[Q] Android 5+ Unresponsive/Battery Drain - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Having a very strange issue since upgrading to Android L -- thought I solved it switching to franco kernel -- but after 2 days it seems to have popped back up.
Randomly phone will be completely unresponsive via power button or any other means -- I can tell it is still doing things because the battery gets drained (incredibly quickly) and I see notification LED flashing when there are notifications. Only way to fix this is hard rebooting (power+vol down)
Oddly, when I look at the battery AFTER reboot this is how it looks (the empty area is during the lock up)

I initially thought this may be the sensor issue, but with the battery drain I am starting to think its something else (maybe memory leak?).
Anyone else facing this issue or have any insight on how to fix this?

have tried that a few times with no success. Problem only occurs in 5.0+ -- do not have this issue on 4.4 when i switch back over.

I have a similar problem with the phone turning off randomly and then in restart I've lost approx 50% or more battery life. If I turn the phone on and leave it alone for a few hours the battery slowly increases back to where it should be as if the phone can't read the stats right. I was going to sell up and buy a new phone but I love my Nexus and then remembered that Playstore Nexus devices have 2 yra warranty, even if you side load OTA updates.
I'm RMAing my phone with a replacement coming next week. Google confirmed that it was faulty but I suspect it's software and not hardware. To be fair the problem started with 5.0 and got worse with 5.0.1 and a cache delete and hard reset has not fixed it.
Can't wait for 5.1 in Feb but I'm sure there will be other bugs!

I called Google about something similar happening and they told me that if it was related to battery, the battery was only warratied for a year and they couldn't help me as it was out of warranty. Maybe I'll emphasize the restarting part.

It seems to definitely be a software issue -- if i downgrade to 4.4 the problem doesn't exist.

This is what people are complaining about with the "memory leak".
Reboot your phone nightly (while it's charging perhaps) and these issues will not appear. Otherwise, it might reboot on its own eventually anyways.
As you suspected, it's a software issue and nothing to do with the battery. The battery level changing drastically like that is common anytime the phone crashes or reboots itself and will calibrate itself eventually.
Google will RMA for software issues like this just to keep the customer happy but that won't help you in the long run, better to keep your non-refurbished device.

Captivate Hardware Reset Button

Hey, Just thought I should post this... To reset the Captivate without removing the battery, there is a connection on the board called "TP". It is right below the MMC card and you can barely see it with the phone's case on it. Here is a picture of the rear case removed. The TP is the white dot. It is covered with white paint to avoid accidental connection.

You can stick a needle through and ground "TP" to the side of the SDCard. Your phone will reset.
It's a signal line. and it's separated from bat+ by 1000ohms.
Thats very useful. Thanks!
Will this reset work on "soft" bricks and/or paperweight states?

It will work on soft bricks. I'd like to see how a hard brick would react to UART communications. I've got one comming, so I will be able to tell you more soon.
This is a great find for flashing addicts. Thanks so much for sharing this. When I get to my PC I will hit the thanks button.

I've found it quite useful... but I've been doing some non-standard things with my phone...
That looks sick! Someone's been having fun. Has your phone orbited the Earth yet?
Haha not quite... I've been researching non-invasive methods of recovering bricks, and it requires invasive techniques for analysis. Its amazing how many people brick their phones and how expensive jtag methods are.
Doesn't work on Hard Bricks. Tested.
So is it possible to fix a soft brick using this method instead of making a jig?
On my way home right now, guess I will find out soon enough, thank you
Wasn't quite sure what it was gonna do, and hoping it would magically get me into download mode, where the usb or power wouldn't. big down side, it botch'd something in my hardware, and my battery will no longer charge, can not run the phone without being pluged into the wall or pc. unbricked using a standard ol jig, flashed to 2.1 via 1 click, dunno if it just fried battery or did something else. Any ideas what to trouble shoot first? i've tried reflashing, few different roms, tried reseting battery stats, tried factory reset via settings, and via 1 click with no luck, wont be able to test another battery till tomorrow

You did something else....
I used this method about 50 times consecutively. No ideas for you on your issue.
This reboots the phone and that's it. Its easy for bench testing purposes. How long did you hold it?
Just until the screen shut off, then released, not really what sure happened. Is there something rom side that controls the charging of the battery or is it strictly hardware?
Just hoping battery just decided to die, needed excuse to get a bigger one anyways.
Edit-Yeah definetly thinking battery is bad now, it showed 100% charge this morning finally, but as soon as i unplugged from wall it died, plugged it back in and was showing it dead again. Soo hmm, dunno sound like bad battery? fixin to make the 30min trip to ATT store to see if they can check it or swap it.
just wanted to say, i wasn't trying to imply the reset you pointed out had killed the phone, i just wasn't quite sure what happened, and this had been one of the last things i had done.
I just didn't realize a battery could go that quickly, had it tested today, and the guy at store said i was the first person he could tell without a shadow of a doubt there battery was dead.
1500mAH battery, and it read dead at first then full charge on tester at 28mAH.
This looks very interesting and I would like to try it out. Before I try it, I was wondering if you could explain it more in depth like if the battery should be in the phone, if it is necessary for the battery to be fully charged and if this method will work on all Captivates. I also noticed a number on your sd card slot that is different than mine but I assume all phones have a different one. Thanks in advance

[Verizon] Blue SGS3 Power Problems

Blue 32g SGS3 just died this morning. Worked fine since it was first powered up on 6/6. Overnight charges were fine bringing the battery to 100%. Have not rooted it yet. This morning noticed that the screen was dimmed while it was actively being used (then, after a short time, the brightness returned). Set the phone down for a few minutes, returned and now it's completely dead. Won't power up, plugging in the AC power does not show the charging battery display.
Found one post: www modaco com /topic/355514-sprint-sgs3-screen-sometimes-wont-turn-on/ that seems to indicate that this problem is isolated to the blue SGS3's.

