Nexus 5 vs G2? Which to go for?

Hi guys,
Ordered a Nexus 5 black 32GB to be dispatched for 5th Nov - that's almost £350. Still need to order a bumper - which brings cost to close to G2's £400 price tag. I know the spec is great all round - the only thing to watchout for is the battery.
Just a bit concerned on the battery. Not sure if Google's own optimisation is enough to compensate for its smaller battery.
Would you get G2 or Nexus 5? :silly:

Depends on what is important to you.
N5 wins on software (updates/roms), wireless charging, price
G2 wins on screen size, battery, and Camera.
Dimensions are very close, 1mm diff all around (roughly). Weight is negligible.
Honestly overall the G2 is a better specced phone, but if software is important to you then the N5 wins hands down. Or if saving 50 is important.
The G2 is a BEAST when it comes to battery though, so I think the N5 will be fine, though likely not a superstar.
I have a G2 and still ordered an N5 and will decide which is the winner for me later. It is a very tough call IMO. I am waiting to see how it feels in hand and the difference in pictures and just how long the N5 lasts on battery. Also to see how the software runs. When the N4 came out it felt blazing fast with an older CPU than what I had due to software, so I am hoping/suspicious that the N5 will feel much faster than the G2 even though they have the same hardware.

Upgrading from S3 - which has been buggy lately so hoped to get a Nexus 5.
Vanilla Android sounds fantastic - and 32GB means I won't need memory card.
Nexus 5 would still be a upgrade from S3 right?

N5 will be a HUUUUUGE upgrade from an S3 .
Vanilla is available on both (Rom's for G2), BUT will be far better/more supported on the N5.

Have you seen the G2 development forums? They have blown up over the past week and every major custom ROM is now available for it. CM has no deal breaking issues on it so far.

I think that many of the people who have been holding out for the N5, but now find it underwhelming (for whatever reason) probably considered the G2 as "plan B" since G2 is the most similar and may have the missing features that they wanted that the N5 didn't. So there should probably be more traffic at the G2 forums sooner or later.

As a previous N4 owner, I got the G2 2 weeks ago, primarily for the battery, but also ordered the N5 (within 15min of launch). The N5 will be my backup/tinkering phone, while the G2 will be my primary since it has most of the important stuff I need.
On top of what crawlgsx has said, here's something to consider. The G2 has narrow "flat" sides, so the curved back starts closer to the edge, and ends deeper into the back, creating a more ergonomic shape. The N5, though slightly slimmer than the N4, now has thicker sides, making it "block-ier". As a medium - heavy user, this matters to me

Oh yeah I'm loving it! PA is running flawlessly on mine.
But we both know the N5 will surpass it in no time and obviously AOSP will run 100% flawless on an AOSP device, as where we may end up with lingering bugs or whatever. Not saying it is there just a generalization.
The development has gone way up / awesome on the G2 though.

Cancelled my order.
Plain Android on N5 would have been very nice, getting all the new features as its rolled-out, etc - but I decided that G2 has a considerably better battery - micro SD, etc. Spending £350 is okay on N5 had G2 not existed - since G2 does exist, it doesn't make sense to get something that's not quite as good for almost the same amount. Can't imagine Snapdragon 800 running off 2300mhz battery to be honest. At £239 I could have lived with that - but £350 delivered is well into the flagship price range - can't justify it.
Well back to square one now.

Any chance the battery on the G2 can fit in the N5 (perhaps with a little shaving off the edges, etc...)?

For the life of me I don't see an Optimus G2 subforum here at XDA, must be getting older than I thought... or is this some forum located elsewhere? Link would be appreciated, thanks.

Thanks, apparently they're just referring to it as the LG G2, not LG Optimus G2 which was throwing off the search.

I assume you are aware by now that the LG G2 does not have a microSD slot (except the South Korean version).

I'd personally go for G2 if it was no more than £400 for 32GB version but that's not available!

Battery is my only concern. Now that camera samples are showing up it seems as if Google finally may have gotten the camera right.
But the battery....
Hopefully the OS is well optimized. We all know that's actually more important than battery size, right?

It is not called Optimus, just LG G2 (D800/D801/D803, etc)

Honest opinions

Hi guys hope I'm posting this in the right place. I currently have a moto x 2014 but I'm not a fan of the battery life or unpredictable camera.
So my question is, do you think its worth me getting the one plus one? Or do you think the LG G3 would be a better option? Keeping in mind I'm in the UK so we have the 2GB G3 over here.

Why would you want the OPO over the G3 or the G3 over the OPO? Both are fantastic phones, it just comes down to personal preference.

