so, out of sheer curiosity I was playing with some of the on phone options and saw a little deal that said "encrypt storage"..... well long story short I was not aware that you could not UNdo this without factory reset of the phone, so I have been using the phone this way for awhile.. nothing really a big deal, just annoyed having to enter a code every time i reboot the phone, or leave the screen off for >5 min, and have to re enter the code when i turn the screen on.... now ofc when I attempt a factory reset on the phone it self... it doesn't do anything the phone reboots and its the exact same lol, I'm thinking that may be from me having a custom ROM on it.. so I will attempt to wipe data via fastboot/adb CMD... and hope it works...
now that the explanation is out of the way, I am curious.. will erasing the phone data either by on the phone or thought the CMD, will it unroot and re lock my phone? or is that set and not bothered by data erasing?

If you are properly rooted it should not touch anything other than data.

When I turn on my device (TP) it ALWAYS asks me to align the screen and to config the calender and time, and also it asks me if I want to put a lock on it. (However the startup video does NOT show)
This is really annoying! Because I hade soft resetting or turning of the device, because I know I need to do that align and configs again!
I've hard reseted my device once, and before I hard resetted my phone, it wasn't like this! Is there a way to turn this of?
Just out of intrest, do you loose any data when you startup. Examples are other Windows settings, contacts, messages, history etc?
sorry, double post
Just to be clear, are you properly aligning the screen? I had to talk a geeky mate of mine through the process. He was briefly tapping the screen and the cursor wasn't moving around the screen as it should. I had to explain that you have to keep the stylus pressed gently on the screen over the little cross until it moves to the next position. Repeat at each position.
Sorry if I'm teaching you to suck eggs.
Uhmm, No I don't loose any data (settings or anything)
Also, yes I align the screen correctly I guess. I do it just as you tell me
But it's like, when you first got the phone, You first installed the WM (I don't) Then you align the screen (This I have to do) Then it asks you to tell it what time it is (This I also got to do every time i turn off and on my device) Then it asks if you want to have a code lock, you can skip or press next to make a lock (This I also have to do, And YES, I have tried to make a password and then just delete it afterwards) Then it tells you to type in PIN code (I also got to do this, but this is nothing I want removed hehe) Then lastly it auto configurated what network you use (For you guys ATT and sprint maybe, I got NetCom - Also this I do NOT have to do)
Please help me! hehe
Really annoying that I need to config this setting each time I restart my Cellphone
Has i always been this way? Have you not had the phone long?
It sounds like you didn't hard reset your phone after you either turned it on for the first time, or flashed a custom ROM.
I bet a hard reset will work, if not then it sounds like a hardware problem. Like back in the old days before WM5 if your battery died, thats it it would wipe. This is because the memory in the phone is volitile. Your phone might not be keeping the settings or supplying enough power.
Try a hard reset first, this usually solves most problems like this

