[Q] Very slow wifi. Need help!! - Verizon HTC One (M8)

Hey guys, so I have had my m8 ever since it came out in March and have LOVED it. Issue I'm having is as the title said, my WiFi is SLOW!! On all WiFi networks I've been on. Specifically my home network, as it's usually what I'm using. As compared to my lte connection and other phones connections anyways. It's always been kinda slow with WiFi, never knew why.. my normal speeds is around 3-15 mbps. Once in a blue moon i will see 25 download speed randomly. I think it's been getting progressively worse as it used to be bearable. But every now and then it's just horrible! I will attach a screen shot I just took with it connected to my home WiFi (50mbps Comcast). About 30 feet away from router (Linksys WRT1900AC). Less than a mbps down and up speeds. Ping ranging from 30 to 200 sometimes. Standing exactly where I was when I tested that, a s5 active got 39 and 12 and a iPhone 6 got 47 and 9 pings both below 40. And when close to the router, both of those phones get all the WiFi! Between 50-60 mbps... With 4g like 30 seconds after that test I got 54 mbps download speed.
Anyone had issues like this before? any fixes you've heard of? Thanks for reading guys
Btw. Phone is completely stock. Never attempted to root it or anything.

What Firmware, radio and rom are you on? Are you s-off?

Phone is completely stock sir. Running Verizon 4.4.4. No s off or roms installed

Same Issue!
I'm having the exact same issue. WiFi is dreadfully slow on all networks. Tried factory reset, and upgrade to Lollipop and still have the issue. I used to love this phone but now I'm about ready to throw it against the wall because of this issue. Example, this page took 4 minutes to load completely.

[Q] Issues/Questions

Overall I am loving this phone. I have never had an Android phone this fast. I can't find a hint of lag on this thing.
I am, sadly, having a couple of other issues and want to get other peoples thoughts on things before I do anything "Drastic".
1) I heard somewhere they boosted the sound by 25%? If I have mine at full... I am hearing static and popping... like it is too much for the speakers. This is when I get a text/ringtone, or when I am playing a game (Robot Unicorn Attack for instance... don't judge).
2) Wifi.... I am getting weird "lag" when I am on wifi. Websites take longer to connect to and load... same with apps and the Playstore. Speed test I am only able to pull down 15MB/s. Low ping... but it takes forever (6-10 seconds) to connect to start the test. Have tried three different routers, same results (Netgear,an E3200, and a D-Link). Everything looks normal under settings. Full strength (in the room of the router... gets worse when I am downstairs). I unchecked the Wifi Optimization. Also it is doing this on 5 and 2.4 GHz.
3) GPS Lag - It seems to be taking longer than normal. I am going on a trip this weekend, and I will really get to test this then... but wanted to know if this is normal for an HTC device now a days (last one I owned was the Thunderbolt.... shivers, and GPS was always wonky).
Any help appreciated. Thanks!
1 - In my experience so far, the speakers are definitely louder, but I haven't found any distortion besides audio files that I artificially increased the volume on for previous devices.
2 - I haven't seen any WiFi lag yet. But I'm on vacation currently and the internet here is only 12mbps, instead of my 65mbps at home.
3 - The Engadget review noted some wonky GPS issues.

If you could... when loading up a web page or something... see if it is taking longer than normal to connect to a web page initially. Mine is acting like there is no internet... then all the sudden it loads up fine.
I am also noticing MMS is taking longer than normal to send (I had an S4 before this and it didnt take half as long... maybe it was compressing it more?)
I have just had radio issues in the past with HTC devices and want to nip them before it is too late.

I've been browsing a good bit on WiFi and LTE in the past 2 days. Haven't noticed any lag prior to pages starting to load, at which point I just blame the slow internet here.

Sadly I am still having this issue. Now that the phone has been out a week, anyone noticed anything?
I am not having issues connecting to the Wifi, I am just having issues connecting to the internet once connected to the Wifi. I have now tried this on 5 different home routers and several public Wifi areas and all the same results: going to a webpage has a delay anywhere up to 15 seconds before the page starts to load, and apps have issues connecting as well (Instagram will tell me unable to refresh, and Facebook will tell me I have no network connection). I have tried everything: Renamed the Device to HTC One, tried switching to 2.4 and 5 Ghz band, Unchecked WiFi Optimization... nothing is fixing this "lag".
Speaker issues - Still hearing a popping and crackling of the speakers, and I am seeing others are having the issue as well.
GPS - Went on my trip, I think I was getting the typical "Chicago GPS" lag before, as I would normally get a lock on with my GPS in 3 seconds or less while out in the middle of no where this past weekend.
I personally do not want to go through 15 phones trying to find one that has working WiFi, as it seems the One series has been having issues with WiFi since 4.3. Anyone have any suggestions?
Just browsing the forums for a WiFi issue my M8 has, to hopefully find a fix. This is what I have, not sure if it fits your symptoms as well:
Speedtest on network and bluetooth 11.39Mbps down / 3.85Mbps up
on network no bluetooth 13.98Mbps down / 3.98Mbps up
Speedtest on WiFi and bluetooth 2.53Mbps down / 5.53Mbps up
on WiFi no bluetooth 20.79Mbps down / 6.67Mbps up
Basically, if I keep my BT off, my speeds are fine and inline with what I expect to get, but if it's on it's at a crawl. Seems like WiFi and BT don't want to work in tandem. I haven't found much information on my issue yet, but I'm hoping to before I either do a a full reset or warranty replacement.