Well I'm struggling to decide between OPO and the G3 at the moment because I want a good camera and apparently the G3 has a better one than the OPO and good battery life which OPO beats G3 but I hear G3 has lag issues and shuts itself off occasionally for no reason when not being used and you have to turn it back on when you realise its gone off. I know 3 people all with that same issue, but its a nice looking phone lol

I've had the OPO (I've had two actually) and although I've not had one for a long time I wasn't a huge fan of them. The phone is great, but the support is terrible should anything go wrong. Also, I couldn't use Sky Go as it picks up the rooted nature of CM11S, even with root disabled, so I can't use it
Hardware-wise the phone is great but I'd wait for the M9/S6/S6 Edge/G4 and make a decision from there (or even wait for the OP2)

Ah OK that shines some more light on the OPO lol. I hate Samsungs, touchwiz is aweful and although I can install a 3rd party launcher, the look of the settings and notification area is horrible

Plenty of opinions around. The opo's main issues remain the screen sensitivity/ghost swipes and updates gone wrong.
The touch was very much improved to the point where it's almost neglectable by now. I will still get a ghost swipe once or twice during a week. It's not as sensitive as, say, an iPhone, but it doesn't disappoint either.
Battery is a beast. I've never seen a smartphone last as long as the opo. It can go for 2 days with medium-slightly heavy use. Doing almost nothing I can push it 3 days and there's been people who did more.
Software is great. It's cm, aka stock with plenty of options everywhere. Stability is rock solid.
Updates show up often enough. It's taking more than expected for Lollipop but it's a major version, so it's kind of expected.
As for updates gone wrong, I personally have no issue whatsoever but I've seen it happening. Can't elaborate any further, all running great here.
It's a good phone even if it's a bit too big. I'd still get it.
Can argue vs the g3, never had one.

I actually have two OPOs and one of them has all of the touch issues. Don´t get me wrong, it´s AWFUL ANNOYING DISGUSTING to have them. But the phone does just so many things right in so little time and is so damn smooth when the touchscreen works that I just happen to love it. I had the pleasure to have a LG G3 for one week, THE FIRST DAY I had to root it and so on, disgusting performance and subpar battery life. It got way damn better, though stability was compromised.
So for me, it is worth taking the risk of buying an OPO, hell if you don´t have any of the issues reported as being standard, you get an awesome phone, the fastest out there, faster than a stock GN4, god knows what rooting could do to it...
However, if you prefer a near flawless phone with a little less performance and responsiveness and battery life, but a better screen and camera, i gotta give it to the LG G3, you should go with it.
OPO all the way for me...

The question is, is it worth changing from a moto x 2014 to the OPO? Lol I HATE the camera on the moto x 2014 its terrible IMO so I'm hoping the OPO has a better camera

As they say "if it is not broken, why change it?" Apart from the camera, is everything else to your satisfaction? Why not save the money and buy a dissent mirrorless aps-c camera like the Samsung nx-300m? Compared to any phone it far than better.

I owned three Moto X 2013 three times, bought two OnePlus, sold both, bought a Moto X 2014, sold Moto X 2014, bought another OnePlus, bought another Moto X 2014 on sale. Sold the Moto X 2014 again.
The Moto X 2014 is have a very exquisite design that I love. Superb signal and voice call quality. There wasn't any other phone better for data speed and getting good phone calls. The thing that I couldn't live with were:
-24gb of actual storage space from 32gb, and this was supposed to be a lightweight phone.
-Battery life while not bad is average, won't last the whole day like the OPO.
-Camera sucks, not the hardware itself, but the post processing technology. The Moto G 2014 takes better low light photos than the Moto X 2014, this is fact, I have done side by side comparison.
Phone camera has never been that important for me, but lately taking decent photo is something I need.
The Moto X camera have a few issues:
-Not great details in the distance.
-Extremely grainy low light shots, this can be cured by using HDR, the post processing will vastly improve the image quality, looking almost as good as the OnePlus, however, HDR shots mean you need to keep the phone still.
-Crappy at focusing macro details with video recording.
OnePlus camera is the best phone camera I've used so far in term of details. It's even more details than iPhone videos, since it takes 4K DCI video. Where other phones does better is they have better post processing technology, so they can deal with variety of situation and take much better low light photos. However, if you use the OnePlus and an advance camera app that let you tweak settings, you can control variety of things to get images that you want.
The one flaw with any CyanogenMod rom or rom based on it for this phone, is that continuous autofocusing for video recording will not work correctly. This is a hardware driver issue. I have to use ColorOS + Google Camera or the CM11S "CameraNext" app to get it working correctly. I won't be switching back to another rom until this issue is fixed.
The performance, battery life, display and overall function of this phone is great. Where it lost to the Moto X is the LTE signal and call quality, it's a world difference, but this is true for most other brand that isn't Motorola.
If you can get the OnePlus for the same price of the G3, then get the OnePlus, but not if it cost more.