As said, I got this phone for christmas, I turned it on, and had to set it up, I did, and when I restarted the phone I did NOT have to set it ut again!
After 1 month I hard reseted it (Because of a bad program which ruined my dailpad) and now I have to set up the phone EACH TIME I turn it on!! (I do not have to install WM or config the Network)
OK, so I've Hard Reset my device again, works perfectly now!
Alright, allow me to summerize to you guys the series of screw ups that happened in the day that I've had my captivate.
Basically, it's like this. I got this phone from my brother (it used to be his). Now when I got it, I began basically erasing his contents and setting up mine. The Phone is on the Cognition OS and everything seemed fine.
Now, when I tried to set up my google account, it said I had to do a factory reset, I did that. Then I realized the market place app was no longer there :/
I did another factory reset, still didn't help, and started looking around for info.
I told my buddy this and he said he could fix it. So he get's the update.zip for rooting the phone, sets it up on the SD card, and goes to root the phone normally. Except when he restarts the phone after, it doesn't go to the set up screen, so he just starts it normally and enters the setup screen by holding home+volume up+power.
Then he presses the reinstall packages, and the phone seems to get to work on the update pack...
Now, every time I turn on the phone the voice says "converting data partition to optimize extension four", turns off, then repeats.
I've looked up this problem and it seems to have something to do with voodoo, but the causes in the other cases the causes were different.
Can someone please help me out here? I've also tried doing a hard reset by holding the volume down button and pressing power, but nothing seems to take me to the recovery mode.
HELP.
Did you pull the battery during this our did you let it run? Should let it run.
Does your phone boot up at all?
At&t or rogers?
Do you have a windows pc with usb drivers installed?
What its your build number, located under battery, something like 1008?
Answer these questions and we can get you back up and running
-Well after he did the reinstall thing we let it run for like 15 minutes, then he pulled the battery out.
-The phone only shows the AT&T screen, say's the "converting data partition..." thing, then goes blank and does it again. I've let it run for like 10-15 minutes before having to turn it off because I couldn't have the speech going off.
-I have a windows PC, and but I'm not sure if I have the drivers installed. I have Kies installed and when I plugged the phone in before Kies could recognize the phone (though it wouldn't fully connect, it would just say "connecting" on the kies screen).
-The Model is SGH-I897, that's the only relevant thing I see under the battery, that good enough?
Thanks a lot.
No, your phone has a build, on phone under battery, the word build is not listed. Something between 1006-1012
If we are going to do this you need to be active, I can not wait 20 minutes in between responses
Sorry the internet kinda crapped out actually.
And I see a 1007 between the bar codes, that it?
Yes
Before we get started try this
Take battery, sim, ext sd our of phone
Plug usb into pc but not phone
Put battery back in
Hold volume up and down, while holding plug in usb
Screen should come on with android with shovel
You can pull the battery again
Confirm this happened
Yep, it happened.
It may be easier if we use gtalk, log in on your pc using google id, send me an invite [email protected]. This way we know when each other respond
Just sent u the inv

Have you gone back to stock and then reflashed? Seems like some files are getting corrupted. Because you have a voodoo kernel I would follow these steps. Make sure to back up.
1. Use Odin to flash a non vodoo kernel.
2. Flash stock rom and master clear
3. Reflash rom of choice if it is 2.2
3a. If you want 2.3 follow the tut on it.
4. Breath a sigh of releive lol
My tablet froze on me and I powered it down to restart it and then it went into what folks on here call a bootloop. After holding down Power and volume down, it brought me to a screen that had three icons and I chose the one on the right by mistake and now it's looping again, but instead of the Asus screen with the refreshing icon, it's the android falling with an Error on his chest after quickly flashing Installing System Update.
The power volume combo works no more and the only way I can shut off my tablet completely is to use the power and volume up button. I can't get back to screen with the three icons no matter how many times I try.
I've already resolved myself to purchasing a new device, so my main concern is recovering the data, slim as that might be. Any recommendations?
Also, note that Ive never rooted or installed anything on my tablet. No roms or kernels or any other modifications. If I can get my data by any means necessary, I'd be satisfied, even If I Ihad to open it and retrieve the harddrive.
Hopefully Ive explained myself sufficently for you guys to help me. Cheers.