No problems here with simultaneous bluetooth and WiFi. I am using a 5GHz router.

Poor WiFi performance

I got my G Pro 2 the other day and have noticed after messing with it for a few hours that the WiFi performance is slow and the signal not as good as my other devices. I get around 10 Mbps on my other 3 devices, on the LG I struggle to get 5mbps. I tested it after I kept waiting for pages to load and would have to select the page again and it would work straight away. It's like WiFi just hangs. Anyone having this issue? I disabled battery saving and stop scanning for new networks but it didn't make a difference.
Another problem I get is if I switch phone off and back on again, auto brightness unchecks itself and vibrate on touching screen turns itself on, even though I unchecked it.

Neither of your two issues should be occurring, I most certainly don't have them on my device. Have you tried a factory reset?

Just tried it and it hasnt made a difference, I did a full factory refresh too. Its the wifi thing thats annoying me the most. Ill try using another router and see if that makes a difference.
What are your opinions on the LG browser vs the Chrome browser? Ill miss the swiping back and forward a page gestures in the iphone, I thought android did that too, but it doesnt look like it does.

I've never been a fan of the chrome browser but plenty are so try for yourself and see. On the stock browser there is a number in the top right which is how many pages that you have open. Touch this and you can swipe between them.
Look on the bright side, at least now when you open a web page, you will be able to see, it unlike on the iPhone.
im facing the same as u. other tablets and phone seems to be good signal but my g pro 2 tends to lose signal totally at times or 1 bar signal only.
which leads me to this thread after some googling. lol

Have you checked whether your phone is connecting to 2.4 or 5Ghz wifi? The 5Ghz makes quite a big difference with mine, but it's not always obvious which one your phone is using...
Dont know WHY ???

Hi,
Tthe first thing that i tested on this device is the speed. Sorry to say, but i think you are one of the few people who might have received a defected piece. I have tested this device and after a lot of research I've planned to buy one...(between LG G Pro 2 and a Note 3). Internet speed (rather app response speed) is much better compared to other phones(mainly Note 3) I am somewhat (personally) against Samsung. However, The LG G Pro 2 does not disappoint when it comes to speed. Try a factory reset or try upgrading your system. Kind of sure it might work....
All the best...:good::good::good:

Have you tried a factory reset...? Works most of the times.....Or try upgrading your firmware .....:good:
Did the problem. Solved
I also have the same problem of wifi .. So did your problem solve and if yes then how?
Could be the router, My wifi performance is blazing fast on Linksys e3200. I do know a few people who had issues with "incompatibility" between phone and router. The problem is solved with different, usually newer router.
Router works alright with my very old htc explorer
My router is pretty new, its ASUS RT-N66U and works good with the htc explorer at the same place
Any other suggestions?
Nono, I have seen the same problem since the first hours with my new lg g pro 2... this phone has a poor signal wifi if compared with other phone (note 2, lg g3 and oppo find 7 more than one time ).... and it happens everytime and with every router i have tried... about one line of wifi signal less ( i know that it isn't the best mode to compare the signal... but.... )
I think that it is a characteristic of this phone....
perhaps can try different setting on wifi security. Change to other form like WPA, etc. or mix mode. See if that helps.

I there I have the same problem I had the phone for 3 years and just 3 days ago started having the same issue has you have. I took the phone to a Lg branch in Korea I live here for now. One of the guys was very honest with me LG G2 and the G PRO 2 have a problem with the Motherboard (MAIN BOARD)so need to be replaced . So I book a repair date with them my phone is still on warranty and not rooted. IF your phone it is not Rooted Take it to a LG branch if possible or your Network provider branch hope you'll fine a solution. This way is the only solution sorry to say that nothing you can do and if you do a Factory Reset still same problem .