Tell my why I shouldn't return my One M9 for an S6

I've had my HTC One M9 for 2 days now, and I'm starting to see things that are disappointing to me. Especially for such a high end, pricey device. Battery life is not very good at all compared to my old LG G2. And it takes forever to charge. The camera is, for lack of a better word, horrible.
I'm trying to decide if I should return it to T-Mobile in exchange for a Galaxy S6. All the reviews I've read and watched lean toward the S6.
Tell me why or why not?

I was torn between the m9 and s6..after watching the keynote and seeing hands on videos, I quickly decided on the s6. I'm glad I did. Pictures look better than my g2 (the phone I came from). The screen crispness, colors and brightness is superb! Didn't mind not having micro SD or removable battery since I didn't have it before.
The only thing I find weird to adjust is that whites seem to have a yellow tint, where as on my g2 they were more blue or white (in my opinion).
The front facing camera is really nice quality too.
S6,higher res screen in a slightly bigger screen size. The size of s6 is smaller and lighter than the m9.

Well... the only cons are the same cons that every review mentions. Lack of SD card slot and price. Also the speaker quality is obviously lesser on the S6 if that matters to you.
The only other consideration is how much you care about rooting/unlocking/custom ROM support, which will certainly be stronger on the M9 just because it's a Snapdragon device. At least that's how it'll be initially.
Other than those, the M9 loses in every other measurable area.
So really the M9 Vs. S6 issue comes down to how much the price difference matters, how much you care about "3rd party" support, and whether or not you need a SD card slot.
Edit: Suppose the M9 warranty program is worth considering as well.

We'll, my G2 was running aicp 5.0.2 with custom rom which I could easily go 24hrs and be fine.
So far my s6 has slightly less battery life. But i can quickly go from 15% to 100% in an hour. Balances out. I'm using the s6 a lot to get things setup and such, so not quite a fair comparison. Letting the battery settle in for a week.
I do see a speed difference between my g2 and the s6 though
I'm even kinda been on the fence to keep my G2 and hold out what's to come in the fall, but that is very unlikely for me to do.

The s6 is faster, or the g2? Same here with waiting. I wanted to wait for the g4, but with T-Mobile's jump, I'm able to upgrade every 6 months. So, no biggie if I wanna go back to LG at the end of the year.

I haven't gotten the S6 yet since I'll have to wait until April 10th, and I'm also coming from a G2.
The S6 will definitely be faster- even though I really do enjoy my G2.

All the Bestbuy locations have the S6/Edge on display. I suggest you check them out in person.

If you are coming here to ask you have already made your decision. To be honest if you are interested in a G4 id wait until its announced and compare that to the S6 then get a device.

I'll tell you why you SHOULD return your One M9. The S6 is by far the biggest leap I've ever seen in a phone, and I've had every major LG/HTC/Samsung phone from the past 3 years lol.
It truly is a home run.

Keep m9 for a bit longer to see if anything changes in terms of camera and battery performance. I think a person should keep a phone for a least two weeks to get a good impression. Also go on HTC thread to see camera tricks. I'm getting m9 tomorrow and I will see if it will meet my great expectations as I'm coming from a phone that's three years old.
I would only buy s6 if camera was the main thing but for me it isn't and the negatives of the s6 outweigh my liking for the device. The soc difference isn't big in reality and I think they both have inconsistent battery reviews from people, so they are similarly disappointing. Design and ui are a personal opinion but I think m9 is better.
Go with whatever you like tbh and I hope whichever phone you choose you have a great experience

Only Gripe? Having a camera THAT bad is a HUGE fail on HTC's part, when the biggest weakness they've had since the M7 fiasco was their camera
All they had to do to save their company was fix their camera and put a 2K screen in their new flagship.
Instead, they did neither. I predict either a buyout from Samsung to grab patents or HTC simply going out of business in a year.

Screen is a moot point no real difference with 1080p its just a numbers game tbh. iPhone 6 has a lower resolution screen and funnily enough it also looks fine.

Thank god they didn't put a 2k display and the camera isn't an epic fail. They haven't pushed the sensor to what it is capable of. Also manual control says a different story. I doubt they are going bust this year and I think they would rather die then sell themselves to Samsung. I do hope they do get bought by another respectable company so they can be in a better position. They just need more money in R&D and marketing.

It depends, if you can buy the phone for a low price yes. Have a look at the Nexus 4, it´s > 2 years old and still got the latest updates from Google.
If you can wait a few months longer, you might want to wait for the latest Nexus device from Google ?
Other than that, the Nexus 5 is still a great device. Maybe I´m going to use mine for another year.