If I read your post correctly, you selected the right icon which is a Wipe data from your bootloader. When you executed that Wipe data, it will wipe everything on your internal SD including your /media folder or your personal files and data... The chance is very slim unless someone knows how to recover data from a wipe. Technically, your data is still there but it is only a dumb files which contain only 0's and 1's. Some recovery tools may be able to retrieve your data but I don't have that knowledge.. I hope that someone will be able to help you out and good luck...:fingers-crossed:
I'm afraid LMK is right: Your data is gone.
Do I suspect correctly that you interrupted the Wipe Data process after selecting it "accidentally"?
Choosign Wipe Data from the bootloader causes the BL to write a command to the misc partition to start the recovery and wipe the data partition. If you interrupted the process, there's no telling what and where that got corrupted - unless you just let it loop and pray that it finishes the wipe process which would erase the BL command. Connect it to power and let it loop for a few hours. What have you got to loose?
But your data is gone either way - sorry.
Morning, cheeky question(s)
Where are you located, and would you be interested in selling your bricked TF700? I have a broken screen among other things and would be interested in buying your tablet for spares if you are getting a new one?
PM me if you are interested.
Thank you
Freddie
I'm not all too sure what the Icon on the left wad, but I'm sure it said RKU or some sort. I would have given up all hope if I had hit the wipe data on the right.
Days recovery aside, is there anyway I can get my looped tablet to work? I plugged it into a comp and it didn't recognise it.
Hey,
yesterday i faced a problem i didn't knew of yet. As i mentioned sometimes, i came from an One M7 2 weeks ago as it didn't work the way it should - camera useless and awful battery life. I rooted the M7, had problems with it and so on - just how it is with a rooted phone + custom roms.
However, due to the DRM i didn't root my Z3 yet. Yesterday i took it out my pocket, thought it was a bit warm.. nevermind. It worked. 30 minutes later i pulled it out again, still warm, and screen wouldn't turn on. I reset it (power and vol+ for those who didn't know), tried to boot again.. well, it took several minutes and finally showed me the attached error message. The system performance was really, really low. Everything stuttered, i couldn't even enter my pin. A few forced reboots later i could finally enter my pin and get into my system only to notice that my data partition wasn't doing fine. I had to set language and so on in the initial setup process, apps kept force-closing in seconds. My own apps were still on the device, however when i tried to open WhatsApp there was no data there, i should have gone through the registration process. The phone froze after seconds each time. I tried to enter the fastboot menu (is it called that way?) while booting to just do a factory reset, didn't find the button combination. So finally, after i found home without navigation from no man's land (sure, why doesn't it happen at home anyway..), i managed to boot it, get through settings and initiate a factory reset. Of course, all the apps were deleted then and i could install all apps like LightFlow again. Had to re-enter all the settings i did in those kind of apps, it was kind of annoying.
So, my questions: Why the hell did this happen to my Z3? Not rooted, didn't even think of it. There wasn't a day on the One M7 without flashing anything and it never happened. It wouldn't have been as bad as it was on the Z3, as i HAD root, could have wiped data in TWRP in a matter of seconds and also had backups of my data, which i of course didn't have for my unrooted Z3.
Is it likely to happen again? Can any app do this on a non-rooted phone? I read a bit about the error, that it would be caused by some apps, but not in the extent as it happened on my phone. Most of the times it would just be an annoying error message.
I got a thing in always getting a defective unit, so i hope it isn't happening again on the Z3
Maybe the internal flash is corrupted/failing. I had a similar issue with my HTC One X I went to nap one day and half hour later it shut down, it restarted but boot looped. Eventually it showed no data partition as being mounted and completely died. They replaced the motherboard.
Better contact Sony, maybe you need a replacement.
Mh, actually that's the least thing i want to do.. I'd have to wait for at least 2 weeks to get it back and chances are that they won't do a thing or damage it (bad experiences with my former Razr i). It works just fine after the factory reset, no errors yet. If it should happen again, i'd of course send it in for repair but i think, until then i will use it normally, with more caution and backups of course.
Probably the cleanest solution HERE
I have what seems to be at least a partial BSOD on my s6. I can boot to both Odin and Recovery mode, I have wiped the cache, but no matter what I cannot get an unlock screen. I can however get my peel remote lockscreen app, which funny enough did not work previously when the phone was locked, but does now the screen lights when I call it, I can double tap home and get the camera, but thats it. I don't have debugging on so I can't adb and the phone isn't rooted.
Other than doing a factory reset (I really dont want that) I am at a loss. Any ideas?
Sean
Gave up and factory reset. Only guess is userland got destroyed somehow - maybe i clicked install overnight instead of later and the baterry died or something.
Oh well