WiFi Slow, 4G Fast

I recently started using my N5 phone and when I first got it everything on the phone was fine and pretty fast. However, recently, my WiFI has been going very slow. When I'm on my data, the phone moves pretty fast online, but when I turn on the WiFI, especially internet pages take so long to load sometimes. Any suggestions on a fix or what the problem is? Thanks.
Also, I recently wiped the phone completely and started from scratch and the problem is still there. The problem is not the router as other devices work fine on it. Also, I'm on stock 5.0.1. Thanks.
I am having that problem too! Even my 3G network is faster than my WiFi...
Is it just the Wi-Fi on your phone that's slow? Maybe a coincidence, but my Wi-Fi was crazy slow early today/yesterday and I only noticed it on my phone because I want using anything else at the time. Turns out comcast did some updates that required power cycling modem and router. Just a shot in the dark if you guys use comcast.
Oh man thanks. This fixed it right up and my wifi on my phone is back to the fast speeds I was used to.
How could I do this please I have the same kind of problem
I am pretty much struggling
Happens on my Nexus 5 occasionally, but not as much as Moto X 2014 on the same network. That phone can almost never leave its WiFi on during sleep its annoying, rebooting the router doesn't seem to make much difference.

Poor Wifi Issues?

Hey gang,
Any Note 5 owners experiencing any wifi connectivity issues? I've found that the connection becomes completely unresponsive if I lose a single bar of wireless signal, and even during regular usage with full signal, the wifi connection will just drop off and reconnect back to the access point. I took a Galaxy Note 2, a Nexus 6, and the Note 5 to one of the spots where 1 bar drops, the Note 2 and Nexus 6 have no issues and still get 120Mbit on Speedtest. The Note 5 just times out until I get the signal back up to full strength.
I've made sure Smart Network Switch is disabled, and I don't see anything to disable any Wifi optimizations so I'm guessing that isn't an option anymore.
Regards,
--Henry

Unfortunately a router reboot does nothing, and I had a feeling it would do nothing since all the other devices are on wireless perfectly fine. Only the Note 5 has issues.
The router isn't a slouch either, it's an Asus RT-N66U so it's not some kind of cheapy wireless router
Bummer...
Yup major issues thought it was just me

WiFi issues here with an Asus router as well. My Nexus 6, Note 4, S6, and G3 are fine on 2.4ghz / 5ghz but my Note 5 seems sluggish on either speed and eventually drops out entirely until I cycle the WiFi connection

You would think that with Samsung being the reputable company they are, they would ensure their devices weren't plagued by these issues.
I'm on the fence about returning the note 5, the wifi drops out so much that I'm not going to settle with paying a big chunk of change just to have a faulty device.
Haven't seen any WiFi drops here. I rely on WiFi Calling while at the office and it held stable both Friday and today. Browsing seemed fine too.
I'm having the same issue. The connection doesn't drop, just becomes unresponsive. I have to toggle it to get it back.
Unfortunately, just because they're the same model does not mean the exact same parts were used to make them.
It may be that some phones were built with a router from a bad batch/supplier, while other sm920t are without the fault.
It may be worth a shot to do a warranty replacement. You can do it as many times as you need to get a properly working device, even. I dont think theres a charge, and if it is it's negligible. If you're the type to think you shouldnt have to pay for their mistake (like me...) you could probably convince customer service to credit the fee. Just remember to be nice... customer service is a crappy job, so you'd be surprised how far they'll go to help the people whom brighten up their day :-]

I had gotten a replacement today, and it has the exact same Wifi connectivity issues. New device cannot maintain a stable connection. Even my old, crappy Galaxy S2X is able to hold a connection better than the Note 5.
It's really sad, I had high hopes for this device but it seems like Samsung completely dropped the ball on this one. Looks like I'm returning it and looking for an alternative.
I am connected at home and office - i do not experience any issues. I have terrible cell reception at my desk which is why I use the WIFI

I dunno bud... my WiFi speeds are remarkably fast. I only pay for 75down/75up.

Oh it's not that it's not fast -- it's extremely fast! The problem is that the wifi constantly drops, even in the same room as the router, the wifi drops connection and then reconnects, interrupting anything that I was currently doing.
Hmmm, that's no good. I haven't had that issue with the note 5. if I did have that issue, I would try to turn airplane mode on, shut down the phone and boot to stock recovery, wipe cache, reboot, turn wifi on and see if that helps - not saying it will, but if it isn't working right to begin with, it isn't going to make it any worse.
Just a thought...
Additionally, I have had that problem periodically ( not with the note 5 cut its only a few days old), though it usually affects multiple devices, not just one device at my house. When it happens, even rebooting the router and modem doesn't always help. There have been a few times that I have called my cable provider and they "re provisioned" the modem while I was on the phone with them. After that, the problem seemed to go away for many months. The issue was actually the cable modem, not my router.
I posted in the generic Note 5 thread on wifi issues. Im having the similar problems maintaining a stable connection on both work and home networks. Home 5ghz N wpa2 psk, work 5ghz N eap-fast/peap, and work hotspot 2.4ghz open. All networks exibit the same behavior, the note has trouble initially connecting, where it try and drops several times. A bit later it will show the popup that it connected to network name. Any queries seem to be extremely slow or time out. I have manually set my DNS servers to googles with no change in behavior. Wireless calling effectively doesn't work while this is going on. Im going to get a replacement phone tomorrow, but this seems more like a software or driver issue. My nexus 6 had no issues connecting to these networks. My note 4 did exibit connection stability problems on my home network, even though the AP is barely 15 feet away. Im heading to my Aptment in texas this weekend, I have ubiquti AC wireless APs set up there, will see if AC connectivity is at least solid.
Asus routers tend to not play nicely with Samsung devices unfortunately, I have an asus router as well and I have had multiple samsung devices that are unable to maintain a stable connection as well. Something that I have done to make it less annoying is turn off wifi power saving mode. If you don't know how open your dialer and dial *#0011# then go to wifi at the top right. Usually helps the issue. Also I only have my samsung devices connect to my 2.4ghz network instead of the 5ghz.