In terms of performance , the nexus 5 is still one of the fastest/smoothest android devices , But since it is a nexus it has some downsides like the battery and the cameras (both) .
If you can get a great deal on it don't hesitate to take it , otherwise don't buy it .
I advice you to wait few months for the new nexus . Because now is not a good time to buy a pure android device , Few months from now there will be a new nexus and a new moto x and oneplus two .

Battery is terrible, camera is subpar, non-removable battery (can be changed with small tools) , no sd slot , everything else is good. Koodo sells the lg g3 that has 3000mah battery, removable battery, sd card for $400 cad outright.

Unless you like phablets, yes, it is worth buying. There may never be another stock device in a decent size again. This phone performs better than a nexus 6 too as far as I can tell. (Owned a nexus 6 for a couple months and wasn't impressed)

Lg g3 is far behind the nexus 5 in performance and user experience . My brother owns a G3 and he is not happy with it , every thing is good in the G3 except that It is terribly slow and laggy even with custom ROMs and kernels .
I don't know what was lg thinking when designing their UI , But they succeeded to make Android ugly , fat and slow !

That does look really nice. Perfect specs really. With that resolution it will perform better than any phone released yet. If I wasn't on Sprint I probably would check it out if the next nexus turned out to be too big. Sony doesn't seem to have a relationship with Sprint though and I cannot switch carriers due to signal issues at my work (I work in a hospital basement and Sprint has a contract with us for a system that gets signal to the basement. Any other carrier is no signal).

Lg g3 is far behind the nexus 5 in performance and user experience . My brother owns a G3 and he is not happy with it , every thing is good in the G3 except that It is terribly slow and laggy even with custom ROMs and kernels .
I don't know what was lg thinking when designing their UI , But they succeeded to make Android ugly , fat and slow !

I went from the N5 to the G2 (on 4.4.2) and I'd say the experience is good but runs at 70% speed of the N5. On the other hand, I get double the battery of my previous N5's so I couldnt be happier. :victory:
To answer the question, Yes buy the N5 if the price is right, i.e. below $200 in good condition. If battery life is more important consider the G2 if you can get it below $200.

One of the new nexuses. Probably the LG smaller one, but depends on the rest of the specs. If the LG one is a big spec down from the huawei them a shot despite the size ill cross my fingers that its better fitting in my hands than the nexus 6. If the new moto X had a fingerprint reader and wi charging i would strongly be considering that, but wihout those 2 im not interested. Of course one plus no nfc is no go for me too despite other things.

I'm the kind of guy that likes to squeeze every last bit of life out of a device. My last phone was a 2nd gen. Samsung Galaxy which I used for 3 years. I upgraded at the time because I changed to a new provider which uses freqs not supported by the Samsung.
My next phone will probably be whatever latest Nexus device is available at that time.

I actually need to be able to copy files off the phone easily. Preferably with a cable, but a card.
The USB situation on the nexus 5 has made me start to look for a greener pasture, I'm looking at Moto and OnePlusTwo.
Any others people recommend?

I bought this Nexus 5 in late 2013. It'll be interesting to see what this year's Nexus lineup brings as I may be tempted to upgrade.
To be fair though, I need a battery replacement and I'll be good with this phone for another 1 or 2 years...

I agree with dkconor,
Today, I replaced the battery with a "fourheart bl-t9" battery, hopefully this $16 replacement will push the n5 into and through 2016.

I'll be grabbing the Huawei Nexus 6 and switching to Project Fi. Super excited!

What's the difference between 4 heart and lg battery?

I was under the impression that the four heart battery would have a more recent manufacturing date, but I was wrong, it was manufactured in 2013.
I've only had the battery for a day, so far it seems like it'll last a day with moderate usage, and it seems like it runs cooler than the original.

I'll be getting one of the two new Nexus' I'm sure shortly after they come out. However, if Google releases M for T-Mob to include wifi calling (like the Nexus 6), I'll probably hang on to my current N5 until next fall. So far it's only available for the N6.

I don't see any reason to change mine for at least another year, if I don't consider android M the catastrophe lollipop is then I'll get the new nexus 5, if not I'll just get an iphone. I'm still on kitkat and that wasn't the idea behind buying a nexus.

What about lollipop do you not like? I'm actually quite fond of it, so I'm just curious.
Anyway back on topic, I got the N5 in late 2013. Phone has been awesome since day 1. All the ROMs and dev support is honestly unmatched. My next phone will be whatever the latest nexus device is at the time I feel the need to upgrade.

Mainly I can get 2 hours more of battery with kitkat (being more noticeable after changing the battery), has this annoying scroll bug that I every time I scroll up, the flashlight crashes all constantly, I don't like the lockscreen, the dropdown works with the phone locked and the phone also feels slower, but I guess that one is on the animation speed so I can ignore.