I'm confused. What would the case color have to do with the circuitry of the phone. Just because this has only been reported on blue phones does NOT mean the problem is related to the phone being blue.

Blue 32G Power Problems
Sorry 'bout the typo in my first post. Received the phone 7/6.
Took the phone to the VZ store. Tech there was unable to get the device to power on. Tried all of the usual options (ie. replacing the battery). Had the tech call VZ level 2 which was pretty much a waste of time. Level 2 tech said that I couldn't RMA the device because it was still in pre-order status which was after she said that if the phone was RMA'ed I would end up at the end of the pre-order queue. There was no possible way to get a new phone overnighted to me. Was told that the easiest solution would be to go to a VZ store on Wednesday (launch day) and RMA the phone then.
I mentioned that the Blue phones seem to have problems and asked about changing the color to white on Wednesday. Was told that there would be a restocking fee as the blue and white phones have different sku's. Obviously wasn't too happy, but will fight that battle with VZ on Wednesday.
At the end of the visit, the VZ tech reactivated my old Droid I.

Ok. I see the link. Not sure how valid it is but at least there's something there...
Thanks!
Mine has had problems since I turned the thing on. The screen turns purple with lines through it then it dies and I have to pull the battery to get it back on. Just waiting til it releases in stores to do an exchange.

[Q] [HELP] Note 10.1 Sudden Death

Hey guys,
Not sure what has happened to my note. I remember I only charged it overnight and in the morning I tried to turn it on and it stuck in the SAMSUNG NOTE 10.1 booting screen. So I did a quick search and I pressed power button + vol up button. After trying it a few times without any luck, my note suddenly went to this state (TV noise like - see pic). I could not do anything to it. Could anyone help me with this please? I am pretty noob in android device and never done any rooting and stuffs but pretty handy with PC. Thanks guys. Any help would be really appreciated.

Similar to my daughter's 8010. It kept freezing and would sometimes show a screen like that. Samsung replaced the Motherboard in the end.

If you're out by just a month or 2 I'd claim expected warranty. In Oz if the warranty is out by a small amount you can get it fixed under warranty because it is expected that the item will still be running outside the warranty period. It's ridiculous to have an item fail just out of warranty. It is expected to work for a while longer, not quit a week or month after the warranty ends...

Random shutdowns to 0% battery

Hello all
I have a G-930F running stock 7.0 Nougat and am not rooted. Recently my phone randomly shuts down and when restarted manually says the phone as 0% battery, despite the phone being on 60% before turning off. I got a 64gb micro SD card for Christmas which is the only major change I have made to my phone. Does anyone know what could be causing this/do I need to fit a new battery?
Please find attached a screenshot of my battery usage.

Could be the battery has failed, not uncommon amongst the S7's from the number of people I see complaining about the same thing
Could try clearing cache from recovery, and even a factory reset just to be sure it's not firmware related
Maybe even flash stock again with ODIN
Thanks for your response
Ive wiped the cache, if it continues will factory reset/flash stock
Might just be easier to get a new battery tbh

Probably, but would suck if you went through the whole process of heatgun removing the back of the phone, killing the IP68 waterproofing, warranty etc, just to find it still did it because of firmware
Probably is the battery though
Where are you (and your phone) when this happens?
It might be related to cold temperatures.
I had a similar issue anytime I use my phone out in the cold, the battery drops almost instantly.

I'm in London and it is quite cold, I'll take note of the temperature when/if it happens again, maybe even turn up the heating hahah
It happened today afternoon and it was very cold, and this morning where it also was quite cold so this could play a part, weird tho as I'm also in Sheffield where it is also quite cold and this problem didn't occur

I'm right on the coast of the North East UK and it's snowing and icy outside, very cold in the mornings in the house before heating comes on, and no issue with the S7 battery (My iPad screen is so cold it needs wiping before I can use it, like condensation over the screen)
Although if the battery was on it's last legs anyway, it's possible the cold could affect it in ways it wouldn't to a healthy battery
I don't know how accurate AccuBattery is in telling the health of the battery, but it is in very poor condition, I've also reformatted my sd card, and the phone has not yet restarted (fingers crossed), will probably replace the battery in the new year
I've been getting the same experience .. I live in NL and it's not that cold .. the last time it happen was just now, and it's 12 degree outside ..
I think it got something to do with the last update (that was the last major change I had) ..

So yesterday it happened again so I removed the SD card however about 2 minutes ago it happened again, so I think it is due to the battery itself, will have to replace in the new year since I made my warranty invalid by getting my screen replaced and they removed the gold sticker on the inside
I have now replaced the battery, turns out the original had swollen quite considerably, as you can hopefully see in the pictures. The battery should be as thick as the black section and the grey part entirely on the bottom face.
Will report back if random restarts/switching off still occurs

Yea that's when it starts filling with gas, the plastic casing is airtight, but the gas is flammable if it leaked, I've had an MP3 player do that and the battery swole up so much it popped the front off the MP3 player, it was almost rounded
Hopefully your problems are solved
been two days no issues so the new battery seems to have done the trick
i did tweet samsung about the swollen battery, they gave me a call but since i did the repair myself they obviously won't look into it, but didnt answer my question about whether or not this was a known issue/could it happen to other people etc
You solved it allready. ...
yesterday I received a software update for the phone ... so last night I let my phone run through the battery ... this morning I woke up and it still on with batt level around 39 percent ... before, I could never reach 50 percent .. It would go from 60 something percent than suddenly died ..
