it clicks or makes any grinding noises return it. For $500 any defect is unacceptable. Good luck!

Anyway it is you only indicator so, finding out waht the colors mean might help you in the discharging process.

Thing is, even when it vibrates the LED is always off, only when I plug it in for charging it turns orange.
I will try the APX method Just plug it in to the PC and when the "can't find driver" message pops up it's in APX? Or do I have to install the drivers first?

You don't need the PC at all, just put it in APX mode and let it be. The led turns on only when you plug the charger.
Edit: btw, you will know if it's in APX mode because even if the screen is off the device will get warm.

Oh ok, since the only thing it does is vibrate I don't know if it is in APX Mode .. and it vibrates not after 5 seconds even when I press the volume up, but after ~10 seconds

Maybe that is why they pushed the release back. Because they found it was bricking devices, lol. That sucks, tho, man. Good thing you bought it recently enough to send it back with Amazon. I wouldn't even bother with anything else and just sent it back.
Maybe....you could see what's going on if you connected it to the TV/Monitor on the HDMI port....

Ok another trick and it involves some luck. IF its on and you power it off you get a very,very short vibration (it's hard to feel it sometimes) and then you normally see a confirmation box appear in the middle of the screen asking you "Would you like to shut down?". Then you either tap Cancel or OK. Using your "minds eye" try to imagine where that box is on that black screen and tap it where you would to answer the question "OK". If you have any luck the damn thing will shut off and in ~8 seconds you'll feel a longer vibration indicating it turned off. Then DO NOT turn it on. Instead plug in the power adapter and let it power on and see if that puts your video back up.
I'm just wondering if the cable to the screen inside has popped off the main board. I know i've read about that happening but it usually occurs after a pretty good jolt to the unit.

Hello friends. Having lots of issues with my tablet.
A while ago i noticed that my tablet was running a bit sluggish, and the brightness of the screen was flickering when on auto-brightness. I didn't think anything of it, but the next morning when I unplugged it after it was charging all night, it was at 30% after a few minutes. Every time I plugged it in it would say "charged", but a few seconds after I unplugged it it would go back to 30%. It's gotten to the point where I can't use it because it won't turn on. It's plugged in, but I press the power button and the screen lights up for a half second and then dies (i'm assuming).
I've tried other cables, etc, anyone have any ideas? I haven't been able to use my tablet the past 2 days because of this.
Sounds like it's time to RMA...

Rooting it would not cause this and I'd get in to a massive argument with anyone that claimed otherwise.

Mine also was having the same issue. I searched high and low for a fix and finally came across a thread here on XDA that suggested deleting a corrupted jpg image that is created by the default camera 'Camera Awesome'. The corrupt jpg image sends the media scanner into an endless loop that taxes the CPU nonstop. The folder location is Android/data/com.smugmug.android.cameraawesome. I would delete any subfolders also. Hope this does the trick for you. Another tip is to stop the Blake_wakelock wakelock created by the Shield Wireless Controller which drains your Wi-Fi continually. Download the 'Disable Service' app from the google play store and once it is installed scroll over to the system apps and long click the 'SHIELD Wireless Controller Service'. From there you can disable the 'BlakeManagerService'. You can always turn it back on if and when you need to use it but that will stop your wakelocks for now. Hope everything works out for you. I was having the same trouble as you but was determined to figure it out as I did not want to send mine back cause it is my first tablet and has a lot of potential. Let me know how it goes.

Nexus 5 new screen is not working anymore

Hello,
I had an accident and after that my Nexus 5 screen was broken. So I decided to buy an new one from Amazon (~60$) and I tried to replace the screen on my own.
Yesterday I replaced the screen with a YT-Video, then I charged my Nexus 5 an the "Charging-Symbol" showed up.
After that I left the house for 2 hours and when I came back (I left the Nexus at home for charging ofc.) I tried to turn on the phone and nothing happened.
Then I tried to press power and volume down to get into the boot-menu and this also worked and the screen showed everything perfectly (!) and then I tried to start my handy from the boot-menu.
Until then everything has worked well but during the start progress I noticed that the (starting-)animation is really slow and laggy, so I decided to try to reboot my phone by holding power off for around 10 secs.
I tried to start my phone one or two times more and tried to get into the boot-menu, restart bootloader, etc. and then I realized that my phone didn't even want to work anymore. I could(and can) neither get into the bootmenu nor simply start it...
Do you have any ideas?
What suprised me the most is that it stopped working so quickly, so I concluded that I replaced the screen right but anything else went wrong...
Please help me :/

USB-Debugging is turned off and I cant access my phone with my pc or anythin else

When my phone is in the process of booting and I force it to power off by holding down the power button, it will not power up until I either leave it on a charger for a bit or leave it power off for a bit, usually 5 to 20 minutes.

My problem is, that my phone runs very unstable and shuts down often so I can't really work with it.
Do you know any solution and the more important question:
How can I save my data? I think, that I can save it anyhow if I enabled USB-Debugging with the bootloader and a pc, can't I?
Yes, you could pull the data from the phone using ADB commands.
You could also flash twrp to the phone. Once flashed, you could boot into twrp, mount the data partition, and copy data from the phone to the computer.
You could also use twrp to create a nandroid backup for safekeeping.
Is it possible that there is a loose connection in the phone? Have you tried disassembling and re-assembling?

I have now moved on!
My charger cabel was broken but now I got a new one!
I can start my Nexus (with some issues) and it runs but sometims it still shuts down and always when I try to plug in my cabel into the Nexus the screen gets black (but on the side you can see that the screen is light up in some way, idk...)
Is there a reason for the heating and for the shut downs? :/
I'm not sure but it seems like the screen has suffered a hardware malfunction because you can see that the backlight is on but no image.

With a hardware failure, there's nothing that software can fix. Did you try disassembling and re-assembling the phone?
With the old screen, can you see anything on screen? Did the phone power up and charge properly? If yes, put on the old screen to test the other components to see if it charges and powers up.

my other screen doesn't work at all, completly destroyed...
The problem is that I can't imagine what should be the failure...
And yeah, I already tried disassembling and re-assembling it...

I have used cheap 3rd party screens to replace a few N5 phones and they quality is very inconsistent so I wouldn't be surprised if a 3rd party screen fails after a short period of use.

Nahh but the screen works I think..
Everything looks clear etc and the screen wasn't really cheap with 65$-70$ I guess..
I think it's something else because my phone gets really on near the CPU and this can't be because of the screen...

If it gets really hot near the cpu, then something else is going on. Could it be possible that there is a short-circuit somewhere?
Since the value Canadian dollar has dropped, I'm also paying about $60 for what was a $40 screen.

Yeah, I also thought about a short-circuit but I don't know how I can test this.
When I try to start my phone it fails like 4-5 times and then it works most of the time. The fail looks the following:
The "Google" logo appears and then suddenly the screen gets black, but not the "out"-Black (so that screen it out), I mean the "on, but black"-Black (hope u can understand.. xD)
During this 4-5 Tries my phone feels like 40°C-50°C (sry im from Germany, idk the conversion to °F value.. )
After this (I got the phone running one time for about 20 minutes) the phone doesn't heat up so much, if it starts right I think that the temparatur problem is over, but there is still the problem (also if the phone is running for 20 minutes) that it suddenly shuts down... :/
Sorry, idk much about canadian dollar, like I said im from germany and I payed around 65€
Google says, that this is around 67 (US-Dollar)
I don't know what to suggest other than either getting a new battery or new screen. Both items can be very expensive.