Wi-Fi suddenly slow on my Honor 8

Hi
I bought my honor 8 two months ago, and it was working fine until this morning. The internet through the wi-fi connection suddenly became slow. It works for my girlfriend's phone, and both of our laptops, and my phone works fine in other wi-fi networks. This problem is only with our home wi-fi. I checked the speed with speedtest app, and after about two minutes of waiting, it showed the right speed, but surfing is painfully slow.
I did a hard reset on the router, and a cache wipe on my phone, but did not hard reset my phone, because it works on other wi-fi networks.
So my question is: what do you think is the problem?
Thank you for your answers!
Same problem
I have exactly same problem!
Are you using the Nougat beta on your device?
No, I'm using 6.0. Also I did a hard reset on my phone this morning, out of frustration, and still no luck.
I'm not seeing a way to pull up this info right now, but the b360 (Nougat latest beta for frd-l04) release notes mentioned that the "small-packet" wifi problem was "solved" with the latest beta. I updated to it via Charles method and the problem is solved for me. I had it in M6, N7 b320, but it went away with b360.
The way this particular problem manifested was during say, an app update of ~10 or more MB , you would only get about 300-400Kb at a time, so it was ~10 times as slow as it should be on wifi. If you turned off wifi you could see the difference because it would only take a single 10MB chunk to do the update. I don't know if it's the same problem, but it sure was a nice help for my case.
The strange thing is that my connection is normal on paper (speedtest shows the normal speed, but after about 2 mins of waiting), and download speed seem ok too. E.g. I updated one of my apps, and there was about 1 min waiting also, but then download was fast. But surfing and stuff, is slow, but just on my home wi-fi, and just for me. I it tried with different phone, it was working fine, and I tried my phone on other wi-fi network, and that was also fine. That's why I don't understand it.

My phone always showed as normal on Speedtest, which is why I think speedtest is worthless for testing speed ;. What if speedtest is just testing ping response? I don't know what it's doing, but it's a blackbox app that does what it does.
I would be more interested in app behavior results. Browsers should populate pages quickly on wifi, and if they do, then there's no good reason to go to a "speedtest". If they don't well, there's your real speedtest. Or, download something fairly big from the app store (it doesn't have to be anything you'll keep or use, just something over 10MB) and watch each chunk / packet. If they're < 500K each, then you've got that problem that I had.
Google Play uses TCP and UDP 5228 port. Maybe there is a limitation on that port. Ookla speedtest uses only port 8080. I'm not sure what's going on there. I could always see the problems on 5228.
I recently got this phone and find the wi-fi performance slow. My old xperia z2 could get the speeds I'm paying for which is 74mbs but the honour gets about 40mbs
Thank you for all your advices, but I honestly tried everything. I hard resetted my router and phone, I went through all the settings, and still the same. At this point I'm just waiting for a miracle.

Have you tried connecting to another WiFi network to see if you experience the same problem? If you do then I would contact Honor directly and ask them for assistance. They will probably request that you send your device back to them for repairs.

I tried my phone on two different wi-fi networks, and it was working fine. The problem is with only my home wifi, and only for me (2 other devices get normal speeds). And it started suddenly about 2 days ago, without any settings change in either on the router nor phone.
Since then I factory resetted the router, and the phone, and I've gone through pretty much every settings I could, and still no change.
I contacted my ISP today, they will send someone to look at my router. If they find out that the router is fine, then I contact Honor. But I really hope that the router is the problem.
I will write down the outcome of this strange problem, once it get fixed, maybe it will be help for someone in the future.
Thanks again for all your advices.

Do you have a dual band router? If you do try switching to a different WiFi band, could be that the WiFi band your Honor 8 is connected to is congested.

I tried this afternoon with an another android 6.0 phone (A5 2016) that was working fine in the past, and now it gets the same reception as mine. So I'm sure that the router is the problem.
I update the situation after the repair.

In that case there is definately something wrong with your router. Hopefully your ISP can fix it for you.
